Speaker Henry Sandon MBE Tuesday, March 8th Tuesday, March 15th Pancakes and coffee at home of Joy and Trevor Picken Speaker Diana Alexander - Pen and Polisher The club s Christmas meeting with lunch and carols was a marvellous start to the Christmas season. Lunch was held in suitably festive surroundings at The Oakwood where we were joined by husbands and partners. Trevor Picken, husband of member Joy, with his Brass Quintet played Christmas music and carols which we all sang, especially the Inner heel Spectacular of the 12 Days of Christmas. A delicious lunch was then enjoyed with lots of fun, colourful hats and crackers. The club made its usual cash collection for GEAR, remembering those less fortunate. The shelter will also receive lots of useful toiletry items. (Pictures of this event appear on the insert page). Our club observed Inner heel Day on January 12th with a service at the Salvation Army Citadel, using the theme of a good neighbour, illustrated by the parable of the Good Samaritan. e remembered how Inner heel is a global organisation and with this in mind President Gill was able to tell members that our District Chairman had sent a sympathetic and goodwill message to District 77 in Queensland following the devastating floods there. A most enjoyable lunch was served after the service and guest John Sargent from Gloucester Rotary Club presented President Gill with a pennant from the La Rochelle Inner heel Club which he had visited on their 40th birthday. They also sent greetings for our club s upcoming 80th birthday celebrations. There is much to look forward to with our Interclub Lunch meeting celebrating our 80th birthday on ednesday, February 23rd 2011 at the Brickhampton Golf Complex. Henry Sandon of Antiques Roadshow fame will be our speaker and the Mayor of Gloucester will be one of our special guests. Linked to this - on Sunday February 20th at 3pm members are invited to attend Evensong at Gloucester Cathedral which will commemorate this important anniversary. Refreshments will follow the service. Shrove Tuesday s Pancake and Coffee morning is on March 8th when everyone can sample the delicious pancakes made by Joy Picken when she welcomes us to her home for this very popular event. Later in March - the the 15th - we have our meeting at the Farmers Club when the speaker will be Diana Alexander. The charity offers days out on the Gloucester and Sharpness canal for children and adults with learning and physical disabilities and those who are seriously ill. The Trust has two boats at Saul Junction, and guests can enjoy the excitement of adventure and the therapy of tranquility in beautiful surroundings - all totally free of charge. 2 eather Beaten! The appalling weather just before Christmas which curtailed the club s festive collections around the streets of Gloucester to just one evening meant that takings this year were down on the previous two years. Slippery snow and icy pavements meant that organiser, Tony Tetley s ambitious bid to hit the streets for six nights - including three at Tuffley - had to be abandoned. l Smiling in adversity - Amanda Chamberlayne l Top Left: David Seed. Bottom Left: Jeremy Dancey. Above: Major Adrian Allman and Club President Chris Peak who exchanged cheques at the Christmas lunch. Giving and receiving HAT a delight the traditional Christmas lunch was this year - and not only because of the turkey and trimmings or the delightful musical offerings from the King s School singers. hat made it special was the giving and receiving of cheques. During the past few years commanding officers from the Gloucester Salvation Army have come to this event and handed successive Rotary presidents cheques from the annual charity concert staged by the Army at the beginning of Advent. Over the past 11 years thousands of s have been raised for Rotary presidential charities thanks to the Army s generosity. In that sense this year s event followed the familiar pattern with Major Adrian Allman presenting President Chris Peak with a cheque for 1,700 which will go towards Chris s chosen charity - the illow Trust. hat was pleasantly different this year, however, was that Chris then presented the Major with a cheque for 1,000. The Army had had to take 4,000 from its reserves to fund 258 Christmas food hampers and 245 toy parcels for distribution to needy local families and children. To offset their loss of reserves the Army had appealed for help and the Rotary Club of Gloucester was delighted to step in. And it wasn t just the club that responded. Major Allman also received an anonymous gift of 200 from a club member, which was handed over by David Seed. And then a further 200 was given to the Army from the Purchasers...a group dedicated to fund raising through fun raising and headed up locally by former club member Jeremy Dancey who was present at the lunch and saw the cheque given to the Major by Graham Howell. Among other visitors to the club was the Mayor of Gloucester Jan Lugg who said that the city would be a lot poorer if it wasn t for the efforts of Rotary. The President of Inner heel, Gill Payne wished members the felicitations of the season while the President of Gloucester Quays, Robert Baxter brought news of the continuing growth of the city s newest Rotary club. The warmth of the occasion, continued with music by the choir from King s School under the able direction of their head of music Derek Harris. He introduced a short programme of religious and secular songs and even got the Rotarians and guests to join in a couple of the items...both Derek and his choir of eight talented