2 From Our Intentional Interim Walking a New Way in Lent Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart to revere your name. Psalm 86:11 God invites you to walk a new way in Lent. The way of someone on a journey in the wilderness. The way of someone whose heart desires to fully respect and honor God s way in this world. God invites you to welcome and appreciate those around you. To recognize those who pass you by. To reach out to those whom you encounter each day. Lent is more than a personal pilgrimage. It is a communal experience; We were not created to be isolated or alone. We are created to live and work and worship in community. When we gather for worship, we come from varied experiences and backgrounds and cultures. Some of us have years of experience at First Lutheran. Some of us are brand new. And some are new worshippers longing to find Jesus and a loving community. I prefer to call newcomers new worshippers vs. visitors. It reminds us we are one in Christ. So here are 5 helpful tips: God invites us to walk a new way in Lent. This is a walk out of our comfort zone. It is a journey of sharing the love of Christ. Just a few steps, or a turning around to greet someone near you. 1. What do I say to someone who looks like they are new? It s so great to see you today! I m so glad you re here. My name is. and I live in Portland or wherever you live. You could also say Would you like to meet the Pastor? and bring them to the pastor. Or, especially in the fellowship hall, introduce them to someone you know. 2. What if I am not sure if they are new or from another service? I usually say: Have we met before? And the other person usually says yes, I talked with you last week. Or no, this is my first time here. Or, I usually go to another service. You can take the conversation from there. 2

3 3. When do I do this? In the parking lot. In the entrance ways. In the hallway. In the bathroom. In the sanctuary before church, during the peace, and after church. In fellowship hall. In the kitchen. In short, any place you see someone you don t know, speak to them! Don t worry if you make a gaff. Be kind, be friendly, think about how you would like to be welcomed. 4. I m too shy, busy, or it s not my gift. God will give you the strength to say hi and greet someone new. You can also pair up with someone else and welcome someone together. What s most important is your sincerity and desire to greet someone with kindness. It will go a long way to show someone they are not alone. 5. Hospitality? Is that Biblical? You shall also love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. Deuteronomy 10:19 And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39 And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you? 40 And the king will answer them, Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to me. Matthew 25:37-40 Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. Romans 12:13 Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. Romans 15:7 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Hebrews 13:2 God invites us to walk a new way in Lent. 4 Our Community Involvement Thank you! Despite a Patriot loss, we had an outstanding response to our soup collection for Super Bowl Sunday. 190 cans of soup were delivered to Project FEED. Thank you to all who dropped off soup to feed the hungry. Also, thank you to the children in the 4 and 5 year-old classroom in the Children s Program who counted all the cans with help from their teachers. Thank you to Joy Carr, Celeste Heber, Colleen Taylor, Marlene Christensen, Sherry Grandonico, Kathy Sensecqua, and Wendy Carey for making 23 beautiful Valentine bouquets. They were really lovely. Thank you to all who delivered the bouquets to those who needed a bit of cheer. You can drop in or stay all day -- whatever works for your schedule. WHY: We are getting together to put together quilts. You don t have to know how to sew. 5 Youth & Family Ministry News We've had a great year so far! If you haven't already viewed the wonderful video of the Christmas Pageant put together by Creative Studios pro-bono for us, you definitely should! You can view it by going to: / In the New Year, Sunday School students have been focusing once again on the Living Water and how it can transform us. We're currently in the midst of looking at Psalm 23. Any students who come to church with this Psalm memorized will earn a prize! Confirmation students have started reading the Bible in 90 days and are 1/ 3 of the way through it already! There are going to be ongoing fundraisers for camperships throughout the next couple of months. In March, we're going to be doing another guessing game -- guess how many jellybeans are in the jar. The cost will be $1 per guess. In April, we will be selling raffle calendars again for $10 per calendar. These help provide the opportunity for our youth to attend either Camp Calumet or FLC Summer Camp. There will be a chili supper on Maundy Thursday at 6pm to celebrate those receiving their First Communion that evening. All are welcome to attend. If you would like to help by bringing a chili or soup, please let Kailina know as soon as possible. Looking Ahead: The next Family Fun Day will be on Sunday, April 8th from Noon to 2pm. We will be roller skating at Happy Wheels. The cost is $8.50 per person. kailina.mills@flcme.org AED Training Our new Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) has been installed in the hallway near the mailboxes. There will be a training session on Sunday, March 18, after the 9:15 and 10:30 services in the Hospitality Room. A nurse-instructor will be on hand to train those that are interested in how to use the AED. The more folks that are trained, the better prepared we will be in an emergency. The training is appropriate for adults or youth age 14 years or older. If you would like to be trained, please plan on attending. For more information, please contact any council member. 5

