Dear friends, One of the strengths and joys of St Alban s Church is the great mixture of people who make up this Christian community. We are from every walk of life all sharing in a eucharistic community rooted in our baptism. We all find ourselves in this wonderful city of Copenhagen for whatever reason and come from all over the world. We recently said farewell to Liselle Ramcharan (who has returned to Canada) and to Choiling and Robert (and son Mark) who have moved to Virginia Beach USA. We have welcomed Tashi Lassalle who has moved here from New York, Cayenne Claassen-Luttner and Carl Hughes from USA, Daniel Hodges-Copple a student from USA, Mary and Graham Pay from Sherborne, Dorset, Apollo Musana from Sweden, Annie and Lorenzo from USA, and Hugh and Sherrill Taggart from Zimbabwe. The rich diversity of the worldwide Anglican Communion is represented right here at St Alban s and I thank God for this wonderful tapestry of life. In the coming months we will have 12 weddings and 11 baptisms, as well as the start of the tourist season. The opportunities to welcome people both to the church building and community, to celebrate life-changing moments and to nurture them in the Christian faith, are exciting and a core part of our purpose as a church community. This is a shared task for us all. During the COP15 UN Climate Change Summit our welcome message was St Alban s is a place of welcome, stillness, hospitality, prayer and engagement. Those words continue to be a good reflection of what we are trying to be. We are a busy place, yes. But our busy-ness must never stop us finding a place of stillness. This is why I am encouraging fifteen minutes of stillness and quiet in the church every Sunday from 10.15, as we gather to worship God. Our hospitality will rev up a few gears after Easter when the tourists arrive, to be greeted by our dedicated team of volunteer Guardians. Tourism is an important part of our mission as a church. Tourists are often also pilgrims on a journey. Many people coming to St Alban s as tourists may also want a quiet prayer, a moment of stillness or to light a candle. For some, coming here may be a first experience of the Christian Church. I recently welcomed a young Chinese woman to our Sunday service. On arrival, she looked like the usual tourist but she also came to the Eucharist. She told me afterwards that it was the first time she has ever been to a church service, and she cried as I gave her a Bible to take home. We must treasure our visitors. We may be entertaining angels unawares. (Hebrews 13:2) God has given us all a special ministry here, and it is exciting. Thank you for being a vital part of it. May God bless you and you family this Eastertide, as we celebrate the power of the Resurrection in our lives, community and world, and strive to share it. Jonathan

An Anglican Evensong 'The English Reformation: a special case for Protestant music?' (Talk open to all) As part of the Anglican Evensong weekend workshop there will be a talk given by Dr. David Allinson. He will explore the fortunes of composers, musicians and music during the turbulent decades of the English Reformation. He will also recount how the new service of Anglican evensong was created by Cranmer out of Catholic antecedents, and then look at how musical provision differed across the English church, from the grandest cathedrals and royal chapels to the humblest parish churches. Uniquely in Europe, the Reformation left England with a 'two-level' outcome - the cathedrals continued with traditions of relatively rich music in workshop while the parishes were more severely Calvinistic. We will contrast this with developments in the other Reformed churches of mainland Europe, discussing in particular the attitudes of Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli towards music. Saturday 10th April from 13:00 until 13:45 in the crypt of Samuels Church, Thorsgade 65, 2200 København N. (entrance to the right of the church) All welcome Free Admittance The weekend workshop will culminate in a service of Choral Evensong on Sunday 11th April at 16:00 St. Alban s Church, Copenhagen All are welcome Do please come and join us

