1 Pastor s Points of Light: Confidence in what we Hope for and Assurance about what we do not see. Have you ever been asked about your faith? How do you answer such a question? Do you confess an Orthodox Christian response, do you get into explanations of your spiritual journey or do you rationalize your ideas about religion based on feelings of nostalgia or on the basis of heritage (Armenians are Christians)? Let s look at how faith is described and what the word itself means. According to the dictionary, faith is understood as either complete trust or confidence in someone or something or a strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof. Nowhere in the word does it depend on who or what your understanding of God is. Any talk of spirituality, nostalgia, our parents practices or heritage have anything to do with Jesus Christ. Any exchange or alternative to true faith, hope in Christ alone is false religion and is an exchange of truth for lies. (Romans 1:25) True faith must necessarily begin and end with the person and work of Jesus Christ. The biblical explanation of faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. (Hebrews 11:1) How could anyone put faith in something that they were not completely committed or dependent on? How could you hope in something that wasn t completely sure? If a person did place any trust in that which was not worthy they would be a fool and their faith would be in vain. Anyone who was reasonable would understand this and would not place their trust on something that was unreliable. Even the faith as small as a mustard seed, if it is placed in Christ, is world without end, greater and more immeasurably grand than a faith placed in that which has no quality, undeserving of the trust we place in it (false religions, new age philosophies, any other spirituality from which Christ is absent) (Continued on page 5, Pastor) The PC would like to start printing the Paros in color and better quality. The PC is looking for a donor/donors to handle the costs associated. The total upfront cost is roughly $9000 and the remaining service contract is another $8500. 2 The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin Catholicos of All Armenians Confirms Election of Father Daniel Findikyan as New Primate hoon Tuesday, May 8, 2018, His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, confirmed the election of the Very Reverend Fr. Daniel Findikyan as the new Primate of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America. Father Findikyan was elected as Primate on May 4, by the delegates to the 116th Diocesan Assembly. The gathering of representative from all the local parishes of the Eastern Diocese met May 3-5 in Westchester County, NY. He succeeds Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, who had announced he would conclude his term as Primate after holding the office for 28 years, seven terms of office, making him the longest-serving Primate of the Eastern Diocese. The letter from Catholicos Karekin II, dated May 8 and addressing Father Findikyan for the first time as Primate, read in part: With this letter we approve your election as Primate, and with prayers to God we ask that the Lord will support your zealous service, so that the lofty responsibility entrusted to you may be productive, strengthening the national and spiritual life of the Eastern Diocese, and bringing brightness upon our Apostolic Holy Church. His Holiness official confirmation of the election result paved the way for authority to be formally transferred from Archbishop Barsamian to Father Findikyan. This was accomplished via a short enthronement ceremony in Saint Vartan Cathedral on the afternoon of May 8. About a dozen clergymen, including two of episcopal rank, took part in the service, which went forward before a group of Diocesan staff members and guests from the surrounding locale. In the course of a procession of priests and deacons before the cathedral altar, Archbishop Barsamian transferred the Primate s sign of office a ceremonial walking stick known as the asa into the hand of Father Findikyan. The new Primate thereupon took his place on the Primate s throne, as the clergy approached him to kiss his hand and receive his blessing. Officially representing Catholicos Karekin II at the ceremony was Archbishop Nathan Hovhannisian, visiting the Eastern Diocese from Holy Etchmiadzin. He read aloud the letter of the Catholicos of All Armenians, and offered some gracious words of congratulations to the Diocese, its new Primate, and Archbishop Barsamian. As outgoing Primate, Archbishop Barsamian spoke gratefully about his years of service, and expressed warm optimism for the ministry of his successor. With his intelligence, his spirituality, and his skill at communication, Father Daniel will speak to and help broaden our appeal to the younger generation, and draw all our people more deeply into the life of the church,. He revealed that the silver-headed walking stick, or asa, had originally belonged to the late Catholicos Karekin Hovsepian, who prior to becoming Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia served as Diocesan Primate, from Archbishop Barsamian addressed the new Primate as a worthy recipient of the late Catholicos Karekin Hovsepian s staff. In his remarks, Father Daniel Findikyan addressed the gathering in Armenian, recalling the honored names of the previous primates of the Diocese. He thanked Archbishop Barsamian and Archbishop Hovhannisian, and expressed brotherly affection for all the clergy. He continued: It s an almost unimaginable honor for me to stand before you as Primate of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America. He said that he has taken up the role with some trepidation, but mostly with hope and joy, adding that it was deeply humbling to receive the staff previously held by some of the greatest Armenian churchmen of the 20th and 21st centuries. Addressing the broad body of clergy and faithful throughout the Diocese, he said: I take great strength from the thought that by your faith and strength, the Lord will guide us all. With the blessing of the Catholicos of All Armenians, the Very Rev. Father Daniel Findkyan now goes forward as the 12th Primate of the Diocese. What follows is the text of His Holiness Karekin II s letter of confirmation, in English translation. April/May/June Paros Saints Sahag and Mesrob

