1 Risen Savior Lutheran Church 2018 Key Events Oct. 7 Oktoberfest Oct. 13 Highway Clean-up Oct. 15 Blood Drive Oct. 28 Festival of the Reformation Oct. 31 Reformation Day Church Pastor Weinkauf pastor@risensaviorlcms.org Vicar Antonetti christopher.antonetti@ ctsfw.edu Art in the Lord s House Pastor Our last stained-glass windows and additional wood carvings perhaps will be coming soon The Lutheran Reformation did not simply destroy what came before it. The Confessions make it clear that we retain and preserve what we can according to the Gospel, as in these examples, which our congregations and Synod are still bound: We keep traditional liturgical forms, such as the order of the lessons, prayers, vestments, etc. (Apology XXIV). Those ancient customs should be kept which can be kept without sin or without great disadvantage. This is what we teach.we gladly keep the old traditions set up in the church because they are useful and promote tranquility the children chant the Psalms in order to learn. (Apology XV). The [Service] is retained among us and is celebrated with the greatest reverence. Almost all the customary ceremonies are also retained. (Augsburg Confession XXIV) In many cases this applied to the visual arts as well. While Great Britain and Switzerland bear the scars of Reformed iconoclasm, many churches in Lutheran Germany still display the beauty of medieval Christianity. Art is like worship. In a practical, utilitarian world it seems rather useless and perhaps even foolish, even a waste of money. Art is just pretty stuff, the things we hang up in our homes to decorate the plain wall. It has meaning only so long as we choose it to and it is something we discard when we are over it or when our interests or tastes change. At least that is the estimation of the world. We see in Scripture the Lord going to great lengths in cost, materials, craftsmen, design, to build a place where He comes to His people. Art in the church is not just pretty stuff we put in the church to decorate. Instead this art connects with the faith. Every symbol, carving, stained glass window or painting is a teacher and a voice that addresses us through our eyes in the same way words of the creed engage our mind. We see the faith with those eyes and we are instructed in that faith just as words teach our minds. But the goal here is not simply knowing for the sake of knowing but knowing so that we might believe and believing so that we might live the new life God has bestowed upon us in the living water that connects us to the death and resurrection of Christ. Faith sees not simply one dimensional but a message, a word, a voice that addresses us with the eternal Gospel and bids us to enter its mystery. Art is not sacrament but it might be said to be sacramental. It leads us past ourselves and our likes or preferences and into God's gracious actions that reveal His grace and favor. The art around the Church not only instructs but directs the wayward and wandering mind back to what is happening within the liturgy. What we offer the world is not beauty for the sake of beauty but beauty that befits the Word and serves its noble purpose of engaging us with the saving work of Christ. In fact, paintings and images can be fitting servants to the proclamation of God s Word, presenting the doctrine of Christ to the worshiper s eyes and further impressing it upon their heart. In preserving and upholding historic liturgical art, we sing with the Psalmist, One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in His temple (Psalm 27:4).

3 The Silesian Job Vicar Antonetti Johann Heermann ( ) was one of the great Lutheran pastors, hymn writers of the time right after the Reformation, commonly called the Age of Orthodoxy. Living in Silesia (now southwest Poland and part of Czechia), he experienced so much sorrow and anguish that one of his contemporaries called Heermann The Silesian Job, in reference to the righteous suffering Job of the Bible. At seventeen, Heermann began his pastoral training in Fraustadt under famous pastor, theologian Valerius Herberger, serving as a writing assistant. Heermann was known for his poetry and crowned Latin poet laureate of the Holy Roman Empire at the age of 23. Ordained in 1612, he became a popular preacher in Koeben, but within five years he would have to weather a plague in the region, a great fire in the city, and the death of his first wife. He remarried and had four children, but during the Thirty Years War ( ) Koeben was plundered four times by armed forces and hit again with plague in By 1634 Heermann was too sick to even read his own sermons and he retired in In 1640, his son, Samuel, converted to Roman Catholicism. Heermann wrote his son a heartfelt letter to return, and his son eventually did become Lutheran again in 1643, dying shortly thereafter. Heermann died in Heermann has six hymns in translation in our Lutheran Service Book. Jesus, Grant that Balm and Healing (LSB 421) is a Lenten hymn that focuses on the healing given by Jesus not only for pains of body and of mind, but to fight sin and temptation, and give comfort found in life and light and resurrection. Another Good Friday-type hymn O Dearest Jesus, What Law Hast Thou Broken (LSB 439) examines how the sinless Son of God must die in sadness; the sinful child of man may live in gladness, ultimately that despite our great weakness and sin Christ Surely has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. (Isaiah 53:4). If Your Beloved Son, O God (LSB 568) also focuses on Christ s atoning work, without which this poor wretched soul of mine in hell eternally would pine but true righteousness by faith I gain; Christ s work is my salvation. In O God, My Faithful God (LSB 696) Heerman, even in his sickness, confessed that God gives a healthy frame and strength to do what ever You command, my calling here fulfilling, but still the ultimately focuses on that final day when all the dead are waking. Feed Thy Children, God Most Holy (LSB 774) is a short hymn that confesses the Bread of Life (John 6) in Word and Sacrament sustains us in our afflictions. Finally, in O Christ, Our True and Only Light (LSB 839), we pray for those outside of the true doctrine that they all may be united with us again like Heermann s son, Samuel. Johann Heermann wrote more hymns than these six, but even these demonstrate how the Christian finds strength in affliction by trusting in Christ s death and resurrection. These treasures of the church are perfect to use in daily prayer and devotion. Sorrow in this life is temporary, For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth (Job 19:25).
