Lynnfield Catholic Collaborative Home of Saint Maria Goretti Parish Our Lady of the Assumption Parish Our Lady of the Assumption School Annual Report
Letter from the PASTOR Fall 2016 Dear friends of the Lynnfield Catholic Collaborative, I am so pleased to present our Annual Report for the past year. As you can see in the numbers, prose, and images in these pages, we continue to make progress in becoming one Catholic community of Jesus disciples, comprised of two parishes and a parochial school. Our third year as a Collaborative was definitely a year of growth in many facets of our life together, such as our participation in ministries, activities and events; the level of inter-parish cooperation and fellowship; the faith formation of our children and adults; our financial performance; and the integration of our school in parish life. We are making strides in our efforts to implement our bold Pastoral Plan, thanks to the dedicated service of our Team members, and the vital contribution of so many parishioners. When you have a chance to review this report, I ask you to do two things: first, pray that the Lord who has begun this good work in us will bring it to completion; and second, think about what you can do to help us grow in our mission of drawing many others to Christ and our Catholic community. I wish to express my gratitude to all those who helped to put this report together, especially Caterina Benitez, our Director of Finance and Operations, and Marie Lagman, our Director of Media Ministry. May God continue to grant success to the work of our hands! Blessings to all of you, Fr. Paul 2

Fiscal Year 2016 Financial HIGHLIGHTS As detailed in the accompanying annual reports, Our Lady of Assumption and Saint Maria Goretti parishes had mixed results for the fiscal year ending June 30, St. Maria Goretti finished the year with a loss of $42,362, while Our Lady had a positive net income of $51,943 due largely to a bequest from a generous and devoted parishioner. It is also worth noting that both churches enjoyed an increase in Offertory income and a decrease in expenses a trend we hope will continue in the fiscal year The coming fiscal year of 2017 looks promising for both parishes, mainly due to the incredible support from the Archdiocese of Boston. At the outset of the 2017 fiscal year, the Archdiocese has increased its support for Saint Maria Goretti in various ways; including establishment of a line of credit, a reduction in 2017 tithe, and personnel support that has enabled the formation of a development committee. The committee, in particular, will greatly benefit the Lynnfield Catholic Collaborative in the years to come. Despite the financial loss in the fiscal year 2016, Saint Maria Goretti was fortunate to have sufficient reserves to remain debt free. However, its reserves finished the year on June 30, 2016 with just $25,835 remaining. With the small amount remaining in reserve, and assuming Offertory income is not sufficient to cover the fiscal year 2017 expenses, the parish will utilize the established line of credit from the Archdiocese. Our Lady of the Assumption School had a wonderful year, showing a net income of $123,000. A large portion of that $50,000 came from a parishioner who was moved by the play the 8 th graders put on, the Passion of Our Lord on Good Friday, and wanted to show her appreciation with a gift to the school. The reduced expenses in fiscal year 2016 were primarily the result of the mild winter and a significant decrease in our snow removal expenses. We also benefitted from continued efforts as a collaborative, to combine resources, which resulted in an expense decrease of 8% at Our Lady of Assumption and 13% at Saint Maria Goretti. 4

Individual Paths, Same JOURNEY Go in peace! The journey you are making is under the eye of the LORD. -- Judges 18:6 The Church is not just a building you enter once a week. We are your friends, neighbors, and family who rejoice with you in celebrations, offer our condolences in times of loss, pray for you when you are sick or troubled, and share in all the ups and downs of everyday life. So whether you are a newly Confirmed teenager burdened with the independence of figuring out how your faith fits into your life a young parent trying to prioritize your children s Faith Formation amidst modern-day scheduling pressures a frazzled member of the sandwich generation beseeching the Holy Spirit to give you the strength and patience to care for your children and for your aging parents an empty-nester finding guidance and comfort in prayer as you face transitions or a retired person who finally has some time to become more involved in ministry, we want to meet you where you are and help you grow closer to God. For although we all travel our unique, individual paths, we are all on the same journey. 12
It s not just about the NUMBERS... Annual reports are about presenting you with numbers, and we have plenty of those. But the numbers only tell part of the story. The real story is how our Catholic faith and parish family are with us through every step of our journeys. As a family joyfully welcomes their precious baby into the world, we also rejoice in welcoming these little ones into God s family and into our faith community. This year, our parishes initiated 95 beautiful babies into our Catholic family, with 41 baptisms at OLA and 54 at SMG. It is through Holy Communion that we become intimately united with Jesus Christ and we express our union with all Catholics throughout the world who share the same beliefs. In April and May of 2016, 69 children at OLA and 44 children at SMG received their First Holy Communion. St. Maria Goretti First Communicants, April 30 and May 1, 2016 OLA First Communicants, April 30 and May 1,
