e MY BELOVED IN CHRIST, I am coming out of a week filled with mixed emotions. This was the week in which Pastor Rob and I changed offices as we completed the transition. I watched a godly man pack up 47 years of memories, pictures, books, and sermons and move them into a strange office. On one hand, it broke my heart to watch a faithful servant go through this difficult task. On the other hand, I was filled with angst as I began (with great help from the staff) to unpack my materials into his old office. Several realizations began to unfold for me: 1- Pastor Rob has been the Pastor at Immanuel for longer than I have been alive, and 2- He loves this church more than I can describe in words. I began to think to myself, How can I fill these shoes? The answer is pretty simple I can t. I cannot be another version of Pastor Rob. God gifted him in ways that I am not gifted and has given him talents that I do not possess. So where does that leave us? I found the answer to that question in God s Word and through prayer. I spent quite of bit of time looking over the words that God gave to Joshua when he became the new leader of God s people. God reassured Joshua by promising, Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you (Josh 1:5). These words are similar to those that Jesus gave to His disciples when He gave them the Great Commission: I am with you, even to the end of the age (Matt 28:20). In these verses, I found great comfort to be who I am and perhaps you will as well. Let s look at two truths and a few brief application thoughts. Truth #1- God is with us. This means that God is with me as I start this new year as your pastor. He will be with me when things are going well and when I make mistakes. In both success and failure, He will be molding me into the shepherd that Immanuel needs in this new season. It also means that God is with you! He is with you in the good and the bad. He will grow you and mature you into the instrument that He will use for His own glory! God is with us and He will never forsake us. Truth #2- God does not fail. God is perfect in His nature. He does not fail because it is not possible for God to fail. Thus, not only is God with us, but He does not fail as He is working in us. He has never failed and He will not start with you or me. He is using our circumstances at this very moment in order to bring about our greater good according to His perfect will (Rom 8:28). If we keep our focus on Christ as we seek to serve Him in our own distinctiveness, then God will be glorified. It is in these two truths that I can say this: I believe that God has great things in our future. I believe that He will continue to use Immanuel to be a Bible preaching, Christ exalting, mission-minded, soulwinning, and loving church. By His grace and for His glory! PASTOR BEN 2

W H O A R E W E? T H E H E A R T B E A T & D I R E C T I O N O F I M M A N U E L PASTOR BEN SKAUG Just as the human heart pumps blood in order to keep us alive, a Church needs a heartbeat as well. A Church s heartbeat is its purpose for existing. Our purpose ebbs and flows in and through all we do and why we do it, have it, want it, or live it. It is the key factor for all major decisions, ministries, calendaring, budgets, and staffing. In fact, most of what a church does stems from its purpose. All churches exist and have their purpose in Christ and what He has commanded that we do. Therefore, we have abbreviated our understanding of Christ s marching orders to the church as the following: IMMANUEL EXISTS TO GLORIFY GOD, BY HELPING DISCIPLES TO FOLLOW AND SHARE CHRIST. back to Him. Everything that we are and do should bring God glory through our obedience to Him. He is the One we honor, love, obey, serve, and worship. (I Chron. 16:28-29) How can we accomplish this? We focus on core values that are lived out daily as a means to bring Glory to God. We have four core Values and they summarize who we are: SCRIPTURE DRIVEN DETERMINES WHO WE BECOME God s word, the Bible, is our foundation and the basis for all we believe and do As we live out this value, we know how to live life Jesus Christ is the One who fully revealed God to mankind, and He is our Lord and we follow His word Glorifying God means that we reflect His glory CONTINUED > 6

