1 THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 18, 2018 But in those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven (Mark ) The Triumph of Christianity Over Paganism Gustave Dore (Public domain)

The Catholic Widow & Widowers of Dutchess & Putnam Counties will have their Annual Thanksgiving dinner meeting on Nov. 20, 2018 at 6:00pm. The meeting will be held in the Parish meeting Room at St. Kateri Church, 1925 Route 82, Lagrangeville, NY Cost is $ For more information please contact Rose Mary Redmond at PASTORS CORNER Post Mass Noise As a reminder, we should do our best to depart Mass in relative silence. There is an inordinate amount of talking going on in the church after Mass. Some people like to pray after receiving our Lord in the Eucharist. Please reserve all socializing for outside the church. I d appreciate it. Advent Changes 1) Beginning the first Sunday in Advent and continuing thereafter on a regular basis, we will be praying the Rosary before every Sunday Mass including the 5:00 PM Vigil on Saturday. In doing so we will prepare ourselves spiritually to enter into the great mystery of the Holy Sacrifice of Mass. Look at it as if the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Mother, is calling us home for supper! All music practice will now take place in the Fr. Moriarity Center prior to Mass. 2) Beginning the first Friday in December, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be extended each First Friday of the Month until 8 PM. Confessions will be offered 6:457:30 on that day as well. ON THE USE OF PSYCHICS, PALM READERS, TAROT CARDS, AND OTHER OCCULTIC PRACTICES The Catechism of the Catholic Church states the following: Divination and magic 2115 God can reveal the future to his prophets or to other saints. Still, a sound Christian attitude consists in putting oneself confidently into the hands of Providence for whatever concerns the future and giving up all unhealthy curiosity about it. Improvidence, however, can constitute a lack of responsibility All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to "unveil" the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one's service and have a supernatural power over others - even if this were for the sake of restoring their health - are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion. These practices are even more to be condemned when accompanied by the intention of harming someone, or when they have recourse to the intervention of demons. Wearing charms is also reprehensible. Spiritism often implies divination or

6 magical practices; the Church for her part warns the faithful against it. Recourse to so-called traditional cures does not justify either the invocation of evil powers or the exploitation of another's credulity Superstition is a departure from the worship that we give to the true God. It is manifested in idolatry, as well as in various forms of divination and magic. I recently read that there is an increasing number of people in our nation who are involving themselves with divination arts and occult practices. How sad that so many have lost hope and love for Jesus Christ, his Church and the offer of eternal salvation that only he can redeem us towards. But it has also come to my attention that some are questioning the use of divination arts as being sanctioned or accepted by the Catholic Church. This is false. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Over the centuries the Church has been blessed with a plethora of mystic saints. We recall such names as Margaret Mary Alacoque, Padre Pio, John Vianney, Juan Diego, Bernadette Soubirous, the Fatima children, Faustina Kowalska, Rose of Lima, the children at Knock, Maximillian Kolbe, and many others who ve experienced unique premonitions about events, or have seen apparitions of the Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and other saints and angels. In all these cases, the saints have humbled themselves to the authority of the Church to determine what is a true apparition or a mystical encounter with the preternatural. Under no circumstances has the Catholic Church ever condoned or accepted the divining arts such as Tarot cards, mediums, psychics, horoscopes, palm readers, Ouija boards, Reiki, séances, Wiccan, white and black magic, Satanism, Santeria, or any form of occult practices or divination arts. In fact, all of these offend God. In many cases people practice these arts out of ignorance, believing that they will help them or give a deeper insight to their lives. This is an illusion and therein lies the danger. We must always be on our guard against those things that may seem good on the outside, but in fact are not in the end. And in some cases, culpability can be lessened to a certain extent when we do sinful acts out of ignorance. A sin can remain grave without us incurring the guilt of mortal sin when ignorance is present. However, when these sins are committed with full knowledge by those who claim to be Christian, they re a direct act of defiance against the Commandments and the Church s teaching. It is then that the culpability of mortal sin is incurred. And mortal sin can send us to eternal. Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium of the Church all condemn these practices vehemently. These things are deeply offensive to the Heavenly Father. Mortal sin destroys sanctifying grace, the salvation offered to us by his Son, Jesus Christ, the sole and only possible way to heaven. To willfully replace Jesus with psychics, Tarots, etc., is gravely offensive to the God of love. No one can participate in them with their good conscience intact. As your Father in faith and your pastor, I ask you to avoid these things at all costs. We should never tempt the Lord our God. If we have a habit of attending these events or places, I ask you to please stop immediately and repent by coming to the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Penance as soon as possible. Why would anyone want to replace the loving affection of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament with these arts? Why would anyone reject the gifts of the Holy Spirit? How could we forget the Heavenly Father, who created us for his very self, and render ourselves separated from God by making a conscience choice to reject what the Divine Trinity offers us each day in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass? These arts dishonor God and cheapen our faith, ransomed at such an immense price by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the only Lord of Heaven and Earth. The Divine Trinity loves us, for God is love. The Blessed Virgin Mary loves us, for she gave birth to incarnate divine love, Jesus. The Holy Spirit loves us, for he continually calls us to the highest virtue of faith in the Divine Trinity by participating in the sacramental life of the Catholic Church. The saints and angels in heaven love us for they share with God the beatific vision, that is, seeing God face-to-face, and praying for us to join them in the glory of heaven forever. This week s gospel concerns our Lord returning at the end of the world for final judgment. The image I used for this week s bulletin cover is called The Triumph of Christianity Over Paganism (Gustave Dore), an apropos image for this appeal. God s greatest desire and hope is for all of us to share with his very divine nature, to be with him for all eternity in the new creation soon to descend upon humanity, the full revelation of the Kingdom of God. Jesus the Lord is coming soon. As the Blessed Virgin Mary said at Fatima, people do not understand the meaning of eternity. Let us work together to reject everything that is contrary to Our Divine Savior and prepare for that day and the Final Judgment of the world, where sin and death will be conquered and vanquished forever. Blessings and prayers, Fr. John F. X. Palatucci
