BELZ AND COLE TO HEAD STU DENT PUBLICATIONS The chapel periods on Thursday and Friday somewhat ended the tension and expectancy of those who entered competition for student publications staff positions. On Thursday, Judy Sanderson, editor of this year's Tartan, announced that Mark Belz will be editor of the 1965 Tartan. Mark, understandably nonplussed, simply exclaimed, "Great Ankh" upon hearing his name announced. Dawn McCallum, editor of this year's Bagpipe, announced Linda Cole as next year's newspaper editor, but first gave warning to whomever the future editor might be concerning a certain rival publication which insists on sneakily snatching every new idea which The Bagpipe promotes. (Mr. Dameron hastily added that the staff of said publication -- possessing the word bag and carrying the connotation of wind unfortunately will not change.) On Friday, the two new editors planned to announce their staffs. Serving on The Bagpipe, as important co-workers with Linda will be a staff with a slightly different organization from previous years an effort to serve a growing student body more effectively than ever. John Barnes will serve as News Editor, and Daniele Mozes and Audrey Sneller will be Feature Editors in charge of special sections each week. Editor Belz announced a partial staff, with other positions to be filled in later. Serving as Assistant Editor will be Mary Margaret Peterson. Linnea Rayburn will be Literary Editor; Ken Deats, Photographer; Garry Sherrill, Advertising Manager; Dot Ehler, Typist; and Bev ICesselring, Circulation and Sales Manager. The Bagpipe staff extends heartiest congratulations to Mark and Linda and their staffs, and takes this opportunity to express its desire that will be a booming, year for The Tartan and The Bagpipe.

SUMMER SILLITUDE The two activities which have always proved to be most popular among Covenant vacationers are working and loafing. There are, of course, many degrees from the one e<treme to the other but, basically this is the way summer prospects for the Covenant family have fallen. Those who have not made any lucrative plans for the next three months don't hesitate to give their lazy hazy outlooks a delightful title. Mary Margaret Peterson calls it "sitting under a tree" while Janice Finch prefers "swimming at the Castle." Speaking of the Castle, there are quite a number looking forward to pioneering on the mountain. Linnea Rayburn, Judy Sanderson, Earlene Stewart, Jim Singletone, Mark Ward, Bev Kesselring, Bob Wildeman, Ed Heath, Sarah Stigers, Garry Sherrill, Becky Emerson, and Ed Heath are among the willing workers. Covenant will be represented not only in all parts of the United States but overseas as well. Merrily Richie already has her plane reservation for a trip to Scotland where she will meet her family and soak up some genuine atmosphere in the country of the Covenanters. Jim Landgren is busily counting up the hours up in the air as he works toward a commercial license here in St. Louis until the end of June. After that, possibilities are unlimited. He may even turn up in the funnies as a stand-in for Steve Canyon. Several students here at Covenant are on the verge of a long-term contract called marriage. At various points of the summer Dawn McCallum, Mary Graham, Kay Gibson, Walt Gienapp and Carole DePrine, Bill Wolfgang and Dave Peterson will begin their duties as bread-winners and helpmates. The fancy-free Carolyn Donaldson assures her friends that after sleeping for three weeks, she will don her duty booties and work somewhere most likely in a hospital. It must be nice to have a job waiting anywhere! Mark Belz plans to go to Dave Peterson's wedding, sell Post ick, and work at Cono. He would like to follow Pete's example but resignedly observes that there isn't much time and prospects are slim. Bobbie Morris plans to 30 home to Camden, New Jersey, where she is eager to baby-sit for her brand spanking new baby niece. Jan LeRoy will add some sparkle to her plans of clerking

in a hardward store in Bismarck by whirling off to New York in July for a week. While there she will attend Dot Buckingham and Dave LeRoy's wedding and sandwich in a few hours of World's Fairing. Steve Van Wechel is faced with the pleasant dilemna of deciding which of two opportunities to take. His decision will land him on either the East Coast at Hilltop Ranch or the Pacific Coast in Seattle working for his father and helping at a Christian radio station, KGDN, on weekends. And while Steve wonders which direction to take, Ginny Wrye and Frank Cole wish the compass had only one direction for them to follow. Ginny will be working in Washington as a nurse's aide in the medicalsurgical ward of a mental hospital. Frank will head for Connecticut where he will be working with the State Park Forest Commission. Woodsmen abound! Steve Fiol will also be working among the trees with the United States Forest Service in California. Paul Rayburn will be microfilming the summer away in Kansas City working for his uncle. These plans, of course, are subject to change pending his full recovery from a bee sting. W.P.M. should be well staffed this summer by virtue of the capable Covenant lasses, Sally Mahlow, Frances Bragdon, and Connie Wright, who will be working there. Covenant will be well represented in campus of all kinds: Sandy Shoop plans to counsel at a Christian camp for a month, and Ken Deats will be a staff member at Hilltop Ranch for the whole vacation. Mary Lou Baseler and Linda Ferris will teach and rounsel respectively at day camps near their homes. The final position in an article is often reserved for that which is to receive emphasis, so it is here. The Bagpipe staff has its tam o'shanters off to Audrey Sneller, Anne Haynidn, Gary Clark, and Linda Smith. They have mapped out their summer months with an eye to more education. This shows a fine spirit and no lack of real starch. Gary will be taking courses at the University of Washington, Audrey will digest a few texts at Wheaton, Linda plans to add six hours to her pile of credits at the University of Alabama, Anne will be wandering through a confusion of test-tubes as she studies chemistry in Wilmington. CHRISTIAN SERVICE CORNER Continuity is an idea dear to the hearts of Covenant alumni. Each graduate likes to feel that those parts of college and seminary life ^

