W e give thanks to you, O God, we give thanks! For Your wondrous works declare that Your name is near. Psalm 75:1 Did you know that thankfulness can actually improve your life? We spend one day a year giving thanks, but we have reason to be thankful every single day. We tend to dwell on the bad things in our life and forget about the things we should be thankful for. The good things go unnoticed and slip away. God wants us to develop an attitude of gratitude and make gratefulness a habit in our life. To help develop this habit, begin by keeping a gratitude journal. Don t write down anything negative; only positive things. Think of good things that happened because something bad happened first. For instance: A slow driver pulls out in front of you and prevents you from getting a speeding ticket. And don t focus on what you don t have, focus on what you do have...a warm place to sleep, food to eat, clothes to wear. God has given us so much to be thankful for. We can even be thankful for those difficult people we know that make life hard for us. Even the negative forces in our lives can be hidden blessings, worthy of thankfulness. Hard times make good times sweeter. Obstacles and challenges make us strong. Be thankful for the opportunities to lean on the Lord and grow closer to Him. But most of all, we should be thankful to God for allowing us to serve Him by loving our husbands, holding a sweet baby, teaching a child, encouraging the broken hearted, praying for the sick. True gratitude leads to action. When we are truly thankful to God for all the things He has blessed us with, we can serve Him with a happy heart! Coleen Catalano Our Mission The women s ministry of Kelview Heights Baptist Church seeks to encourage women in spiritual growth, discipleship, enrichment, ministry and evangelism. This goal will be accomplished by providing resources, training, enrichment events and a supporting network. Get involved and make a difference in the lives of women and children!

2 THE BEAUTIFUL WIFE She (the wife) comforts, encourages, and does him only good as long as there is life with her. Proverbs 31:12 DATE TIME How long has it been since you and your husband have been on a date? I mean a real date that you planned, dressed for and anticipated? Life gets busy, and it becomes so easy to forget to set time aside to be alone with just your man. We need to remember to make sure we keep our priorities straight: God first, husband second, THEN kids, extended family, house, job, hobbies, friends, and so on. So make time TODAY to get away, alone with your husband, even if it s only for a few hours. You won t be sorry! Susan Lilly An attitude of gratitude spreads like ripples from a tossed pebble, benefitting all that it touches. WHAT S COOKIN? Cinnamon Apple Cheesecake Crust: Makes 12 servings 1/2 cup butter, softened 1/4 cup packed brown sugar 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup quick-cooking oats 1/4 cup finely chopped walnuts 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon Filling: 2 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened 1 can (14 ounce) sweetened condensed milk 1/2 cup thawed apple juice concentrate 3 eggs, lightly beaten Topping: Directions: 2 medium tart apples, peeled and sliced 1 Tablespoon butter 1 teaspoon cornstarch 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 cup thawed apple juice concentrate 1. In a small bowl, cream butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Gradually add flour, oats, walnuts and cinnamon until well blended. Press onto the bottom and 1-1/2 inch up the sides of a greased 9-inch spring form pan. Place on baking sheet. Bake at 325º for 10 minutes or until set. Cool on a wire rack. 2. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese until fluffy. Beat in milk and apple juice concentrate until smooth. Add eggs; beat on low speed just until combined (batter will be thin). Pour into crust. Return pan to baking sheet. 3. Back at 325º for minutes or until center is almost set. Cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Carefully run a knife around the edge of pan to loosen. Cool one hour longer. Refrigerate overnight. 4. In a large skillet, cook and stir apples in butter over medium heat until crisp tender, about 5 minutes. Cool to room temperature. Arrange over cheesecake. 5. In a small saucepan, combine the cornstarch, cinnamon and juice concentrate until smooth. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cool and stir for 1 minute or until thickened. Immediately brush over apples. Refrigerate for 1 hour or until chilled. Refrigerate leftovers. Heart Talk Page 2

