Stanford Memorial Church University Public Worship 30 April :00 a.m. Admit Weekend OPENING VOLUNTARY Christ ist erstanden Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 627i) ( ) WELCOME The Rev. Joanne Sanders Please stand. HYMN Praise the Source of Faith & Learning p. 9 OPENING WORDS Responses of the people are in bold. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD Blessed be God: Eternal Majesty, Incarnate Word and Abiding Spirit. And blessed be God s reign, now and forever. Amen. PRAYER OF THE DAY May God be with you. And also with you. Let us pray: Elusive God, companion on the way, you walk behind, beside, beyond; you catch us unaware. Break through the disillusionment and despair clouding our vision, that, with wide-eyed wonder, we may find our way and journey on as messengers of your good news. Amen.

HYMN Draw Us in the Spirit s Tether p. 11 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. THE HOLY COMMUNION It is indeed right and good, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks and praise, almighty God, and in these days of Easter to celebrate with joyful hearts the memory of your wonderful works. For by the mystery of his passion, Jesus Christ, your risen Son, has conquered the powers of death, restored in men and women the image of your glory, and opened to them the gate of life eternal. And so, in the joy of this new life, earth and heaven resound with gladness, while angels and archangels and the powers of all creation sing forever the hymn of your glory. 3

Please be seated. Loving God, you never forget us or turn away from us, even when we fail you. You sent your Son Jesus who gave his life for us. He healed those who were sick, cared for those who were poor, and cried with those who mourned. He forgave sinners and taught us to forgive. For all your love we give you thanks in the way that Jesus showed us. On the night before he died, while he was having supper with his friends, he took bread and offered you thanks. He broke the bread, and gave it to them, saying: "Take, eat; this is my Body, broken for you; Do this in remembrance of me." After supper, he took the cup, he offered you thanks, and gave it to them saying: "Drink this, all of you. This is my Blood of the new covenant, poured out for you, and for all, that sins may be forgiven. Do this in remembrance of me." 5
Gracious God we offer you these gifts and the hearts of your people joined in praise and thanksgiving in the name of Jesus Christ. Send your Holy Spirit on us and on this bread and this wine, that they may be the Body and Blood of Christ, and that, sharing your life, we may travel in your company to our journey's end. With all your people we give you thanks and praise through the Son and in the Spirit, now and forever. Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER As Christ has taught us, so we are bold to pray: Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 6
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, because we all share in one bread. The gifts of God for the people of God. FRACTION ANTHEM Whoever Eats This Bread (Choir only) DISTRIBUTION All are welcome at God s holy table, to receive the bread and wine in this church. Hold out your hands to receive the bread to eat. Please dip the bread in the cup of wine. The following words will be used when you are given the bread and wine, The body of Christ, the bread of Heaven. and The blood of Christ, the cup of Salvation to which the response, each time, is Amen. If you would prefer simply to receive a blessing then please come forward to the communion assistants, and simply cross your arms across your chest. Gluten free wafers are available. Please request one when you come forward for Communion. AGNUS DEI Missa Brevis Gabrieli PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Loving God through the raising of your Son from the grave, you broke the power of death and condemned death itself to die. As we celebrate this triumph, so may we make it our model for living. Resurrect in our lives faith, hope and love, as surely as you raised Jesus from the grave. Amen. 7
ANNOUNCEMENTS Please stand. HYMN All My Hope in God is Founded p. 12 BENEDICTION You are invited to be seated after preacher has departed to enjoy the closing voluntary. CLOSING VOLUNTARY Christ ist erstanden Bach (BWV 627ii & 627iii) 8
Praise the Source of Faith and Learning Praise the Source of faith and learning that has sparked and stoked the mind with a passion for discerning how the world has been designed. Let the sense of wonder flowing from the wonders we survey keep our faith forever growing and renew our need to pray. God of wisdom, we acknowledge that our science and our art and the breadth of human knowledge only partial truth impart. Far beyond our calculation lies a depth we cannot sound where your purpose for creation and the pulse of life are found. May our faith redeem the blunder of believing that our thought has displaced the grounds for wonder which the ancient prophets taught. May our learning curb the error which unthinking faith can breed lest we justify some terror with an antiquated creed. As two currents in a river fight each other s undertow till converging they deliver one coherent steady flow. Blend O God our faith and learning till they carve a single course till they join as one, returning praise and thanks to you, their Source. Text: Troeger Tune: Abbot s Leigh All rights reserved. 10 O God of all the years of life O God of all the years of life, From birth to death, through youth to age, We praise you for the gift of love, Our dearest, priceless heritage. Through days of childhood energy, Through youth s enthusiastic schemes, Through all our slow maturity Lift up our hopes to meet your dreams. May church and people heed the call To follow where the Savior leads, To teach and heal, to speak in love, Our faith empowering all our deeds. In Christ, our risen, living Lord, We see the triumph of your grace. May we respond with joyful hearts To serve you in this time and place. Tune: Old Hundreth All rights reserved.
