Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matt 5: 44 45, 48) A couple of weeks ago, while at Mass, a section of St. Matthew s gospel struck a chord with me. The lesson that was being taught that evening was that if we are truly a Christian people, we must love our neighbour. We are called to love our friends as well as our enemies. When the occasion calls us to support and care for a friend, it usually comes with little emotional discomfort since we know and value the person. However, if a stranger or someone who has caused us grief and heartache needs our tender loving care, it becomes a book of a different cover, so to speak. We are taught otherwise in so many ways by Jesus himself. He welcomed the oppressed, the poor and the sinners as if he was their friend. It is often said that charity (and peace) begins at home; as it is here that charity 11 P/T Interviews (9 am 12 noon) should and can be learned and practiced. William Faber wrote a poem about the importance of extending kindness to another person in need: It was but a sunny smile, and little it cost in the giving, But it scattered the night like the morning light and made the day worth living. It was but a kindly word, a word that was lightly spoken, Yet not in vain for it chilled the pain of a heart that was nearly bro ken. It was but a helping hand and it seemed of little availing, But its clasp was warm; it saved from harm a brother whose strength was failing. 3 To All those working with Youth: Last year several of the youth ministers of our Diocese asked if we could hold a Youth Rally. After numerous meetings, and initial planning sessions, the Youth Rally has been set for May 07, 2011 to be held at Holy Trinity Academy in Okotoks, AB. If there is one thing that many of us hear, it is how to engage our youth to see the importance of the church, and how to draw them in. This is one of those tools that with your help we can certainly reach many more of our youth. I would ask if you could kindly pass this information on to your parishes & or students in grades 7-12 so they have the opportunity to take part in this great day. From what I have heard about past Youth Rally s they can gather up to 1000 participants, and the young are truly built up in their faith from the experience. The young people come from all over the Diocese, and sometimes other Dioceses participate. Please help to pass the word to the youth of your School Boards & Diocese. We are in need of many volunteers to make this a great event as well. 4 RELEASE, INDEMNITY AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK For Participation in the Diocese of Calgary Youth Rally at Holy Trinity Academy Okotoks, AB Saturday May 7, 2011 READ THIS CAREFULLY; IT AFFECTS YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS By signing this document you, your family and representatives give up the right to sue In consideration of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary permitting me to participate in the Diocese of Calgary Youth Rally on Christ the Redeemer School Board premises, and on behalf of myself, my heirs, executors, successors, administrators, assigns and whomever else may have an interest either at common law or by operation of statute (collectively the Releaser ), I agree as follows: 1. I hereby waive any and all claims I may have now and in the future, release from all liability and agree not to sue, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary and its officers, directors, employees, representatives (collectively the Releasee ) for any and all personal injury, sickness, death, property damage or loss sustained by me as a result of my participation in the Diocese of Calgary Youth Rally, from any cause whatever, including but not limited to, negligence on the part of the Releasee. For the purposes of this Agreement, the Diocese of Calgary Youth Rally shall include all activities from the time of my arrival at Holy Trinity Academy premises to my final departure there from. 6 Band News Congratulations to Colin Martins of Tilley, Alberta who won our Side of Beef Raffle through the Band Booster Club. The funds from this raffle go to support our students in their activities this year, as well as helping to purchase new instruments for our band program. Thank you to everyone who purchased a ticket. A special thank you goes to Vauxhall Meats who provided the processing. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. The Grade 6 Band will be embarking on their annual University of Lethbridge workshop on Friday, March 25th. Students are reminded that they need to be at the school by 7:45 as we need to leave by Students need to bring their instruments and music. Lunch will be provided. We will be arriving back at the school at around 3:30 so please make arrangements to travel home if you take the bus. Students are reminded to get their permission slips and fees, if any, back to the school by Friday, March 18th. Festival Time is almost upon us again. The St. Mary's Grade 6 Band will be participating in the Lethbridge Kiwanis Festival on April 11th. The band performs at 11:30 am at the Yates Auditorium. If you can attend one or more of these performances, please come and help support our musicians. Please help our young musicians to prepare by encouraging them to practice as much as possible. Please ensure that your son/daughter has appropriate concert attire for these performances. Black pants or skirt, with a white dress shirt is appropriate for grades 6-8. We will be taking school buses for these trips, but due to bus regulations, we can not transport our larger instruments on the bus. We will be looking for a parent for each group to drive either a school van of equipment, or their own large vehicle. Permission and driver forms will be sent out shortly and must be returned by April 6 Congratulations go out Rowan Unser who travelled to Calgary in February to participate in the Alberta Band Association s Southern Alberta Junior Honor Band. Rowan performed with some of the best junior high students in southern Alberta. She had a great time and represented our school very well. The St. Mary s annual band trip will involve this year s grade 7-12 band students. The musicians will be leaving Taber on Wednesday, April 13th and returning on Sunday, April 17th. The students will be travelling to Vancouver Island to perform at the band festival in Port Alberni. Final permission forms and payment are due back to the school no later than Tuesday, March 29th Looking for something to help keep your son/ daughter motivated with their practicing? The school has purchased several play-a-long CD s. These CD s provide a professional accompaniment while your son/daughter plays their part. There are a variety of styles and ability levels to choose from. The books and CD s are available to be signed out through the library. Please check them out. 9 New Horizons for Seniors Intergenerational Computer Program This project is funded by Government of Canada s New Horizons for Seniors Program. PROGRAM DETAILS WHO Youth, ages WHAT Teaching seniors how to better use their computers (word processing, , internet, Skype) WHEN The program will start in March 2011and run for 10 weeks. You will visit your senior once a week for 2 hours. WHERE In seniors homes or a public meeting place (Public Library) Youth.are you looking for an exciting volunteer opportunity? Are you patient, computer savvy and would like to share your knowledge about computers, the internet, and Skype? Join us for this exciting volunteer opportunity and be matched with a senior to teach them all about computers.. At the end of the program, there will be a wrap up party and honorarium given to all who complete the program. To get involved in this program, you will need to submit a resume. 10 Mr. Doolittle s Amazing Monthly Math Challenge This month s prize: Springtime Surprise Basket Mr. Doolittle has created a mathematics contest. Each month there will be a new math challenge problem. If you can solve the problem and follow these steps, you could win the monthly prize. Here is the math challenge problem for March, 2011: Mr. Doolittle has two containers, one holding 4 liters of red paint and the other an equal quantity of green paint. Mr. Doolittle wants to paint the doghouse for Diego so that it will not deteriorate in the rain. Mrs. Doolittle does not like either the red color or the green color, so Mr. Doolittle mixes the two colors as stated below: 1. One liter of green paint is poured into the red. 2. Two liters of this mixture is poured back into the green. 3. Half the mixture in the green paint container is poured into the red container. (The paints are mixed thoroughly between each operation.) Mrs. Doolittle then changes her mind and decides that she wants to use either the red or the green. If the two containers are then levelled off, without pouring any paint away, so that there is the same quantity in each container, which is the more pure, the 'green' paint or the 'red' paint? This contest is open to all St. Mary s School Students/Parents/Guardians/etc.. When you have determined the solution to the problem, write down your solution, along with a complete explanation of your answer that includes all work and steps required to demonstrate a complete solution. Mark your submission with the words MONTHLY MATH CONTEST March Be sure to include your name, grade, and room designation. Place your completed submission under the door of the school shop (room 13). Joint submissions are allowed, but there will only be one prize awarded. Thus, members of a winning group will have to share the winning prize. **NOTE Because there are only 2 possible answers, the winner will be the submission that best illustrates the degree of purity for each final container of paint.
