The Messenger March 2013 Over the Pastor's Shoulder One of the best books I have read in my life is Mountains Beyond Mountains, written by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tracy Kidder. It is a biography of a man named Paul Farmer who grew up in the rural poverty of the Deep South, attended Duke as an undergraduate and then Harvard Medical School, and now divides his time between Harvard where he teaches, and central Haiti where he operates a medical hospital. Suffice it to say Farmer lives in two different worlds: teaching at a place like Harvard, where most everyone is successful, and practicing in Haiti, where most everyone is desperate. Toward the end of the book an emaciated young man is flown to Boston for emergency surgery, with funds raised by Farmer s non-profit organization. Later the young man would die, and one of the staff would question whether this was an appropriate expenditure of the $20,000 it took to fly him there. This gets back to Farmer and he has a conversation about it with Tracy Kidder. Could the money have been spent in a better way? Farmer responds, Yeah, but there are so many ways of saying that. For example, why didn t the airline company that makes money, why didn t they pay for the flight? That s a way of saying it. Or how about this way? How about if I say, I have fought for my whole life a long defeat. How about that? How about if I said that all it adds up to is defeat? A long defeat. I have fought the long defeat and have brought other people on to fight the long defeat, and I m not going to stop because we keep losing. Now I actually think that sometimes we may win. I don t dislike victory, no, no, I m not complaining. You know, people from our background, we re used to being on the victory team, and actually what we re really trying to do is to make common cause with the losers. Those are two very different things. We want to be on the winning team, but at the risk of turning our backs on the losers, no, it s not worth it. So you fight the long defeat. Where did Paul Farmer get the phrase, the long defeat? It is from his favorite book, The Lord of the Rings, where Galadriel says, Through the ages we have fought the long defeat. And Galadriel had sprung from the profound imagination of JRR Tolkien, who once wrote in a letter to a friend, I am a Christian so I do not expect history to be anything but a long defeat though it contains some samples, glimpses of final victory. My friends, just like Paul Farmer, we know that there is much in this world that runs counter to God s goodness and grace. Things have not always worked out as we ve hoped or planned. In our striving to be faithful we are no strangers to defeat and set-backs. But it is our glimpse of final victory that propels us forward even in the midst of defeat. In the resurrection of Jesus Christ we find the much needed assurance that death and the dark shadow it casts on the human experience will not have the final word in the human story. Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. 2 Our March Adult Sunday School will be led by Rev. Dr. Tim L. Johnson, North Park Theological Seminary. We will be discussing Who Are We? and issues of identity. The sacraments are key reference points for knowing who we are individually and collectively. Join us in the Fireside Room on Sundays at 9:30 A.M Friends and Members write: When I was looking for a church home the two top criteria were: Is it a place where I can grow and mature spiritually and is it a place that welcomes and encourages others? Walking into the Adult Sunday School class at Trinity solidly confirmed my decision to join. The teachers are comfortable, secure and eager to expand our understanding and journey with us on our Christian way. What an extra privilege we have each Sunday morning. Pat Petersen ***** My Sunday morning worship has always begun with Sunday School as a child and now as an adult. Learning, discipline and discipleship are three gifted components which enhance my week so as I open the combination each Sunday morning I m ready and willing to accept His will. Barbara Johnson ***** I attend the Adult Sunday class because as Christians we need the continuing education that is offered by our knowledgeable teachers, many of whom are professors at university with degrees in their specialty. It is a great opportunity to learn historical information that is not only interesting but gives us insight on how to live in our chaotic world. Our attendance shows we appreciate the time and effort that our teachers spend preparing for the class. John Weszely ***** All my life I have attended Sunday School and still there are so many things I can t understand or know. Every Sunday we have wonderful, dedicated teachers come to teach us. Yes, each Sunday when I leave the class, I feel I have learned something new. Arline Mueller ***** I deeply regret that the first 10 years I attended Trinity I didn t attend the Adult Sunday School class. But now I do. The class of lay teachers and professional instructors have been