MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAPLAIN Dear friends, As I write these words we are preparing for one of the most colourful and tastiest services of the year here at Saint Alban s. The Pentecost service on Sunday 15 May Many Voices, One Spirit celebrates the wonderful diversity of our congregation. On that day, everyone is encouraged to come to Church in their national costume, while the readings and prayers will be in several different languages. After the service there will be an informal potluck lunch so please bring some of your national dishes to eat and share. It s all to remember the first Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit empowered the Disciples to communicate the Good News to diverse peoples and cultures in their own mother tongue. Just like the earliest Christians, we too are inspired (literally breathed upon or into ) by the Spirit of God and commissioned to step across divides, make connections and nurture community. In preparing for this special service I came across an evocative sentence from the Nobel Prize-winning Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer. This author, who died just over a year ago, once wrote: Each person is a half-open door leading to a room for everyone. What a great description of the human condition! On the one hand, we are half open doors or half-closed doors, depending on your perspective. Either way, the good news is that the door is ajar. What s more, when we risk entering another s space, or allow them into ours, we find that we are not diminished, but enlarged. We may even find on the other side of that encounter a new spaciousness and a shared home where there is room enough for all of us. It s what Pentecost Sunday and every Sunday should be about: creating a space where all are welcome and where unity in diversity is celebrated. You might say that our multinational Pentecost celebration is a foretaste and an appetising one at that of the way things ought to be; a preview of an as yet unrealised Heaven. By the way, you may be wondering about that Tomas Tranströmer poem. Do look it up online the title says it all: The Half-Finished Heaven. Darren. ~ 5 ~

CONFIRMATION 2016 Our Diocesan Bishop, The Right Reverend Dr Robert Innes, will be with us at Saint Alban s on Sunday 19 June. In what will be his first official visit here since his consecration in 2014, Bishop Robert will lead us in our Saint Alban s Day celebrations and also preside at a Service of Confirmation. Anyone considering confirmation should make contact with the Chaplain so that they can join the preparation classes for this important rite. Classes will be held on six consecutive Sundays, starting on Sunday 8 May at For the Church of England, Confirmation marks the point in the Christian journey when people affirm for themselves the faith into which they have been baptized. This affirmation is confirmed through prayer and the laying on of hands by the bishop. People can be confirmed at any age, so if you would like to explore the possibility of confirmation, please speak to the Chaplain. ~ 7 ~

ANNUAL CHURCH MEETING 2016 Our Annual Church Meeting (ACM) was held on Sunday 24 June at A wonderful new Annual Report was printed this year, edited and designed by our Chaplain. 50% of the cost was sponsored by our printers, Jespersen Tryg A/S, to whom we extended a warm vote of thanks. It contains reports and photographs from all who help to run our church. All are valuable and all were warmly thanked for their efforts. The Churchwardens were re-elected for another year it will be Claire s final and Chris s penultimate year of service. Two new Councilors were elected, Judy Fitzgerald and Anton Kongshøj Munch, who is also our new Environmental Officer. It was not possible to present audited accounts at this meeting, so please note that a Special Church Meeting will be called shortly to approve the accounts for It s also an opportunity for members of the congregation to be involved in the governance of Saint Alban s. Due to pressure of work and the need to travel to UK very frequently, Colin Hunt did not stand as Treasurer for a second year. We thank him for the work he has done for St Alban s over the last year or so and wish him all the very best. (see page 10). St Alban s congregation has increased by almost 20% over the last year or so, which means that we should increase representation on the Council by a further three people. With a council already at 22 people (12 elected members and 10 ex-officio members including ministry team and synod reps) it was generally felt that an increase would be unmanageable. An amendment presented by the Chaplain and Council was duly passed unanimously by the ACM where the Council will remain at 12 elected members each of whom serve a total of three years. The meeting was well attended and lasted just over 1 hour, after which the first brief Council meeting was held to agree meeting times and to elect various Council officers. Please continue to keep the work of the Council in your prayers. ~ 9 ~ CCC