3 A Message From The Primate Dear Faithful: My blessings and warm good wishes to you all. I am writing to you about some troubling news from Armenia in the last few days, regarding a small, vocal group of protestors clergy and lay people agitating for the resignation of the Catholicos of All Armenians. In our homeland we have witnessed in the past month a remarkable expression of genuinely popular will, with many thousands of Armenia s citizens calling for a more open and just society. The same noble ideals also apply to our holy Church. Yet the Church is far more than a political institution. It is the Body of Christ, an eternal, mysterious and sacred communion of frail human beings with almighty God. Every Sunday during the holy Badarak we pray that God protect Christ s holy Church, keeping her stable and strong by the power of the Holy Spirit. We commend faithful people who seek to strengthen our church in such a prayerful spirit of prudence, Christian zeal, dignity and love. We decry personal attacks and pompous demonstrations. With this letter I join my brother Diocesan primates and clergy around the globe in asking our faithful to uphold those same standards of character in this present moment. Catholicos Karekin II is the duly chosen pontiff of the Armenian Church, the spiritual father of the Armenian people, sustained by our prayers in every Badarak. He is supported by our clergy, honored by our people around the world, respected by the leaders of our sister churches. These are not matters to be treated lightly, or with disrespect. On behalf of the clergy and faithful of the Eastern Diocese, I reaffirm our solidarity with the Brotherhood of Holy Etchmiadzin and the Catholicos of Armenians, His Holiness Karekin II. During this delicate time in the life of our people, let us pray for our Lord s guidance and mercy. With prayers, The Very Reverend Father Daniel Findikyan, Primate May 8, 2018 Very Reverend Father Daniel Findikyan, Primate Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America, New York, U.S.A. Dear Hayr Sourp: From the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin we convey our pontifical blessings and congratulations to you on the occasion of your election as Primate of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America, on May 4, during the Diocesan Assembly of the Eastern Diocese. With this letter we approve your election as Primate, and with prayers to God we ask that the Lord will support your zealous service, so that the lofty responsibility entrusted to you may be productive, strengthening the national and spiritual life of the Eastern Diocese, and bringing brightness upon our Apostolic Holy Church. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15) With blessings, Karekin II, Catholicos of all Armenians Archbishop He Will Not Seek Another Term April 27, 2018 His Eminence Archbishop Khajag Barsamian announced this week that he would not seek an 8th term as Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern). His decision to withdraw from the election brings to a close a tenure as Primate that lasted 28 years and 7 terms of office. Archbishop Barsamian has served as the 11th Primate of the Diocese, and the 2nd to occupy New York s Saint Vartan Cathedral as the seat of his episcopal office. He is the longest serving primate, having occupied the position for a greater period than predecessors like Archbishop Torkom Manoogian (24 years) and Archbishop Tiran Nersoyan (10 years). His period of office coincided with such milestones as the centennial of the Armenian Diocese in America (1998), the 1,700th anniversary of Armenia s Christian conversion, the post-9/11 memorial, and the 100th year of remembrance of the Armenian Genocide (2015). What follows is the text of Archbishop Barsamian s letter to Diocesan delegates and PC chairs, April 26, Dear Diocesan Delegates, Brothers and Sisters in Christ: I have some quite unexpected news about which I would like to inform you. I have decided that I will not be running for the office of Diocesan Primate during the upcoming election at the Diocesan Assembly. As the election has neared, I have found myself feeling increasingly anxious, even though I recognize that there is support for my candidacy. But the thought that keeps returning to my mind and heart is that the time has come for me to make space for someone else to lead this great Diocese. This feeling has been with me for a while; but until recently I also felt an obligation to run, to help create a smooth transition to new leadership. However, I have been privileged to serve as Primate of this Diocese now for 28 years. During this time I have tried to fulfill my responsibilities with love and joy, with the support and partnership of our dedicated clergy, lay leaders, and the Diocesan staff