Opportunities for Service Interested in helping at the Cathedral, but don t know who to ask? Here are some ways that you can help this month: 1. Give someone a ride to church. Contact Russ Snapp at Help fold, seal, and label the Message on January 24. Contact Riley Matheny, riley@ trinitylittlerock.org Vestry Nominees Neal Lea How long a member: about 10 years. Although a Lifelong Episcopalian. Service: Most regularly attend 9:00 and 11:15 services depending on which service our girls are serving as acolytes. Family: Spouse: Nat Lea Children: Lucy Lea, age 14 and Taylor Lea, age 12 Trinity Passion: Stewardship and outreach. Financial Stewardship allows for the church to keep the lights on, balance its budget and provide important ministry and outreach. It allows Trinity to support St. Francis House, LR Preparatory Academy, Stew Pot and The Early childhood Education Program. However, there are many ways to be good stewards of Trinity. Such as serving on the altar guild, being an usher, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School or simply driving someone to church who would otherwise be unable to attend. I would like to continue work in these areas and help the church community better understand why these are two important ways to be involved with Trinity. Jennifer Wilson-Harvey How long a member: I have been a member of the Cathedral for approximately 18 years. Service: I generally attend the 9:00 service. Family: Spouse: Jack Harvey Children: Robert M. Wilson, III (31) and Jillian Wilson (29) Trinity Passion: I am currently serving on the Flower Guild and Matthew 25 Committees. They are part of the network of committees that supports the work of the Cathedral - both inside and outside. However, I believe a healthy future for the Cathedral is highly dependent upon attracting, supporting, and maintaining the younger generations and their children. I would like to be a part of that important effort to continue the growth path we have been on for almost 5 years. Tom Fennell How long a member: Ellen and I have been members for the last 2.5 years currently, but were members before in between years at St. Michaels and Pulaski Heights Presbyterian. I was originally a member of Trinity in high school and in the Retreat Singers. Service: 9:00 service Family: Spouse: Ellen Moorhead Fennell Children: Grown children, Henry and Sam. Trinity Passion: Ellen and I have been very interested in our partnership activities with our Covenant church Bethel A.M.E. and with building community across racial and economic barriers. My professional work with public housing authorities has shown how compassionate and caring intentions can have real results. A personal observation is that Little Rock is only as good a community as its worst neighborhood - we have a long way to go. Also, it is no surprise that I am interested in the architecture of Trinity and historic preservation. 2
3 Vestry Nominees Continued Terri Erwin How long a member: I have been a member of Trinity Cathedral for 39 years. My husband, Chuck, grew up attending Trinity Cathedral with his parents who were also parishioners. Service: 9:00 service Family: Spouse: Chuck Erwin Children: Marisa Ann Erwin (30) and Clayton Erwin (28). Both were baptized at Trinity Cathedral and went through Confirmation at Trinity. Trinity Passion: The Children & Family Ministry is important to me and played an important part in my family s life when our children were growing up. Our children were always involved as Acolytes, participated in Church Pageants, EYC, etc. I taught the Children s Chapel, the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Programs, Youth Formation and helped with EYC for many years. A strong Children & Family Ministry helps sustain our church by attracting young families and it is important to help develop new and enriched programs for our Children & Family Ministry. Olivia Hussman Ramsey How long a member: 31 years Service: 9:00 service Family: Spouse: Joe Children: Wright (2) and Annie (9 months) Trinity Passion: As a mom and former kindergarten teacher, I m interested in anything to do with the children s program. I d like to be involved in any way that would be useful! Jan Murphy How long a member: 20 years Service: 9:00 service Family: Spouse: Rick Murphy Children: Jane Ann Murphy (31) Trinity Passion: The Flower Guild and the Wedding Guild - I enjoy being a member of the Wedding Guild and delivering the alter flowers to our members. It has been a blessing to meet so many of our wonderful parishioners. Lisa McNeir How long a member: 21 years Service: 9:00 service Family: Children: Ellis Carter, Scott McGehee, and Sophie McGehee Trinity Passion: Trinity Cathedral s commitment to serving it s membership and community largely defines this spiritual home. I am particularly interested in becoming involved with our relationship with Bethel A.M.E. I would like to build on this relationship, seeking opportunities to talk about what divides communities and exploring ways to address these divisions. Harold Joyner How long a member: 5 years Service: 11:15 service Family: Spouse: Jeanne Joyner Children: Jonathan and Jason Trinity Passion: The Bethel-Trinity Covenant has led to a meaningful dialogue between the two congregations. I have been a part of these important discussions. I feel that it is important to continue this covenant and possibly widen our outreach with other neighboring congregations. We have established relationships that are based on trust and faith. I would very much like to continue my involvement with this ministry. Voting for Vestry Nominees The Annual Meeting for Trinity Episcopal Cathedral will open on Sunday, January 20 during the 7:30 am service. The nominees for Vestry will be introduced at this and all subsequent services. Nominations will be taken from the floor at the 7:30 service only. Someone has said that this is a poetic expression of Christianity - and it is true that from John Donne and Shakespeare through Dorothy Sayers and C.S. Lewis, our English forbears have given Christian spirituality a literary twist. Through the year we offer services, classes, and pilgrimages to find out more. OUR LIVES AND TIMES Under this heading we group a rich variety of classes that start with the joys, responsibilities, and vicissitudes of life today. What questions do they raise for faith? And now shall we faithfully address them?