THE BISHOP S EASTER MESSAGE, 2010 When the Roman Emperor Constantine won a decisive battle at the Milvian Bridge in the year 312, he had a vision. Constantine thought he saw in the sky the Greek letters Chi-Rho the first letters of the word Christ with the words in hoc signo vincit in this sign, conquer. Constantine won, and took control of the Roman Empire, bringing to an end the persecution of Christianity, and establishing it as a religio licita a permitted religion, and then recognising it as the religion of the Roman Empire, even though he himself was not baptised until he was dying. The church historian, Eusebius of Caesarea, saw the conversion of Constantine as one of the great providential moments. Just as St Luke, at the end of the Acts of the Apostles, brings the Gospel to Rome, the political heart of the known world, so now the kingdoms of this world, and the Roman Empire in particular, have become the kingdom of our God and of his Christ. Would that things were so simple. A millennium or more after Constantine a German monk, Martin Luther, saw the corruption of the church and, in part, traced it back to Constantine. Had the church captured the empire, or the empire captured the church? The relation between church and state has always been ambiguous. Jesus was put to death by both religious and political authorities. The Gospel accounts of his trial include exchanges with Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor whose name now echoes down the centuries through his place in the Creed: he suffered under Pontius Pilate. Jesus tells Pilate that his kingdom is not of this world. If it did belong to this world my servants would be fighting. Are you a King? said Pilate. King is your word, says Jesus. My task is to bear witness to the truth. When Jesus dies in the hideous agony of crucifixion, the reason for his criminal s death is nailed over his head Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the Jews. Who is this Jesus? A political threat to the kingdoms of this world and to Roman authority in particular. Who is Jesus? A disturber and distorter of religion, one who claimed to embody the presence and authority of God, who purported to forgive sins (which only God could do), healed the sick, attacked the traders in the Temple, and who proclaimed that in him the kingdom or rule of God was breaking in. It is expedient, St John records the High Priest, Caiaphas, as saying, that one man dies for the people, that one man dies lest the balance of religion and political power, the negotiated compromise, be overthrown. That one man dies for the people at a deeper level the ushering in of something much more profound, a redemption much more costly, a bringing in of that new order which sets us free from captivity to the powers of this world and enslavement to the domination of evil. As Christians asked themselves the meaning of a crucified Messiah, and sought to understand the paradox of how the preaching of God s kingdom of justice, love and peace, ended in the crude appalling agony of a criminal s death, they came to see it as a battle a glorious battle a wrestling with the powers of darkness. As an old hymn puts it: Death and life have contended, in a conflict all stupendous. The darkness over the land spoken of in the Passion narratives of the Gospels, is not just outward but inward. The great cry of dereliction, Eloi, eloi, lama sabachtani? My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? is the deepest paradox of all. God himself in our human nature knows the absence of God, the blotting out of meaning, the engulfing and overwhelming horror of darkness, nothingness, and the triumph of evil and death. The German theologian, Dietrich Bonheoffer, writing

from a prison camp in Nazi Germany, where he was shortly to be hanged, wrote of God allowing himself to be pushed out of the world and on to a cross. God saves us through that identification, by the seeming triumph of evil, and yet being absolutely and profoundly with us. Therefore he who shows us God, Helpless hangs upon the tree, And the very nails and spear, Tell of what God s love must be. Thou art God, no monarch thou, Throned in easy state to reign, Thou art God, whose arms of love, Aching, spent, the world sustain. How do we know all this? How can this dying be at the centre of our Christian faith? Only because the Cross is seen in the light of Easter. The Gospels do not end with the cry of dereliction, and the limp and tortured body taken from the Cross and laid hastily in a tomb. If the stone rolled across the entrance to that tomb had sealed the story of Jesus as well as his lifeless body, there would be no Christian gospel, no good news of salvation, no church. On Easter morning, on the first day of the week, just as the sun was rising the tomb is found empty. Why? Because resurrection, the new creation, has happened. In a multitude of mysterious encounters that new life is found to be victorious and triumphant. He is not here, he is risen. The Risen Christ speaks to a grief-stricken Mary Magdalene, and calls her by name; he walks as a stranger with sorrowing disciples, and their hearts burn within them. He makes himself known in the breaking of bread. He bursts through the imprisoning walls of grief and fear to speak the word of peace the peace which is the harmony of the new creation, a peace which passes all understanding. New life ripples out from the empty tomb in a transforming tsunami of love. Love s redeeming work is done, Fought the fight the battle won, Lo our sun s eclipse is o er, Lo he sets in blood no more. The Prince of Life who died, reigns immortal! This is the kingdom for which we pray; this new life for all creation. And the cross is seen in the light of Easter as the place where the glory of God shines out, in the love that comes down to the lowest part of our need. This is our story, this is our song! Let your lives be touched by this love, transformed by this love, a love which is to Easter in us, and reach out through us to bring new life to the whole world. Then indeed the kingdoms of this will become the kingdom of our God and of his Christ. As he promised in blessing and sending out his disciples, he is with us always to the end of the age. In that faith and hope and love I wish you the joy and the blessing of the Risen Christ this Easter. +GEOFFREY GIBRALTAR Diocesan Bishop: The Right Reverend Dr Geoffrey Rowell Bishop of Gibraltar in Europe