Through the Sacrament of Confirmation, the faithful are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and are strengthened in their Christian life. 130 young adults at OLA and 51 at SMG were anointed as soldiers of Christ, charged to fight the war between good and evil, light and darkness. SMG Confirmation, October 18, 2015 As Catholics, we believe that marriage comes as a gift from the hand of God. This year, both OLA and SMG celebrated 4 weddings, with each couple entering a covenant in which their love was sealed by God s love. Just as we welcomed them into our family of faith at Baptism, we were there to commend our spiritual brothers and sisters to God s eternal embrace. This year, funerals were held for 59 parishioners from OLA and 19 from SMG. Mass of Remembrance, November 8,
Gathering TOGETHER And throughout the year, we worked, laughed, socialized, learned, and worshipped together. For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst. Matthew 18:20 SMG s Grade 4 Faith Formation students made posters of their favorite saints and presented them to the congregation on All Saints Day, November 1, OLA s Faith Formation students also dressed up and made posters of their favorite saints for a Saints Parade on November 1, Children s Liturgy of the Word at SMG, November 8, These sessions, that teach the Word of God to children in terms they can understand, have become so popular that there are often 40 children who participate. 15
Cheverus Awards were presented to SMG s Jim McGovern and OLA School s Sister Josephine Harty at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, November 29, Medal recipients include laypeople, religious, and deacons, and are chosen for their service to the Church and God s people. During SMG s annual Santa Visit, Fr. Tony Luongo explained the true story of St. Nicholas, the children learned about lighting a candle for a special intention, donations were collected for the Lynn Girls and Boys Club, everyone indulged in Dunkin donuts and hot chocolate (once again, generously provided by Maryann Coletta), and of course the highlight of the event a visit from Santa Claus! 16
Both OLA and SMG Faith Formation students presented Epiphany Pageants on January 3, Family Pasta Dinner at St. Maria Goretti, February 27, 2016 Our Collaborative Music Ministry raised our mid-winter spirits with a concert at SMG on February 21, From Darkness to Light featured Holly Cameron, Jayson Cote, Jim Dennis, Grace Ferri, Lewis Flores, Andrea Gagnon, Stephanie Scarcella, and David Pihl. 17
As part of SMG s Lenten Mission, Dr. Celia Sirois and Naomi Towvim gave an informative and thought-provoking explanation of the Jewish Seder Supper and its connection to our Easter Vigil, at SMG on March 13, OLA s Lenten Mission theme was Transformed by God s Mercy, February 15-17, 2016, and included a presentation by Dr. Aldona Lingertat on The Pope Francis Effect, a viewing of the movie Little Boy, and a workshop on Funeral Liturgy and Catholic Cemetery Pre-planning. Keeping up appearances OLA s roof got a powerwashing, Fall 2015 Before After OLA s ceiling tiles were replaced, Summer 2016 Before After During 18
Our Collaborative Youth Ministry, led by Steve Gannon, Director of Youth Faith Formation, put their faith into action by participating in Common Cathedral s City Reach program, March 4, SMG s Grade 3 Faith Formation students hosted the annual children s Stations of the Cross and Lenten Supper on March 18, 2016 Volunteers from SMG and our Collaborative Youth Ministry prepared and served meals at My Brother s Table in Lynn, March 22,
SMG s annual May Procession was held on Mother s Day, Sunday, May 8, First Communicants were invited to wear their beautiful white outfits once more and lead all the other children in the procession. Grace Elliott crowned the statue of the Blessed Mother, and the rest of the children carried pink carnations. We should never forget that we are also part of our greater community of Lynnfield and the surrounding towns. Our pastor, Fr. Paul Ritt, lead the invocation and benediction at Lynnfield s (rained out) Memorial Day parade on May 30, On April 24, 2016, SMG parishioners came out in force to wish our friend and seminarian, Carlos Gomez Pineda, well as he left our parish to be ordained as a Transitional Deacon in the Diocese of Des Moines on June 3. 20
On June 19, 2016, four Boy Scouts were bestowed the Parvuli Dei Award at OLA. The Parvuli Dei (Children of God) emblem encourages scouts to discover the presence of God in their daily lives as members of their families, parishes, and communities. Three Moms & Tots arts and crafts sessions, led by SMG parishioner Diana Sechrist, kept our littlest parishioners busy and happy during the summer months. Alexis McDuffee, OLA Faith Formation Coordinator for Grades K-6, brought Vacation Bible School back to OLA! From July 11-15, 2016, thirty children played, prayed, learned, laughed and oh yeah.. ate popsicles! 21