GUARDIANS NEWS Rosemary Bohr, the coordinator of St Alban s team of Guardians, wrote last time that the 2016 season looks like being one of the busiest ever. For the first time the church was open over Easter and well before 1 st May as previously. Sunday afternoon Guardian is often John Shannon. Without counting Euros and other currencies, our Guardians have collected over Dkk 45,000 in donations in the first month. So not only were they busy, but their welcome was warm and visitors were generous. They were generous last year too. The churchwardens travelled to Hamburg to deposit the Euro coins from 2015 and returned with about Dkk 50,000 to add to last year s figure. It is lovely to see that the church is open on Saturdays as well to welcome Danes and tourists as they visit the area. The need for volunteers for these extra duties still exists so if you would like to spend a few hours a week greeting visitors and caring for our lovely church, please let Rosemary know. Tel: or rosemary.bohr@gmail.com The welcome visitors receive allows them to discover the real purpose of the church where they find a space for a few moments of prayer and contemplation. CCC WANTED TREASURER AND BOOKKEEPER If you are good with figures, enjoy keeping accounts and are familiar with internet banking and payments, this position is vacant. If you would like to offer your talents and time to St Alban s, the Chaplain, Churchwardens and Council would very much like to hear from you. If you have time to spare, and would like to be in at the heart of the running of the church, this is the job for you. If you know Danish it would make things easier for you If you are able to transport cash to the bank it would be even better. If you would like to take on just one of these two positions that is fine too. For more information, please ring Claire Clausen , Chris Parker on or the Chaplain on ~ 10 ~

This little poem was printed in a church Newsletter in UK by a lady who lived alone and had been very ill, and wanted to show how she appreciated all her friends: F R I E N D S Whenever you think that life is against you, not caring whether you live or die, remember at such times we all need our friends, and maybe a shoulder on which we can cry. We all have problems in our daily life, and sometimes it is good to share the hurt that we all suffer at times, with our friends - the people who care. It s been said that true friends are like gold, too precious and rare to ignore. So, if good fortune bestows such friends, then cherish them - don't let them go. Shared by Mary M who says: I think we have a lot of such friends at St. Alban's. *** ~ 11 ~

Sermon preached by the Chaplain on Sunday 6 March 2016, The Prodigal Father and the Two Lost Sons. Luke 15: 11, There was a man who had two sons. You know, on the face of it, the Parable of the Prodigal Son is frankly, pretty outrageous. Here we have the story of a young man by all accounts, a selfish, spoiled, self-centred brat who goes to his father and demands that he be given his inheritance now not when his Father has died, but now basically he wishes Father dead, you might say. And when his Father hands over the cash, this young man packs up his bags and heads off to a foreign land. A foreign land where as the translations we had this morning puts it he squanders his property in dissolute living you can probably imagine the sort of thing he blew the money on! And, when the money runs out, as it inevitably does, what does this scoundrel do? He decides to go home and ask his Dad for a job the cheeky so-and-so sits down and prepares a little speech which he hopes in what appears to me to be a pretty cynical move which he hopes will fool the old man into taking him back. But would you believe before this good for nothing can even get near his former home, before he can even get the lines of his ready-made apology out of his mouth, his Father runs to greet him. It turns out that the Father has been waiting for this very moment. The Father has been on the lookout day and night for his wayward son to come home. And so when that day comes, the Father throws his dignity aside, runs to his Son: embraces him and kisses him; orders that the best clothes in the house are put on him; orders that a ring is put on his finger and sandles on his feet. And to top it all off, the Father orders that the calf they were saving for a special celebration be killed and a party held. Wow! It is, by any ordinary standard, outrageous! And if that wasn t shocking enough, Jesus adds an extra character to the story an older brother. An older brother, who in stark contrast to his younger sibling has in his own words slaved all his life for his father, worked every hour God sends for his father. And this apparently upright, dutiful hard-working, sober, older brother is now expected to let bygones be bygones and join the party for the returned waster! Crazy stuff! Outrageous stuff! What are we to make of it? And what has it to do with us? The first and perhaps most important thing to say about this Parable is that I think we have mis-named it. To call it, as we usually do, The Parable of the Prodigal Son is, I think, to put the emphasis in the wrong place. It s worth remembering that Jesus never gave names, never gave titles to his Parables we added them later. And in this case I think we may have got it wrong. After all, the Parable does not begin with the sentence, There was once a young man who had a brother and a father. No, it begins, There was a man who had two sons. ~ 12 ~

