1 NorthshoreProbe2011:Summary ByLaneCorley TheNorthshoreBaptistAssociationProbewascompletedonApril1 st andtheresultsand findingsareindeedacalltoaction.inpreparationfortheprobeourofficeconductedthe followingresearch:a30 yearstatisticalsummaryofourchurches,astudyofmulti housing onthenorthshore,andzip codedemographicstudiesforeverycommunityinthensba area.onfriday,april1 st,agroupofpastorsandlaymencametogethertoconductanareawidewindshieldsurveylookingforopportunitiesforministriesandpotentialchurch plants.theteamsidentified25areasforpotentialchurchplantingandministry development.hereisasummaryandsomehighlightsfromourfindings: Thenumbers TheNorthshoreBaptistAssociationcoversapproximately1,800squaremiles,from Springfield/AlbanytoSlidell,LA.In2010,theisapproximately343,794people, whichisa19%increasesince2000anda36%increasesince1990.inthe91southern BaptistChurchesintheregion,membership hasgrowntoa2010totalof24,076resident members,a6%increasefrom2000and18% increasesince1990.baptismsandbiblestudy Attendanceexperienceddouble digit percentageincreasesfrom1990to2000,but bothdroppedby14%from2000to ,220peopleworshipedonanygivenSunday in2010atnsbachurches,whichrepresented adeclineof4%from11,691in2000.every financialcategoryhasincreasedsince1980, includingmissionsgiving,withover$3.5 millionbeinggiventomissioncausesbynsba churchesin2010. Ofourthreemajorcenters,twooutofthreereporteddeclinesfrom2000to 2010.The49NSBAChurchesintheTangipahoaandLivingstonParisharea,where is105,927,reporteda14%decreaseinbothbaptismsandbiblestudy attendanceanda10%decreaseinworshipattendance.inwestst.tammanyparish,where is122,848,the24nsbachurchesreporteda7%increaseinbaptisms,8% increaseinworshipattendance,andonlyaslightdecreaseinbiblestudyattendance. However,theincreasestheredidnotkeepupwiththegrowthin,whichwas 23%from2000to2010.InEastSt.TammanyParish,wheretheeffectsofHurricane KatrinawerefeltmostseverelyinAugustof2005,the17NSBAchurchesreporteda12.5% decreaseinresidentmembership,43%decreaseinbaptisms,31%decreaseinbiblestudy attendance,7%decreaseinworshipattendance,whiletheintheregiongrew 16%to114,145. 1
2 WhileGodhasusedhischurchesontheNorthshore,wemustadmitthatourgrowthhas notkeptupwithincreases.asamatteroffact,isgrowing3timesas fastasresidentmembership,witheveryothersignificantmeasurementforgrowth currentlyusedontheannualchurchprofileshowinganoveralldecline.comparingthe numberstothedemonstratestheurgencyofthismomentinourhistory: residentmembersofnsbachurchesmakeuponly7%ofthe,smallgroup attendeesmakeuponly1.9%ofthe,andonly3.3%oftheofthe NorthshoreattendNSBAchurchesonanygivenweekend.Thesepercentagesareathistoric lows.wecannotcontinueasweare. Thereasonsforthesteepdeclinesarevariousandcouldbesubjectsforfuturepastors conferencesandcoffeeshopmeetings,butforcertainthedevastatingeffectsofhurricane Katrinahaveplayedahugerole.Manypeopleleftourregion,andnewpeoplehavemoved infromlessevangelicalcenters.withtheshiftin,shiftsinstrategy areneededtomoreeffectivelyreachnewpeopleforchrist. TheOpportunities Alongwiththestatisticalresearch,seventeamsofpastorsandlayleadersinNSBA churchesparticipatedinaone daywindshieldsurveyacrosstheregiontoidentifyneeds, potentialsitesfornewchurches,andpotentialministryopportunitiesforchurchesinthe region.thechurchmultiplicationteamwillbeworkingwiththensbastaffandlbc MissionsandMinistriesDivisiontosetprioritiesandstrategyutilizingallofthesefindings. Thesearepotentialministriesandchurchesbasedoffawindshieldsurvey,nottheofficial strategyofthenorthshorebaptistassociation.prioritieswillbesetandpartners/leaders developedpriortolaunchinganyoftheseministries. MeetingtheChallenge OverthenexttenyearstheNorthshoreisprojectedtocontinuetogrowatarateof22%, whichwouldbringourtoover419,000people.22%growthforourchurches wouldmeanadding5,296newmembersintenyears.thisstillwouldmeanthatonly7%of thewouldbemembersofnsbachurches.therealchallengeistoincreasethe 3
4 percentageofpeopleattendingnsbaworshipgatheringsandbiblestudies.currently3.3% oftheattendsworshipinnsbachurches.ifwewantedtodoublethatto6.6%of theinworshipattendanceoverthenexttenitwouldmeanadding16,434 worshipers.currently1.9%oftheattendsbiblestudyinnsbachurches.ifwe wantedtodoublethatto3.8%overthenexttenyearsitwouldmeanadding9,304people toourbiblestudyrolls.dauntingnumbersconsideringourcurrentdecline.howcouldwe dothis?andisitevenpossible? Foursuggestionstomeetthechallenge:First,weneedsomeofourchurchestobreakout. Second,weneedhealthierandriskierchurchplanting.Third,weneedtopartnertohelp churchesinneedofandwillingtoengageinrevitalization.fourth,weneedadiscipleship revolution. BreakoutChurches AbreakoutchurchisdefinedbyThomRainerinhisbookbythattitleasachurchthat reachesatleastonepersonforchristeverytwoweeksor26personsperyear,hasa conversionratioof20:1or1conversionforevery20membersperyear,hastenuredand consistentleadership,andthechurchmakesaclearandpositiveimpactonitscommunity. 