Dear Friend, In his famous exhortation to the church in Corinth, the Apostle Paul encourages believers whether Jews, Gentiles, slaves, or free to live in unity as one body, made up of many parts (1 Corinthians 12:12-14). No one part should neglect or reject the other. With unity comes a mutual concern for each other, as Paul goes on to explain: If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honoured, every part rejoices with it (1 Corinthians 12:26). God s call to His Church, the Body of Christ, is to suffer and rejoice alongside one another, to experience together hurt, heartache and joy. Christian brothers and sisters around the world face daily discrimination, pressure and persecution because of their faith. They are the suffering parts of the Body of Christ, who endure poverty, marginalisation, violence and even death for the sake of His Name. We can stand alongside them, through prayer and by practical support in their hour of need. Barnabas Fund is one way in which you can aid fellow believers, through your gifts and prayers for the projects you will read about in the following pages. Barnabas has also launched new opportunities for committed giving through Living Streams (p.6). If you choose to sustain a family or sponsor a child we will send you a prayer card with a photograph and details of the brothers and sisters you are supporting, as well as regular news updates. In this Gifts Catalogue, you will find many ways that you, your small group or your church can give a gift to Christians facing persecution, discrimination and poverty because of their love for the Lord Jesus Christ. By adopting a project, you can make a lasting, transformational difference to the lives of Christian brothers and sisters who are standing firm in their faith in the midst of trial. Each page of this booklet focuses on a particular area of need and suggests individual gifts, which could make a thoughtful alternative birthday or Christmas gift. We can also supply an attractive Thank You card to send to the person on whose behalf you have made the donation. For details of the different Thank You cards available see page 14. Growing your gift Regular gifts allow us to plan strategically, respond quickly to urgent situations, and also help to keep our administrative costs low. Our regular donations form can be found page 14. Please prayerfully consider your response to the needs outlined in the following pages and give as the Lord leads. Pray also for the projects described and those they seek to help. May you be blessed as you stand in the gap for the suffering Body of Christ. Yours in Christ s service, THE RT REV. AND RT HON. 3 Freed from bonded labour Pakistani brick-kiln workers Sadeeq and his wife Zubeda making bricks God is great! We used to feel like slaves but now we have become confident. Thank you everyone who has contributed to transforming our lives with hope and joy. Sadeeq Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob He upholds the cause of the oppressed. (Psalm 146:5,7) Sadeeq Masih, his wife Zubeda and their two older sons work in a brick-kiln. Brick-kiln workers in Pakistan, many of whom are impoverished Christians, are low paid. If someone falls sick or another kind of family crisis occurs, they have to take a loan from their employer, the Muslim owner of the brick-kiln. After this, money is deducted from their weekly wages to pay the interest on the loan, and this can go on for years, even for generations. As long as the debt remains, the family is bonded to their brick-kiln. They cannot leave to get another job and have to try to subsist on the reduced wages: it is almost like slavery. Sadeeq s family had a debt of $3,880. Every day with a heavy heart and a feeling of hopelessness, four of us me, my wife, my older sons would wake up before 4.00 a.m. and go to work, recalls Sadeeq. We used to pray to God to get us out of our misery. Then Barnabas Fund paid the family s debt. That day was the most miraculous and joyful moment of our family s life. I returned home, sat with my family and thanked God. Every freed family receives monthly food parcels (providing about 50% of their food needs), so their expenses are lower and the families can cover their basic needs and even put a little aside. Barnabas also supports 16 schools and five adult literacy classes to help advance the education of brick-kiln children and parents, most of whom have never been to school. Additionally, Barnabas is funding a sewing centre for young women to learn a skill that they can use to help support their families. These initiatives are specifically for Christian brick-kiln families with the aim of helping them attain more to a stable economic position and get better paid work. Barnabas Fund is happy to provide a photo, with names and ages, of the family you have helped to free. Please contact your local Barnabas Fund office. 3 $32 could enable one adult from a brick-kiln community to learn to read, write and add up $36 could provide a monthly food parcel for a brick-kiln family $80 could provide education for one child of a brickkiln family for one year $2,680 is a typical amount needed to free a bonded brick-kiln family from their debt, REFERENCE NUMBER: PAKISTANI CHRISTIAN BRICK KILN WORKERS

4 Saving hungry Christians Food and basic needs Samia s family is one of many Christian Pakistani families whose lives have been transformed because they receive a regular food parcel from Barnabas Fund The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry. (Proverbs 10:3) Syria has been torn apart by civil war, with Christians caught in the middle of a conflict which is now in its eighth year. During this period of such agony, when most of the foreign organisations left us alone, Barnabas Fund was the only one to come in and extend its arm of help and support to our Christians and churches without any hesitation. For seven years, all our needy people in our churches found they were being supported. Barnabas Fund stood with us, wrote Syrian church leader, Dr Jany Haddad. Barnabas has helped to meet the practical needs of Syrian Christians, including providing monthly food parcels to hungry believers, many of whom have lost their homes, jobs and all they