Beyond the Blue Mountains Earlier this year looking for words to fill a void, I came back to an anthology compiled by Elisabeth Bassett called Beyond the Blue Mountains. Published in 1999 I first came across it in the weeks after my father died. It contains a collection of pieces that helped me at that time and revisiting it recently I found different passages that confirmed the words in the foreword what is in our hearts we believe but find hard to say. As we approach Holy Week and Good Friday and reflect on the journey that Jesus was about to make I would like to share with you a contribution by Henri Nouwen about a conversation he had with a trapeze artist. The meditation has great meaning for me and encourages me to understand the faith that Jesus had on the cross. One day, I was sitting with Rodleigh, the leader of the troupe, in his caravan, talking about flying. He said, "As a flyer, I must have complete trust in my catcher, The public might think that I am the greatest star of the trapeze, but the real star is Joe, my catcher. He has to be there for me with split-second precision and grab me out of the air as I come to him in the long jump." "How does it work?" I asked. "The secret," Rodleigh said, "is that the flyer does nothing and the catcher does everything: when I fly to Joe, I have simply to stretch out my arms and hands and wait for him to catch me and pull me safely over the apron behind the catchbar." "You do nothing!" I said, surprised. "Nothing," Rodleigh repeated. "A flyer must fly, and a catcher must catch, and the flyer must trust, with outstretched arms, that his catcher will be there for him." When Rodleigh said this with so much conviction, the words of Jesus flashed through my mind: "Father into your hands I commend my Spirit." Dying is trusting in the catcher. To care for the dying is to say, "Don't be afraid. Remember that you are the beloved child of God. He will be there when you make your long jump. Don't try to grab him; he will grab you. Just stretch out your arms and hands and trust, trust, trust." Henri J. M. Nouwen A Roman Catholic Priest Our Greatest Gift: A Meditation On Dying And Caring Beyond the Blue Mountains is currently our of print but second hand copies can be found through online book sellers. 14 World Church Focus A regular series of short articles that focus on a different part of the worldwide Church each month; bringing news as well as a prayer of or for the area concerned. Chile Chile lies on the west coast of Latin America, between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountains. Its ribbon-like shape km long and on average 175 km wide gives it a hugely varied climate, ranging from the world s driest desert in the north, the Atacama; to a Mediterranean climate in the centre; to an Alpine climate in the south, with glaciers, fjords and lakes. It also means that the earthquake has affected an area almost the length of England like a quake in Newcastle bringing down buildings in London. After independence from Spain in 1810, Chile had a relatively stable political history until the 1973 military coup of General Pinochet. His 17-year rule was one of the bloodiest in 20th century Latin America, and left more than people dead and missing. Chile has steadily come to terms with the legacy of Pinochet s rule, although some divisions are still reported. Latin America s fastest-growing economy in the 1990s, it has weathered recent regional economic instability; but is vulnerable in a global recession as it faces the challenges of diversifying its copperdependent economy and addressing uneven wealth distribution. Around 30% of the population live in poverty; unemployment is around 6%; and crime continues to rise. Current president, Michelle Bachelet, is the fourth consecutive president from the left-wing coalition which has led Chile since military rule ended. Also the nation s first female president, she was herself jailed and tortured by the former military junta. Sebastian Pinera, a wealthy tycoon, was elected in January 2010 to become Chile s first right-wing leader since Pinochet. Due to be sworn in on 11 March, he has angrily dismissed comparisons with Italy s Silvio Berlusconi, also a powerful businessman. Mr Pinera promised that, if elected, he would set up a blind trust to run his wealth at arm s length. Almost 90% of Chile s population are Christian, of whom 70% are Roman Catholic. The vast majority of non-rc Christians are Pentecostal. Other denominations include the Evangelical Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist, and Anglican churches. Non-Christians follow traditional ethnic religions or belong to relatively tiny Jewish, Baha i, Buddhist, Muslim communities. There is freedom of religion. The Roman Catholic Church was disestablished in 1925 but legislation to make all denominations equal under law foundered in the 1990s on Roman Catholic objections. Introduced in the 16th century by Dominican and Franciscan friars who accompanied Spanish colonialists, the Roman Catholic Church has been deeply impacted by liberation theology. Protestant missions began in 1821, and the presence of the Anglican Church of Chile dates from 1830 when Englishman Allen Gardiner arrived with the vision of bringing evangelism to the native Indians of the south. The first church was built in Valparaiso, and services began in There are currently around 80 congregations, led by Bishop Hector Zavala Muñoz, and an auxiliary Bishop in the South, Abelino Apeleo Puel. The Anglican Church has made contributions to education, environmental health, and agriculture, and has a strong record of supporting people in situations of great vulnerability.