1 Inourarea,FBCCovingtonwouldbeanexampleofabreakoutchurch.In1980,FBChad 322inSundaySchoolandbaptized32.Dr.WaylonBaileybecamepastorin1989andfrom 1990to2000,SundaySchoolattendancegrewfrom417to1,137.From2000to2010,FBC relocatedintoanewfacility,sponsoredanewchurchonthenorthshorewhichadded100+ membersinitsfirstfiveyears,andtodayfbchasover1,700worshipperseachweek.and, since1990,1,745peoplehavebeenbaptizedthroughtheministryoffbccovington. BedicoBaptistisanotherchurchthathasbrokenoutwithtenuredleadership.LeoMiller becamepastorin1994.in1995,sundayschoolaveraged76weeklyattendeesatbedico.in 2000,thatwasupto141,2005to232,andBedicohasrecentlybrokenthe400barrier.And since1994,537havebeenbaptizedatbedico.othersarepoisedtobreakoutacrossthe Northshore.Themomentumofgrowingchurchesbreakingoutwillhelpuscatchupwith growthandmovepastaseasonofdecline. HealthierandRiskierChurchPlanting Healthierchurchplantingmeanschurchplantingthatisledbychurcheswithaheartto multiplyandreproducethemselvesforthesakeofkingdomexpansion.so,what sneeded forhealthierchurchplantingishealthymotherchurcheswithahearttoreproduce.asbob RobertssaysinhisgreatbookTheMultiplyingChurch, ThefutureoffaithinAmerica(and anywhereintheworld,forthatmatter)isnottiedtoplantingmorechurches,butinraising upofmothercongregationsofeverytribe,tongue,denomination,andnetworkthatare reproducing...thehopeisinpregnantmotherchurches. 2 Riskierchurchplantingwouldbemultiplicationthattargetshardtoreachareasand unchurchedpocketsofour.missiologistalanhirschsuggeststhatcurrent churchmodelsarereachingouttosmallerandsmallersegmentofthe,with 1Rainer,Tom.BreakoutChurches.GrandRapids,Michigan:Zondervan, Roberts,Bob.TheMultiplyingChurch.GrandRapids,Michigan:Zondervan,
5 possiblyasmuchas60%ofamericauntargetedbyourevangelisticandoutreachefforts. 3 Ourprobeidentifiedmulti housingasonepotentialsegmentthatisunderserved. Othersmaybethoseintheirearly20 swithverylittleunderstandingofreligioninany form.weneedsomechurchplantsthatgobeyondplantingaworshipservicethatlooks similartoothersinthecommunity,butwillaskthequestion Whereisthechurchnot? andgotherewiththegospel.weneedsomechurchplantsthathavedifferentscorecards anddifferentexpectations,butwillfaithfullydeliverthemessageofchristtounchurched people. PartnersinRevitalization Churchrevitalizationisneededtoturnmomentumaroundforcongregationsthatarenot effectivelyreachingtheircommunities.thisisalreadyhappeninginavarietyofwayson thenorthshore,withgracememorialbaptistchurchinslidellbecomingthesponsorof CovenantBaptistChurch,whichwasinsteepdeclineandindangerofshuttingthedoors. Also,withWoodlandParkBaptistChurchmergingandtakingontheassetsandliabilitiesof NewLifeChurchinHammond,whichwasinsteepdecline,andnowtheyarelookingto plantanadditionalcampusofwoodlandparkonthesite.andfbchammondworking throughaself assessmentwiththensbastafftobeginaprocesstowardrevitalization. Churchesareneededwhoarewillingtoadoptorsponsorormergewithexisting congregationsforthegloryofgod.andchurchesareneededwhoarewillingtoadmitthere inneedofcomingunderthewingofabenevolentparentchurchorworkwithachurch wantingtohelptheninarevitalizationeffort. ADiscipleshipRevolution Callitrevival,layrenewal,orawakening,whatweneedisarevolutionofdiscipleshipthat willleadnorthshorechristianstomultiplythemselvesspreadingthegospellikeasneeze totheirneighbors,classmates,coworkers,andbeyond.inhisbookchurch3.0,neilcole observes, wehaveloweredthebarofwhatitmeanstobeachristian,suchthatsimply showinguptotheweeklyone houreventwithsomeregularityandacheckbookisallit takes. 4 Wemustrefocusonmakingdiscipleswhowillreproducethemselvesbytelling others,invitingothers,anddisciplingothers. Conclusion Aswethinkaboutourregion,beyondthenumbersarepeoplewhoaregoingthrough cancerdiagnosiswithoutachurchfamilytoprayandcareforthem,peoplewhoaretrying tobreakthescurgeofaddictionwithoutaprayerandsupportnetwork,familiesfacing financialproblemsandcrisiswithoutthewisdomoftheholyspirit,andpeoplefacing deathwithouttheassuranceofeternallifethroughchrist.andaboveall,agodwholongs toknowthemandtoreceivegloryandhonorfromtheirlives.wemustworktogetherfor God sgloryandthelivesofthepeopleofthenorthshore. 3http:// hirsch church model reaching only 40 percent of americans 47500/ 4Cole,Neil.Church3.0:UpgradesfortheFutureoftheChurch.SanFrancisco,CA:Jossey Bass,