singers who enabled the occasion to finish (literally) on a high note. l Left: King s School Head of Music Derek Harris with his talented choir whose delightful festive offerings rounded off a delightful meal. As always we are indebted to King s School for enriching our Christmas fare. l An intrepid duo - Nigel Halls and Richard Graham on store duty. Following fatherʼs footsteps O ur latest recruit to Rotary s ranks is Matt Cass whose father Mike was a popular member of our club prior to his sudden death. He was inducted by President Chris Peak in November and was warmly welcomed into the club by members, many of whom were already known to him. In one sense it was also a double whammy for Matt since he also got engaged at about the same time. Our heartiest congratulations. In an to In Gear Matt tells us a little about himself. He writes: I went to the Crypt Grammar school and then onto the Southampton Institute of Higher Education (now a university) to study Business Administration. Since leaving school I have worked at the family firm (even during the breaks in my university years) some 20 years in all. The firm in question is local insurance brokers Cass-Stephens Insurances Ltd. This was started by my late father Michael Cass in 1966 and has since grown from a one man band catering for local, personal and commercial business, to now employing around 30 staff and specializing in various different sectors of the market, including personal, corporate and several scheme insurances. The Stephens of Cass-Stephens is my mother s maiden name. Although she is not actively involved in insurance, she was the driving force behind my Dad and still is the driving force behind my brother James and I, who now run the business. I have, during my time at Cass-Stephens, worked my way up from doing the filing during school holidays, through all the different departments and now run my own insurance scheme. The Parksure department directly employs five people and specializes in the placing of Residential Mobile Homes, Holiday Chalet/Lodges and Static Caravan Insurances on a national basis and accounts for over 1 million of premium income. Outside the office, my interests include rugby (I am an avid Gloucester fan), skittles (I play for a premiership team) and I am still involved with my old school as treasurer for the Old Cryptians Association. The association s aim is to maintain contact with old In consequence, this year the combined total from both the one street collection and those at local superstores amounted to 1,912 compared with 3,419 in 2009 and 4,492 in hile our collections at Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsbury were reasonably buoyant, even there travel conditions reduced the number of shoppers and cut the amount of time we collected at the stores. hatever the result, full marks to Tony for putting in place an excellent project which failed to live up to expectations entirely due to conditions beyond even his control! l Experience and youth - Peter Nesbitt welcomes newcomer Matt Cass on board. ith a wedding in September to look forward to as well, this year should be one of considerable signficance for the club s newest member. members as well as encourage pupils development with a Bursary fund. I also enjoy gardening and have recently moved to the Longford area where I now have a greenhouse and a load of chillis that I have grown during the last year. My motivation for joining Rotary is that, now I deal with insurance on a national scale, I miss chatting and dealing with local clients (many of them Rotarians) and their insurance needs. hilst I may not deal with them directly I can at least listen and take any feedback or queries back to the office to be dealt with appropriately. I also know that it would make my dad proud to know that I have taken over at Rotary where he left off and that I will do what I can to help Rotary help local charities. Thank you for that Matt. elcome on board. 2 7
3 l The concert was well supported by members of Inner heel (left) and civic dignatories including the Mayor Jan Lugg and Deputy Mayor Geraldine Gillespie (seen right) l Above talented duo Becky Elliott and Sheron Gill and below MC, John Smith. Advent magic HEN soprano Susan Black bowed out of this year s Rotary charity concert at the Salvation Army citadel, Master of Ceremonies, Rotarian John Smith promised us we wouldn t be shortchanged. Far from it. Her absence, through illness, gave the audience an opportunity to experience the full range of the corp s musical talents - and we certainly weren t disappointed. For nearly two hours we enjoyed brass band music of the highest calibre, smashing choral singing by the Songsters, delightful musical and vocal solos, a spirited duet by two of the Army s younger members and - in true Salvation Army tradition - an extremely clever tamborine waving musical routine by the Christmas Crackers. And all was home spun. Even the evening s only import, Philip Storer, principal cornet player of the Lydbrook Band had had his musical origins and training with the Salvation Army. Philip s two solo spots during which he showed dexterity with the cornet, trumpet and flugel horn, came during an event which started with a rousing fanfare and ended with an equally roof raising finale from the band. Full marks must also go to the Songsters and in particular to their leader Philip ebb. For many, Philip s two vocal solos were the evening s highlight. He covered at very short notice for the absent Susan Black and this he did brilliantly. As both a choir leader and soloist he is remarkably