in the Eastern Diocese. I have meditated, thought, and prayed deeply on this matter. But in my heart I feel it is time for me to move on. I have consulted with Vehapar, and he has given me his blessing, for which I am grateful. I have informed the Diocesan Council members of my decision, as well as the clergy of our Diocese. And now I want to inform you, the leaders of our church in America. I regret the sudden nature and timing of this news. And I want to say that it has been a pleasure working with each one of you, for the good of the Armenian Church and our Diocese. Shortly, the chairman of the Diocesan Council will communicate with you, to inform you of the next steps. Today, in this moment of transition, I find sustenance in the words of Scripture: To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1). I continue praying for each of you, and ask that you remember me in your prayers. Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate April/May/June Paros Saints Sahag and Mesrob

4 Parish Council Corner Krisdos Hayrav Ee Medelotz. Orhnyal eh harootiunun Krisdosee. Christ is risen from the dead. Blessed is the resurrection of Christ. First, I would like to thank Joyce Avedisian for her leadership of our Parish Council the last number of years; especially in a very difficult time when our Pastor had some challenges. Her hard work, dedication and love for this Church was truly an example for us to witness. She juggled challenge after challenge and made sure our Parish, with the help of our Diocese, was covered with our spiritual needs each and every Sunday. I also congratulate Gary Taraian on 6 more years on the Parish Council; Gary, another former Chairperson, shows much love and humility to this Church and for that we are very appreciative. I also want to congratulate the incoming Parish Council members that have been elected for the next 2 years and welcome two new members Ernie Shaghalian and Margaret Chevian. Also, we welcome back Dr. Martin Papazian. For a few weeks now, I have tried to think of a subject to write about after being elected as our Parish Council Chairperson. What could I possibly say that would mean any difference to so many of you that have taught me so much from attending this beautiful Church since I was just a child? I have been a humble servant of this Church for many years and in these few short months I have realized more and more that no matter what you put in to this Church; what you receive back is tenfold. Our Church gives back to us in so many ways. The talents each one of us possesses will move our Church forward; but, our Church needs each and every one of you. As many of you know, I travel quite extensively in business and it has taken me to small little towns that I had never heard of. Places in small town America that I quiz my parents on and a lot of times I get, Where is that? So, on a busy Wednesday afternoon a few weeks ago I was thinking about this very subject what to write! What could I say that might hit home? So, at a stop light, I saw a very old neighborhood Church, gorgeous old brick with its large dark Talent Show Photos wooden doors wide open. I did a double-take. It is a Wednesday.it s 3pm.why is the Church door open? Not a car on the lot, no cars out front, nothing. All I could think about is if we did that, we would be crazy!! But, how crazy is it? Are our doors TRULY open? Is our Church open in each and every one of your hearts? Was it a message from God saying my home is open; my building may be very old, but, I remain open for you to build your faith, lift her up to make her stronger, be with her to showcase those talents God has given you to share with others you get the idea. I am sure you could come up with more analogies. But, what is says to me is our Church is here for each of you every day. No matter how much our foundation might be cracked, or our roof might be leaking or our relationships among ourselves might be fractured, she always needs us and whether we want to acknowledge it; we need her every day. Our Church needs its doors open; we need to open our arms wide to welcome everyone. It makes no difference if you are from Armenia, Cranston, Baku, Palou or North Providence we need to love one another, build our faith with one another and share our talents with one another so that she can flourish. There is no single way to complete a task, the only way is to do it is with love for the church and for the people within the walls of this Church. My doors are open, my arms are outstretched and my ears are attentively listening to make us better. There are so many examples in our Parish of people who give their talents to our 104 year old community; I am asking you to join us to make her grow. We need our pews overflowing with children, young adults, teens, grandparents and most important YOU. I ask you to join us in worship, join us in witness, join us in service, join us in fellowship and educate yourself more and more each and every day about our Church, our community, our history and most important, build your faith with us. We need you, our children need you and I need you. I look forward to working with all of you to continue moving our Church forward. Please call me at any time ( ) to talk about whatever it is that you want to talk about to make HER grow. If you are willing to volunteer; we will gladly put you to work! Respectively submitted, Steve Megrdichian April/May/June Paros Saints Sahag and Mesrob