which were special to him maintain that priority in the lives of students that follow. Although opportunities for Christian service are given and terminated by the Lord, early Covenanters can see in today's Christian service activities, continuity from "pioneer" days in St. Louis. In a previous issue of The Bagpipe, the work at the Presbyterian Church in Newbern, Illinois, where seminarian Don Hagner presently serves as student pastor, was featured. Covenant's association with this work dates back to the very first year in St. Louis, , when a group of both seminarians and collegians began to work in the small, rural church. A visit to the homes of people in the church will convince anyone how much those early contacts meant to the people in the church. A seminary senior, Ted Martin, now pastor of the Columbus, Ohio (EP) Church, served as the first student pastor from Covenant, with college senior Emma Scott, now teacher in a Christian school in Wilmington, Delaware, helping as regular Sunday School teach;#, young people's worker, pianist, cupir director, or whatever was necessary. Occasionally helping these two were Ed Fuller and Ray Wright, both college students. Mr. Fuller now serves as music director in an Erie, Pennsylvania, church; and Ray Wright is pastor of the EP church in Minco, Oklahoma. Succeeding Ted Martin as student pastor was Bob Scott, then a Seminarian, now pastor of the EP church in Issaquah, Washington r. and moderator of the Presbytery of; the Pacific Northwest. He and his wife Libby served for nearly a year, with Emma Scott, continuing in her varied responsibilities during the following year. Recent seminarians to gain valuable experience while helping in the work have been Dan Orme and Lou Zeigler, both graduates of the seminary in last year's class. Another area in which Covenanters played a significant part that continues today, is the EP church in nearby Hazelwood, where Will Barker, a part-time faculty member, is pastor. Mr. Barker was a seminary junior when a few faculty members and several students began to canvass the Hazelwood area for the possibility of starting a church. First services were held on a cold Sunday in November, 1957, with a relatively wellstaffed Sunday school -- and one scholar, a small boy named Dennis. But the rented sanctuary, a frame building belonging to a florist and nursery, soon became known in the community, and in 1962, the established church moved into its own building which now serves as a place of worship and service for many in the Covenant family. Seminary students assisting Dr. Ray

burn who served as temporary pastor until the church could call a fulltime man, included A1 Lutz, now pastor of the Shannon Forest church in Alabama, and Bob Palmer, NPM Missionary in a growing church in Coventry, Delaware. There were other Christian service opportunities for those *arly Covenanters -- the usual responsibilities of teaching, providing music for various churches, and positions for student pastors. Only a short while after Hazelwood became a familiar place and name to EP's, another group of students and faculty went to another part of the county and with the same dedication laid the foundation for the present Lafayette church. Always there are the short-lived opportunities for service which the Lord blesses, but a real joy and source of thanksgiving to Covenanters, past and present, are those works which they have had the privilege of helping to establish and of seeing to continue. MORE SENIORS Keith Ward - Keith has been a real addition to Covenant. In his sophomore year he was class president and the last two years has served as president of the John Knox Literary Society. Keith always manages to be in the right place (maybe wrong would be a better word) when musical talent is sought after. He has sung in the Men's Quartet in the past and is always involved in solo work as well. With his strong bass voice, he has been used richly by the Lord in many places. Next year Keith plans to attend seminary for at least one year, after which he views a master's degree in English. The seniors wish Keith well in the future and hope that his talents will be put to good use for the Lord. Judy Sanderson - To say that Judy has been active in student affairs would be an understatement. This year's task of serving as Tartan Editor and as Secretary-Treasurer of the Student Body is alone an achievement. But besides this she has been kept busy in the John Knox Literary Society (this year serving as critic), taking an active part in her class for four years, and serving as Bagpipe editor in her junior year. Judy has also found time to serve as a Sunday School teacher at The Covenant Church. Her future plans are somewhat indefinite. They range from a trip to Europe to working for the school at the Castle. But with almost a perfect A average while at Covenant, it won't be too long before some graduate school grabs Judy up. Whereever Judy will be, Covenant knows

that she will be a welcome addition and a real contribution to whatever she undertakes.. * NEW OFFICERS Juniors (class of *66) President - Lee Phillips V. 7 THE WORLD The hour was late The crowd moved slowly through the square. There seemed to be no gate And as they walked, they seemed to know now where. Some walked, some danced, some ate All seemed to search for something "Nothingness11 seemed to be their fate. For they did not know my King. Their faces seemed to say "What meaning does life hold? When's the beginning of today? Are we all of just one mold?" And yet I have the answer. Do I know what it be? I must tell them of the Saviour Who died for them as well as me. --Mary Lou Baseler CAMPUS DECLARED RELIEF AREA President Belz and Presidentelect Singleton called an emergency press conference at midnight last night and released a long-expected but dreadful statement. The decision was reached only after much consultation with highest adminis- trative officials. Covenant College has been declared a relief area due to the water-soaked state of the campus. The Blink has even been forced to hold a giant water-damage sale. President Johnson upon hearing the ill tidings remarked that the war on poverty would have to wait until the crisis at Covenant had washed over. Defense secretary McNamara was in the swim of things when he urged the war department to develop a giant anti-water balloon water balloon as well as a complete line of balloon war heads and balloon radar The general sentiment at the Pentagon seems to be "Nuts to the test-ban controversy.'" Indeed balloon warfare and defense mechanisms will ba a long awaited breakthrough in the field of military science. We can be nearly positive that due to their efficient spy network, the Russians will claim the water balloon as their brain child but we at Covenant know better. Care packages to the saturated campus will be flown in by helicopter. T H E B A G P I P E Weekly Student Publication of Covenant College, Box 68, St. Louis 41, Mo., VOL.