possess. A typical food parcel for a family contains rice, tuna fish, eggs, sugar, lentils, cooking oil, powdered milk and butter. A monthly food parcel not only feeds hungry mouths, but can have a transformative impact on the future prospects of an entire family. Chanoo and Sapna s son was left with a weakened left leg having caught polio in childhood, which meant he was unable to find work. But the monthly food parcel provided by Barnabas to his Christian family in Pakistan turned his life around: From the money we were able to save because of the [food] ration we purchased a rickshaw. Our son drives the rickshaw and makes a small income from it. The rickshaw, with the help of the ration, has enabled our son to be independent and support his family. We are very grateful for this blessing. Last year Barnabas Fund s regular feeding programmes assisted 80,681 Christians in 10 countries. We helped those facing the threat of imminent starvation and those struggling to make ends meet in minority contexts where they are discriminated against. It is often difficult for believers to find secure employment through which they can earn enough to support their families. Many tens of thousands more were helped in emergency situations. $7 could help feed a hungry Egyptian Christian family for one week $36 could help feed a Christian family in Pakistan for one month $43 could buy a 100kg sack of rice for a droughtstricken Christian family in Mali By pledging a monthly gift, you can be a part of Living Streams, bringing lifegiving aid to impoverished and hungry Christians in contexts where they are marginalised or persecuted because of their faith. Barnabas Fund will provide you with a photo, names and details of the family you are helping to feed, plus news updates. REFERENCE NUMBERS: FEEDING FUND

Streams of lifegiving water Saving from thirst Barnabas funded the installation of a well for this Christian community in Guinea local Muslims made Christians pay for access to water, forcing many to fetch drinking water from dirty streams I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen. (Isaiah 43:20) It can be all too easy to take turning on a tap for granted. Where Christians live as a hated and despised minority, access to adequate water facilities for drinking and sanitation is not guaranteed. Sometimes Christians are even deliberately prevented from drawing water from communal sources. Persecution and poverty combined leave many Christian communities reliant on inadequate or dangerous water. Even where believers have access to water sources, many poorer families may still need to carry water on foot over considerable distances. When Christians in a rural village in Guinea, West Africa, refused to join in offering ritual sacrifices for supernatural protection, local Muslims and followers of traditional African religions banned them from accessing the communal water supply. Barnabas installed a new bore well in a church compound, which the Christians share with everyone in the village. Their grace and generosity in the face of persecution has changed attitudes. One village elder expressed regret for how badly his community had treated Christians: We never knew that the thing we were fighting [Christianity] could be a blessing to our village. Supporting Barnabas Fund s water projects provide not only water, but also a more secure way of living, leading to improved health and quality of life for persecuted or poor Christian families who do not have access to mains water supplies. $31 could provide a water filter system in Pakistan $235 could provide one tube well in Bangladesh $6,680 could construct one bore well in Guinea REFERENCE NUMBER: WATER PROJECTS FUND 5

6 A channel of blessing Living Streams For children from the marginalised, minority Christian community in Pakistan, a place at a Christian school means they are safe from the victimisation and even violence they might face in a government-run school and get an education and grow in their faith He will remember that you show your love to him by helping his people and that you continue to help them. (Hebrews 6:10, ERV) For Christians facing persecution and pressure because of their faith, one of the most powerful encouragements is simply discovering that their brothers and sisters around the world know of their plight and are sending help. Through Living Streams, you can commit to practically sustaining and strengthening persecuted Christians, by becoming part of an essential, continuous life-flow to fellow believers around the world who are in need. You can sponsor a child throughout their school years and see them grow in the Lord (p.8), sustain a family living in poverty with monthly food parcels (p.4), support an evangelist or pastor in their ministry (p.11) and strengthen suffering Christians through the grace of God s Word by investing in the gift of a Bible each month (p.12). Barnabas Fund will give regular news updates to all who join Living Streams by committing to regular support. If you choose to sustain a family or sponsor a child we will send you a prayer card with a photograph and details of persecuted believers you are helping. 1 Around the world, Christians are suffering, under pressure and even facing death because of their perseverance to follow their Lord, despite opposition. Through Living Streams you can bring them hope and encouragement, and stand with them as brothers and sisters in the Body of Christ through suffering and rejoicing (1 Corinthians 12:26). $9 a month could provide 12 Bibles a year to strengthen and offer hope to Christians living under pressure and persecution $32 a month could sponsor a child to grow in body, mind and spirit $36 a month could provide a food parcel to help sustain a family $54 2 a month could support the work of an evangelist or pastor 1 Please note that we cannot normally arrange for the exchange of letters between a donor and those they are sponsoring. This is because of security issues in areas of persecution and to keep down our administration costs, so that we can maximise the help given to the needy Christians. 2 Suggested amounts are based on typical costs. But you can join Living Streams by giving any regular amount, large or small.