Pray for all affected by the quake through bereavement, injury, loss of homes or livelihood; for wise decisions by the authorities, and correct use of resources to help; churches as they respond to the disaster; a smooth transition of Presidents from Bachelet to Pinera; and financial stability. USPG, CMS and MRDF (Methodist Relief and Development Fund) are the main UKbased mission and aid agencies currently active in Chile. Other agencies are also involved in earthquake relief. Information compiled in March 2010 from various sources, by the Revd Mary J Vickers, from whom further information may be available. Contact her by at: mpvmailbox-wcf@yahoo.co.uk Guardians The pre-season meeting for the Guardians this year will take place in the Church on Wednesday 7 April at 11:00; sandwiches as well as tea and coffee will be supplied. Being a Guardian is a very rewarding experience. The Guardians are here most weekdays from May through September to welcome visitors to the Church. Being part of the welcoming team brings one in contact with visitors from all over the world. Some have more time than others, some come for a moment of peace and some to see the church, we currently have information on the church in 37 languages. Being a Guardian is an important part of our ministry. We run on three hour duty shifts and there are always at least two or more on duty at any one time. Ideally it helps if you can take a regular weekly slot but we have several Guardians who because of other commitments can only do limited weeks or act as substitutes. If you would be interested in becoming a Guardian please contact Chris or Nini and come along to the meeting. All the regular Guardians, the reserves, as well as anyone you know and who you think may be willing to help us out, will be most welcome to come to our meeting on April 7 as indeed will any member of the congregation. In order to ensure adequate refreshments, we will assume that all Guardians regulars and reservists - will come along; but it would be much appreciated if you could let us know by Easter should you not be able to come or if you plan to bring someone. As said above, if you have not been a Guardian before but may be willing to consider it and therefore would like to come along please let us know. Chris & Nini Leigh Tel.: cnleigh@privat.dk

Bridge Benefit We would like to thank Nick and Erica Archer for again hosting this years St Alban s Bridge Benefit on 17 March. Opening their lovely home to the many card players and marjong players, this years benefit was held in support of the SOS Children s Villages Haiti appeal ( or The afternoon began with a glass raised in memory of Edith Beyer who started the St. Alban's bridge benefit 25 years ago in aid of the Church Tower appeal and who organised the event annually. The Church is extremely grateful to Birgit Macnaughton who took on Edith s role filling tables and to Erica who assisted with the arrangements along with Erna Svala, who managed the logistics at the Residence. The catering was in the capable hands of Jean Gram Andersen and Katie Robson. Needless to say, the refreshments were delicious. Our thanks also go to those who donated gifts as door prizes and to L Oreal who very generously gave cosmetic gifts to the participants. At the end of the day we received donations of Dkr 12,400. We are grateful to all who came and gave. With love from Birgit, Jean and Katie International Women s Day Lunch We are very grateful to Joe Maerzke who took on the mammoth task of organising a lunch at St Ansgar s Hall on Mothering Sunday to mark the 10 th anniversary of International Women s Day. The event was well attended by the ladies of St Alban s who were waited on by the gentlemen and by the Seamaids of Copenhagen. In the convivial surrounding delicious lasagne were served along with an extensive salad bar and an ice cream dessert. The event was held in support of Reden a local Danish organisation that helps homeless women in Copenhagen. We were enormously grateful for the donation of beer from Carlsberg, wine and discounted food from Inco and bread from the HLM bakery in Christianshavn. We thank Joe and his team of seamaids for all their hard work and for organising the event. Nigel and Katie

Day trip to Kalundborg Would be anyone be interested in a day trip to Kalundborg to visit the cathedral? Depending on numbers involved we would try to find a mutually convenient weekday in early May to go either by train or by carpooling and perhaps in the latter case also visit a couple of other churches on the way back. Vor Frue Kirke in Kalundborg is the only five towered church in Denmark. Built in the 13 th century, it draws inspiration from the east. Originally Esbern Snares idea, the church was built by Esberns daughter Ingeborg after his death. Also in the town is the modern church Nyvangskirke, whose architect, Holger Nielsen, was clearly been inspired by his world famous teacher Kaare Klint. Among the churches in Kalundborg s surrounding villages, there are several with fine medieval murals still intact which might be a possibility to take in on the way back as well if we carpool. If you are interested in coming please contact the churchwardens in the first instance. Saturday Spring Clear Out Swap and Sell Clothing and Fairtrade Fundraiser Saturday 24 th April from in Church Out with the old and in with something nearly- new. We do not sell second-hand clothing at the Summer Fete but many have generously donated their clothing to raise funds for the church. This needs to be seen and sold. It s also the time of year when we all think about our winter/summer clothes changeover and there are always things we no longer want to see in the wardrobe. You, your family and friends are invited to bring them to church for a nearly-new sale on Saturday 24 April. Clothes, shoes and bags can be can delivered to the church on Friday afternoon between 4-6, or you can bring it on Saturday morning between Please ensure all items are clean and presentable. What we don t sell will be donated to charity, so nothing will go to waste. There will also be a Fairtrade stall with information on Fairtrade and organic products and where to buy them in the Copenhagen area, with various items for sale on the day. We will need volunteers to take the money, and to help provide refreshments and honest fashion advice. And of course we need you to come, bring and buy! For more information please contact Claire Clausen on or at Claire.Clausen@gmail.com
