1 LONG-TERM MISSIONS SUGGESTED READING LIST missions overview and calling 1. Perspectives on the World Christian Movement by Steven C. Hawthorne This workbook introduces four different vantage points of the work God has been doing throughout history: biblical, historical, cultural and strategic. It helps people to align their lives with God s global purposes. 2. Send Me! Your Journey to the Nations by Steve Hoke and Bill Taylor Send Me! is a preparatory global mission workbook designed for those who desire to serve God cross-culturally and for those who want to help them. It can assist you working through the process of charting a course from where you are presently to where God would have you to be. 3. Serving as Senders by Neal Pirolo It is not just the missionaries that are involved in missions. You can serve as a sender, a role that is equally important and this book helps the senders to better understand their role and how to be more effective. cross cultural skills for evangelism and discipleship 1. Foreign to Familiar: A Guide to Understanding Hot and Cold Climate Cultures by Sarah A. Lanier This book will help you to understand people in other cultures. The author breaks down the world s cultures into two basic categories: hot climate and cold climate. Then discusses the cultural differences in these two groups including the ways they communicate. 2. Eternity in Their Hearts: Startling Evidence of Belief in the One True God in Hundreds of Cultures Throughout the World by Don Richardson This book shows how God uses redemptive analogies to bring all men to Himself, bearing out the truth from Ecclesiastes that God has also set eternity in the hearts of men. 3. Ministering Cross-Culturally: An Incarnational Model for Personal Relationships by Sherwood G. Lingenfelter and Marvin K. Mayers The authors demonstrate that Jesus needed to learn and understand the culture in which he lived before he could undertake his public ministry. The authors examine how this can help us better understand what it means to establish relationships of grace with those from different cultural and social backgrounds. 4. Peoples on the Move: Introducing the Nomads of the World by David J. Phillips There are nomadic people that live all around the world, many of them dependent on their livestock for survival. This book is a source of information about these people groups. 5. Agents of Transformation: A Guide for Effective Cross-Cultural Ministry by Sherwood G. Lingenfelter A social system relates individual to group and sets up bias against the gospel. Anthropologist Lingenfelter helps cross-cultural ministers understand and transform culture, instead of Westernizing it. 6. Language Acquisition Made Practical by E. Thomas Brewster and Elizabeth S. Brewster Everything you need to know about how to learn a language is complete in this simple, easy-to-follow language learning guide to the LAMP method. 7. Ishmael My Brother: A Christian Introduction to Islam by Anne Cooper and Elsie A. Maxwell A comprehensive presentation of the key facts, figures, and dynamics of this religion so frequently in the headlines and so often misrepresented-complete with exercises, diagrams, bibliography and useful Web sites.
2 8. Sharing Christ in the Tibetan Buddhist World by M. Tsering A practical guide to sharing Christ with anyone whose religion is Tibetan Buddhism or Inner Asian shamanism, from Americans in Eastern dharma to those in Central and South Asia or with Tibetan refugees and immigrants. 9. Intervarsity s International Student Ministry Website This site has several articles on presenting the Gospel to peoples of other faiths (ie Hindu, Islam, Sikh, etc.) animal healthcare and training books 1. Animal Healthcare Training: Nepal s Animal Health Improvement Training Programme by John Young, Karen Stoufer, Narayan Ojha and Henk Peter Dijkema This is a case study describing the United Mission to Nepal s Animal Health Improvement Project that highlights the problems and lessons for anyone thinking of undertaking similar projects. This program was developed by several CVM field staff in partnership with others. 2. Community-Based Animal Healthcare by Andy Catley, Stephen Blakeway and Tim Leyland This is a how to do it guide for establishing basic veterinary services in rural areas. It focuses on community-based approaches and draws from many different programs that has been implemented over the last twenty years. 3. Where There Is No Animal Doctor by Peter Quesenberry and Maureen Birmingham An amazing 410 page manual covering all aspects of animal functions, of all major domestic animals. Contains an incredible amount of information yet written in a simple, easy to understand style. Available in English, Spanish and other languages on the cvm website; 4. Learning Together: The Agricultural Worker s Participatory Sourcebook by Susan Stewart This book is both a practical and essential manual for agricultural and livestock trainers. Included in the 342 pages are tips, techniques, and ideas from agricultural trainers from more than 25 countries on five different continents! Over 200 dynamics, games, tools and ideas are described for use in training events. Available from cvm at 5. Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach: The Power of Dialogue in Educating Adults by Jane Vella Vella uses engaging, personal stories of her work in a variety of adult learning settings, in different countries and with different educational purposes, to show readers how to utilize the twelve principles in their own practice with any type of adult learner. 6. On Teaching and Learning: Putting the Principles and Practices of Dialogue Education into Action by Jane Vella This book is a sequel to Vella s first book Learning to listen, Learning to teach. (See above.) 7. Teaching Cross-Culturally: An Incarnational Model for Learning and Teaching by Judith E Lingenfelter and Sherwood G. Lingenfelter This book challenges what it means to be a Christian educator in a culture other than your own. Chapters include discussions about how to uncover cultural biases, how to address intelligence and learning styles, and teaching for biblical transformation. 8. Helping Health Workers Learn by David Werner and Bill Bower A book of methods, aids, and ideas for instructors at the village level. It is written in clear, basic English, with drawings and photographs to emphasize the key points. spiritual warfare books 1. Behind Enemy Lines, an Advanced Guide to Spiritual Warfare by Charles H. Kraft, Tom White, and Ed Murphy A resource that will enable Christians to enter and endure the battle, and to emerge victoriously. It is an aggressive, thorough, yet balanced approach to spiritual warfare.

