P Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, abounding in steadfast love toward us, healing the sick and raising the dead, showering us with every good gift. P Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection. P Just and gracious God, C we come to you for healing and life. Our sins hurt others and diminish us; we confess them to you. Our lives bear the scars of sin; we bring these also to you. Show us your mercy, O God. 4 Gathering Hymn ELW 689 Our Communion Practice: We believe that in the sacrament of Holy Communion, God comes to love and forgive us. Through this meal, God brings us God s love in a tangible way and renews us in our relationship with him. As he promised, Jesus is truly present in the bread and wine. Jesus has instructed that we remember him when we celebrate this meal. As we come to Communion, we bring to Jesus our sin and a sincere desire to be forgiven and to be changed to be more like him. (I Corinthians 11:23-26; John 6:53-56) Here at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church we invite and encourage all baptized Christians who are communing members of any Christian church to come forward for communion. To be sensitive to the needs of all who worship with us, you may choose to commune with a white grape juice instead of the red wine. The white grape juice may be found in the inner circle of the wine tray. After Communion, all stand as the minister says: P The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. Prayer after Communion P Let us pray. O God, as a mother comforts her child, so you comfort your people, carrying us in your arms and satisfying us with this food and drink, the body and blood of Christ. Send us now as your disciples, announcing peace and proclaiming that the reign of God has come near; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord 4 Blessing P The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord s face shine upon you with grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. 25

6 FIRST READING: Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14; 2: Vanity of vanities, says the Teacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. 12 I, the Teacher, when king over Israel in Jerusalem, 13 applied my mind to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven; it is an unhappy business that God has given to human beings to be busy with. 14 I saw all the deeds that are done under the sun; and see, all is vanity and a chasing after wind. 2:18I hated all my toil in which I had toiled under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to those who come after me 19 and who knows whether they will be wise or foolish? Yet they will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity. 20 So I turned and gave my heart up to despair concerning all the toil of my labors under the sun, 21 because sometimes one who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave all to be enjoyed by another who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil. 22 What do mortals get from all the toil and strain with which they toil under the sun? 23 For all their days are full of pain, and their work is a vexation; even at night their minds do not rest. Thanksgiving at the Table P In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Lord s Prayer P We join hands and pray together the prayer our Savior taught us. C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 8 BLESSINGS OF BACKPACKS, STUDENTS AND TEACHERS 8 (All children may come forward with their backpacks.) P For the marvels of your creation, C we praise you, O God. For the opportunity to explore and study, we praise you, O God. P For those who guide us, teachers and mentors, C we praise you, O God. P Teach us your ways and guide us in your path, for you are the creator of all that is, seen and unseen. As we get ready to start another year in school, we ask your blessing on these backpacks and especially on these children who will wear them. As they do the very important work of being students, bless them with eagerness to learn, that their world may grow large; respect for teachers and students, that they may form healthy relationships: love for nature, that they may become caretakers of your creation; happiness when learning is easy and stick-to-it-iveness when it is hard; faith in Jesus as their best teacher and closest friend. Bless the bags, briefcases and backpacks of the teachers and school staff. Give them warm hearts, and patience for all of the students they meet, and the lives they will touch. Make them an example of your love and grace to the students, parents and co-workers. Give them wisdom, enthusiasm and joy in their calling as educators, and the perseverance to endure the difficult moments that arise. We ask that you would protect these, your own children. Watch over them and keep them safe as they travel to and from school. As they learn, help them also to discover the different gifts that you have given each one of them to be used in your work in the world. As they hear the many voices that will fill their days, help them to listen most carefully for your voice, the one that tells them you will love them always, no matter what. We ask this in Jesus name. Offertory Prayer P God of mercy and grace, the eyes of all wait upon you, and you open your hand in blessing. Fill us with good things at your table, that we may come to the help of all in need, through Jesus Christ, our redeemer and Lord. DIALOGUE P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give our thanks and praise. 21

9 OFFERTORY RESPONSE Please Stand SECOND READING: Colossians 3:1-11 1So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, 3 for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient. 7 These are the ways you also once followed, when you were living that life. 8 But now you must get rid of all such things anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices 10 and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. 11 In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions. 16 Then he told them a parable: The land of a rich man produced abundantly. 17 And he thought to himself, What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops? 18 Then he said, I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry. 20 But God said to him, You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be? 21 So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God. 13 HOLY BAPTISM The assembly may be seated. P Pour out your Holy Spirit; the power of your living Word, that those who are washed in the waters of baptism may be given new life. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. BAPTISM P God, who is rich in mercy and love, gives us a new birth into a living hope through the sacrament of baptism. By water and the Word God delivers us from sin and death and raises us to new life in Jesus Christ. We are united with all the baptized in the one body of Christ, anointed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, and joined in God's mission for the life of the world. Who do you present for Holy Baptism?. Sustain Claire with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. As you bring your daughter to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with her among God's faithful people, bring her to the word of God and the holy supper, teach her the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in her hands the holy scriptures, and nurture her in faith and prayer, so that your daughter may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. Profession of Faith P I ask you parents to proclaim your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? Parents: I renounce them. Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? Parents: I renounce them. Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? Parents: I renounce them. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family, and through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By the baptism of Jesus death and resurrection you set us free from the power of sin and death and raise us up to live in you. 15
