1 1 HERE AND NOW JULY 2011 Contributions to this Newsletter are very welcome and can be made by ing them to or to Next issue October 2011 This Newsletter comes to you from the Anglican Parish of Port Lincoln in the Diocese of Willochra News around the Parish from Peter Linn... Since the last Issue of the Here and Now lots has happened, the most significant being: I have attended the Annual Diocesan Synod which was held at Clare. At this synod, I was elected to be a member of the Diocesan Council which meets six times a year at Gladstone. I have also spent two weeks working for The Department of Defence providing relief Chaplaincy as Co Ord Chaplain at Edinburgh. As a result of my time at Edinburgh I decided to discharge from Defence effective 31 August, St Thomas Port Lincoln A progressive service was held where we moved to various places in the town and prayed with community members. I would like to thank Mary Ford for her willingness to allow us to use the Boston Bay Winery for the latter part of the service. I have taken three weeks annual leave and enjoyed my time visiting relatives in New Zealand. I had the privilege of being part of the Ordinations which were held on 2 July here at Port Lincoln. I would like to thank all who took part in the preparation for this event and the work undertaken on the day, not only at the Service, but also the lunch which followed. Having five people ordained in Lincoln must surely be a first. It is great to have the Rev d Ruth Buxton licensed both to this parish and the Ministry District of Eyre. I am excited as to how her ministry will grow especially in the area of prison ministry. St Matthew s Poonindie Rose and I have completed the Rectory dinners. I am continuing to visit members of the parish. As a result of the Ordinations being held in July, I have decided to hold the Sea Sunday Celebration at St Thomas Church instead of the Yacht Club. Perhaps next year we can look at holding this event outside of St Thomas and make it an Ecumenical event. Support Ministry to the Ministry District of Eyre At present both the Rev d Ruth Buxton and I are providing relief ministry for this area. We do not see any change happening to this arrangement in the next six months. St Matthias Wangary DONATIONS NEEDED * Breakfast foods for the Port Lincoln High School and Port Lincoln Primary School programs Please leave in the box provided at the Parish Centre Evening Service for young families I am looking to start an evening service at St Thomas for young families who are not able to attend our Sunday morning worship. I intend to call a meeting of those interested to test the response to this idea. At this stage I have no idea of the frequency or type of service which will be provided. That will be decided by the response from the meeting. This meeting will be on September 4 th at 5.00pm at St Thomas Church. Last but not least I would like to thank the Parish for their support and encouragement during our first few months in this parish. Both Rose and I feel supported and welcome in this place. Peter

3 3 MINISTRY DAY AT CUMMINS Do we feel comfortable as evangelists in everyday life and conversations? Bishop Garry Weatherill, and two St Thomas leaders Ruth Buxton and Andrew Morris, took leading roles in this interesting day on May 28 at St John and St Jude s church, Cummins. Bishop Garry clearly encouraged us all to develop active listening when we have conversations with others. Remove the ear plugs of our own lives and agendas to become engaged in what the other is saying. Forget competitiveness in the dialogue. Cultivate a generous spirit, be ready to offer hospitality, even in its simplest form, to continue the relationship. And if there is an opportunity to share your faith, above all be authentic and sincere and use language which is your own and not off-putting. A session titled Street Conversations by Ruth Buxton drew on her experience from working in a city mission, which showed the possibilities of connecting with those who are outside the cosy church walls of the known. Andrew Morris, a parent and teacher of teenagers, spoke of the challenges the church faces in making an impact on the young in this age of technology and science. He spoke of the great divide between the established religious practices we know and the restless pre-occupations of Generation Y. The Rev Prue O Donovan from the Copper Coast spoke of her special congregation called All Sorts who have formulated their own kind of worship and fellowship. This supplementary Ministry Day was offered to the EP region especially because of our distance from the Diocesan Centre. As a first, it was a good start, with about a dozen attending, mostly from the Cummins Parish who hosted us with venue and lovely eats. It is hoped that other such training sessions will follow, with more participation from Port Lincoln and other EP parishes. I really enjoyed it. 4 4 Willochra at work: Synod 2011 at Clare On a cool clear autumn morning, Synod began with worship at the St Mary s Catholic Church, in Clare. It was just the right size for our assembly, well appointed and acoustically most pleasant, and a very tangible example of ecumenism at work in Clare. We are the ones we have been waiting for. This was the theme of Bishop Garry s Report to Synod. The sentiment echoed in so many different places as we addressed the business paper. In claiming to be followers of Christ and members of his Church we must...recognise that we are responsible for the way Mission and Ministry is shaped in our time and place...we cannot avoid the responsibilities of being the Christ bearers in our own time and place. E.g. our personal involvement in outreach activities like Back to Church Sunday, (11 th September, this year), as well as in other activities where we cooperate with other churches, extend help and friendship, and do church in our communities and support missionaries and mission projects at home and abroad. A motion to encourage every ministry unit in the Diocese to reaffirm its commitment to welcoming and including people in the life of the church by investigating factors which may prevent people from participating fully... and encourages the initiation of improvements which embrace accessibility and participation was addressed with enthusiasm and support by many speakers. Synod members were urged to look at their own and their church s practices and appraise them, asking how they might be viewed by people outside or visiting the church. We also learned of a new ministry direction with the announcement of the appointment of an experimental ministry to the mining industry in the north of the state, intended to serve the needs of the Fly In Fly Out working camps, and of their families back home left behind in the city. The Reverend Peter Palmer has been appointed as the Anglican Chaplain. Please pray for the success of this initiative to support the miners and their families. Ministry Appraisal for stipended clergy. There has long been a call for a process of review and appraisal which could be undertaken in a more caring manner for both clergy and congregation. A small group has been investigating a Melbourne Diocese model which may be the most suited to Willochra s needs. A sample of the process was presented for members to comment on, and a revised version, suitable for this diocese is expected to be presented at the next Synod. An award for long and faithful service to the Seafarers station at Port Lincoln Mission was presented to Rosalind Bascombe who has served as secretary/treasurer and roster officer, for her long and faithful service. Thank You Rosalind. Margaret Vivian Address update: Nancy Collinson is now residing at Pioneer Village The Bishop of Willochra, the Right Reverend Garry Weatherill sent the following letter to Peter: I am writing to thank you, on behalf of the Diocese, for all the work that you and the people of the Parish put in to making the ordination such a terrific event. The organisation from the people of Port Lincoln was just marvellous and it enabled the whole thing to flow smoothly and happily. Please pass on my grateful thanks and very best wishes to the team who helped put things together, especially those who organised the Uniting Church interior and all those who prepared the great meal. With all good wishes and blessings, Yours sincerely +Garry. Coloured Glass Windows Ken Holden has worked with Lynette Leendertse to restore the coloured glass windows at the rear of the Church of St Thomas. Many hours have gone into repairing the glass sections and Ken is confident it will last for many years. St Thomas Church Council News ''In God We Trust'' Painting At he Parish hall the doors to the Parish Office and the steps have been painted. John McLauchlan has completed a lot of painting to the church exterior as well. Count your blessings instead of your crosses; Count your gains instead of your losses. Count your joys instead of your woes; Count your friends instead of your foes. Count your smiles instead of your tears; Count your courage instead of your fears. Count your full years instead of your lean; Count your kind deeds instead of your mean. Count your health instead of your wealth; Count on God instead of yourself.