Our choral sound and literature are rooted in the Anglican tradition and our repertoire varies from Gregorian Chant to contemporary traditional music composers but includes a wide variety of genres and formats. Instrumentalists from the Arkansas Symphony and the Pinnacle Brass frequently join the choir at Sunday services and for special choral concerts. We welcome any Cathedral members who read music to join us! Contact victoria@ trinitylittlerock.org for more information. HANDBELLS The Cathedral Handbell Choir provides music for preludes, postludes, or other parts of our services on an occasional basis. Membership is open to all persons from high school and up. Although handbell playing does require practice and keen attention, it is a skill that can be acquired in little time. Anyone is welcome to join us. TOWER BELLS The change ringing bells are rung by members of the Trinity Cathedral Ringing Society, who add this unique sound to the richness of the liturgy at Trinity. The bells are rung Sunday mornings from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. as well as for funerals and, by arrangement, for weddings. All are welcome to join. It is open from 8:30 a.m. until the end of the 11:15 a.m. service. The nursery is also open during some other services and special events. Contact the office at (501) to confirm the availability at special services. The Nursery is located in Parish House. Parish House is the building behind the Cathedral including Morrison Hall. You can walk straight across the Garth (brick courtyard) and enter the glass doors, or you can exit the Cathedral through the back doors (where the procession enters and exits) through the connecting hallway past the vesting area. Baptism We are delighted to offer the Sacrament of Baptism to anyone in our parish who has added a child to their family. This is a joyous occasion where the entire congregation celebrates the addition to our parish family and to the Body of Christ. We regularly have baptisms on the days appointed for the occasion in the Book of Common Prayer: All Saints Sunday (November) Baptism of Our Lord (Early January) Easter Vigil (Spring) Trinity Sunday (Early Summer) Additional dates may be arranged by contacting the Parish Office. Baptism preparation for parents and godparents will be scheduled before each baptism date. Young Children ( th grade) Activities There are folders for children with crayons, paper, and children s bulletins in the baskets as you enter the church. The bulletins have pictures and activities that are related to the day s scriptures. There are also colored pencils and a variety of books on the table. Children s Church Times During the 9:00 a.m. service, children under the age of 6 process out of the service during the hymn before the Gospel reading and return at the passing of the Peace. They meet next door and hear the story, sing, pray, and have an age appropriate time of worship. The lesson is led by volunteer parents and parishioners. Parents are always welcome to stay with their children during the liturgy. Youth (6 th grade - 12 th grade) EYC The Episcopal Youth Community at Trinity is comprised of 6th-12th graders. EYC serves, forms, and empowers the transition between childhood and adulthood. We meet weekly during the school year to share meals, play games, go on retreats and outings, participate in service work, and grow together in our relationships with the church and community. Acolytes The Acolyte Guild is a committed community of young people who serve faithfully at our primary Sunday morning Eucharists, as well as church holidays and other special services. New acolytes are trained and commissioned in the early fall. Youth as young as 6th grade are invited to serve as acolytes. Youth Confirmation Confirmation is a sacramental rite in the Episcopal Church in which candidates express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop (BCP, p. 180). Confirmation classes for youth (12 years and older) are offered annually, beginning in the spring. These classes explore topics of Christian Faith and the Anglican Tradition. Confirmation Sunday takes place in the spring.
14 CHILDREN & FAMILY MINISTRY In the atrium, we use different methods to share God s story with the children. In Advent, we presented the prophecies (Annunciation to Mary, Prophecy of the Light, Visitation of Elizabeth to Mary etc.) to prepare the children for Christmas. After Christmas we use the parables. Jesus primary teaching method is the telling of parables. The evangelists report a great number of parables, noting that Jesus used them to teach many things (Matthew 13). Moreover, Matthew states that Jesus would never speak to the crowds except in parables (13:34). - Sofia Cavalletti, The History of the Kingdom of God: From Creation to Parousia, p 167 The Parable of the Mustard Seed The Parable of the Mustard Seed is found in all three levels of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and the children, no matter what age, tell us that it is one of their favorites. The older child is able to articulate that they are able to discover within two verses of scripture, that something seemingly so tiny and insignificant contains such power and strength to grow into a gigantic tree. This parable is so short, yet we continue to offer it to the children throughout their years in the atrium: the child will hear it when they are three or four years old, when they are older and again when they are eleven and twelve. What is it about this parable? He proposed another parable to them. The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field. It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes a large bush, and the birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches. - Matthew 13: The Parable of the Mustard Seed offers the child the beginning and the ending moments of the process of growth and transformation: the image of the seed and of the large bush. Jesus did not talk about what happened in between those two points. This further highlights the contrast between the smallness of the seed and the greatness of the shrub. What does this tell us about the Kingdom of God? Parables at the Prayer Table It would be valuable to meditate on this parable with your children. It could be a source of prayer for your family. In the evening, at your prayer time, you could read The Parable of the Mustard Seed or one of the Kingdom Parables, allowing your child to make their own observations (asking What did you hear? ) and then conclude with a prayer of thanksgiving to God who has given us the great gift of His Word. A Word About Parables: When we are in the Atrium with the children, we announce the parable, meditate with the children and wonder with them about the words of Jesus. We allow the child to work with the materials as part of their own meditation, as well as time for silence, prayer or song. The most difficult thing for us to do as adults is to simply stop and be still. We do not want to put ourselves between the Word of God and the child. In parables, we let the scripture do the teaching. We do not tell the children how to interpret parables, offer definitions of the parable, as no one formula or definition speaks to everyone at the same time. EYC is back for the spring semester beginning on January 6th. 6-12th graders are invited to join us in the Mitchell House on Sunday evenings between 4-6 p.m. We meet for dinner, games, and community building. January EYC Dates: Jan 6: Welcome Back to EYC Jan 13: EYC in Mitchell House Jan 20: No EYC (MLK Weekend) Jan 21: EYC Day of Service at Trinity Jan 27: EYC in Mitchell House EYC NEWS