6 Call Committee Update In January, after our latest candidate chose not to pursue a call to First Lutheran Church, I had a good discussion with Bishop Hazelwood and Pastor Tim Roser. Bishop Hazelwood followed up with a letter to me as the president of the Church Council. In his letter, the Bishop informed me that First Lutheran has now been without a pastor longer than any other church in his tenure and with 8 candidates reviewed (4 we decided weren t the right fit and 4 decided they weren t the right fit), we had seen more candidates than any other church in his tenure. We agreed that the process may be broken. We also agreed that there was shared responsibility between the Synod and First Lutheran as well as a shortage of good candidates for many openings. So, the Church Council, at the retreat at Camp Calumet at the end of January, decided to elect an entirely new Call Committee and start the process from a fresh perspective. The new Call Committee is: Debi Curry - Chair Barb Daggett Julie Mueller Karen Johnson Doug Dressel Bill Mills Paul Loven The Council and the Synod firmly believe that we are still a very attractive opportunity for a new pastor. We believe that God has a pastor in His plan for First Lutheran and they will be revealed in His time. Please pray for the new Committee as they continue the search for our new pastor. I am cold in love; warm me and make me fervent, that my love may go out to my neighbor. I do not have a strong and firm faith; at times I doubt and am unable to trust you altogether. O Lord, help me. With me, there is an abundance of sin; in you is the fullness of righteousness. Therefore I will remain with you, of whom I can receive, but to whom I may not give. 7 Council Update The Council had a wonderful retreat at Camp Calumet and stayed in the Staff House down by the water. We had nearly perfect attendance and started Friday night with a Bible session followed by a great worship around a cross of lights led by Pastor Anne. We enjoyed the beautiful serenity of Calumet during the winter while we participated in four study and learning sessions during the day on Saturday, led by Ken Conant, Pastor Tim Roser, Ed Daggett and Steve Barmore. Our sessions focused on our journey at First with an emphasis on hospitality. We look forward to March as we kick off our capital campaign for the sanctuary renovation, along with further developments with the call process. The Council highly recommends attending the mid-week Lenten services on Wednesday evenings at First. We are the host church this year for the area Lutheran churches and this makes a wonderful way to meet other Lutherans in our area. Join us for some great soup, fellowship and thought provoking Lenten services. Our budget had expected a loss of $9,572 (January is a month with several large expenses). So this loss is not cause for a big concern. The Bridging the Gap campaign has concluded and the final budget has been published. We received 24 increased or new gifts which boosted our budgeted revenue by $21,408. After council approved adjustments to our salary expenses and contributions to the Synod, the final approved budget is a deficit of $8,743; significantly less than our initial projected budget deficit of $64,922. 8 Capital Campaign God s power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine. --Ephesians 3:20 Work is beginning on the Capital Campaign for the Sanctuary renovation project here at First Lutheran. The theme of our campaign is Imagine!, and the verse above is the scripture passage that will lead us through this campaign. The Steering Team has met twice with our consultant, Pastor Renee LiaBraaten, and the team coordinators met with Pastor Renee in mid-february. When it rains, it pours and we re not talking about April showers, though those are coming soon! We re excited about two outstanding Give a Child a Chance fundraising events coming in March. FAIR TRADE ITEMS FOR SALE First off, we will be selling Fair Trade coffee, chocolate bars, hot cocoa mix, and fruit and nut bars offered by the Equal Exchange Company. Check out the products on the first two Sundays of the month at our Scrip table. Purchasing these yummy products helps support farmers around the world while giving a child a chance right here in our community. It is a win-win opportunity! WOODEN SIGN-MAKING PARTY Our second exciting and fun-filled event is the chance to create custom wooden signs for your home, camp, office or to give to family, friends, new home-owners, newlyweds or for any of a hundred of other reasons. We're holding this right here at church on Saturday, March 17th. Look for our ad elsewhere in the newsletter. 