talented as is Band leader Clifford Matthews who accompanied Philip on the piano. In addition there was a spirited rendering of inter onderland by teenagers Becky Elliott and Sheron Gill who gave their first public performance. The audience was well blessed with an evening of magical music making and they in turn joined in heartily with three hymns which reminded us this was still the period of Advent - a time of waiting for Christ s birth. It was a theme picked up by Major Adrian Allman who cleverly intertwined the meaning of Advent with his own experience of waiting for his wife to give birth just before Christmas in The beneficiary of this year s concert was The illow Trust the local charity which provides boating days out on the Gloucester- Sharpness canal for children and adults with learning and physical disabilities and those who are seriously ill. Details of the service they offered were explained to the audience by Trust administrator, Liz Rowland. The illow Trust was the chosen charity by this year s Gloucester Rotary club president Chris Peak who thanked everyone involved in the evening which raised the remarkable sum of 1,700. Once again the event was well supported by local dignatories including several councillors led by the Mayor Jan Lugg and Deputy Mayor Geraldene Gillespie and also included the High Sheriff of Gloucestershire Ceri Evans. l Incredible dexterity from Philip Storer. l The Songsters under their leader Philip ebb who also sang two delightful solos. 6 3
4 l e are grateful to Colin Rogers for the pictures on this page and the next most of which need no captions. Pictured above centre is President Chris with illow Trust administrator Liz Rowland while pictured far right are welcomed guests Arlette Lane (on the left) and Emrys Jones (right) with their partners. I ʻSkipperʼ Chris hands over life raft cash T S always nice when a plan comes together and a project is successfully completed - which is exactly what happened when the club held its New Year Dinner at the Brickhampton Golf Club at the start of last month. President Chris Peak had chosen the illow Trust as his charity for the year and its administrator Liz Rowland had suggested that it needed a life raft for one of its two boats moored at Saul Junction in order to comply with Mercantile regulations. The cost was 2,750 and by the time the New Year dinner arrived more than 2,000 had already been handed over to the Trust towards the cost of the life raft. After a delicious dinner the remaining monies to secure the purchase was handed over by Chris to Liz - thus ensuring that the charity willl continue to provide the disabled, the lonely and the isolated with a memorable day out on the Gloucester-Sharpness canal. Receiving the cheque, Liz said the gift was absolutely wonderful and praised the Rotarians commitment and dedication. She explained that during the winter months when the boats were not in use, essential maintenance was carried out and it was then that the life raft was sent away for servicing. However, the existing craft needed replacing if it was to satisfy official requirements. Therefore Rotary s gift of a new life raft was both timely and extremely welcome. Liz concluded by inviting club members to pay an evening visit to one of the Trust s two boats later this year when the weather was little more inviting. Earlier in his address, President Chris had also extended a warm welcome to Arlette Lane (Business Development Manager at the infield Hospital) and Emrys Jones (Dealer Principal of attstruck Centre) both of whom had generously allowed the club to use their car parking facilities to raise vital funds for the club s charity projects. Arlette and Emrys were hosted during the evening by car parking stalwarts Peter Cosgrif and Pat Collins. Thanks mainly to their efforts in organising and staffing the car parks for Gloucester Rugby Club s home games, the club netted more than 5,000 for its charity account last year. Also present were members of Inner heel led by their President Gill Payne and also Di Limbird and Hilary Cass, widows of former members Jack and Mike. Chris also thanked Amanda Chamberlayne and her team for all their work in arranging a delightful evening. 4 5
5 To boldly go... HAT an incredible woman Patti Price is! Now in her 70s she continues to undertake daunting money raising adventures in order to make a lasting difference to the lives of disabled, ill, neglected and abused young people. The widow of former member (and City Sheriff) Fred, she has been a staunch member of JoLt a small charity set up in Every two years, it organises expeditions all over the world for groups of young people (from 14 to 21) with significant disadvantages. For many young people the journey is a life-transforming event, jolting them out of their old lives, helping them grow in confidence and self-esteem. All of them long to travel to far-away places and JoLt makes their dreams come true. To pay for these journeys the charity depends on donations and gifts - but much of the money comes from sponsorship of challenges undertaken by an irrepressible group of charity workers. It was one such challenge - to Borneo in which Patti spoke about when she visited the club in November. She said the expedition had nearly been scrapped before it started with a warning from the Minister of the Interior that their proposed journey was too dangerous. However the group - six women aged 36 to 70 plus - carried on regardless. Patti explained that the jungle of the Maliau Basin in Sabah, Borneo is not flat. It is a series of often very steep, ridges. The