> CONTINUED WORSHIP MINDED DETERMINES OUR OUTLOOK We have a right focus - God We have a lifestyle of worshiping Him- personally and together We worship Him according to His word We live out our worship of God in all of our daily actions and thoughts- not merely on Sunday FAMILY FOCUSED DETERMINES OUR IDENTITY Encompasses two aspects of familyour Church family and your family (a family of one or more) By Church family we mean the local Church that we are part of here at Immanuel By your family we are talking about your household as part of the Church family. Your specific family (could be just you or a family of 15) joining together to live out God s purpose. In other words, we are united together for God s glory SERVICE ORIENTED DETERMINES OUR COMMITMENTS This helps us understand where we need to commit ourselves in faithful service God has gifted His people for service and called us to serve for the common good of the Church (1 Cor. 12:7) Serving has various areas, including within the Church, beyond the Church campus, and even going to the world. Often we call these ministries, evangelism and missions. THEREFORE GO AND MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS, BAPTIZING THEM IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER AND OF THE SON AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, AND TEACHING THEM TO OBEY EVERYTHING I HAVE COMMANDED YOU. AND SURELY I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS, TO THE VERY END OF THE AGE. MATT. 28:

As we live our Values rightly, God will be glorified and others will come to Christ and be helped. VISION One more aspect of being a healthy Church is VISION. Vision is our destination statement, where we are headed. Our vision for the next couple of years is: DISCIPLING AND HELPING, This means we want to grow more in fulfilling the Great Commission (Matt. 28:19-20). We can do this as we engage in: Discipling- going and sharing the Good News of Jesus; baptizing those who receive Christ and connect them into the life of the Church; and teaching, the unending role of helping people grow and serve Christ until He comes again. Helping- ministering to people within our Church family, in our community, and to the world- helping them to see and experience the love of Christ. This Vision focus over the next couple of years has as its goal, to better equip us for an even healthier future of Glorifying God in years to come. My heart and prayer is that you and your family will JOIN us for the JOURNEY. PASTOR BEN SKAUG 8

O U R M I N I S T R I E S SERVING THE BODY 9

ONLY BE VERY CAREFUL TO OBSERVE THE COMMANDMENT AND THE LAW WHICH MOSES THE SERVANT OF THE LORD COMMANDED YOU, TO LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD AND WALK IN ALL HIS WAYS AND KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS AND HOLD FAST TO HIM AND SERVE HIM WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL. JOSH. 22:5 God has blessed Immanuel Baptist with a continually growing number of ministries, all with the purpose of helping you grow as a disciple of Christ! Every person is at different stages in their lives and walks with the Lord. We here at Immanuel want to come alongside you and build you up, encourage you, and help you follow Christ. 10

IMMANUEL PRESCHOOL Every time preschoolers are at church they embark on a fun adventure that fuels their hearts, minds and spirits! Kids from birth through Kindergarten will find a loving environment with enthusiastic teachers in Immanuel s Preschool Ministry. Through play activities and story telling, teachers help to lay a foundation of spiritual growth as preschoolers get to know Jesus and what it means to follow Him. They hear, know and learn to apply the truth of God s Word through consistent and intentional teaching of Biblical truth. Our goal is to partner with parents to build a strong spiritual foundation in each child s life. The driving purpose of our Preschool Ministry is to provide a positive and influential atmosphere where purposeful and foundational biblical concepts are taught and where the family is connected to a growing support system that glorifies God by helping disciples to follow and share Christ. You will find all kinds of opportunities throughout the week including Sunday morning Bible Study, Music and Missions, AWANA, Parents Day Out and MOPS, lots of resources and encouragement for your preschooler and your family. We want your child to LOVE coming to THEIR church because it is safe, fun and full of God s love! KIM ALFORD PRESCHOOL + DAY SCHOOL DIRECTOR KALFORD@IBCHIGHLAND.ORG (909)

IMMANUEL DAYSCHOOL Immanuel Day School is an extension of our Preschool and Children s Ministries at Immanuel. Our school offers an excellent developmental and academic program that not only prepares each child for elementary school but also provides a safe and nurturing environment where the love of Christ is shared with children and their families. We offer enrollment for children 6 weeks through Pre-K as well as before and after school care for Kindergarten 5th Grades, including transportation to and from local elementary schools and Day Camp during elementary school breaks and summer. Children are educated about Biblical truths and principles though creative learning approaches, weekly chapel, scripture memory, daily Bible stories and devotions. Our classrooms are designed to enhance learning and professionally trained teachers and staff are committed to loving and guiding children through each developmental stage. KIM ALFORD PRESCHOOL + DAY SCHOOL DIRECTOR KALFORD@IBCHIGHLAND.ORG (909)

