1 Saint Mary s Catholic Church January 27, 2019 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 Corinthians 12:12-30 Body Block It is hard for some people to get along. We think the worst of strangers in our way. We get tired of people we work with every day. Kids in the family fight with one another. It is hard to get along. There are many reasons to work at it, though. Fighting creates tensions we do not need. It puts us on edge and violates the interior harmony we seek. Work gets done more smoothly, learning happens more peacefully, love is shared more fully, when people get along. Paul tells the Corinthians that they should think of themselves as one body, not as different people. Earlier on in this letter, he already complained about the divisions in their church. The one community was splintering as people took sides under different natural leaders. They intuited that they were one community, but they lived as though they were many who were not getting along. Paul urged them to think of themselves as one. The body is not a single part, but many. The foot and the hand get along. So do the ear and the eye. They do not compete with each other. They do not claim to be the only part in the entire body. If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy. It is easier to get along when we start from this premise: We are already one. Written by Paul Turner. Copyright 2009, Resource Publications, Inc., , All rights reserved. Patterson, DDS, DC, USN Thomas Scheuerman, Army TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Saturday s feast of the Presentation is a day for the blessing of candles. Why does liturgy require candles? In the first years of the church, worship was often at night, and candles and torches were carried from place to place within the worship space as needed. Candles were also a mark of festivity and hospitality when people gathered for prayer in homes, and later on in large buildings with thick walls and dark corners. But even after gaslight and electricity, candles were kept. Part of the reason has to do with the warm, clean light of a candle s flame. Candles are a good sign of the partnership of God and creation: wax made by bees, gathered and fashioned by human hands into something beautiful and useful. In order for the light to shine, the candle surrenders itself, almost as if it is pouring itself out so that the light can flood into the world. The candle of baptism, placed into our hands, and carried again and again, speaks silently of that same wisdom. If you would save your life, you must lose it. You must pour your life out like Christ so that you may be filled with the light of his love. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. BROKEN BRIDGES When we cannot forgive, we break the bridge over which we must pass if we would ever reach heaven; for everyone has need to be forgiven. 7 St. Mary s Parish Council Minutes January 15, 2019 Present: Father Joe, Frank Veer, Connie Walters, Patty Wheeler, Jimmer Pinjuv, Julie Jasper, Jim Hardy, and Margie Black. Stephanie Elbert recorded the minutes. Absent: Brad Testerman The meeting began with a prayer from Connie Walters. Patty Wheeler read the Parish Mission Statement. The December minutes were approved with one correction. Concerning the rose window, the minutes stated half of the cost comes from the foundation. In actuality, half of the cost has been paid by the foundation. The foundation will pay the rest of the cost in late Finance Report: Jim Hardy presented the December financial summary. Income was $16,000 above budget for the month and $6,000 above YTD. $25,000 was transferred from the Vision Account into the Operating Account in early December. Without the transfer we would have been $2,700 overdrawn. Expenses: Payroll/Mileage includes an annual insurance bill of $979 for Fr. Joe s car; Office Supplies & Expense includes the annual software license of $2,403; Social Activities reflects a $300 bill from the parish picnic and a $756 bill for turkey dinner supplies. Old Business: Parish Survey Approximately, 140 surveys were submitted. Mary Elick and Mary Ann Soerries summarized the demographics and tabulated every response in per question order. As the Council was looking over the results, Fr. Joe suggested that a couple of Council members and someone not on the Council sit down and decide actionable categories. Frank Veer and Connie Walters volunteered. They will try to recruit a third person. Father asked that they report back at the February meeting. Church & office doors work has been done on some of the doors. Parts are here for the remaining doors, and we are awaiting someone to come in and finish the job. Pastor s Time: Father Joe is looking for two people to fill vacancies on the Parish Council. He asked that a notice be placed in the bulletin, with a request for interested persons to notify him by the 15 th of February. Father is setting up a parish Lenten Retreat. Further details will be announced. New Business: Patty Wheeler referred to the Parish Council By-Laws pointing out that years ago there were standing committees that reported to the Council. She posed the idea of bringing those back as a means to help grow the parish. Four of the six committees were discussed. Margie Black was interested in Social Ministry, Patty Wheeler in Spiritual Life and Worship, and Frank Veer in Catholic Education and Formation. Father Joe noted that the Parish Council is to be used for vision. He suggested that the Council have a retreat and planning day. Members checked their calendars and it was agreed to hold it on Saturday, March 2 nd from 8:00 am until 3:00 pm in the parish center. Fr. Joe closed the meeting with a prayer. The next Council meeting will be on Tuesday, February 19, 2019.