5 (Continued from Page 1, Pastor s Points of Light) In the letter to the Corinthians, Saint Paul says as much when he speaks to the church about resurrection saying, But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, the Christ has not been raised either.and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. 19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. (1 Corinthians 15:12-19) Look at how he says that if the thing in which you put your trust were not assured or a reality even beyond your understanding then, you are a fool and your faith is futile He goes on to state that we would be the most pitiable of all people, placing our trust in something unworthy of it. I ll never forget a time when I was a young man and my neighborhood friends and I wanted to play some hockey on the pond. It was late winter and a pretty warm day. I saw cracks in the ice and felt that the ice had grown thin with a few days of warmer weather. As much as I would have loved lacing on my skates and playing pond hockey for the day, I thought better of it and decided to go home. The next day, I learned that two of my buddies fell through the ice. Thankfully they were fine and didn t suffer any ill effects that a few warm blankets, Lipton s Chicken Noodle Soup and Hot chocolate couldn t take care of. I learned that day that in spite of placing great faith in something, if it is unworthy of that faith, you would be disappointed and in the end a fool for depending on it. Faith is one of the chief gifts of the Holy Spirit of God. Along with Hope and Love, the three comprise the fullness of the baptismal gifts and charisms. (1 Corinthians 13:13) Our Christian faith is firmly founded upon the rock of salvation, our Lord Jesus Christ. The parable of the wise and foolish builder illustrates this lesson well where it says the foolish builder built his house on sand but the wise builder built his house on an immovable and sturdy rock. Our faith must be the same. Only faith in Christ in the solid foundation of faith and nothing else is nearly as firm nor can we place any eternal trust or dependency on it. A sad reality, that most of us have to learn the hard way, is that a reorientation to true faith, the faith that is trustworthy, never fails nor disappoints and is always dependable comes with crisis. The person devoid of the true life-giving faith sees in times of crisis only doom but for the faithful person it is quite miraculously just the opposite! Imagine who the greatest presidents were. The ones who overcame the greatest crisis and confronted them boldly are as such remembered. Bill Clinton once said in a post presidential lament that he could never be remembered as a great president because he never had to deal with an international crisis over which he was called to preside and overcome. It is in times of crisis when we are driven into the embrace of the arms of a loving Savior and seek his mercy and salvation. Our cries of Lord have mercy resonate and resound with a cry for help, knowing that we are not in control and are helpless over illness, death and failure. Saint Isaac the Syrian teaches us that Illness is a visitation from God. Saint John the Golden-mouthed says that like the paralytic who waited 38 years to be healed, affliction reveals the charity of God. (John 5:1-15) The man of false faith says God where were you when I needed you? or why did you let this happen to me? The man of faith says Lord, grant me the patience, like your holy saints in heaven whose sufferings far outweigh my own, but grant me the virtue of patience to endure my suffering (either emotional or physical), although my outer man (physical body) withers and wastes, that through it my inner man (spirit) might be renewed day by day. (2 Corinthians 4:16) Christ is the rock, he is the thick ice on which we skate, he is the one who props us up. No one or nothing else can have anything close to the love, power and might of God who became a true man so that each of us might become like unto God (Saint Athanasius- On the Incarnation). Through his sharing in our human suffering and death, his weakness makes us strong and his poverty makes us rich (2 Corinthians 8:9). This is not speaking of strength and wealth as the world gives where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal (Matthew 6:19), but the strength of God s love and victory overcoming the world and the treasures stored up for us in heaven. (Matthew 6:20) Rejoice in the crises that are inevitable. There is something far worse than not having a crisis to engage. It is having a crisis but not engaging it. The Christian engages it with faith, not a random hopeless faith in that which withers, but the true faith in the one and only God who alone can redeem and exalt us. When you feel the most desperate, sick, helpless, alone or downtrodden, it is then and there where the majesty and power of Christ s divine balm of healing avails the person of faith, the one who places her complete trust in Christ without wavering and without doubt. All things must begin and end with Jesus Christ, sealed by the Cross in baptism and sealed by the Cross in the grave, we belong to Jesus from whom, echoing the words of the Apostle Paul, we are 38 convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39) Amen. Prayerfully Father Shnork Souin, Pastor. 