Where are our paths leading us? We hope to transform SMG s Sunday 5:00 pm Mass into a Youth Mass. The Mass is now part of the Confirmation class, we are recruiting youth singers and musicians, and we expect our teenage parishioners to be active leaders and visible participants in the Mass. For more information, please contact Steve Gannon, Director of Youth Faith Formation at sgannon@ola-smg.org. We have both new and familiar faces in Faith Formation. Bethany Kilroy is the new SMG Coordinator for Grades 1-6. A mom of four with three sons currently in the program, Bethany has volunteered her time in the past as a catechist and a lector. Kate McGrath is providing OLA s Faith Formation administrative support. Kate previously worked at a nearby Collaborative and is currently pursuing her Masters in Social Work at Simmons College. Alexis McDuffee is continuing in her role as OLA s Coordinator for Grades K-6. Steve Gannon continues as the Coordinator for the Grades 7-8 program at both SMG and OLA, and is now the Confirmation Coordinator at both SMG and OLA. Steve also runs our Youth Ministry program. We are so grateful to have these talented individuals on our team! Speaking of communication, we ve started a new Media Ministry to help keep us moving forward and connecting on today's communications platforms. We re looking for youth and adult volunteers who have a passion for photography and video an interest in social media a talent for writing a skill for graphic design. Community service and internship opportunities available. For more information, please contact Marie Lagman at mlagman@ola-smg.org. To reach out to young families, particularly those whose children have not yet started in our Faith Formation programs, SMG is introducing social events for young parents. As the future of our parish community, they need to be welcomed and have the opportunity to build relationships with each other. For more information, please contact Donna Hegan, Pastoral Associate, at dhegan@ola-smg.org. Also as part of our initiative to make young families feel welcome in our churches, we have made Toddler Bags little bags filled with activities to occupy our younger parishioners available at both churches. A letter has also been placed in the pews of the churches and sent out to our list to reinforce our desire to celebrate the presence of families at Mass. Parents are not only their children s first catechists, they are also their first evangelizers. 24
Where are our paths leading us? Our new Ministry of Consolation will assist in providing bereavement and spiritual support to parishioners who have experienced the death of a family member or friend. Volunteers are needed to send notes and cards to the bereaved. Please contact Maggie Coolican at or moc@ola-smg.org. To empower our Youth Ministry students to determine the kinds of activities they would find enjoyable and enriching, we re establishing a Youth Ministry Advisory Board for Grades 7 and 8, and a Youth Ministry Advisory Board for Grades 9 and 10. And since we always need our parents to be present, to model, to give direction, and to support all our youth activities, we are also establishing a Parent Advisory Board for Youth Ministry. If interested in participating in any of these boards, please contact Stephen Gannon, Director of Youth Faith Formation, at sgannon@ola-smg.org. Our Collaborative Parish Pastoral Council, Collaborative Facilities Committee, OLA and SMG Parish Finance Councils, Vocations Committee, Development Committee, and Pastoral Plan Writing Team continue meet and work for the well-being, sustainability, and growth of our individual parishes and Collaborative. If you would like to share your talents on any of these councils, please contact Caterina Benitez, Director of Finance and Operations, at cbenitez@ola-smg.org. Our Collaborative is in the initial planning stage to upgrade and integrate the audio-visual capabilities at both SMG and OLA. The community-minded generosity of Everett Bank has given us a solid starting point, but we will need the support of all our parishioners to fulfill our plans. If you have experience in A/V equipment, installation, or system design, please contact Caterina Benitez, Director of Finance and Operations, at cbenitez@ola-smg.org. Is there something you wish our parishes offered but currently don t? Then you have an idea for a new ministry! If the Holy Spirit keeps whispering in your ear that you need to share your gift for something if you know in your heart that there are people who would benefit from a ministry you could initiate if you have seen a club/outreach project/social event at another parish that you would like to have at our Collaborative contact Donna Delahanty, Director of Parish Ministries, at ddelahanty@ola-smg.org. 25

Footprints in the Sand By Mary Stevenson One night I had a dream. I dreamed that I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, one belonging to me, and the other to the Lord. When the last scene of my life flashed before me, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. I noticed that many times along the path of my life, there was only one set of footprints. I also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in my life. This really bothered me and I questioned the Lord about it; Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you d walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don t understand why when I needed you most you would leave me. The Lord replied: My precious child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.
