2 The Trumpet I hope you enjoy the following story from the book, Joan n the Whale by John Duckworth. It s titled The Call ; it gives us something to think about. There was a Sitter and a Stander. The Sitter was smiling contentedly, reading a book as he sat at a sidewalk cafe. His sunglasses, Panama hat, tropical print shirt, Bermuda shorts, and spotless white running shoes matched his mood of permanent leisure. An umbrella kept him in the shade; on the table at his elbow sat a tall glass of iced tea and a shinning white telephone. Yawning, he slowly turned a page in his well-worn book. He was about to take a sip of the iced tea when he heard a voice. Hey! cried the voice. He looked up. It was the Stander, and she was approaching him, putting her hands on her hips. Is that really you? Long time no see! Hmmm, when the Sitter, not looking up. So, what have you been doing al this time? the girl asked. The Sitter nodded toward his book, which he continued to read. Studying, of course, he said proudly. The girl scratched her head. Studying? Well I guess that s Glancing across the street, she gasped. Hey! she said, What s going on over there/ Hmmm? the Sitter murmured. An old man just fell down on the sidewalk, she said urgently. Come on, we d better go help him! She ran off, leaving the Sitter reading in the shade. Slowly he turned another page; it was his only movement. A minute later the Stander returned, panting from her mad dash. Well, she said between breaths, he s okay. She frowned. Hey, how come you didn t give me a hand? Irritated, he looked up from his book. Because I m waiting, of course, he said. Waiting for what? she asked. For the Call, he replied, nodding at the phone on the table. The Stander shook her head. What s the Just then she happened to look down a nearby alley. Look! she cried. That kid just snatched a lady s purse. Come on we can probably catch him! Off she ran again, and the Sitter just sat. Two minutes later she was back, huffing and puffing. Het, she said, What kind of neighborhood is this? People falling in the streets, kids snatching purses.... What s the matter with you? Why didn t you come with me? The Sitter lifted his head and glared. Because I didn t get the Call! What call? the girl asked, exasperated. The Call, he answered, looking skyward. The girl threw up her hands. I don t All at once she noticed something else down the street. Oh, did you see that? she asked, putting her hands to her mouth. That car just too a left and plowed into the motorcycle. Now come on! Don t just sit there; we ve got to help! The Sitter sipped his iced tea. I m sorry, he said, unconcerned. But I m just not called. The girl started to run in the direction of the accident. What are you studying, anyway? she shouted at him over her shoulder. First aid, he said placidly and returned to his reading. Three minutes later the girl was back, so exhausted she could barely stand. I ve got to use your phone, she said gasping for breath. What? the Sitter cried, suddenly alert. Page 2 I ve got to call an ambulance for that guy, she panted and reached for the shinning white telephone. The Sitter leaped from his chair, wrestling the phone from away. You can t do that! he said, his eyes panicky. Why, the Call could come at any time! I might get the Call any minute now! All at once it happened. Rrrinnnggg, when the telephone. The sound froze the Sitter and the Stander in their tracks. Time itself seemed to pause as the Sitter looked down at the phone in his arms. He swallowed. I oh my, what an honor! I ve finally received... the Call! Carefully, gingerly, he picked up the receiver. Yes? he breathed into the mouthpiece. For a moment he listened. Then he took the receiver from his ear and stared at it, anger gathering on his face. I don t believe it! he cried, thrusting the phone at the girl. It s It s for you! Grabbing his iced tea and his first-aid manual, the Sitter stalked off. The Stander chatted cheerily with the Voice on the wire, as if she had been listening to it all her life. I hope you enjoyed this story. More than that, I hope you were touched by it. Every one of us was shaped to serve God; was made for a mission, and every one of us falls into one of two categories. We are either Standers or Sitters. Which are you? Pastor Bill

3 The Trumpet Page 3 Striking a Chord By David Burckhardt Roger Byrd is the music & worship specialist in the healthy Church Group of the California Southern Baptist Convention. Roger s message to California Southern Baptists: our Worship Ministries launch was off to a rousing success in August. Our Celebration Singers journeyed down to Vacaville and participated in a Prism Music workshop with Billy Jack Green. Our thirteen who made the journey, was likely the largest group there including the home church! We enjoyed great, safe driving by Bobbie Flanders and Becky Petrie and a great dinner provided by the host church. Regretfully, we didn t enjoy having to get up early the next day, since we got home past curfew. Why am I mentioning all this? Because our Celebration Singers and other Worship Ministries groups are families. Like any small group, we