This is not a Parable about one person only it s about three people it s about a family. It s about a Father a Father with two sons. It s about a Father who loves those two sons to distraction and longs for them to love each other too. In fact, you might say that if anyone is Prodigal in this Parable and remember prodigal means lavish, extravagant, wasteful, over the top, over-flowing if anyone is Prodigal, in that sense, in this Parable it is the Father and his over-flowing, prodigal, extravagant Love. So, I d like to suggest a new name. I d like to call this The Parable of the Prodigal Father and the Two Lost Sons. Yes, two lost sons. Because, it seems to me that both of the sons in this story are lost in one way or another. Both these guys are, in a sense, a long way from home. Both have forgotten who they are and whose children they are. Let me explain what I mean. In the case of the Younger Son his lostness is, of course, all too obvious. He literally travelled a long way from home, travelled a long way from where he should be. But notice something else in the text too. Notice how when he has as the text puts it come to his senses, he decides to go home and offer to be one of his Father s hired hands. In other words, he no longer sees himself as part of the family. That s very telling I think. He no longer sees himself as a son, a brother, a child of the Father. The most he can hope for, or so he thinks, is to become one of the staff, one of the workers, a hired hand. It seems to me that part of the younger son s tragedy is that in his sin and lostness and confusion he lost sight of who he is and more importantly he lost sight of the nature of his Father s love. Because the truth is that his Father s not looking for a hired hand, a worker, a slave he is looking for his son back, his beloved son, his beloved child back. And, in a strange sort of way, it s something similar with the Older Son. Oh yes, outwardly the Older Son appears to be the dutiful one. He appears to be the one who has followed the rules and kept to the straight and narrow. But although the Older Son may have in a literal sense stayed at home, he too I think has travelled a long way from his true identity. Notice two details in the text. First, notice what the Older Son says to his Father when he s asked to come to the feast. For years I have slaved for you, he says. Yes, slaved not worked with you, not worked alongside you, but slaved for you. It s as if the Older Son has been so consumed by self-righteousness anger that he too rather like his brother has forgotten that he s part of a family. He s forgotten that he s not actually a slave. He s a son, a beloved son, a child of the Father. And, secondly notice and this is my favourite detail in the whole parable notice how the Older Son describes his brother: He says to his Father, This son of yours has come home. In other words, he s saying, We re not a family. This reprobate is no relation of mine. He may be your son, but he is not my brother. To which the Father replies gently but powerfully notice what he says this brother of yours was dead and has come to ~ 13 ~