7 A Tribute Concert On Saturday, June 16, 2018, the Cultural Committee of Saints Sahag and Mesrob Church presented a concert honoring Garo Nichanian. Ms. Lisa Zaroogian was the Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening. Mr. Nichanian is an accomplished bass-baritone who has been singing for over forty years. Garo engaged the audience and drew them into his performance. Due to all of his endeavors to bring Armenian music to Canada, Mr. Nichanian was considered the cultural bridge between Canada and Armenia. In 1998, Mr. Nichanian received the Saint Nersess Shnorhali Medal of the Armenian Church from Catholicos, H.H. Karekin I, the supreme Patriarch of all Armenians. At the end of the evening Mr. Nichanian thanked everyone who has inspired and encouraged him. One of those people is Maestro Petrossian.. Der Hayr Shnork Souin gave the closing remarks for the evening. He also related a personal story about Canada. He recalls meeting with Garo s father, the Very Reverend Father, Housig Nichanian, who told Der Hayr that he thought that one day he would become a priest. Due to the fact that this was a celebratory event, the cultural committee members went all out to make it special. There were two kinds of wine and of course coffee. There was an inordinate amount of specialty foods from boereg to Napoleans prepared by members. 9 Sunday School Graduation Congratulations to our 4 graduates: Amara D Antuono, Grace Ferrara, Julia Hazian, and Mark Shaghalian. Here are their essays. Amara D Antuono Why Is It Important to Raise Your Children in the Armenian Church? From a very young age, I have been an active member of the Armenian Church. When I first started Sunday School, I was so excited every week for the snacks that my amazing teachers would provide for me and for all the fun projects that I would get to do. As I grew up in the community, I have made many irreplaceable friends, such as the amazing people that I am graduating with today. As I look back at all the wonderful memories that I have made in this church, I realize that I would not have so many fond memories if I had not been raised in this Armenian Church. I learned how to love God from all my amazing teachers, I learned how to build memories from Grace, Julia and Mark, and I learned how to become a better person from all the people in the church who I am happy to call my family. When I talk to my friends about their churches, or when I go to another church, I notice that they are not such closely-knit communities as the Armenian Church. At other churches, the people don t talk to each other for exhausting hours after mass is over, and they definitely don t come up to you and say, I was looking for your name in the paper, how has your season been going? However frustrated I may appear to be when my mom decides to talk to everyone (and I mean everyone) before we leave church, I am glad that she does it because it gives me a chance to catch up with people that I may not see as often as I d like to. Overall, the Armenian Church is an amazing place with amazing people and I am extremely glad that my mom decided to raise me in such a wonderful community. Grace Ferrera Good Morning, Before I begin I would like to start off by recognizing the teachers and influential church members who have significantly impacted my time here as a member of the Sunday School. Mr. Mark taught me the value of patience, and has helped me grow to learn and love the youngest members of our Sunday School today. Mr. Steve never failed to thoroughly answer any question I had about Church. Mr. David, as intelligent as he is, never judged me when I said something that was maybe not so intelligent. Ms. Janice and Ms. Anna showed me the importance of relating Church to everyday life, and finally, if it wasn t for Miss Debbie who encouraged my Mom to have me join Sunday School, I wouldn t be up here today. I would also like to thank Fr Shnork for always putting a smile on my face with his huge personality and Steve Meg who encouraged me no actually forced me to attend Sports Weekend where I met some amazing people from different churches around the country. It was mid-april 2015 and as I was leaving Church, I noticed a huge countdown clock in the lobby. I was curious as to why there was a countdown to April 24th...why would the church have a countdown clock for MY birthday! Needless to say, on the way home from Church that day, I learned about Martyr s Day and the importance of April 24th. It s not that I didn t know about the Armenian Genocide, as my greatgrandfather was a survivor, but what I began to understand was the Armenian people. I learned how the Armenian people would persevere and more importantly remain hopeful and true to their faith. I was born in 2001, the year of 9/11 when our country was attacked. Although I wasn t old to enough to understand what had happened, in time I learned that our country came together and remained hopeful. Over the past few years as a student I have seen the tragedies that have taken place in our schools. Although I still cannot fathom how these atrocities could happen, I have seen students come together and remain hopeful. On Sunday when I come to Church I look forward to communion I feel that I get to start the week with a clean slate. When I leave Church I feel peaceful. I seem to forget about the violence, the hate, and the disaster that constantly puts our minds at unease - and I am hopeful. Coming to Sunday School these past 10 years has taught me more than Bible stories. I have learned and cherished values that will forever remain a part of me - and will surely be instilled into my future children. A year from now I ll know where the next four years will take me. Whether I m close to home or 3,000 miles away in sunny California, I know if I m ever homesick and there is an Armenian Church nearby, I can go on a Sunday morning and feel like I m home. Julia Hazian Good morning. Before I begin, I would like to thank you all for being here today. I chose to write about the person that shaped who I am as an Armenian Christian and left a significant impact on my life. On April 7, 2014 my life changed. As I was sitting in the car with my father, he told me he had something to tell me. Nana passed away, he said. I can still remember the immediate waterfall of tears running down my face. The freezing chills down my spine. The confusing thoughts of why bad things happen to good people. I was only thirteen, unaware of what this truly meant. When we arrived home, I sprinted to my room praying to God that maybe - just maybe - this was not true and she would come back to us. At her funeral, Der Hayr asked me to read Psalm 23. It reads, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the April/May/June Paros Saints Sahag and Mesrob