care about one another and accept one another. Come join us by talking to me, or to Cheryl Trevor, our Executive Worship Specialist. Or just come on by on Wednesday and sit in! For this Fall, we ll will learn & sing some 12 anthems, journey to the Preston Correctional Center, sing for the Christmas season including our annual Christmas eve Candle Lighting service. our worship band is awesome. We have a new guitar player, Jim Jerome who is very experienced and is adding so much to our group! Roger Byrd, our California Southern Baptist Worship Specialist will lead our worship in my absence on September 12 th. Many of you know Roger and will appreciate & enjoy his leadership that day! and in August, we spent a lot of time and effort in promoting our Group ministry. Thanks to Mary Rienks for hosting our August BFG Huddle dinner. Now there are new groups and new studies. Look at the lineup elsewhere in this month s Trumpet. /djb Worship drives our Christian life. When we worship well and grow closer to God on a daily basis, not just on Sundays, it drives our ministry. It motivates us to minister to others, and when we worship well and grow closer to Christ, it energizes our evangelism. Worship certainly is the connecting point to the Lord Jesus. Without prayer and worship, we cannot function well as Christians. We can fall away from His ministry. We start doing things in our own power, which is a constant danger. Therefore, let s stay connected with Him daily. The health of our spiritual lives depends on Him. Roger s prayer requests: Pray to the Lord of the Harvest to raise up harvest hands; for churches that are struggling to discover the kinds of worship appropriate for their congregants; for churches that are struggling financially, resulting in the downsizing of their staff to volunteer, part-time or non-existent positions; that all California Southern Baptists will experience a joyful disciple s heart, tithing regularly; for generous giving to the California Mission Offering. Roger s praises: Praise God for His goodness. He alone deserves our worship; Praise HIM for keeping us healthy and serving Him; Praise HIM for the blessings He bestows on our churches in spite of all our weaknesses; Praise HIM for working in Convention life, which has resulted in an increased number of salvations and baptisms in our churches; Praise HIM for the resurgence of choirs throughout the state; Praise HIM for music ministries to children and youth. We are raising up tomorrow s music and worship leaders. You are invited to a concert given by a group of the California Singing Church Women Sunday Evening September 26, :00 pm at the Capital City Baptist Church of Elk Grove 8050 Jacinto Road, Elk Grove, CA. You are guaranteed to hear a fine performance of women, including our very own, Cheryl Trevor.

7 The Trumpet Page 7 Financial Matters August Receipts $32, th Budget Needs $36, How Do We Measure Up Financially? 4th Short $3, It takes a certain amount of dollars every week to maintain a healthy financial status. The dollars we spend are governed by our Church Budget. View our church budget at 3rd 2nd 1st Help Us FILL the Month FILL Weekly Budget Needs: $8, Monthly Budget Needs $36, In our strategy to Fill the Month we hope to educate our members on How We Are Doing. We ve written in our bulletin over the last few weeks various facts about what it takes to operate as a church. There are: Utilities, Business Accounts, Property Insurance, Workman s Comp, Payroll, Missions Contributions, and Ministry costs. On an average the church Utilities costs are about $3,101 per month. That is about $721 per week and $100 per day. There are various business accounts. These contracts include lease and maintenance agreements for business machines, office equipment, and supplies, various subscriptions, security alarm monitoring, and literature, to name a few. On an average these expenses cost about $5,000 per month, $1,162 per week and $161 per day. Payroll liabilities (includes salaries, benefits and payroll fees) average about $27,279 per month and $6,344 per week and $880 per day. The church is committed to certain ministries; such as, State & Association Missions, Lottie Moon, Annie Armstrong, World Hunger, Law Enforcement Chaplaincy, California Family Council, Ion Protestant Council, Mexico Missions, ECBC Missions, and our Community Food Closet. The church distributes about $4,400 per month, $1024 per week, and $141 per day to missions work. And there are unexpected expenses. A few weeks ago someone vandalized the church lighted sign. The two panels to be replaced cost approximately $800. We all encounter unexpected expenses such as this and when the cash flow is critical, it plays havoc with the checking account. Like many of you, the church has a lot of month left after the end of the money. These are only a few examples of what it takes to operate our church. They tally $9,251 per week. This month we took in an average of $7,517 per week. August Receipts Monthly Receipts $32, Budget Needs $36, Shortfall $ 3, The Church is a Community of Believers and it takes a community to keep our Church Financially Healthy.