IMMANUEL KIDS MINISTRY Immanuel Kids Ministry seeks to help kids to: Know who they are in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17). Grow in the understanding of what it means to follow Christ (Phil. 3:12). Show the love of God to others by being a Christ-like example and sharing their faith (1 Cor. 11:1). Go see what needs to be done in their home, church, neighborhood, school and beyond and serve in whatever way God has made them able (Matt. 20:28). Our goal is to help kids build the foundation of a vibrant faith. We want them to learn truth about who God is and how to live to glorify Him. Our program leaders, teachers and volunteers work to engage kids in God s Word so that they will learn to seek God first in all things. We offer a wide variety of programs to meet different discipleship needs, but they all share the common vision of helping kids to know, follow, and share Christ. Each program offers an opportunity for kids to develop relationships within our faith community, and this is important to us because we want all kids to feel like they belong at Immanuel. JAIME MCWHORTER DIRECTOR OF CHILDREN S MINISTRIES JAMCWHORTER@IBCHIGHLAND.ORG (909) X

AWE-FULL MIDDLE SCHOOL MINISTRY AWE-FULL Middle School exists for the glory of God to leave us in awe. Our desire is to create a place where students can feel safe, at home, and come as they are to see their place as an active member in the local church. This will occur by following (Bible and prayer) and sharing Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit (serving and evangelism). We teach 6th- 8th grade, and would love for you to come join us one Sunday/ Wednesday/event! (Gen. 1:3, 26-28, Psalm 27:4, Matt. 22:37-39, 1 Cor. 10:31, 2 Cor. 4:6, Acts 1:8, Rev. 7:9-12). TYLER PERRY DIRECTOR OF MIDDLE SCHOOL MINISTRIES TPERRY@IBCHIGHLAND.ORG (909) X

AWAKEN HIGH SCHOOL MINISTRY We exist to glorify God by REACHING High School Students and their Families, DISCIPLING them, and SENDING them out into their world equipped with the Gospel. Our Ministry is SCRIPTURE DRIVEN helping students learn how to WORSHIP God, connect into this local FAMILY of believers, and to provide opportunities for them to SERVE both within the church and in the world around them. Ways we accomplish these things: By providing opportunities and encouraging students to invite their friends to church, youth group and events so that they can hear the gospel and see it lived out. By providing various levels of discipleship opportunities to equip our students to share the gospel and grow in Christ. By providing different ministry and mission opportunities for students to use their God given gifts and talents to bring God glory. By keeping God at the center of all that we do. Our desire is to make disciples who make disciples just as Jesus taught us to do in Matthew 28: Our group is called AWAKEN because we desire to see God bring students to life through the gospel and want to see an awakening start on our High School campuses. JOHN ARMSTRONG MINISTER OF HIGH SCHOOL (909) X

WOMEN S MINISTRY The goal of Women s Ministry is to be a place where women can develop friendships, care for one another, and grow in their love for Christ. Life can be busy as we balance family, work, and service. We want to help you find refreshment and renewal through special women s events, the study of God s Word and encouragement from one another. The leadership team for Women s Ministry of Immanuel Baptist Church is a wonderful group of servant-hearted women. They are eager to serve God, the church, and you, the women of Immanuel. APRIL MASCARO DIRECTOR OF WOMEN S MINISTRY KAMASCARO@MSN.COM (909) X