3 Soup and Salad Supper HIGHLIGHTS By Susan Lilly The Kelview Heights Baptist Church Ladies Ministry did it again! The Soup and Salad Supper on October 21 was a tremendous blessing to everyone who attended. As the ladies entered the church, they were greeted by a team of sweet, smiling faces. The fall decorations created by Katie Robinson were absolutely breathtaking, and all of the door prizes were displayed for everyone to see and anticipate winning. As they entered the choir room, they were yet again greeted by beautiful autumn decorations that made the room feel immediately warm. The ladies were teeming with conversation, visiting with friends, meeting mothers and younger daughters, meeting new people, and getting to know acquaintances a little better. Marleah Reed opened with prayer, then everyone rushed to get succulent soups and salads and dreamy desserts. There were so many soups to choose from, ranging from Cream of Asparagus to Chicken Noodle to Taco Soup. There were many wonderful salads to choose from as well - all those recipes you always want to try - well, they were there, and oh, so good! Music was provided by our very own Ladies Trio. Coleen, Teresa and Marisa did such a great job praising the Lord through song. Lisa Franklin announced the winners of all the coveted door prizes. There were prizes for the teens as well. Katherine Whiteman announced the winners of those. Squeals of delight were heard all over the room as the winners of the crockpots, recipe books, aprons and teen bags were announced. Lisa Franklin also introduced our new staff wives - Lauren Hobbs, Mindy Frizzell, and Lisa Bosquez - to the group, and encouraged us to pray for and welcome these sweet ladies. The guest speaker for the evening was our very own Beverly Dillow. Her message came from Romans 12:6-8, which teaches about the different spiritual gifts that we are uniquely given when we come to know Christ. She explained all of the gifts, and even played a fun game with us to show how all the gifts work together to complete the body of Christ. She encouraged us to know what our own spiritual gift is so we can serve the church in the place that is handpicked by our Savior. Our ultimate purpose in life is to be like Christ and glorify Him, so we need to work with our natural tendencies and talents that God gave so we can really shine for Him. All-in-all, the evening portrayed her message perfectly, as the ladies of our church - the body of Christ - came together and hosted a Fabulous Fall Soup and Salad Supper. Pictures of the Soup and Salad Supper are posted on our women s ministry website. Heart Talk Page 3

4 Grandma s Back Porch For he will not often consider the years of his life, because God keeps him occupied with the gladness of his heart. Ecclesiastes 5: 20 NASB Family traditions provide time and space for you to be together as a family; to affirm family values, strengthen family ties, and enjoy each other s company. When you make the time to spend together as a family, your children get a sense of belonging and a sense of family unity. It also helps children with their identity. Because family traditions strengthen families in good times and in bad times, they can help with the bumps on the road of adolescence. In today s hectic world, family traditions are becoming hard to cultivate. The family is running in all different directions much of the time. But it is important to establish them. They don t need to cost money or be elaborate. Saying goodbye with a kiss and a hug when you walk out the door in the mornings or tucking your child into bed with a story and a prayer every night or eating dinner together at the table every night and discussing your events of the day are good places to start. Family traditions need to be fun and need to repeat themselves on a set schedule. When an event repeats itself, children begin anticipating it. They will participate and then reflect on the memories. When I was growing up, our family all gathered together at my grandparents house for Thanksgiving. It was always fun to spend time with our cousins. We all have fond memories of those times together. We ve established a few traditions with our grandchildren. We have holiday parties at Grandma s house for the grandkids from Valentines Day to Christmas. They love it and look forward to the parties with their cousins. Every year at Christmas time, we get all the grandkids matching pajamas, load up the cars and head to Lubbock for Polar Express. Last year, now that they are getting a little bit older, we got costumes for them and, as Grandpa read the Christmas story, they acted out the Nativity story. We make Christmas cookies, pretty much destroying the kitchen with flour and icing everywhere including all over their little faces. When they get a little bit older, I plan on having tea parties with the granddaughters for Christmas and other times during the year. So be creative and plan some fun family traditions and let the memories begin. Your family will be stronger for it. Until next time Coleen Catalano Class for Women The Two Sides of the Cross Taught by Kristi Morgan Room 139 Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. Check it out at Merry Christmas, Eve. Heart Talk Page 4

