CHURCH STAFF & CONTACT NUMBERS Rev. Kevin Koenig, Senior Pastor Rev. Thomas Boeck, Associate Pastor Craig Greusel, Music Director John Davis, Keyboard Specialist Larry Carlen, Facilities Manager Betsy Francis, Office Manager Nancy Piper, Technical Administrator Claudia Sondersorge -Trejos, Receptionist THE SHIP OF THE CHURCH For Christians, since the days of the apostles, THE SHIP has been a symbol for the Christian Church. The mast and yardarm form a simple CROSS (in wood) which stands for Jesus who saved us by giving Himself on a cross that we might be forgiven. The CHI RHO (in metal) is a combination of the first two Greek letters of the name Christ, meaning "The Anointed One" or "The Messiah." THE WAVES symbolize the troubles and difficulties of life on earth. THE SAILS are filled with wind, a symbol of the Holy Spirit, which empowers the Church. Thus, the Christian Church, under the Cross of Christ carries the faithful safely across the troubled seas of life to heaven. Before Worship ~ Speak to God (Meditate) After Worship ~ Speak to Friends (Socialize) As we come together for worship, the cross of Christ is before us. We choose, you and I, to worship in a place and with people for whom the cross is both the sign of salvation and the sign of Christ in our lives. A special Welcome to our guests today. May you find grace and blessing in the time we spend together. If you are looking for a church home, please speak to the Pastor, Associate Pastor, the Lay Minister for the day, or an Usher. We would be most pleased to share with you ways in which you might become a regular part of our Christian fellowship. 2

FRIENDSHIP PADS are located in each row. Please fill one out, pass it down the row and back again, then returning to the center. This will help you to learn the names of those worshiping with you. HOLY COMMUNION WHAT WE BELIEVE In this Sacrament, Jesus gives us Himself, His true Body and Blood as we receive the bread and wine. On the night He was betrayed and before He was put to death, Jesus celebrated this Meal with His disciples assuring us that each time we receive it, we are again remembering His death and receiving the full benefits of His grace, namely the forgiveness of sin. In 1 Corinthians 11, St. Paul says that we should examine ourselves ahead of time. We can do so each time by asking ourselves these basic questions: Do I acknowledge the fact that I am indeed a sinner and that I am sorry for my sin? Do I believe that Jesus Christ is my Savior from all sin? Am I trusting in Jesus promise that I receive full pardon and strength through this Holy Meal? Finally, with the Lord s help, will I seek to amend my life and live in conformity with His Holy Will? Jesus Himself invites baptized followers, who believe in Him as their Lord and Savior, who recognize their sinful condition and who seek His forgiveness, to come to His Table to receive His precious Body and Blood. May the Lord bless your personal reception as well as your daily living under His power and blessing. Should you have questions, please see the Pastor, Associate Pastor or Lay minister prior to the worship service. For those who prefer, white grape juice is in the center of the tray. There are also gluten free wafers by informing a distributing Host. For those who may have difficulty coming to the front, please inform an usher so that the Sacrament may be brought to you. OUR STAINED GLASS WINDOWS depict in design an upward motion and the blue-green colors are inviting to experience God s mystery. Light and water are the most precious elements we need to live. They are essential, as is God. Through the waters of Baptism we are invited into God s grace and through Jesus we see His way and truth. 3

AS WE GATHER While the secular calendar won t switch to 2019 for another month, the Church Year begins anew today. Advent is a season of waiting for God to come to us and celebrating the various ways in which God does indeed come to us. Today we remember Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem. We lift our voices in praise for our King who comes to us in humility. We unite our hearts to His humble example, seeking to share with the world the good news of His kingdom and His coming. RINGING OF THE BELLS PRELUDE John Davis PREPARATION The congregational responses in this service are printed in BOLD 4

OPENING HYMN The Advent of Our King LSB 331; v. 1-4 Tune and text: Public domain OPENING SENTENCES Alleluia! Christ is coming soon! He is coming soon indeed! Alleluia! God came to Adam and Eve after they had sinned. He clothed them, hiding their shame. God came to Israel when they were enslaved in Egypt. He delivered them out of the house of slavery. Christ was born into our world. He cast out demons, healed our diseases, and preached good news to the poor. Christ came into Jerusalem on a donkey. And He died and rose again for us and for our salvation. Christ promised He will come again. We wait for His return and the resurrection of the dead. Alleluia! Christ is coming soon! He is coming soon indeed! Alleluia! 5

LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH On the four Sundays in Advent, we light a new candle each week. We mark the four candles with these four words: hope, peace, joy, and love. Jesus Christ is the hope of the nations. We wait for the Lord, and in His Word do we hope. HYMN O Come, O Come, Emmanuel LSB 357; v.1 Tune and text: Public domain CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS In the season of Advent, we prepare for Jesus to come. We await the celebration of His birth at Christmas. We remember His arrival in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. We long for His glorious return. As we wait, we consider how unworthy we are to have Jesus in our presence. Silence for reflection. 6

Heavenly Father, we confess that our faith has been lacking. We have not abounded in love for one another or for You. Our hearts are filled with blame and shame, with corruption and conceit. Forgive us, strengthen our faith, and purify our hearts. Jesus not only comes as an infant at Christmas and in glory at His return, but He also comes to you in words of forgiveness and life. Hear these words of forgiveness, for they are from Christ Himself: As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Stir up Your power, O Lord, and come, that by Your protection we may be rescued from the threatening perils of our sins and saved by Your mighty deliverance; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. WORD FIRST LESSON Jeremiah 33:14 16 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: The LORD is our righteousness. 7

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SECOND LESSON 1 Thessalonians 3:9 13 For what thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God, as we pray most earnestly night and day that we may see you face to face and supply what is lacking in your faith? Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you, and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you, so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God VERSE Prepare the Royal Highway LSB 343; v. 1 & 2 Tune: Public domain Text: 1978 Lutheran Book of Worship. 9 HOLY GOSPEL Luke 19:28 40 The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the nineteenth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, saying, Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, Why are you untying it? you shall say this: The Lord has need of it. So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, Why are you untying the colt? And they said, The Lord has need of it. And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. As he was drawing near already on the way down the Mount of Olives the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, Teacher, rebuke your disciples. He answered, I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. (When the cross returns to its place, you may be seated) SPECIAL MUSIC G. Paul Larson SERMON Pastor Tom Boeck 9

APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. OFFERING AND VOLUNTARY OFFERTORY HYMN Let the Vineyards Be Fruitful LSB 955 Text and tune: 1978 Lutheran Book of Worship. Used by permission: LSB Hymn License no

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Lord Jesus Christ, come to those who do not know You, those who have rejected You, and those who are straying from You. Unite them to Your glorious throne and dwell in their hearts. Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! Lord Jesus Christ, come to those who are lonely and in need of Your presence. Come to the homeless, the unemployed, the underemployed, the homebound, the mentally ill, those who are in transition, and anyone else who experiences the pain of loneliness. Remind them of Your incarnation and lead them to Your Church, where we bear one another s burdens. Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! Lord Jesus Christ, come to those who are oppressed and at the mercy of others. Rescue those who are suffering, abused, neglected, and hated. Comfort them with Your tender presence and love. Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! Lord Jesus Christ, come to those who are sick, injured, and recovering, especially Buzz, Julie, Laura, Barbara, Joyce, Gus, June, Betty, Bob, Cindy, Lee, Joyce, Linda, Larry, Bob, June, Jerry, Barbara, Annaleigh, Anne, Neal, Hilda, Mary and Keri. Strengthen them with Your healing hand and with Your unwavering presence. Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! Lord Jesus Christ, come to those who grieve and mourn the death of loved ones, especially for the friends and families of Louise Winnai and Liz Poletti. Comfort them with the hope of resurrection life that is ours in Christ Jesus. Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! Lord Jesus Christ, come to those who rejoice and direct their praise and thanksgiving to You. Grant that their rejoicing lead us all to praise Your name. Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! 11

Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! Lord Jesus Christ, come to Your broken Church with the gifts of reconciliation and restoration. Unite Your people once again so that we enjoy fellowship rather than fractured division. Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! Lord Jesus Christ, send Your Holy Spirit to inspire faith in You, grant that our missionaries in East Africa, especially Krista Young, be filled with holy boldness to share the gospel with those who desperately need it. Protect our Christian brothers and sisters in the face of persecution so that they may continue to praise You, saying: Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! Lord Jesus Christ, We praise Your Holy Name and rejoice with those celebrating birthdays and anniversaries, and others who rejoice around us, that we too may see the many blessings You have given us. Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! Into Your hands, Lord Jesus, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your ever-present mercy. Amen. DISCIPLES PRAYER Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen SACRAMENT 12