10 Luther & Maundy Thursday For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, Take, eat; this is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me. In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord s death till He comes. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 On Maundy Thursday, we remember the Last Supper and celebrate one of the two sacraments that Lutherans observe Holy Communion, also called the Eucharist. The word maundy comes from the Latin mandatum, or command. Not only do we remember the bread and the wine, we remember the commandment that Jesus gave to the disciples, A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another. Jesus demonstrated that love by washing the feet of his disciples. Washing the feet of someone would be a task that only the lowest of the servants would be asked to do. And here was the Son of God doing just that. Martin Luther, in a sermon he wrote for Maundy Thursday, preached on the Lord s Supper. Here is what Luther teaches about the sacrament and its importance: This Sacrament was in no wise instituted or introduced by men, but by Christ Himself. In the night in which He was betrayed He instituted it for His disciples, yea for all Christians, that it might be unto them His Testament, His parting gift, full of great comfort and blessing. We Christians should therefore cherish this Testament as a treasure of the highest value, should love it dearly, and should make use of it cheerfully and frequently, deriving from it much joy and consolation, thus fulfilling the will of our dying Lord and Saviour. His command in this regard is plain; He enjoins upon us the use of this Sacrament. True Christians will never disregard this command, but will readily and often find comfort in its fulfillment, even until that day when the Lord, who Himself gave us such a Testament, shall again come from heaven to judge the quick and the dead. Tell me, is it not an exceedingly cheering word, when the Lord tells His disciples so graciously and kindly: "Take and eat, this is my body; take and drink ye all of it; this cup is the New Testament in my blood, this do in remembrance of me," and do it not only once, but repeatedly until the end of time? Our blessed Lord desired, by means of this Sacrament and Testament, to keep alive in us our remembrance of Him and our faith. He therefore instituted His Supper as a constant memorial of His death, through which we are delivered from our sins and eternal misery. But the Sacrament of the Holy Supper was instituted not merely that by its observance Christ might be honored; for He can truthfully say: I need not thy praise, I am the Son of God, whether thou glorifies me or not; but also and especially for the reason that we stand in need of such a Testament and Supper, and that we might be benefited by it. Listen to the words with which He gives the bread: "Take, eat, this is my body, which is given for you," and with which, soon after, He gives the cup: " Drink ye all of it; this cup is the New Testament in my blood, which is shed for you, for the remission of sins. This declaration is the Christian's most effective consolation; for he who really believes that Christ gave His body for him, and that He shed His blood for the remission of his sins, cannot despair, no matter what sin, the world and the devil may say. He knows that this treasure wherewith his sins have been cancelled is far greater than all his iniquities. The Lord's Supper admonishes us not to be ungrateful any longer, but to realize, together with other Christians, with whom we confess our faith and share this most Holy Sacrament, what great blessings Christ bestows upon us through it, and how we should therefore serve and praise Him as our Lord, who not only died for us, but also gives us, as nourishment for our souls, His body and blood. He desires that we should remember Him whilst we receive it to the strengthening of our faith and the preservation of unity among the Christians. 10

11 (continued) As Luther tells us, we should make use of this Sacrament as often as we can. When we come to the Lord s Table, we receive the true body and blood of our Lord. We remember the sacrifice that Christ made for us on the cross. We remember that we are saved through faith in Christ Jesus. We are fed and nourished each time we come forward. Having been nourished, we can go out into the world and live the other commandment Jesus gave that night to love others as He loves us. Please join us for all of Holy Week. Sing Hosannas on Palm Sunday. Come to the table on Maundy Thursday. Sit in darkness before the cross on Good Friday. Pray and wait on Holy Saturday. And celebrate the Resurrection on Easter morning. We ask that God may continue to comfort and bless Debi and their families in the days ahead. Our thoughts and prayers are also with the family of Dan Nichols, who passed away in February. Dan was a long time member of First Lutheran, and had spent the past several years at the Seaside Nursing facility in Portland. May God comfort his wife Cindy, sons Matthew & Jackson, and their family and friends in the days ahead.