so interesting and informative about historical, cultural and spiritual subjects. Diana Eigenbauer Women s Tuesday Bible Study Often during our studies we quote Romans 8:28, And we know that in all things God works together for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose. A much revered claim experienced individually and collectively in our years together. I believe the foundation of our current study took His planning, guidance and hands on input by being in the developmental stage while we pursued the person and work of the Holy Spirit, the enabler. And yes, I stand amazed at His willingness to open areas contingent upon thought and action by setting an easy flow for March/April on the heels of winter In months to come a title will give identification to our work in progress but we extend this lead to God, creator, to open doors and put His stamp on the title page and entire study. His lead will give us new growth into areas yet to be explored as we work according to His plan and purpose. This Holy Season gives rise to our acknowledging the role of God s Son, Jesus Christ, channel of the new message of adoption, salvation and eternal life and will stress how we return thanks through prayer, faith, trust, joy, discipline and discipleship to the creator of all things. We will walk old roads, new roads and roads less traveled together, with a spring in our every step, as we are in accord with the Three-in-One who set forth plans for joy, fellowship and continued understanding while we daily accept grace, blessings, gifts and surprises. God only knows how He will amaze and surprise us this month and in time yet to come. Fireside Room, every Tuesday 9:30-10:45 A.M. P.S. Jeremiah 29:11 Barbara Johnson Church Chuckle A Sunday School teacher asked, Johnny, do you say prayers before eating? No sir, he replied, We don t have to; my mom is a good cook!

3 Career Connections Career Connections has had the pleasure of hosting two outside presenters to speak to our group. Our first meeting of the year held on January 14, we invited Judy Grant, who is the Director of Employment Services from a company called Employment & Employer Services, Inc. (E&ES). E&ES have helped over 72,500 people find good jobs and more than 3,000 businesses recruit talent. Through government funding, E&ES partners with the Illinois worknet Centers and provides career counseling, job search strategy and interview readiness training. They will also refer candidates to business partner employers for employment. Back for a second visit on January 28, Peggy Heenan from Moraine Valley returned and spoke on techniques and strategies for mature job seekers. As in the past, Peggy spoke about all the flexible learning options at Moraine as well as their Job Resource Center. Moraine also sponsors a Career Paths & Coffee Speaker Series free of charge and open to all adults. The next program to be held at Moraine will be on March 7 moderated by WGN Radio s Bill Moller on how to present yourself with poise, energy and confidence in order to land your next job. Moving on to February 11, Dennis Parney presented a discussion on Reaching the Decision-Maker and how to get past the gatekeeper. Half the difficulty in getting a job is getting to the decision maker to make your case. Challenges like voice mail and blind addresses can make for a very tough task. Utilization of multiple forms of communication is important to make contact and it is important to stay upbeat in your pursuit. We continue to meet new faces, (as many as six new people at our last meeting) and are delighted they seek us out. A comment made by one of our members who visits four other job clubs in the area, noted that Career Connections is the largest of the assemblies. Our statistics show that we typically have an average of 28 in attendance at each meeting. With that in mind, we re here for as long as God ordains us to be. Denise Krueger -- A sampling of Career Connections Thank-You Notes Hi Denise, Dennis and Tom, I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. Wanted to let you know that I did get a job through your hard work at Career Connections. I have been working for and with wonderful people at Palos-Gaidas Funeral Home in Palos Hills. There is so much to learn and an unbelievable amount of work that goes into preparing for one funeral! This funeral home is run by compassionate and professional people and this is a great opportunity for me so I want to thank you all for the time and encouragement you have given me. Have only been going to Career Connections since the end of October. Thank you so much for your efforts!!! Marilyn Denise, I was very glad to see Peggy Heenan from Moraine Valley last Monday. Thanks for booking her. She was a great pleasure to see and I got a lot of information from her presentation. Thank you Denise and all the people from Career Connections that are helping unemployed people. It is a pleasure attending these meetings. Ron Hi Denise, It was a pleasure to attend your meeting and I plan on attending all your sessions as I look forward to continuing my quest to find employment. I did send in my resume to two of the job leads you provided and I have my fingers crossed! Thank you for being so welcoming and making us feel at home. I appreciate you and your team and the services you provide to what seems to be a growing (unfortunately) group of people that has been discarded by their employers. Everyone is in my prayers and with God's help we can again be among the group of "working people. Thank you! Laurene Sunday, March 3 Retiring Offering Together We Cope Thank you so much for the love, support, prayers and kind gestures that were extended to Mother and me during these past several months. 