Standing alongside Christians facing violence and injustice Victims of violence Barnabas sent emergency funds to the survivors at Quetta to assist with burial, medical and other costs For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. (2 Corinthians 1:5) On 17 December 2017, two Islamist terrorists attacked the Sunday morning service at Bethel Memorial Methodist Church in Quetta, Pakistan. Nine Christians were killed and more than 50 injured. Barnabas Fund sent emergency aid for the victims to help with medical, burial and other costs. Barnabas has provided rice, dried fish, tarpaulins (for shelter), sleeping mats, blankets, clothing and other urgent assistance to displaced Kachin Christians fleeing attacks and aerial bombardment by the army in northern Myanmar. We also gave practical help to 243 of the Egyptian Christian families forced out of the town of El Arish in northern Sinai by a wave of deadly attacks on Christians in February 2017, likely perpetrated by Islamic State. Barnabas assisted with relocation costs, including rent, furniture and support for those who could not find jobs. In the last year, Barnabas Fund assisted 14,792 victims of violence and injustice in 14 countries. For believers in many countries, the possibility of violence is an everyday reality, with converts from Islam particularly at risk. Because of my conversion from Islam to Christianity my relatives and Muslim friends wanted to kill me, explains Dembe, a Ugandan convert. They demolished my house and because of this persecution, even my wife deserted me, leaving me and some of my children with no choice but to beg and sleep on the streets. He found help at a support centre for converts funded by Barnabas, which provides safe accommodation and training in a variety of trades, so they can rebuild their lives. I now have somewhere to live and I have begun to earn a living through growing sugar canes, beans, sweet potatoes and rearing chickens, says Dembe. Barnabas Fund helps with the everyday needs of Christians who have experienced violence and injustice by providing emergency aid for those displaced by violence, medical care for the injured, safe houses and refuges, and legal representation for those falsely accused. We also support widows in several countries whose husbands have been murdered for their faith, by helping with living and housing costs. 7 $14 could provide a set of two blankets to a Christian refugee family who have fled from the DRC to Uganda $135 could provide monthly support for a widow and family of an Egyptian martyr killed by Islamic State in Libya $410 could cover threemonths rent to house a Christian family fleeing persecution in Pakistan who are seeking asylum in Sri Lanka REFERENCE NUMBER: VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE in Sri Lanka

8 Growing up in the ways of the Lord Christian schools Supporting a Christian child through school can transform their future prospects, as well as give them the opportunity to learn in a safe, welcoming environment where their faith is encouraged Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6, ESV) Last year, Barnabas Fund supported the education of 12,380 Christian children in 115 schools in eleven countries. Sana comes from a poor Christian family in the Punjab region of Pakistan. Her mother works as a housemaid a low paid and vulnerable job, where she is open to exploitation and potential violence from Muslim employers. But the education Sana and her two brothers receive at a Christian school supported by Barnabas Fund has given her new prospects. She got the second best marks of her class in the end of year exams and wants to become a teacher. She also loves reading the Bible: I read my Bible every day the words which are difficult for me to read I underline them and ask my Bible teacher. Without the help of Barnabas Fund, these children would not be going to school, as her parents cannot afford it. Sana s mother, Razia, says: We hope for their good future. We don t want them to work as we work, in different houses everyday we are very happy that our children are studying free of charge in school. This is big help for our family. Many of Pakistan s Christian minority are trapped in a cycle of poverty and illiteracy. But with a proper education Sana should, Lord willing, be able to get a better and safer job than her mother. Her earnings can then improve the economic status of the whole family. Children growing up in countries where Christians are in the minority are often victimised in government-run schools, even being marked down in their work and failed in exams. In some cases, Christian children have suffered physical violence at school because of their faith. Barnabas assists Christian schools by funding teachers salaries, learning materials and other running costs. As a result of this support, Christian schools are able to provide places for minimal fees, so that even the most impoverished Christian parents can give their children the chance to learn and to grow in their faith in a safe, welcoming Christian environment. $11 could buy books and stationery for a child from the Santal Christian community evicted from their homes in Bangladesh $32 on average per month funds a school place at a Christian school for a needy Christian child Living Streams You can sponsor a Christian schoolchild and see them grow in the Lord as they grow up and learn. By pledging a monthly gift through Living Streams you can enable them to get an education in a loving, Christian environment, and thus develop in their faith, and transform their future. You will receive a card with the name and photograph of the child and a twice-yearly newsletter about the project, which may from time to time include news of the child.