1 A Welcoming and Affirming Church A Safe Space for All First gathered in 1812 ORDER OF WORSHIP October 14, :00 am The Sixth Sunday of Celebrationtide Thoughts on Worship As we continue to explore our theme of Brave Conversations, Bold Congregation, we do so with an eye toward what it means to be a Christian today. Often times it begins with listening. Are we set in our ways like the rich young ruler, or are we open to changing our minds, even if it requires drastic action? Do we have the courage to be curious and the strength to change? We also celebrate our 50-year members this week. Our church is strengthened by your faithfulness to the work of God in and through this congregation. Prelude * Indicates that you are invited to stand in body or in spirit. Hearing devices are available from the ushers for those needing assistance. * Prayer of Illumination O Lord our Sovereign, How majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens, And written it on our hearts, That even from the mouths of babes and children, We can hear your Wisdom. Unlock the doors our hearts keep sealed, And open our minds that we might hear, See, Know, That you are real, That you are good, That you are near. * Processional Hymn 541 Church of God, Elect and Glorious...Nettleton

2 * The Lord s Prayer (debts) * Gloria Patri 734 Glory Be to the Father...Greatorex Welcome From the Church The Reverend Brent Newberry In the pew rack should be an FBC Connection Card. If you are visiting with us, and if you would like to learn more about our church or ways you can connect more deeply within the life of our church, please fill out the card and place it in the offering plate later on in the service. * Greeting One Another in the Peace of Christ You are invited to share the grace of Christ with one another. * Gathering Hymn 398 O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus...Ebenezer The First Reading Hebrews 4:12-16 Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. One: May the Spirit of Wisdom lead us to understanding. Many: Thanks be to God. Choral Orison George Wallace Briggs The Second Reading Mark 10:17-31 As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother. He said to him, Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth. Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. They were greatly astounded and said to one another, Then who can be saved? Jesus looked at them and said, For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.

3 Peter began to say to him, Look, we have left everything and followed you. Jesus said, Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields with persecutions and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first. One: May the Spirit of Wisdom lead us to understanding. Many: Thanks be to God. Offering of Our Gifts The ministries of our church are possible because of the generous gifts you pledge in support. At this time, you are invited to give your offering, as you are able. Offertory To My Old Brown Earth, Pete Seeger, ( ) Arr. by Paul Halley * Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God all creatures here below. Praise God above ye heavenly host; Creator, Christ and Holy Ghost. Amen. * Prayer of Dedication Moment of Wonder Choral Anthem Earth Song, Frank Ticheli (1958- ) Children are invited to go upstairs with their teachers to Sunday School. Sermon The Reverend Brent Newberry Prayers of the People Choral Amen Greek Liturgy, Russian Church Recognizing Our 50 Year Members * Susan Beauregard Partnering in Church Life Just as we arrived this morning in faith, so too, we depart to be faithful partners in the work of God. Listen now for opportunities to connect more richly in the life of First Baptist. * Congregational Hymn 521 Abide With Me...Eventide

I m grateful to our latest batch of leaders who have committed their time, energy, and creativity to cultivating spaces of mutual learning and friendship. I hope you engage these opportunities. I know how busy all of you are but I think slowing down will help each of you enjoy the beauty and wonder of the world around us. Check out the announcements for more details. As we continue to foster and deeper our sense of community and kinship within our congregation, I want to extend one more invitation to each one of you. On Sunday, October 28th, we are asking all First Baptist members and attendees to be present in worship that morning so you can be a part of our family picture. We ve tried this a couple of times on Easter Sunday, but we want this picture to be used for our new directory. So, following worship on Oct 28th and just before we begin our Fall business meeting, we will gather together for this important picture. Now, I keep explaining that we have 350 active participants in our church life. Don t let me caught with egg on my face! Besides, with a full house, I ll lose the bet and have to shave my beard In all seriousness, we really want you here and present, however wide or close your worship attendance orbit is these days. We love you, and we want to be together as a family. Brent
