3 From the Offices of Faith Development, Liturgy & Youth Faith Development To contact us: Ellen , ext Trevor , ext 1260 Deb , ext 1262 Confirmation candidates: from various parishes of the English Deanery will meet with Archbishop Valéry Vienneau and the other young people who are preparing for Confirmation at Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral on Sunday, January 20 th, Candidates need to arrive between 1:30 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. for registration. The afternoon will conclude approximately 4:30 p.m. Medically Assisted Death and Challenges to a Good Death: Please mark your calendars for Sunday, March 10 th and join Dr. Nuala Kenny, a medical doctor, medical ethicist, Professor Emeritus of Dalhousie University, past Ethics and Health Policy Advisor for the Catholic Health Alliance of Canada and a Sister of Charity for Medically Assisted Death and Challenges to a Good Death. Dr. Kenny is the author of Rediscovering the Art of Dying: How Jesus Experience and Our Stories Reveal a New Vision of Compassionate Care, which addresses the ultimate medicalization of human suffering presented by medically assisted death, for which she was awarded the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada 2018 First Prize for Pastoral Ministry. Dr. Kenny will be in the diocese for 2 days. On Sunday, March 10 th she will look at the impact of legislation around Medical Assistance in Dying through 4 sessions: Medically Assisted Death & Challenges to A Good Death Values, Beliefs and Bioethics in Health Care Decisions Responding to Interest in MAiD Challenges to Being a Community of Mercy This workshop will take place at St. Bernard s Church Hall, Botsford Street, 2:- 8:30 PM. The Challenge of Healing Together from Clergy Sexual Abuse Monday, March 11 th, join Sr. Nuala Kenny, for The Challenge of Healing together from Clergy Sexual Abuse. Sr. Nuala is the author of Healing the Church and is presently writing a second book on the topic of clergy sexual abuse. She serves as Advisor to the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops Ad Hoc Committee for the Protection of Minors and Chair of the Archdiocese of Halifax Yarmouth Ministry of Care and Companionship Committee. This session will take place at the Dan Bohan Family Centre, Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Riverview - 7:- 9PM. Please register with Ellen. 4 OBERAMMERGAU, GERMANY, POLAND & CZECH REPUBLIC This pilgrimage is set for September 2020, but bookings for the worldfamous passion play in Oberammergau, Germany are quickly being filled. Apart from the district of Bavaria, Germany, our trip takes us to Poland s two largest cities, Warsaw and Krakow. While in Poland we will also visit the monastery of St. Maximilian Kolbe, the priest who volunteered to die in place of a stranger in Auschwitz. We will be visiting the world s oldest operating salt mine in Wielickza, Poland as well as many other historic sites. Our trip also takes us to three remarkable cities in the Czech Republic including its beautiful capital, Prague. Plan to join travel consultant, Liliana Trail ( ) and Fr. Phil Mulligan ( ) at an information session on Sunday, January 20 th at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church at 2 p.m. If you are already committed to going but missed the session, come anyway, and see some wonderful pictures. Heartfelt thanks to each and every one for their generous support to the Parish. Ordinary Time: During Ordinary Time, the church celebrates the fullness of the mystery of the Lord Jesus. The people of God offer praise by celebrating the Paschal Mystery of the death and resurrection of Jesus. On the first day of the week, the Lord's Day, God assembles the beloved people to hear the Word, to reflect upon it, to offer the living sacrifice of praise, and to eat and drink the banquet of the Lord. Then God sends them forth to proclaim this love by their words and actions. Sunday is the original Christian Feast Day, following the tradition handed down from apostolic times, for this was the day of the Lord's resurrection. Today's Christian communities continue this tradition by celebrating every Sunday as the day of the risen Lord.

6 World Day of Migrants and Refugees - January 20, 2019 A World Day of Migrants and Refugees is observed in many places in solidarity with the World Refugee Day promoted by the United Nations and observed since 2001 on 20 June. This January observance was instituted by Saint Pius X in "The phenomenon of migration today is a providential opportunity for the proclamations of the Gospel in the contemporary world. Men and women from various regions of the earth who have not yet encountered Jesus Christ or know him only partially, ask to be received in countries with an ancient Christian tradition. It is necessary to find adequate ways for them to meet and to become acquainted with Jesus Christ and experience the invaluable gift of salvation." (Pope Benedict XVI, 2012) Rite of Enrollment for Confirmation The confirmation candidates will make their official commitment to enter into preparations for the sacrament of Confirmation at the 11 AM Mass on Sunday, January 20, May we as a parish keep them all in prayer during their journey. The annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will be celebrated 18 to 25 January 2019 on the theme "Justice and only justice you shall pursue." (Deuteronomy 16:18-20). This universal week of prayer encourages Christians of all denominations to meet, to participate in various liturgical and other community activities, and to pray together that all may one, as Christ desires.