5 5 Police Station Police Station THE PROGRESSIVE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION MAY 22ND 2011 St Joseph s School Austar Mary Ford at Boston Bay Winery Holy Communion at the Winery Rev Peter Linn organised an innovative Progressive Service for the congregation of St Thomas which was held on Sunday May 22nd. The service started in St Thomas and then we all walked through the rain! - to the Police Station where we continued with prayers. We then moved to St Joseph's school to continue in the educational environment of Jane Morris classroom. We sat on little chairs in a brightly decorated room, prompting people to recall their school days and the people they went to school with. We all then moved on to Austar the fresh seafood outlet where we continued with the service accompanied by the Austar staff, in amongst the fresh and frozen produce. Finally we drove out to the Boston Bay winery where we were entertained by Mary Ford s poetry recital, warmed by the fire, enriched by the completion of Holy Communion and wonderfully fed by the beautiful food prepared by Tony Ford. It was a delightful day and thanks must go to all who made it possible. NEWS FROM CUMMINS... Our Guild ladies have held many of our meetings this year at Miroma Place where Addie is living. There are three other of our Guild members in Miroma and they all attend the meetings. Miroma is very welcoming and we all enjoy the atmosphere of the cosy lounge and we also welcome any other of the residents of other denominations, which makes for a rather informal meeting sometimes!! At the end of the meetings we join in with other residents for afternoon tea and a lot of chatting...avis Colbert

7 7 JULY 2nd 2011 Philip Hanlin, Ken Holden, Greg Jones, Trevor Rowan with Bishop Garry Aela MacFarlane and Nancy Collinson Jane and Andrew Morris Rose Linn FIVE LOAVES IN A FISHING CITY Nearly three hundred people celebrated an unique Ordination service in Pt Lincoln on Saturday, July 2, At Evensong, in the St Thomas Church the night before, David Amery had preached with relevance on The call to the unlikely from telling insights into Saints Matthew and Paul. And prior to the weekend +Garry led a retreat for the Ordinands in the beautiful space, Nyroca, cared for by parishioner Malcolm Schluter. The loaves could hardly wait for the clear blessing that was to come to them and so many. The Uniting Church generously provided the venue for this memorable day and all could sit in comfort; first to hear a piano program by Judy Pearce and then to participate in the liturgy. Clergy from across the Diocese came to encourage and bless us all. Bro. Gregory Stevens SSM, Peter and Helen McAlley and Ruth Buxton were ordained deacons and Steve Davis was priested. One senior worshipper commented later, The whole thing filled me with new hope. God has become very near and dear again. Almost everyone there received Holy Communion including those from other faith communities. Both agnostics and atheists also commented on the sense of celebration and the pleasure of being moved during the service. Two little girls stole my heart. Lily McDonough ran across the front in the middle of the service, leapt into my arms, nestled there and whispered, I love you. Her big sister Abbie, robed in a mini-me gown like her mother Andrea, was the peerless crucifer for the day. The singing was sensational. The final hymn Guide me O Thou great Redeemer sounded better than a Welsh football match with its flute obbligato by Vaughan McAlley. A superb lunch in the St Thomas Parish Hall gave many a happy opportunity to catch up over soup and finger food. The generosity of the Pt Lincoln Parish was exemplary. We were aware that this Ordination would be our Bishop s last in the Diocese, and we all savoured the time with gratitude and love. Thanks be to God! Ruth D.