PASTORAL CARE MINISTRY Pastoral care is a big umbrella for any Church. Here at Immanuel, in general terms, it includes caring for our members, attendees, and very often those outside of our Church family in need of spiritual care. Our goal is to help and keep people connected. It includes these areas Pastoral Visitation - visiting those in the hospital, care and rehab facilities, those dealing with hospice and the dying process, or other visits in our general area, where care and pastoral help is desired or needed. Pastoral Counseling - for those needing some help with life s hard moments, encountering walking through the life stages or life issues and changes such as (pre-marital, marriage, parenting, divorce, aging, illness ). Our goal is to provide godly and biblical help, direction, and even action plans to help people to stay connected to Christ, scriptural truth, and the Church as they walk through some of life s valleys or milestones. In some cases we may provide a referral to other resources for help. Pastoral Teaching and support - done from the pulpit by our Pastors, but also through Support Groups, Wed. night Discipleship classes, and even other avenues of Biblical discipling/mentoring. Pastoral Care Help - if you would like to assist with visiting care facilities or homebound persons, or helping with a Chapel service at a retirement facility please let us know and we can provide some training and get you serving. An important thing to remember about Pastoral Care is - we don t read minds, so please feel free to call the Church office or have a family member or friend let us know if you are in the hospital or have a need for pastoral care. TRACY JOHNSON ASSOCIATE PASTOR TJOHNSON@IBCHIGHLAND.ORG (909) X

DISCIPLESHIP MINISTRY At Immanuel we believe it is important for people to connect. By this we mean connecting with Christ, Church and Community. As individuals and families faithfully attend Worship, participate in a Bible Study Community, and begin to get involved in Serving (both in the Church and through the Church to the world), we all GROW in our Christian life. To help us along this pathway the Discipleship ministry provides various avenues to strengthen and equip people, these include Wednesday night Adult Discipleship elective classes; Adult New Members class; Prayer groups; Job Encouragement; 1on1 Discipling; Be a Neighborhood Missionary Prayer movement; and some Community based ministries. TRACY JOHNSON ASSOCIATE PASTOR TJOHNSON@IBCHIGHLAND.ORG (909) X

GLOBAL OUTREACH MINISTRY Immanuel has a heart for missions. We do all that we can to go and make disciples. The focus of the Global Outreach Ministry is to share the gospel and minister to people Locally and to the Ends of the Earth. Throughout the year we host several events for our community, such as Harvest Festival, Thanksgiving Baskets, Highland Outreach and August Movie Nights. Immanuel has partnerships with many missionaries around the world. Teams are sent out to come alongside of local as well as global missionaries and ministries. It is our desire to join them in their strategies of reaching the people groups they are serving. We are both local here in our Jerusalem and reaching around the globe to the outer most parts. Please find your place to join us in sharing the Good News. We have plenty of opportunities. ED MCKEOWN MINISTER OF MISSIONS, EVANGELISM + FAMILIES EMCKEOWN@IBCHIGHLAND.ORG (909) X

WORSHIP MINISTRY The act of Worship is something that should consume our lives. It doesn t just exist in the realm of music, but permeates every aspect in the life of a believer. God never said He was only interested in the public and seemingly more exciting times of our lives i.e. Worship Services, Concerts, etc. But, instead, He is interested in the most intimate and private parts of our day to day existence. The fact is, if we are walking with Him in an effort to have constant communion with Him, then the act of worship becomes a part of everything we do, every moment of every day, all for His glory. It is your heart and my heart in right standing with our maker. The Worship Ministry at Immanuel will always strive to encourage its members and also those they minister to, to seek the Lord in all they do, offering up their entire lives daily on the altar of worship. A vibrant, healthy relationship with God is the key to walking in the Spirit. If we can get better at that every day, not only will we become better lifestyle worshipers, but we will, by God s grace and through His power, attract others who are searching and longing to do the same. MIKE MCCASSEY MINISTER OF WORSHIP MMCCASSEY@IBCHIGHLAND.ORG (909) X

Don t just GO to church, BE the church! Call us for ways to get involved: (909) AS EACH ONE HAS RECEIVED A SPECIAL GIFT, EMPLOY IT IN SERVING ONE ANOTHER AS GOOD STEWARDS OF THE MANIFOLD GRACE OF GOD. WHOEVER SPEAKS, IS TO DO SO AS ONE WHO IS SPEAKING THE UTTERANCES OF GOD; WHOEVER SERVES IS TO DO SO AS ONE WHO IS SERVING BY THE STRENGTH WHICH GOD SUPPLIES; SO THAT IN ALL THINGS GOD MAY BE GLORIFIED THROUGH JESUS CHRIST, TO WHOM BELONGS THE GLORY AND DOMINION FOREVER AND EVER.