life he was lost and has been found this brother of yours. In other words, we are a family. He is your brother. You are both my children. And I want you both of you to come home, I want you both of you back together because you are both my beloved sons. There it is the Parable of the Prodigal Father and the two lost sons. And the question now is, of course, what has that got to do with us? As I see it, it s like this: we are like the two lost sons. Some of us are rather more like the older brother and some of us are rather more like the younger brother but we are the two lost sons. We wander far from our true home, we forget who we are, we forget who s we are and the results, quite often, are not pretty. Let me give you an example. This example comes from a book I ve been reading lately called Accidental Saints. It was written by a Lutheran Pastor in the United States called Nadia Bolz Weber. In the book Nadia quotes a FaceBook post written by a member of her congregation called Jeff. Let me read you part of it. Jeff writes: I struggle with despising people and not even for very good reasons. That guy in the massive pickup truck who s tail-gaiting me, the smarmy business types eating hundred dollar lunches, the horrifically overconfident mom sharing her conversation with the entire coffee shop. I somehow find the energy to mentally eviscerate such people every single day. I m a hater. But he goes on: I ve been looking for a way to break out of this ridiculous cycle, something to help me see others as more than caricatures and I found it as I served some of you communion on a recent Sunday morning. I looked at you, gave you bread, and said, Child of God, the body of Christ broken for you. Child of God. Child of God. We are all children of God and we ve been given the authority, even the duty to declare that to each other. And so when I find myself on the road with another annoying driver tail-gating me I simply bless them. I look in their eyes, hold up the bread and say, Child of God. Beautiful! So, here s what we re going to do today. Here s what we re going to do to remind us who we are and who s we are. I m going to use those words for each person at the giving of communion Child of God, the body of Christ given for you. So when you come up to receive the bread and wine or a blessing at these altar rails I hope you will hear those words as the words of the Prodigal Father calling you home, assuring you of his extravagant love and over-flowing forgiveness. And what s more, I hope that as you look along the line you will see kneeling beside you other sons and daughters of that very same Father your brothers and sisters other precious children of God equally beloved, equally forgiven, equally welcomed home. Luke 15: 11, There was a man who had two sons. There is a God who loves all God s children to distraction and longs for us to love each other too. In Jesus name. Amen. ~ 14 ~

CELEBRATING HOLY WEEK AT ST ALBANS PALM SUNDAY Palm Sunday begins outside and we process into the church singing Ride on. Ride on in majesty. Little Sigrid (rt) has her first ever palm cross. HM Ambassador (mid) with choir and congregation as their palm crosses are blessed before the Palm Sunday service. Though dry the weather was grey and cold, as Easter was early this year. Truly sustainable, Phil Clark cut up the old Christmas tree for firewood for the Easter Eve brazier that symbolises the fire in the courtyard of Pontius Pilate s house where Peter denied Jesus three times before the cock crew. ~ 16 ~

NEW ENVIRONMENTAL OFFICER AND COUNCILLOR My name is Anton Kongshøj-Munch. I am 27 years old, married to Sigrid, who plays the viola wonderfully, and father to Thyra, who is just wonderful (as is my wife). We live just north of Køge, where we moved shortly after getting Thyra, in order to get more room and more nature in our vicinity. During the summer, we plan to spend most of the time in our new colony garden, a wonderful mess that we bought and now enjoy working in! In the summer of 2015 I finished my Bachelor s degree in theology at the University of Copenhagen. After that I started on my Master, but shortly after, I burned out on academic theology. Not that I didn t enjoy the subjects, theology of nature and prophesy in the Old Testament, but the way of just reading, discussing, disagreeing, writing and so forth just didn t suit me. I decided that I needed something for my hands - something where I could work on what I had only been discussing before - and so I started my education as a gardener this April. The path of Ora et Labora that flows so naturally from my passion for prayer and Bible study combined with the work of plants and earth, and it suits me just fine! At the same time, I found that I needed a change of scenery in my church life, and since I have always been very inspired by Anglican theology, I decided to try and go to Saint Alban s. And I have not been disappointed (as you might have guessed)! The way that a passion for God s creation is so beautifully weaved into the liturgies, the beauty of the Holy Communion, the inspiring sermons, the openness I have been welcomed with - it has all contributed to my sense of feeling at home in Saint Alban s in a way that I am very grateful for! As the new environmental officer, my first order of business is really to just learn more about the congregation, the facilities and so on, in order to figure out where and how to start the work in the best way possible. God willing, you will hear a lot more from me, and I will hear from you, and I look forward to get to know you all a lot better! ~ 19 ~

