choose your own adventure Annual Report 2016

Choose your adventure. You come to a fork in the path. Do you go left or right? Do you choose to climb the mountain or walk by the stream? Whatever choice you make, whichever path you walk down, you always know that there will be more choices to make, new doors to open, and you re excited to see where they take you. While the adventures we choose every day in life aren t always as big as climbing a mountain, those small choices and adventures are what make life full. At Heart Havens, we empower people to choose their adventures for themselves. No matter what they choose, we ensure that they have the tools to pursue their dreams and their goals: in short, their life adventures. Everyone s path is different, and the doors we open for ourselves are very seldom the same. But each journey is beautiful, and Heart Havens values each and every one.
From Our CEO
We choose our adventures. That may sound like a mindless platitude to you; perhaps you re imagining it with a picture of someone who climbed a mountain or went snorkeling. But adventures aren t always of the mountain climbing variety: we choose small adventures every day. Maybe you signed up for a pottery class, or checked out a new coffee shop in town. At Heart Havens, we know that these small adventures are some of the things that make life fun and vibrant, and when we choose these adventures, they re even sweeter. We empower the folks we support to choose the adventures that matter to them was a big year for Heart Havens. People we support were involved in so many wonderful things, including theater, choirs, sports leagues, and more. One person was invited to the Special Olympics state championship in bocce ball. Two others participated in an art show. There are simply too many accomplishments, both small and large, to list here, and we re so proud of all of them! After carefully evaluating our options, we determined it was necessary to close the Morrison home in Newport News. Previous residents of the home had moved out due to health concerns, and the remaining residents were also rapidly approaching a need for more medically intensive supports than Heart Havens is licensed to provide. Due to the limited number of Medicaid Waiver slots available, we had tremendous difficulty in filling the home, and keeping the home open while waiting for more slots would harm the overall Heart Havens operation. We are thankful for the support the Morrison home received, and we encourage our friends in Newport News and the Peninsula to engage with our Macleigh-Holland and Rappahannock homes in Virginia Beach and Kilmarnock, respectively. Thank you again for your support of Heart Havens! As always, if you d like to schedule a visit to a home or a Heart Havens speaker to visit your church or group, please call us toll-free at (877) I also invite you to join us on social media to see the wonderful things our residents do year round. Jennifer Boyden, MA, QIDP Chief Executive Officer 3
Christina
Christina s adventures center around her favorite music and movies. She always looks forward to seeing new movies, whether it s the latest Disney film, or the newest movie from her favorite actor, Dwayne The Rock Johnson. She especially loves movie musicals; she loves to learn the songs so she can sing along! She also loves receiving her People magazine each week so she can keep track of what all her favorite movie stars are up to. Christina has been exploring her talents as an artist. She participated this year in a large art show in her home of Virginia Beach, where a number of pieces Christina worked on were featured. She loved seeing her work on display! 5
Chris
Chris s adventures typically involve one of two things: Disney movies or technology. Chris loves everything Disney, particularly the princesses. He loves going to see every new Disney movie that comes out, and he loves watching them on DVD at home, too. One of his favorite events each year is going to see Disney on Ice, where his favorite characters come to life. On the technology side, Chris loves using his computer to learn new things. He loves to look up facts about nature, history, and Disney. There s always something new to learn! He also has a camera that he loves using to take pictures of his adventures for his scrapbooks. 7
We Love Volunteers! We love our volunteers! In 2016, volunteers blessed the people we support with pizza parties, cornhole games, Bible studies, picnics, and so much more. Still other volunteers blessed us with painted rooms, stuffed brochures, or lawn care. Some of these activities help us save money, but all of them are priceless! Many of our volunteers come from the United Methodist connection in the Virginia Annual Conference, but several Episcopal, Baptist, and Catholic congregations also blessed us. We were proud to continue our partnership with Hands On Greater Richmond, and we developed a new relationship with the University of Richmond chapter of Alpha Phi Omega. 8
This Old House Just like your house requires maintenance from time to time, Heart Havens homes do, too. Sometimes those repairs are small and can be taken care of by our amazing volunteers (which saves us money). Other times, the repairs are larger and require a general contractor or other skilled labor. In 2016, general maintenance and repairs at our homes throughout Virginia totaled $25,333. This number includes repairs that cost less than $1000, such as repairs to HVAC units and other appliances. Capital Expenses When repairs cost more than $1000, we classify them as capital expenses. Our capital expenses in 2016 totaled $40,910. This total is made up of the following large projects: New roof, Bonnie house New dormers, Bonnie house New carpet, Kilmarnock house New bathroom floors, Saratoga house New kitchen counter tops, Colonial Beach house Interior painting, Lynchburg 1 house Heat pump repair, Tate house New entrance hand rails, Mary Beth Graff house Bathroom renovation, Mary Beth Graff house ** ** This project was funded entirely through a donor s generous gift. 9
A New Website We were blessed in 2016 to work with The Scylla Group to develop a brand new website! This new website is easier to navigate and more responsive, ensuring that our web presence looks as great as possible. The website was built using Umbraco, a content management system that is very user friendly, making it very easy for Heart Havens to keep the website up to date. 10 The Scylla Group did the website redesign as an in-kind donation, saving Heart Havens approximately $7500 in up front costs. This beautiful website also helps us recruit staff, develop new donors, and connect with families who need our services, which adds immense value to The Scylla Group s inkind gift.

Our Generous Supporters In 2016, Heart Havens received over $250,000 in generous grants and contributions. 26 Brian Manwiller Award Every year at Annual Conference, it is our honor to present the Brian Manwiller In HIS Grip Award to a United Methodist Man who has demonstrated outstanding advocacy for people with a developmental disability and volunteerism with Heart Havens. Our 2016 winner was Jim Green, from Winchester. Jim was an active member of the Winchester District United Methodist Men, where he was instrumental in the planning of their annual golf tournament and bowl-a-thon fundraisers for Heart Havens. He also developed strong relationships with the gentlemen who live at the Saratoga home in Winchester. 24 It was an honor and a privelege to honor Jim!