Lasting change is possible and it s time to get started. Life Interrupted By: Priscilla Shirer Interruptions. They re aggravating. Sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tells us more about ourselves. The prophet Jonah s existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. And it scared him enough to make him run in the opposite direction. Yet, what seemed to be an unnecessary and useless interruption was really an opportunity for Jonah to be involved in something the likes of which the Old Testament world had never seen before. This interruption was really a divine intervention and it held more adventure and possibility than he could have ever imagined. We, like Jonah, tend to run from interruptions. When major pains and minor problems cause a hiccup in our carefully calculated plans and goals, we head in the opposite direction. Who knows what we might be missing by running from what could very well be God s means of steering us towards the most magnificent outcome of our lives and discovering the amazing freedom and fulfillment that comes from going with God even when He s going against your grain. My Heart Yearns for You, God Psalm 63:1 Heart hunger is often misinterpreted as any number of things, such as a craving for food, the drive to succeed, a yearning for intimacy and companionship, or in search for significance. In and of themselves these needs are legitimate, and God promises to meet them. But when you feel a heart hunger for God, and think you need food or success, the result is dissatisfaction, loneliness, and emptiness. Only God can fill this longing of the heart. God created us for fellowship, and since we are created in His image, we likewise have the longing for companionship with Him. It doesn t work to try to fit a square peg into a round hole, so make sure your God-shaped hole gets filled with God not some inferior substitution. Ask Him to satisfy your heart hunger. He would be delighted to, and your heart will be enriched. Excerpt from Breath Prayers Heart Talk Page 6

7 Heart Talk with Beverly Eyelashes and Contentment "Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have..." Hebrews 13:5a Being content with eyelashes has never occurred to me until recently. I was hearing so much about eyelash extension it made me curious. I began noticing ladies with long full gorgeous eyelashes. I ve always had decent eyelashes, I ve never complained about them. They never bothered me with being too thin or short. The fashion magazines always show models with extra long eyelashes. I was beginning to think how fun that would be to have extra long eyelashes, plus I justified the expense with not having to buy mascara or eye makeup remover. Not to mention, no more mascara smudges under my eyes. So the eyelash bug got me.i made my appointment for eyelash extensions. I was excited, never will I have to bother with mascara anymore and my lashes will look as good as the ones in the magazines. What could be better? My appointment finally arrived after a few weeks due to the fact that she is booked months ahead because so many ladies are getting extensions. The first question she asked me was Are you an eyelash puller? No, I ve never pulled on my eyelashes I replied. So for two hours, the extensions were applied. I LOVED them.. They were so long that when the wind blew, I could actually see my eyelashes blowing in the breeze. Who knew? A couple of weeks down the road, I was watching an intense documentary with my husband and son about some men that built a raft to travel the high seas and were attacked by sharks. I don t do very well with movies like that. By the end of the movie, I didn t have any eyelashes left. Yes, you read correctly, I had been pulling on my eyelashes throughout the movie and I quickly found out that when you pull an eyelash extension out, you pull your real eyelashes out. So all that to say, My name is Beverly Dillow and I m an eyelash puller. Now, as I sit here waiting patiently for my eyelashes to grow, I thought, Why wasn t I content with the eye lashes I had? Nothing was wrong with my eyelashes, I just wanted something better. Okay, maybe I coveted long full dark eyelashes. I was consumed with the thought of better lashes, that I justified every reason to not go for it. I m all for taking care of ourselves and being the best we can be in order to glorify the Lord, but I sure wish I would have been content with the eyelashes that God gave me. I ve always taken to heart the verses that deal with contentment and I have worked hard at being content in the seasons of my life and also being very careful not to covet the blessings of others and miss the blessings God has for me. Little did I know eyelashes would be a huge lesson of the century. As I wait for my eyelashes to grow and try very hard to be patient and not run down and get some more, I will be on guard and keep my heart in check for those other things in life that sneak up on me, whispering, if you had so and so, your life would be so much more fun!