group s trek started on one of 45 degrees and for the next four days in 30 degrees heat and 97% humidity they scrambled up, slid down, clung to the occasional handy rope, climbed or descended small wooden ladders and arrived at the end of each day with enormous relief and sense of achievement. They also arrived wet, muddy, stinking and hungry. Simon and Henry, the expedition s leaders, produced hot tea almost immediately which kept the ladies going until an evening l Patti fourth from left with other members of the 2009 expedition. meal which, over eight days alternated between rice and pasta with packet sauces for flavour and fruit, fresh at first, then tinned, as dessert. The fourth day saw the group return to the starting point and then take to the water for a four day white water experience. ith the river the group made real history. As it flows out of the Maliau Basin and nobody lives in the jungle there, nobody has ever navigated the greater part of the river - except for Simon and two companions who rafted it two weeks before to ensure it was possible. And it was, so long as you abseiled everything (rafts included) down a 30ft waterfall and could outwit crocodiles and withstand tropical storms! An expedition indeed and all to fund a four week trip to Borneo last July for a group of 20+ disadvantaged youngsters. Here they saw unspoiled rainforests and some of the world s most beautiful coral reefs, national parks and wildlife reserves. Patti s story was incredible and Patti herself is nothing if not indefatigable, indomitable and irrpressible. Members were spellbounded by her matter of fact delivery of an anything-but-ordinary feat. Enjoy the best of British YOUR ROTARY CLUB NEEDS YOU - (and three friends at least). That s what will be needed if we are to make a significant profit from the Brass Band Concert in aid of the Aid Polio Now campaign on February 26th at 7.30pm. In return you ll get a great evening of music from this year s British Brass Band champions, the Tredegar Brass Band. Thanks to Trevor Picken who booked them immediately they won the title, this is a rare opportunity for Gloucester Rotarians to hear the best band in Britain - and at 10 a ticket it s a treat you can afford. The Sub Rooms will seat 400 but already the dynamic Trev has sold around 200 tickets - and now it s down to club members to sell the rest. The Tredegar Band is one of the most famous in ales (and now the UK) with over 180 years of rich musical history. They are led by their charismatic musical director Ian Porthouse Variety - the spice of Peter s life l Peter with some of the toys and an illustration which he used during his job talk. Variety - so we re told - is the spice of life. A fact which could well have applied to Rotarian Peter Rust s career. It was also ironic that Peter - mine host at the Fountain Inn - gave his job talk on the very day that his wife Joy chose to give us a curry! It was a delightful talk well spiced with humour and covering many facets of Peter s interesting life. A Midlander by birth, Peter went to olverhampton Grammar School - reluctantly since he had set his heart on the local technical school. Despite his dislike of academia he managed a bunch of O levels and did a mechanical apprenticeship with heavy machinery maker Bowmaker. Here, it seems, Peter did a wide range of jobs including, designing and working on an embryonic computer programme for which he received the princely sum of 5,000 - not bad when the cost of a house was less than 2,000. He remained there during the motorway construction boom years before redundancy in Since then Peter has experienced a colourful career involving spells in security, running l These two magnificent trophies mark Tredegar Band s historic double which placed them at the pinnacle of British brass banding. They mark their well deserved victory at the Grand Shield contest followed by their sensational win at the British Open. Man in the middle is the band s musical director, Ian Porthouse lending his support to the End Polio Now campaign. (Picture Trevor Picken). who has performed and conducted with distinction all over the world. This band is at the top of its game and has a wealth of silverware to prove it. A great evening is assured so please support your club and ensure we have a good turn out. Tickets from - and raffle prizes to - Trevor Picken. If you can t be there he will also accept donations...but he would prefer your company. his own business, in asbestos removal, prototype lorry building, tractors (again) and in prison (as a workshop manager and latterly as a warden), to name but a few. It was from the last of these occupations that Peter and partner Joy took over running their first pub - the Shoulder of Mutton at Bromsgrove. Now several years (and pubs) later they are running the Fountain Inn - or to be more exact Peter is the facilitator and Joy is the powerhouse (his words not mine - editor). Their move to Gloucester has definitely been our gain as Peter has thrown himself into reinvigorating life in the city centre and was instrumental in bringing to the city the world s largest fairground/concert organ which entertained appreciative festive shoppers over a weekend just before Christmas. Apparently it also due to return again next year when Peter hopes to make the event even bigger and better and will attract more sponsorship. Is this a project for Rotary? ith the focus of Gloucester moving more towards the Docks we need more creative people like Peter who are willing to give of their time, and money, to give the city centre a shot in the arm.