SPONSORED SONGS OF PRAISE On 9th October at 16:00 (Second Sunday Service), we will be holding a very special service at which seven of your favourite hymns will be sung by the choir and congregation. The service will be led by our Chaplain. All you have to do is vote for your favourite. The seven hymns which get the most votes will be those sung at this service. This is a fundraising event in aid of our church, so each vote costs 10 kr, but you can vote for the same hymn as many times as you like (so 10 votes would cost 100 kr) or many different hymns. You can vote for any hymn in our Common Praise hymn book. Why are we telling you about this now? So that you can put this date for this fun, fund-raising event in your diary! Voting will take place in August and September and the count to determine the winning hymns will be at the end of September. ~ 20 ~

HEAVENLY DAYS IN COPENHAGEN 5th-8 th MAY 16 Heavenly Days is a festival with room for reflection, space for opinions and opportunity for open conversation. The history behind Heavenly Days: In the summer of 1968 a small church festival was quickly organised in Denmark. Inspired by a long established festival in Germany, Deutsche Kirchen Tage it was called Danish Church Days. Today the German church days festival takes place every two years, receives hundreds of thousands of visitors, and is an event that no German politician fails to attend. The concept of the German church days was developed by Reinold von Thadden- Trieglaff while he was a prisoner during World War II. As a reaction to the fact that circles in the Lutheran Church had collaborated with Hitler s regime, this trained lawyer wanted to create an event that would prevent Lutheran Christians from ever again allowing themselves to be seduced by Nazism. Behind the church day idea there is thus a recognition of the need for critical selfreflection, and the desire that the church engage in society and work for dialogue, peaceful coexistence and increased social involvement from the Christian community. Church days are shared ecclesiastical events where most Christian churches participate: the national church, the Catholic Church, the Orthodox churches, migrant and free churches. With Heavenly Days in Copenhagen, religious dialogue is of central importance too. Since 1968, Danish church days have taken place every three years alternately in the country s major cities. This is the first time they are being organized in the Danish capital. Vision and ambition for Heavenly Days Our desire is to create an open conversation where anyone, regardless of their views on Christianity, faith or religion, will be able to join in. Heavenly Days is for all curious souls. Heavenly Days is an experiment based on respect. Our ambition is to create experiences that can be felt, to create a festival where we explore together which role faith, church, Christianity and religion play and will play in future society and culture, as well as in the life of each individual. We would like to provide timely, relevant and fruitful conversations for all who are curious about religious, ethical and existential matters. Whether you believe in God, are a Christian or just confused does not matter. It is the conversation that is the main focus. 22 Riddle: What does St Alban s lack that everyone needs? Answer: Toilets! This is finally about to be rectified. An Amenities Team was formed after last year s Council Away day where Claire flagged up (again) the need for more toilets and that we need to be compliant with municipality/state regulations that every public place should endeavour to cater for those with disabilities or impaired mobility. The team consists of the Churchwardens, Philip Davies, Peter Fitzgerald and Nigel Rowley. Three reputable architectural companies were contacted to tender for initial, outline sketches and prices and one was accepted. He is Ole Drachmann, formerly from Erik Møller s Tegnstue. He retired but quickly decided to continue and started his own studio with his architect daughter, Emilie Drachmann. Emilie is doing her PhD in church architecture from England, so is very motivated to help us. Sketches were produced in December which are very much in keeping with the aesthetics of the church and will be acceptable to Kastellet, who have partial control of this historic site. Phil Davies had a meeting with Ole Drachmann and the authorities who seemed happy for us to go ahead. At its last meeting before the ACM, the Council approved an amount to cover the cost of detailed drawings, which can be used to gain final and formal permission from the municipality and kulturhistorisk department of Kastellet et al! The sketches are available to see, but briefly: the path round the back of the church to the existing porch will be smoothed for wheelchairs. The steps to the crypt will be maintained and the toilet block will be built to the left of them as one goes down. The existing toilet at the bottom of the spiral staircase will be removed and the tea kitchen enlarged. There will be three toilets one with disability access, large enough to turn a wheelchair. There will be a covered entrance to the toilet block and steps into the crypt so access will be almost the same. We will bring you updates in this magazine so watch this space because a fundraising effort will be needed and very soon we will need everyone s help!, and lots of these!!! CCC ~ 22 ~
