3 NARRATIVE QUESTIONS 1. What is the congregation s or organization s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out. Lake Grove Presbyterian Church s vision is to be A caring community, alive in Christ. Along with the essential tenets of the Fellowship Community of PCUSA, the core values that shape our vision, describing who we are, who we are called to be, and how we live out our vision, include the following: In Jesus Name: We passionately preach the timeless truth of God s Word. We eagerly experience God through awe-inspiring music. We compassionately engage the hurting. We joyfully and intentionally disciple children and youth. We faithfully walk beside our Mission Partners. By living out these core values in our regular programming, we will faithfully answer God s call on each of our lives: to know Him, to love Him, to glorify Him, and to reach the least and the lost for Him. Guided by our vision, and acting upon our core values, we will fulfill our mission statement: To get changed through personal relationship with Jesus Christ. To get connected through our commitment to the people of Christ. To get going through our commitment to the work of Christ. We will reach our congregation, our community, and our world with the grace and truth of Jesus Christ. 2. How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency? We are a vibrant Christ-centered congregation with immense opportunity to connect more fully with our Lake Oswego community. We have a mature membership built on a solid foundation of active participation and love for Christ. We must attract, engage, and empower a younger generation - both within our walls, and more importantly, in our community - to carry God s message and our heart for mission into the future. Lake Oswego s demographics give us huge opportunity. Our city is growing, with 63% of the population under 53 years of age. 100,000 people in our area are not connected to a church. To reach young families we must communicate with them more effectively, provide different ways and times of worship, modernize our children s ministries, and offer and support opportunities for mission and ministry. We are blessed with resources to invest in our community. While Lake Oswego is economically successful, not everyone shares in this success. We feel increasingly called to serve those members of our community in need. Our key objectives include: Move to multi-venue, multi-style worship, while preserving excellent traditional worship. Cultivate access for all generations both the churched and unchurched. Engage our community by adopting Title 1 schools in Lake Oswego and other direct acts of service to those in need. 4 Overhaul our digital platform, presence and brand to improve engagement and access. Welcome, empower and develop emerging leaders. 3. How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals? Lake Grove Presbyterian Church needs a dynamic and collaborative leader who will empower our congregation and staff to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ in new and engaging ways, so we are known as much for our good works locally and regionally as we are in lands halfway around the world. This leader must push us to expand our reach using technology, appealing to those who seek less-traditional times, days and ways of worship. And even in so doing, we can still work as a singular body of Christ. To help us live our vision of being A caring community, alive in Christ, our head pastor will passionately preach the timeless truth of God s Word, reaching across generations and geographies. Our head pastor must be an energetic leader who will preserve the foundational values of preaching, music, and prayer that have been our strengths over time. This leader will also push us to embrace those areas we have identified as having potential for growth and improvement. As head of staff, this position must grow leadership for the future, developing a culture in which the gifts and talents of many individuals are encouraged for a stronger whole. 4. Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and/or organization. We are searching for a pastor who shows us how to walk with Jesus in our world. As the spiritual leader of our congregation, we are searching for someone who loves the Lord, is rooted in prayer, has deep knowledge of scripture, is self aware, and passionately and articulately preaches God s Word. As the face of our congregation in the community, we are searching for someone who is mission-focused, collaborative, trustworthy, warm and outgoing, humorous, and of highest integrity. As the person leading our congregation into the future, we are searching for someone who is energetic, visionary, courageous, strategic, inspirational, adaptive, and able to engage and enjoy people of all ages. This person will embrace multiple worship styles and harness the power of technology to extend our reach into our community and our world. As a person we will turn to in times of need, we are searching for someone who is compassionate, kind, empathetic, and wise with exceptional listening and communication skills. As the head of our staff, we are searching for a leader who is humble, transparent and sincere who builds strong teams and develops future leaders. We have high aspirations for our head pastor. 5 5. For what specific tasks, assignments, and programs areas will this person have responsibility? This person is tasked with enthusiastically leading us to fulfill our vision and mission. He or she shall lead by example, modeling ongoing spiritual development and purposefully embracing all our church s endeavors to fulfill the Great Commission. He or she shall plan and preach engaging, inspiring sermons. Preaching should be faithful to God s Word and address tangible issues facing our world and congregation. Worship should be thoughtfully planned, adaptable to multiple styles, and include administration of the sacraments of baptism and communion. This person shall be available to provide Christ-centered, thoughtful, humble, and graceful care and spiritual direction to the hurting and seeking. In all tasks he or she shall zealously and collaboratively seek to engage the congregation s spiritual development and participation in worship and mission activities.