5 Something You Should Know! Kudos to the overwhelming charitable response of the Pryme Tymers. These are people on fixed incomes and some with very limited resources. Because of the brevity of our church annual reports, sometimes information is not detailed. Pryme Tymers collected 4,825 pounds of food for the Salvation Army Food Pantry in After they presented a program, over $2,600 was collected, much given in personal checks going directly to the Salvation Army. This money doesn t flow through our church books because it isn t deposited into our account. Too bad that so many in our society today never know the blessing of giving to others. This group of eclectic seniors found the answer and have set an excellent example to follow. It s That Time of Year Again! Join us for the annual Spring Cleaning Bonanza! Roll up your sleeves and give us a few hours or more of your time. The Trustees have scheduled two Saturdays, March 2 and March 9, starting at 9 A.M. to get the church ready for the Easter season. All wood surfaces need to be wiped down with Murphy s Oil Soap and all Venetian blinds need dusting, to name a few of the tasks. If you are unable to help on a Saturday perhaps you can spend a little time during the week. Sheets will be posted outside each room with project that need to be done. Cleaning supplies will be furnished. Just cross off the project you complete so we know when a room is cleaned completely. The early bird gets to choose which projects they prefer doing! Thank you for your help in getting these projects done. Rummage Sale Planned Trinity s Rummage sale is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, May 17 & 18. This will help us all declutter and reorganize our home and garages this spring! Because we are limited to what a pick-up truck can handle, we will not accept heavy old T.V. s or entertainment centers. Items can be dropped off at church starting Monday, May 13. Donated items can include the following: household items, small appliances, glassware, linens, clean clothing, shoes, purses, luggage, electronics, furniture, sport and outdoor equipment, toys, jewelry, etc. To be successful we will need many volunteers. Not only will we have fun working together, but it is Trinity s chance to reach out and help others. Proceeds from this year s sale will go towards Every Kid A Camper. For more information you may contact John or Lorraine Weszely. Join us on Sunday, March 17, for Let s Do Lunch Every Kid A Camper Fundraiser. We will enjoy some Italian cuisine in Peterson Hall following the morning worship service. This is a great opportunity to visit with your old friends, make a few new ones and help send some of our youth to summer camp. Mark your calendars today! Family Night Monday, March :30 P.M. Family Night Cooking Show. A local restaurant owner and chef will demonstrate how to make a simple meal at home right before your eyes. This will also be our dinner for the evening! This is guaranteed to be even better than Good Morning America, so mark your calendars today. Thought to Ponder Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted. Albert Einstein

6 the greater lights. From our darkness they become fascinating, elusive and mysterious. Fasting, giving something up or just focusing our attention during Lent isn t only a reminder of this time in which we prepare our hearts for the joy of Easter. It s also a time when we, if we re careful, can leave behind the dazzling sights and sounds of the world, and see more clearly the subtle beauties of God s kingdom around us. May this be a truly memorable time of transformation for you and yours. Geoff Twigg You Can See the Stars from Here At the service of worship on Ash Wednesday it was my privilege to read a paragraph from the Covenant book of worship to those assembled in our sanctuary. The paragraph, entitled Observing a Holy Lent, is a description of the benefits we find in setting aside time and other priorities to focus our attention on God during this period leading up to Easter. I don t know whether you re meditating on the themes of Lent each day, as I am, or if you chose to give something up for Lent this year. It s a matter of personal preference or discipline, and no one is keeping a record. Giving something up is just a way of reminding us that this is a time of selfdenial, of focus on the important things of