Stanford Memorial Church University Public Worship 4 June :00 a.m. Multifaith Service OPENING VOLUNTARY Veni, Creator en Taille à 5 Nicolas de Grigny ( ) WELCOME Please stand. The Rev. Professor Jane Shaw Dean for Religious Life HYMN Let Light and Truth Suffuse the Mind p. 7 OPENING WORDS Responses of the people are in bold. This is the day that God has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it. PRAYER OF THE DAY May God be with you. And also with you. Let us pray: Breathe in us O Holy Spirit that our thoughts may be holy; Act in us O Holy Spirit that our works, too, may be holy; Draw our hearts to you, O Holy Spirit, that we love but what is holy; Strengthen us O Holy Spirit to defend that which is holy; Guard us then O Holy Spirit that we may learn your holy ways. Amen. Adapted from St. Augustine of Hippo,

Please be seated. INTRODUCTORY REMARKS Rabbi Patricia Karlin Neumann Senior Associate Dean for Religious Life LITANY Yvan Quinn 17 Julia Sakowitz 19 Hannah Broderick 19 Miguel Samano 19 Callan Showers 19 In the spirit of Religious Encounter, we strive to go...yes, I ll go!...break down the walls we put up in our lives from fear, pain, and hopelessness. Yes, I ll go!...build up people to be better than we are. Yes, I ll go!...lose our self-righteousness and desire to be right, to dive into immersive experiences and have the courage to change our beliefs. Yes, I ll go!...find God inside everyone, inside every moment, inside ourselves. Yes, I ll go!...rediscover a child-like curiosity that allows us to learn from people who come from traditions different and opposed to our own. Yes, I ll go!...grow into mature leaders who will infuse the world with a culture of respectful, open, and inspiring encounters. Yes, I ll go! 2

READINGS Poems from Rabindranath Tagore s, Gitanjali. 35 Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high; Where knowledge is free; Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls; Where words come out from the depth of truth; Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection; Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit; Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake. 36 This is my prayer to thee, my lord strike, strike at the root of penury in my heart. Give me the strength lightly to bear my joys and sorrows. Give me the strength to make my love fruitful in service. Give me the strength never to disown the poor or bend my knees before insolent might. Give me the strength to raise my mind high above daily trifles. And give me the strength to surrender my strength to thy will with love. 69 The same stream of life that runs through my veins night and day runs through the world and dances in rhythmic measures. It is the same life that shoots in joy through the dust of the earth in numberless blades of grass and breaks into tumultuous waves of leaves and flowers. It is the same life that is rocked in the ocean-cradle of birth and of death, in ebb and in flow. I feel my limbs are made glorious by the touch of this world of life. And my pride is from the life-throb of ages dancing in my blood this moment. 5

A poem from William Stafford s The Way It Is, There s a thread you follow. It goes among things that change. But it doesn t change. People wonder about what you are pursuing. You have to explain about the thread. But it is hard for others to see. While you hold it you can t get lost. Tragedies happen; people get hurt or die; and you suffer and get old. Nothing you do can stop time s unfolding. You don t ever let go of the thread. The Eternal Idea, a poem by Jalāl ad-dīn Muhammad Rūmī. Translated by Andrew Harvey in A Year of Rumi. You may seem to be the microcosm; In fact, you are the macrocosm. The branch might seem like the fruit s origin: In fact, the branch exists because of the fruit. Would the gardener have planted the tree at all Without a desire and hope for fruit? That s why the tree is really born from the fruit Even if it seems the fruit is created by the tree. 6

Let Light and Truth Suffuse the Mind Let light and truth suffuse the mind and spread throughout the shadowed heart as what we know is redefined through science, scholarship and art. Our founders knew that faith requires the discipline of sturdy thought. They trusted that the spirit s fires burn brightest where the truth is sought. We ve learned the wisest prayer they prayed was that more light would guide their ways for we, like them, have been remade by unexpected, slanted rays. So let the gift of gathered light pervade the ways we learn and know, awaking wonder and delight while knowledge, truth and wisdom grow. Text: Thomas Troeger Tune: Old Hundredth All rights reserved. 10 One Human Heart Can Hold 1. One human heart can hold A world too vast to chart. For time and space cannot enfold the reaches of the heart that span our hopes and tears, the breadth and depth and height that separate our faith and fears, the shadows and the light. 2. God, your heart alone can plumb and measure ours. The whole expanse is grasped and known by your discerning powers. You touch the wounds and scars where violence leaves its mark. You see our hopes as bright as stars that shine against the dark. 3. Although we cannot know As we are known by you, the visions of our hearts can grow to see all hearts anew. We dream how each appears in your unbounded sight: a universe of joys and tears, of sorrow and delight. 4. And through our dream we see the life that you intend: to honor the complexity of stranger, foe and friend, to welcome every heart and help each heart recall through worship, music, service, art your heart embraces all.