10 Lord forever. While I was reciting the prayer, tears began to stream down my face, but I composed myself because I knew that is what my Nana would have wanted. After the service had ended, I repeated the psalm in my head over and over again and I knew exactly what its purpose was. She will always be with me to protect me from evil and join me in times of happiness. My Nana, Iris Kalian, was originally the person that encouraged my Christian beliefs and consistently reminded me to be a faithful person. Not only did she leave her mark on her immediate family, but on her church family as well. When I returned to Sunday School the following week, many people approached me telling me what an amazing person she was. From past students to close friends and even acquaintances, she was truly admired. Not only on Sundays, but every day she reminds me what an Armenian Christian really is: faithful, forgiving, and loving. My Nana always put others before herself, no matter what the circumstance was. She constantly made sure we were full of Armenian food and managed to never miss a single event for her grandchildren. From being beyond truthful to thoughtful, my Nana brought out the good in everyone. When she passed, I did not quite understand why. It took me a while to realize that everything does in fact happen for a reason. Rather than allowing it to tear me apart, I stood strong in my beliefs and followed in her footsteps. I continued to attend Sunday School and then became an assistant teacher in a classroom. So, yes, as my Nana would believe, may there always be good even in the worst of times. She is the person I can thank for my beautiful Christian faith and the reason that I will always practice our beliefs in my daily life. Mark Shaghalian Why is it important that you raise your children in the Armenian Church and live according to the Gospel everyday? Before I give any remarks I'd like to thank you all for coming this morning and give my heartfelt thanks to all the Sunday School teachers who have meant so much to me throughout the years and who have helped me throughout the way to reach this point. As humans we are all imperfect and flawed and sinners in someway or another. Only through God and Jesus and the Holy Church can we seek to become less imperfect through staying on God s path for us. It is especially important that our children are raised in the church at such a young and important time in their lives. The Church and God help develop us and our children both spiritually and religiously. Sunday School has help me grow and develop as a person and has brought me closer to God. Our children should also be able to have this awesome experience. At Sunday School I have not only made friends and done enjoyable things like wrapped Christmas presents for needy families but also attended Badarak and started to become a member of our Church community. All of our special Sunday School teachers instill in our children valuable lessons and show them what it is like to give service and be dedicated to something as important as our Church. These are just some of the reasons why it is important to raise our children in the Church. Also important is bringing our children to attend Church every Sunday and having them attend Badarak. Doing this teaches them discipline and helps give them a sense of purpose. In the Church Sanctuary our children may sing beautiful hymns and participate in the Badarak and certainly not to be forgotten receive Holy Communion. There is not another place on Earth where our children can receive such a rewarding and fulfilling experience. It is also important that we raise our children according to the way of Gospel. Only through the Gospel can we read God s word and receive the teachings of Jesus. Our children should along with everything else they are learning should be able to learn from the Gospel. Raising our Children according to the Gospel is important because they are able to learn from the ways of Jesus and learn important lessons and parables. Throughout my time in Sunday School I have found reading from the Gospel an interesting but hard-working experience. Children are often told to read books but it is very important the Gospel is one of the first books they read and live by. Raising our Children to live their life according to the Gospel is important because it will help make them better people. For the same reason it is also important they are raised in the Church. Doing this is the way to bring them closer to God which is why it is so important to raise them this way. Children are considered a gift from God so it is important to raise them in God s way by making them true servants of God by attending Church and reading the Gospel. Organization continued from Page 6 The ONCD ( Orthodox Natural Church Development ) was formed in our church/parish to help build community and improve the quality of parish life. As you may recall, several focus groups were held centering around why our parish scored so low in fostering loving relationships. This is what we would like to do to help build more loving relationships in our parish church: Form a welcoming environment by establishing a welcoming committee whose responsibilities would include staffing a welcome table in Egavian on Sundays with a focus on newcomers or people who attend church infrequently; plus, create a pamphlet (1 pager)/ flyer re: church and a pew welcome card. For Christenings, the committee would welcome family and attendees, explain what will happen and accompany family and friends to the sanctuary. Encourage all church organizations to sponsor Sunday Fellowship/Coffee hours 2 or 3 times per year, present the mission/function of the organization; function, how it contributes to church life and provide a forum for Q&A and a way to join. ONCD would like to sponsor a special coffee hour for new members, newly married, and families of newly the Christened. We would like to see photos and short bios of these families in the Paros Help start a college bound program that connects our out-of-town college students with churches in their college areas. Help parishioners with specific needs to connect with other parishioners who may have skills, resources to help fill the needs. If you would like to contribute in any way to help building more loving relationships in our parish church, please contact one of the ONCD team members: Margaret Chevian (margo1915@gail.com) Mark Malkasian (mark-malkasian@sbcglobal.com) Martha Jamgochian (jmartha9@gmail.com) Narine Lemme (narine.o.lemme@gmail.com) Steve Simon (stevan7simon@gmail.com) April/May/June Paros Saints Sahag and Mesrob

11 Armenian School for our needs, we also are in need of sponsors to help assist with school materials, monthly activities and events. Armenian School started offering Eastern Armenian for the very first time in the school year. We started with 21 students which grew to 29 that year. The majority of our students are able to read and write Armenian. Armenian School staff has been organizing traditional monthly educational and enjoyable events and activities for our student, which enriches the Armenian culture. In conclusion the Armenian school staff would like to thank Father Shnork Souin and Parish council for continuing support. Our students and parents love participating in cook Ghapama, baking choreg, coloring eggs with red onion skins and learning about Easter and our other activities. May 9th Armenian School staff organized a patriotic concert with Ruben Sasuntsi & Gohar Hovhannisyan celebrating our May 9th triple victory (victory of world war 2, Shushi and the victory of Velvet revolution ), also our 100th anniversary of the first republic of Armenia. Our community was so inspired with the folk and patriotic concert. Everybody enjoyed it so much that they couldn t stay seated, the concert kept extending, nobody wanted to go home and all of our students and parents are expecting and demanding for more concerts and similar events. During and after the concert our students couldn t express their gratitude enough that they stated their pride and understanding of what being an Armenian truly means. Our annual hands went very successful; everyone had their part to perform. The Armenian school staff wishes to extend our school time and have additional educational and culturally activities. We will be continuing our educational and enjoyable actives, summer camp, to be able to take our first graduate students to Armenia and much more. In order to have Armenian school running successfully we will be continuing our fundraisings Dearest Joyce, Martha and Anna: Thank you so much for your School s generous donation of $ towards this year s Lenten Drive. As long ago as it seems (!), I hope it was a meaningful Lent and that this giving was part of a season rich with spiritual focus. We re happy this year to be earmarking these funds for two outstanding organizations. Feeding America is appropriately known as the nation s leading domestic hunger-relief charity, distributing food to over 46 million Americans each year, many of them children and seniors. Our gift will also support the FAR-sponsored program providing food, equipment, and transportation to disabled children in the especially challenged region of Lori. How fitting that we have joined forces as the Body of Christ this season to do with less than our more than enough so that others may have enough to live and to live with dignity. Kindly convey our deep appreciation to your staff, students, and families for all their worthy efforts. With love and gratitude, Elise April/May/June Paros Saints Sahag and Mesrob

15 My youth pilgrimage to Jerusalem. I was picked to go on this trip from my pastor Father Shnork Souin of my Providence Parish, and I'm so grateful for this major opportunity to renew my faith as an Armenian Christian- and what better way to dive deeper into the history and the word of God by literally walking on the very ground where he was born, taught, performed miracles, was crucified and resurrected into Heaven. The feeling is so surreal. I believe every Armenian Christian should experience this trip at least once in their lifetime, as it is an extraordinary journey through the holiest land and holds a great deal of Armenian presence and history linked to the earliest ages of Christianity. - Hasmik Gevorkian April/May/June Paros Saints Sahag and Mesrob