* *Please note that we cannot normally arrange for the exchange of letters between a donor and the child they are sponsoring. This is because of security issues in areas of persecution and to keep down our administration costs, so that we can maximise the help given to the needy Christians. 9 Enabling Christians to be self-sufficient Small businesses A three to four-month weaving and sewing course for Christian girls from rural villages in South-East Asia, funded by Barnabas, is giving young women a life-long skill and the opportunity to provide for themselves Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. (Colossians 3:23) In many countries, Christians face discrimination in employment because of their faith. It is hard for them to get a job, especially if they are a convert from the majority religion, and even harder to get a promotion. Or, they may be paid less than those of the majority religion for the same tasks. Instead of working as a maid in the houses of Muslim families where she would be at grave risk of abuse and exploitation Kinza has been trained as a seamstress and given a sewing machine through the help of Barnabas Fund. I was worried that I will have to work as a maid but I m very grateful to the Lord who provided me with a great opportunity to learn stitching dresses, reading and writing my life has been transformed. Now I am a skilful lady, I have stitched more than 400 dresses till today, therefore I am able to earn for my family and for my better future. Kinza can now help support her family safely, working from her own home. Barnabas Fund assists believers to acquire the vocational skills and/or start-up materials they need to set up their own small businesses so they can provide for themselves and their families. Last year Barnabas helped 547 Christians in eight countries to become self-supporting with their own small businesses. Your gift could transform a persecuted believer s prospects, giving them economic security. $36 could provide training in farming for a rural pastor in Sierra Leone $116 could provide a sewing machine for the wife of a South Sudanese refugee pastor to start her own business $358 could set up a mushroom farm for a Christian family in South- East Asia REFERENCE NUMBER: SMALL BUSINESS START-UP FUND 9

10 From hunger to hope Barnabas Futures Barnabas Fund is helping Christian refugees to become self-sufficient For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11) Hundreds of thousands of South Sudanese people, mainly Christians, live in sprawling refugee camps in Uganda and Kenya. Many have fled famine and conflict East Africa experienced its worst drought in living memory in 2016 and the UN expects the food crisis in South Sudan to continue until at least The South Sudanese refugees are unlikely to be able to go back home for many years. Barnabas Fund is delivering a three-fold strategy, developed in discussion with East African church leaders, to meet their spiritual, educational and economic needs. They have escaped the anguish of near starvation and the horrors of civil war our brothers and sisters desperately need pastoral care to help them deal with the trauma they have endured. In Camp Rhino, northern Uganda, there are over 240 South Sudanese refugee pastors. Barnabas is supplying bicycles to help the pastors get around the vast camp to visit families within their church communities. Most of the Christian refugees are used to growing their own food and all they need to start becoming self-sufficient again is tools, seeds and tubers. Barnabas Fund is also working with local church leadership to improve education although schools have been established, classes can be as large as 250 pupils, making it almost impossible for them to learn. $5 could provide a prayer book with hymns in the Bari language $125 could provide a bicycle to transform the daily life and ministry of a church pastor in Camp Rhino $1,070 could build accommodation for two teachers at a refugee high school $1,970 could provide a metal roof for a church in a refugee camp REFERENCE NUMBER: PR1401 East Africa Hope Spiritual; PR1402 Schooling; PR1403 Self-sufficiency

Supporting pastors and evangelists Christian workers Charles and Grace are sharing the Gospel amongst Muslims in their home country, Kenya He told them, The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. (Luke 10:2) Eni and her husband Andy used to work together to plant churches in Indonesia. When Andy tragically passed away, Eni determinedly continued the couple s work, while raising their children. She is only able to carry on because of the assistance she receives from Barnabas. We are so grateful to receive your contributions on a regular basis Your support really means so much for our life and ministry here, since the people we serve here are still unable to support us. We believe that only by His grace are we still able to run this ministry well we firmly believe that He will not leave us nor forsake us. He always provides by using many ways, one of them is by you. Once I realized that, I said to myself, Keep going, do not despair despite your struggles, for He will always be with us! says Eni. Last year, Barnabas helped to support 415 pastors and 65 church-planters and evangelists sharing the Gospel and strengthening the faith of God s people in 19 countries. They are ministering in their own countries (or to their own people-groups) in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Many face great hostility and opposition. Many congregations are too poor to be able to pay a pastor full-time, meaning pastors have to find other employment to cover their daily needs. Barnabas Fund steps in to assist with a proportion of their living and ministry expenses, enabling church leaders to focus on the congregations in their care. Freed from the burden of having to earn a living, church leaders and evangelists have much more time for ministry. 