1 He Descended Into Hell It has already been five years (1 st Sunday of Advent 2011) that we, in the English-speaking parishes in Canada, have been using the new Roman Missal. One of the stumbling points, that still troubles some people, is the line in the Apostles Creed that say: he descended into hell. At the risk of muddying the waters, I offer a few thoughts. Firstly, hell in the context of the Apostles Creed should not be thought of as a place of punishment. Why would Jesus have to be punished? some of you have asked. It makes no sense. So let s rule that one out. Let s also not get caught up in the geography of heaven and hell. St. Pope John Paul II affirmed that heaven and hell are not primarily physical places. The next line in the Apostles Creed may help us; it says: on the third day he rose again from the dead. I assume the place Jesus descended to and the place he rose from are the same place, that is, hell is equivalent to the dead. It is interesting that in the Nicene Creed there is no mention of Jesus descending into hell only that he suffered death and was buried. The point in either creed is that Jesus death, like the death of every human being, was real and complete. Scripture tells us very little about Jesus state between his death and resurrection. It s not easy squaring the idea that Jesus spent the better part of three days in the land of the dead before his resurrection with his last word to the good thief: Today, you will be with me in Paradise. Without having anyone come back from heaven, hell or purgatory to give us a first-hand account, we can only surmise, with faith, what life on the other side is all about. Standing on this side, we know two things for certain. Firstly, how we treat others in this life has implications for the afterlife. I was hungry and you gave me to eat, then enter my kingdom. Secondly, we know God is merciful, or as Pope Francis say, God s name is mercy. I m secretly glad that Jesus did enter hell. If hell is the worst state we can imagine, then it gives me great solace that God s Word of peace, love, mercy and forgiveness should go even there. If hell is a place of no hope, it gives me comfort that Jesus brings hope to the hopeless. There seems to be as much evidence of hell here on earth as there is on the other side. Hell may be the loveless marriage you have been languishing in from Day 1. Hell may be growing up in a war-torn country never knowing a childhood without bombs, famine, or the stench of death. Hell may be the inescapable mental disorders many suffer from daily. Hell may be personal loneliness, depression or never knowing an ounce of tenderness or affection. Hell may be what child soldiers or sex slaves live each day. If that s the case, I m now beginning to understand why Jesus needed to descend into hell it was a choice made out of love. While he walked this earth, Jesus love and mercy knew no restrictions and saw no human situation as off limits/do not enter. If such was his life on earth, would he not also seek out the lost in death? Fr.