our faith, and particularly on prayer and repentance. Back in the summer of 2008, Vicki and I were on vacation on the Maine coast, and we went on a special boat trip. On that date, July 4 th, the regular Friday evening tour of local lighthouses was enhanced by stopping for a while in Booth Bay Harbor to watch the fireworks. The display was extravagant and made for a great celebration to end the day; we d had a lovely week and, as we began to head back along the coast, my thoughts were turning to the long drive home which was due to start the next morning. However, the best experience was yet to come. Moving a few hundred yards off the coast to stay clear of the rocks (yes, there are hidden rocks, and that s why there are lighthouses ) we were surprised to find that the ambient light faded very rapidly. It s amazing how the usual light around us can make us unaware of the myriad fainter lights above. Suddenly (it seemed) the stars were shining brightly, and we could see hundreds, even thousands more stars than usual. It was a truly spectacular display, and while the experience was much less kinetic than the dazzling fireworks, in its own way it was much more impressive. The best was yet to come. I began, as I stared into the massive array of pinpoints of light, to see slightly dimmer lights and shapes that moved across the night sky. These had been totally imperceptible before, even when some stars were visible. As I watched and became used to the darkness, more and more movement was present in the vista; I ve rarely been in such a dark place, and so I d never before been able to see the beautiful, shimmering satellites. Like silver moons they reflect the fainter light of the stars, or pass as shadows before Events for Our Youth: Sunday, March 3 Interactions Bleekers Bowling 2-4 P.M. 9 impacted students and to continue to nurture the faith that has captured them in all of its new and exciting ways. As our season of camp fundraisers jumps to its new start for the year, let's remember all the opportunities we've been given thanks to camping ministries: Winter and Summer camps, Family Winter Weekends, and (starting this year) Confirmation Retreats. We have a lot to look forward to, but let's also remember to pray and give generously to help provide a disorienting and impacting experience for our kids and families. Coming up Camp This is hard to believe, but we already need to start thinking about summer camp! Early registration is coming up March 15 for all overnight camps at Covenant Harbor. By the time this newsletter hits the stands, we'll have already had our first camp rally and the first Let's Do Lunch will be March 17 with several more to come during the spring. While that might seem too hard to believe, those planning Family Winter Weekend are thinking even further down the line for that event in the Winter of 2014 (January 31, 2014 February 2, 2014). There is already a flurry of activity and fundraising planned to help the church prepare for that event. I have a personal commitment and love for camping ministries, so I am always pleased to see a church that is dedicated to camping ministries right along with me. So, while I am pleased that Trinity looks at the support of Covenant Harbor and Covenant Point as non-negotiable facets of our ministry to youth, I'd like to take some time to reflect one big reason of why we should work so hard to support our camps. It is disorienting. Yes, disorienting! Camp is fun, absolutely. The campers look forward to seeing their friends every year, true. Yet a camp experience is just outside of the normal. It is fun, but more fun than they have during all the rest of the year. It features songs, but they will probably never encounter songs like that in any church setting; and that's the point. Events like CHIC, or a summer camp, or Acquire the Fire (for those who know of it), are all impact events. Impact events are intended to be short-lived events that have a particular influence that is unique to the settings where they are held. And the influence is unique because the experience is unlike others that a camper is going to experience so campers are given the space and time to explore new possibilities. Whatever they may have been in our churches, campers are free to create a new identity. Whatever notions campers have of God are allowed to be seen in a new light that can only come with a change in scenery. Even as they have fun or go crazy with new worship songs, some of their barriers to making new commitments to God are lowered as they loose themselves to the experience of worshiping God in a new way. God works through our times of disorientation. These impact ministries do not replace the church, but they aren't intended to. Rather they are a tremendous resource for the church while the church's responsibility is to take these Pastor Zach Articles for the April Messenger are due on Sunday, March 17. Remember to spring forward one hour on Saturday night, March 9! Set your clocks ahead so that you won t be late for church on Sunday, March 10.