Breaking Strongholds: How Spiritual Warfare Sets Captives Free by Tom White Tom White opens your eyes to a world of spiritual strongholds and demonic activity that keeps those you care about in bondage. Operation World by Patrick Johnstone and Jason Mandryke (7th Edition, 2010, Intervarsity Press) Important, detailed statistics on every country in the world, including their religions and how to pray! Available as hardback, paperback, e-book or on CD-ROM. 2. Foreign to Familiar by Sarah Lanier (2000, McDougal Press) Fun and helpful, gives great insight into crossing cultures more effectively. Classifies cultures as to hot or cold climates. (128 page paperback). 3. Travel Well: Maintaining Physical, Spiritual & Emotional Health During International Ministry by Christine Aroney-Sine, M.D. ( Formerly titled Survival of the Fittest, a great resource for staying healthy while traveling.paperback. 4. When Helping Hurts: How to Allieviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor...and Yourself by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert (2012, Paperback) Provides principles and guidelines for effective and holistic ministry to the poor focusing on a community s assets instead of their weakness. 5. Walking With the Poor by Bryant L. Myers (Orbis Books, World Vision, Paperback) Exceptional resource for understanding poverty and transformational mission. Goes deeper into the biblical principles of When Helping Hurts (see above.) 6. Ministering Cross-Culturally by Lingenfelter and Mayers (2nd Edition, 2005, Baker Book House, Paperback) Contains the helpful Basic Values Assessment CVM uses to explore how culture shapes incarnational ministry. 7. Learning Together: The Agricultural Worker s Participatory Sourcebook by Susan Stewart (1998, Christian Veterinary Mission, Paperback) Tips and techniques for participatory approaches for livestock trainers and community development. (Available from CVM) 8. Culture Shock-Country Name Culture Shock! country guides are easy-to-read, accurate, and entertaining crash courses in local customs and etiquette. Other travel books on the specific country you are going to can be very helpful. 9. Daughters of Islam by Miriam Adeney (2002, Intervarsity Press, Paperback) Great first hand stories of Muslim women who came to faith in Jesus Christ and how that was lived out. 10. CIA World Fact Book ( Details on 267 countries. Very handy for orientation and for speaking to churches & groups. veterinary resources for short-term missions 1. Where There is No Animal Doctor by Drs. Peter Quesenberry and Maureen Birmingham (2007, Christian Veterinary Mission, Paperback) Best resource for practicing basic veterinary health care in primitive and remote settings around the world. Based on Peter and Maureen s years of experience overseas as CVM field staff. Available in multiple languages. Simple line drawings to illustrate lessons. (Available from CVM)
5 2. Raising Healthy Animal Series by Christian Veterinary Mission There are a dozen species- specific booklets aimed at raising healthy livestock under primitive conditions. They can be a useful reference or a meaningful gift to a host family (some are available in Spanish or French). (Available from CVM.) 3. Foreign Animal Disease The online downloadable version of the Gray Book with a list of all current FADs is emergency_response/downloads/nahems/fad.pdf short-term missions resources 1. Mack and Leeann s Guide to Short-term Missions by J. Mack and Leeann Stiles Great advice from seasoned leaders about how to succeed in STM. 2. Short-term Missions Workbook, From Missions Tourist to Global Citizens by Tim Dearborn Asks great questions and provokes us toward maturity in our thinking, motives and philosophy of missions. 3. Maximum Impact, Short-term Missions by Peterson, Aeschliman and Sneed Breaks it down technically, but still very helpful. 4. Before You Pack Your Bag, Prepare Your Heart by Cindy Judge Short-Term Mission preparation Guide with 12 Bible Studies plus a trip journal. 5. Serving with Eyes Wide Open: Doing STM with Cultural Intelligence by David Livermore Helps Christians understand the changing face of Christianity and how that affects short-term missions. 6. Re-Entry by Peter Jordan Everyone should read this book so they are equipped to handle the very crucial transition from a missions trip to life at home. 7. Friend-Raising, Building a Missionary Support Team that Lasts by Betty Barnett Good info on the fundraising process; most helpful for long-termers or those who do regular short-term trips.
