1 The Angler ANGLICAN PARISH OF THE OROUA WINTER 2018 Wendy s blurb Introducing Kelly-Anne Sargentina Bishop Richard Randerson Seminar Mercy Ships Lynda & Bill Williams Upcoming events page 6 & back page HOME COMMUNION HOUSEBOUND PARISHIONERS, or anyone unable to attend services due to ill health or incapacity, and would like communion brought to you, please let the office know and arrangements will be made. CONTACTS: Rural Dean: Ven. Wendy Scott Parish Administrator: Vicki Gleave anglicans@oroua.org.nz Rural Dean s Warden: Bryan Guy Peoples Warden: Debbie Seymour
2 Vicar s Blurb My hope is that the winter fuel bill you face has some elasticity. After such a great summer I guess we can expect winter to bite but, whether it is my older bones, it seems to be biting hard at the moment. Here in the parish it appears that winter is a time of hunkering down. Many of our older parishioners have either been struck down with chest infections, hospital admissions or it s too cold to consider coming out. I want to ensure people that the church is always warm on a Sunday morning and we appreciate the effort you make to come and connect with our worshiping family. If you are not well and would appreciate a visit please do not hesitate to ring any of the ministry team or the office and we will arrange a visit. A problem shared is a problem halved, as my granny used to say. We have been working as a leadership team to identify ways we can be more effective for our community, ways to live out our Gospel that will meet the needs of our wider community. We have looked at strengthening our support to Manchester House through their foodbank. With winter the increased demand is substantial so please consider being generous. We are encouraging people to volunteer for the 2 op shop, if you re able to contribute they would be very grateful. Some of what we can offer is to share information, to be a voice for justice and to meet people in their struggles, to let people know they re not alone. We ve invited Dr Richard Randerson to speak to us about two pressing issues we all face, Climate Change and the End of Life bill currently being debated by Government. Please join us on th Wednesday 25 July at 5.30pm, for discussion followed by soup and rolls which will be provided. The second seminar evening we re running is in August. As a church we walk alongside families who are grieving the death of a loved one. Whether the grief is current or from a time gone by, understanding that what we feel is never in isolation, and how others have travelled that road can give us a sense of hope. Please look out for further advertising of this event and come along; bring a family member or a friend. It will be a time of information sharing and an opportunity to learn more about the issues we all face. Keep an eye out for things going on around the place and join in, it makes such a difference when we spend time together. Bless you all Wendy Website: The Anglican Parish of the Oroua
3 KELLY-ANNE SARGENTINA Born and bred in the Manawatu. I reside in Palmerston North but am blessed to be part of the dynamic worshipping Whanau that makes up our Anglican Oroua Parish. I am an Accredited Parish Chaplain, having completed a diploma in Christian Ministry Studies. As a Chaplain I am deeply committed to Pastoral Care and serving wherever there is a need. My God given passion is to serve those that are marginalised in society. My current Ministries include assisting at St. Mary s in Beaconsfield as a Lay Minister. I m a member of our Prison Ministry Team, a volunteer at the Arohanui Hospice in Palmerston North and am involved in Healing Ministry as I hold an anointing licence. If I can be of any help to you or someone you know please get in touch. I d welcome an invite to come and meet with you so we can get to know how I can best serve you and our community. As a pastoral carer I m hear to listen. I look forward to hearing from you. Blessings Kelly-Anne BISHOP RICHARD RANDERSON SEMINAR Angler We have invited Bishop Richard Randerson to come and present to us two of his seminars on Wednesday 25th July at St John's Church, Feilding. 5:30pm Climate change and the church's response: the new government has brought fresh energy to this urgent issue, especially with its proposed Zero Carbon Bill. Churches are responding and this presentation outlines the seriousness of our situation, examines our theology, and sets out practical responses at parish level. Soup and rolls will be served in between the two seminars 6:45pm Euthanasia and End of Life Choice: this topic is currently before the Justice Select Committee and raises important issues of Christian ethics, spirituality and pastoral care. 35,000 submissions have been received. The presentation provides an overview of the issues with a summary of the submission made by the diocesan bishops. Both seminars will be well worth attending. Spread the word and invite your friends to come along too. For more information contact the Parish Office. 3
4 Transforming lives through hope, healing and heart From Lynda and Bill Williams We are excited to have been accepted to serve for six weeks on the Christian based African Mercy ship, as volunteers, using our skills as an operating theatre nurse and ship engineer to bring hope, healing and love to some of the poorest people in Western Africa, by assisting with free life-saving surgeries. The ship will be stationed in Conakry, Guinea, (between Senegal and Sierra Leone) and we will be travelling via Bangkok and Ethiopia on August 18 th, returning on September 30 th. We will be working a 45 hour week on board, with Lynda working in the eye theatres to bring sight to those blinded by very dense cataracts, and Bill in the engine room keeping the generators, water treatment and air conditioners running. We will be working alongside an international team of volunteers and local staff learning skills to build capacity for services when the ship leaves for another posting in 11 months time. We value your support in partnership with us in this mission of Gods work to help transform the lives of individuals and communities, to help the blind to see and the lame to walk, as modelled by Jesus. Please pray for our safe travel, the advance service crews setting up the outreach clinics and dock facilities; patients safety on their journeys, and their hope for healing; crew recruitment, and for wisdom of the African nations leaders that influence the lives of thousands. We would like you to be a part of this mission with us by contributing to our fundraising effort. Not only do we work for free, but need to pay for crew fees of NZ$1000 per month each, and undertake extensive immunisation and medications prior to departure. We are planning a fundraising Garage sale for Saturday July 28, 8am, in St John s Church hall. Please indicate if you are able to help on the day or to set up the hall on Friday evening. All items donated will be gratefully accepted before Friday 27th. Any large (or small) items needing to be collected, please phone Bill on Cash gifts can be made to help us cover the crew fees and are eligible for tax deduction receipts when paid through the New Zealand Mercy ships account, giving our designated code. For further information please ring Lynda Thank you for your investment in our partnership in this incredible mission opportunity, in whichever way you can support us in God s work. For more information on Mercy ships go to 4
