1 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Today is the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time and the last time the priest will wear green vestments until sometime in mid-june Our first reading today is from the Book of Proverbs and is often used as a reading for weddings. It describes the perfect wife and is from an ancient poem in Proverbs in which each verse begins with a different letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The reading concludes with the theme of fear or reverence of the Lord which is how Proverbs begins. When we recognize that God is our creator and we are not God, then our faith leads us to seek Wisdom all the days of our lives...our second reading is from Paul s Letter to the Thessalonians which we have been reading from for several weeks. Appropriate for the end of the liturgical year, it speaks of the end of time. Paul is reminding readers to be alert and have nothing to fear because we are children of the light..today s Gospel is the familiar Parable of the Talents. Proclaiming it as the liturgical year comes to an end serves as a reminder that in the interim before the end of time and final judgment, we need to live faithfully, actively taking responsibility for the talents we have been given. In Jesus time, talent was a high-value unit of currency. In the parable, the master distributes the talents, goes away, and after a long time returns. In the early church, people interpreted this that after having spoken with his servants the master leaves. Early readers understood the master as Christ, his leave-taking as Christ s ascension and his return as the parousia or the second coming of Christ...Today concludes our ordinary Sundays of the year. Next Sunday, the last Sunday of the church year, is always the feast of Christ the King. Then we begin a new church year with the first Sunday of Advent. Our gospels will come next year from Mark and we will begin the new translation of the Mass on that first Sunday of Advent...A hard cover, 84 page book on the history of St. Patrick s Parish is presently being printed and will be available beginning November 19. You can get one in the Gift Shop or the parish office. The book contains a multitude of black and white, sepia and color photographs, many of which have never been published before. It traces the earliest establishment of Catholicism in Erie, the founding of St. Patrick s Parish and its history up to the present. Available at a cost of $20, the book would make a perfect Christmas gift. We can also ship books for an additional $5 charge....several people have asked that I keep you aware of trips that we are offering. We have one departing Erie on September 1, 2012 to Barcelona, Spain. A half day tour of Barcelona culminates in boarding a Princess line cruise ship for a 7 night Mediterranean cruise with stops in Sete, France; Portofino, Italy; Florence, Italy; At Sea; Carthage, Tunisia; Sorrento, Italy and docking in Rome where we will stay for 2 additional nites. The trip departs Erie Sept. 1, 2012 and returns Sept. 11. It is filling very fast and we only have 9 cabins left. If interested, contact the parish office..st. Patrick parishioner Jamie Powers is one of five seminarians for the Diocese of Erie who are featured on the cover and in an inside interview in the current issue of the Cathedral Prep Alumni magazine. Jamie notes in his interview that I m not sure I would be at St. Mark s right now if I had not gone to Cathedral Prep. Jamie is in his senior year at Gannon and next year will begin his four years of theology studies. Please keep him in your prayers. We desperately need good young men like Jamie in priesthood..st. Patrick s Parish is grateful to Kathy Alessi who donated a beautiful new ciborium to the parish in memory of her mother, Alice Horan. A ciborium is the gold vessel we use to hold hosts for distribution at Communion..The ballots for St. Patrick parishioners have been returned and I m happy to tell you there were only 2 No votes. It s nice to know that you re as excited about this project as I am. I m going to meet soon with a representative from the Conrad Schmitt Studio and we ll finalize the design with the committee and then establish a time table..we had talked of having Bishop Trautman here next October 20th for the Saturday evening Mass to be followed by a cocktail hour and dinner at the Convention Center, but it appears that some of the church will still be scaffolded. I wonder if we could just have a regular Mass that evening and then the celebration at the Convention Center, and invite the bishop to come and rededicate the church after it s finished. Perhaps when we do the rededication of the church, we could then arrange something like wine and cheese at the Cathedral Center. Let me know what you think. Once the work in the church is finished we are going to publish a color brochure with photos of the interior as well as the names of the people who supported the project. That will be made available to everyone in the parish..gannon University is again offering educational grants to new students who are registered and active in a parish in the Diocese of Erie and an additional $1,500 grant to graduates of one of our Catholic schools. During the school year, Gannon diocesan students received a total of over $4,870,000 in grants. A total of 531 students received $760,000 in diocesan grants and $5,371,154 renewable financial assistance. If you are looking at colleges, Gannon is certainly worth consideration. It s a great school and everyone goes out of their way to help the students..a sign in front of a Baptist church in rural Ohio read recently Adam blamed Eve. Eve blamed the snake and the snake didn t have a leg to stand on...