11 $45 could provide a month s support for a church-planting family in Indonesia $48 could support a pastor in Pakistan for one month $148 could support an evangelist in Kenya for one month $182 could support a pastor of a convert church in a Central Asian country for one month Living Streams You could be an encouragement and inspiration to Christian workers serving the Lord overseas by joining Living Streams and pledging a monthly gift to support a pastor or evangelist and their family. 12 12 Sharing the encouragement of God s Word Scriptures and Christian literature My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word. (Psalm 119:28) Rachel fled from her village five years ago as bombs rained down. For decades, her minority ethnic group in South-East Asia (who are mostly Christian) have been targeted by the military. Two of my neighbours were shot and killed Had we not run, we would have been killed too, the 61-year-old grandmother recalls. In the desperate panic, Rachel left behind her precious Bible. But she and other Christians in the refugee camp in which she lives have now received Bibles from Barnabas. This Bible that you are giving me is my second Bible that I have ever owned in my life I have been without a Bible for five years. I am very happy. $3.50 could print and deliver a hymn book to a Christian from a minority ethnic group in South- East Asia $57 could provide five copies of the Tigrinya language Bible for Eritrean Christian refugees $9 A regular gift of $9 a month could provide twelve Bibles a year to persecuted Christians Rachel, a 61-year-old grandmother from a minority ethnic group in South-East Asia, was given a Bible by Barnabas. She lost her previous one five years earlier when her village was attacked Last year Barnabas provided 212,067 items of Christian literature, including 26,706 Bibles and Scriptures, across 13 countries. The availability of the Scriptures is still extremely limited in many countries where Christians face pressure and persecution. Even pastors may not own a complete Bible and many believers do not have access to the Word of God in their mother tongue. Providing Bibles has a profound impact on Christian communities, encouraging church growth and strengthening the faith of believers. Living Streams Every year, you could be the answer to prayer for twelve brothers or sisters praying for what so many Christians take for granted a copy of the Word of God to call their own. Join Living Streams by pledging a monthly gift (of any size) to supply Bibles to believers facing pressure and persecution. We will send you a newsletter to tell you how the Bibles you provide are changing lives. REFERENCE NUMBERS: BIBLES AND SCRIPTURES FUND CHRISTIAN LITERATURE FUND

About Barnabas Fund As part of the family of God, Barnabas Fund stands with our Christian brothers and sisters around the world, including the West, wherever they suffer discrimination, oppression or persecution as a result of their faith. In this way we witness to the love of Christ and build His Kingdom. 1. We encourage prayer for the persecuted Church by providing comprehensive prayer materials. We believe in the power of prayer to change people s lives and circumstances, either through grace to endure or through deliverance from suffering. 2. We channel money from Christians through Christians to Christians. Donations from individual Christians and churches are forwarded to local ministries and Christian organisations in contexts of persecution, mainly in Muslim-majority environments, to bring about practical and spiritual transformation in the lives of suffering believers. We fund projects that have been developed by local Christians in their own communities, countries or regions. Thus we act as equal partners with the persecuted Church, whose leaders often help to shape our overall direction. 3. We tell the untold story about the plight of persecuted Christians and speak out on their behalf, making their needs known to Christians around the world and to governments and international bodies. We seek to tackle persecution at its root by making known the aspects of religious and secular ideologies that result in injustice and oppression of Christians and others. We also equip Christians in the West to meet the challenge that other religions pose to the Church, its mission and society. We believe in the clear Biblical teaching that Christians should treat all people of all religions and none with love and compassion, even those who seek to persecute them. We carry out our vision and purpose accordingly, but we will not compromise what we believe the Word of God teaches. As we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
