The purpose of the NEWSLETTER is to inform the congregation about upcoming events and activities in the life of the Church. Articles for the Newsletter should be submitted by the 20th of the month. ISSN # June 2016 Volume 52 Issue 10 Grace Lutheran Church Office Manager Custodian 213 Roosevelt Avenue Glennis Olson Lynn Ohman Detroit Lakes, MN Home: Home: (218) Cell: Cell: gracelutheran@arvig.net Pastor Website: Pastor Ann Newgard-Larson Organist: Audrey Savig Home CELEBRATING 500 YEARS OF FAITH On October 31, 1517, a man named Martin Luther stood by a church door in Wittenberg, Germany, with a large sheet of paper, a pocketful of nails and a hammer. Martin wanted to share the Good News he d read in Ephesians 2:8. You have been saved by grace through faith. Believing that We are the priesthood of all believers he wrote a list of of sentences about God s grace and free forgiveness. This list is called the 95 Theses, and using the media of his day, the printing press, Martin nailed the 95 Theses on the door of Castle Church. This marks the Reformation movement causing great changes through churches around the world. Martin s list was a dispute on the power of indulgences. The 95 Theses were momentous in awakening dormant crises that people were living through and offered pathways out of them. The theological battle cry was justification by grace through faith, which had concrete consequences. The nailing of the 95 Theses led to the message that God s grace is not for sale it is a free gift of God s grace. Because of the Reformation, people all over the world worship and read the Bible in their own languages. Music fills churches everywhere. Beginning October 30, 2016 churches will begin the 500 th celebration of the Reformation. The Minneapolis Institute of Art will have a presentation Art and the Reformation which will be shown October 30, 2016-January 15, Look for more events celebrating Martin Luther s historical event which became a symbolic day and Luther became a figure larger than life! 1

2 What are you thankful for at Grace? October 2016 I m thankful for the insightful sermons I hear on Sundays at Grace thanks to Pastor Ann s long time experience studying the Bible as well as human nature. I think the local girl who grew up to become a minister in the Lakes area understands the importance of using humor, personal anecdotes about her family of four, and insight from her text studies every Tuesday with fellow Christian ministers. What are you thankful for at Grace? I m thankful for the new spirit at Grace that has a variety of people of all ages stepping forward to lend a hand whether they have flipped pancakes, picked up pine cones, ushered or read at services, taught Sunday School, served on the church council, participated in Bible studies, prayed for a sick member, made a quilt, or just smiled and said, Hello! Have you ever thought about what Grace Lutheran has given you? I got to analyzing how many of you I would have known if I had not accepted Pastor Mark Olson s invitation to visit about fifteen years ago. I might have met a handful of you through some other organizations in town but most of you probably would not have crossed my path, nor would I have crossed yours. I wouldn t have pondered the scriptures with you nor been uplifted by a hymn or communion. I certainly wouldn t have picked up garbage in ditches with you! I m glad I came to visit and I m glad I stayed. What are you thankful for at Grace? I have had moments by myself on my pontoon, just taking in the splendor of God s creation beautiful sunsets that are more special in my relationship with God than moments in a building but I like having the stability and structure in my life a church family offers me. I like knowing I can come to Grace and tell you about that awesome moment I had on my pontoon. I like knowing I have friends to share that tale with. In November we will set aside a Sunday when we can estimate our monetary giving pattern for the next year. It helps the church council and minister figure out what we can afford in programming, staffing, and the nuts and bolts like heating and cooling the church! It s just like you with your personal finances, you want to know where you stand in order to make plans for the year. So...please give some thought to what you d like to pledge and more importantly, what that pledge represents in friendships with one another and development of a deeper relationship with God. Your volunteer time is priceless (and appreciated at Grace) but we also need to know how to structure our spending. Thanks in advance for your commitment to stewardship and thanks for your friendship! Kathy Coyle Church council president 2

3 October 2016 Happy Equinox Day! One of my friends really, really, really doesn t like the solstice in June because it is the beginning of the days getting shorter.her favorite day therefore is the winter solstice because the days get longer.i like the day the clocks fall back.which is coming on November 6 the same day we celebrate All Saints this year this year, November 9 th may be my favorite day because the election will be over! How I wish all candidates would heed the 8 th commandment, you know the one about bearing false witness and explaining other s actions in the kindest way possible and would perhaps stick with issues that may be difficult, but need to be discussed and deliberated with wisdom and pragmatism. Keep all the candidates and voters everywhere in your prayers. Thanks to everyone who worshipped in the park for God s Work, Our Hands on September 18 and helped out with the service projects! Many hands made the job of cleaning the church yard and ditches along Highway 34 go much faster than we anticipated. I enjoyed spending time with the other congregations in Detroit Lakes and with the members of Grace as we worked together. Confirmation is off and running students from both churches are meeting at Bakke through December, and from January until April we will meet at Grace. This year we are studying the Old Testament stories about our ancestors in faith and how some things never seem to change and therefore, what we can learn from their interactions with God and God s people. Sunday school is going strong. If you have neighbors, friends or relatives that are not yet involved in a worship community, here s your chance to make an invitation to them! Adult Bible study will begin on Wednesday, October 28 at 10:00 at Bakke. As we did last year, we will study the lessons for the upcoming Sunday worship.so each week is selfcontained and you can come as you are able. Some local congregations and the League of Women Voters are sponsoring a community wide learning opportunity on Sunday, October 2 at M State at 1:00 Meet our Muslim Neighbors. Detroit Lakes will now have the same opportunity that the Fargo Moorhead area had to hear directly from a person of the Muslim tradition and have your questions addressed. Blessings to you! 3

Special thanks to those of you that took a day off from work to help and to the men that helped. Without all of your help, we would not have been able to accomplish this. 9 COMMUNITY EVENTS Meet Our Muslim Neighbors Date: October 2, 2016 Time: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM CDT Location: MN State Community College, 900 Highway 34 East, Detroit Lakes, MN An informal and informative discussion about Islam and the Muslim communities in the Lakes and Fargo-Moorhead areas. The event will feature Fauzia Haider, a native of Pakistan who has lived in Fargo for 20 years, and Ahmed Kamel, a professor of Computer Science & Management Information Systems at Concordia College in Moorhead who has also lived in Fargo for many years.
