1 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, "Depart in peace, be warmed and filled," but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? James 2:15-16 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, There is no better message in all of creation than the proclamation of our right standing with the God of all creation. We have been freely given an inheritance in the wonders of heaven itself. The slate of our wrong doings has been wiped clean, cleansed by the blood of Christ, through His death and resurrection. Jesus stood in our place and bore the wrath of the Father, paying the price for our sins. Now we are eternally free. This freedom is more than simply a pie in the sky dream. It is a freedom that encompasses our entire life. We have the entire inheritance now, but some aspects of it have not yet been fully realized. The gift of salvation can be characterized with these two categories: the NOW and the NOT YET. Now, this moment, the guilt of our sins is gone. Now, this moment, we can freely address our heavenly Father through our prayers. Now, this moment, we can enter into the presence of Jesus and partake of His body and blood in the feast of salvation. Spiritually all is well right now. We do not need to wait to be forgiven. We are NOW and forevermore forgiven and righteous before God. The NOT YET part of our inheritance stems from the reality that even as we are forgiven, sin still clings to us in the fallen world. We are not yet without sin. We do not yet have immortal and imperishable bodies. We are not yet free from grief and pain. At our Lord s return, all these enemies of the church will utterly be destroyed, especially death itself. Until then however, we are not yet freed from the troubles of this life. Despite the fact that we must wait for a complete freedom from this valley of tears, our Lord has not left us without aid. As He walked the earth, Jesus frequently responded to those around Him in compassion and with healing. John records our Lord s declaration that He had come so that we might have abundant life. While there is no promise of immediate relief from our trials, Jesus does not leave us without hope. He continues to provide healing and comfort through the means of His creations, such as doctors and nurses, friends and family. For the hungry there is food, for the lonely there is company, for the cold there is clothing. The mission of the Church is to proclaim the love of Christ to the world. This is accomplished through the proclamation of the Gospel. Week in and week out the Good News is preached and the Supper is celebrated. The soul is soothed and the healed. Following the lead of Jesus, James points out that the church is called to have compassion on people that includes bodily needs as well as spiritual needs. Jesus came to redeem soul and body. As a congregation, how can we heed the encouragement of James? How can we show the love of Jesus to our communities? What are the needs in this area that we could address? Ours is the most important message of all time. Let us proclaim it through Word and deed, even as our Lord has provided for us in time and for all eternity. In Christ,

5 Recap of July 19, 2017 Voter s Meeting July voter s meeting was called to order by Chairman, Herb Pederson. 20 members present. Opening prayer was given by Pastor Sabol. Vice Chairman, Jeremiah Schutt presented a recap of the June 23, 2017 council meeting. Treasurer, Kim Wendt presented her report which included expenses from June 22 through July 19, Expenses totaled $10, Financial Secretary, Don Selvig presented his report on funds received and asset account balances. Don reported that $660 in contributions have been received for the parsonage tiling project. Total funds available are $4, Our goal is $10,000. Project will begin sometime in August. Your contributions are needed. If you have thoughts for future fund raiser projects please contact me or Don Selvig. Over all weekly contributions are not keeping up with monthly budgeted expenses. We currently have 6 members using the Simply Giving program. See Don for details on how this program works. Deacons will be holding a meeting with parents of current and new confirmation students on Wednesday, August 2 at 7 pm. The meeting will be to work out plans for our confirmation program. Trustees will be working with Tom Golly on planning a date and what will be needed for the parsonage drainage program. Permission was given to remove divider curtains between the kitchen and fellowship hall. Board of Education: Jill Meinert will be in charge of Vacation Bible School this year. Sunday school for fall program is being worked on. Endowment Fund committee approved the funding of new material for the preschool program if needed. Teachers are to make the decision. Pastor s Comments: Pastor asked for ideas for our August Mission of the Month door offering. Voters approved a program being implemented by the Winnebago Police Department providing child safety and drug prevention education material for children, preschool and older, as well as material on ID theft, internet safety and safety for our senior citizens. These materials have been designated by the National Child Safety Council. Cost of material is $2.70 per person. Your generosity will be appreciated. Pastor suggested that in line with our current Move Forward program we look into a program that the synod suggests titled RE:VITALITY Lutheran revitalization. Voters approved getting more information. Pastor stated that MLHS is changing their agreements with congregations. Supporting members will be asked to commit 1% to 3% of their budget. Pastor asked permission for fill out a vacancy on the MLHS board. Time commitment is usually on his normal personal time. We have no mileage, etc. commitment. Voters approved. Pastor stressed the importance of parents of confirmation students to attend the August 2 deacons meeting. Past Business: Recap of meeting at Easton was discussed. The congregation of St. Peter Lutheran Church will have some difficult decisions to make in the near future. Their decision will also bring forth some difficult decisions that our congregation will have to make. Please keep both congregations in your prayers. A motion was made at the June council meeting to repeal our practice of guaranteeing that the Mission of the Month door offering would total a minimum of $50. Voters voted to repeal that motion and return to the practice of guaranteeing a $50 minimum for each mission selected for the monthly door offering. New Business: Voters approved our insurance with Guide One premium $5, This was an increase of $ Increase in property valuation and liability exposer is the reason. Last year we checked out three insurance companies and Guide One gave us the most coverage for the least amount of money. The other two company s bids last year were more than this current bid. Workmen s Comp estimated at $ This is based on payroll and will fluctuate some. An annual audit is performed to determine the exact amount. Pastor s health care and retirement plan did not change for the upcoming year. The Nomination and Budget committees will be meeting in September. Vice Chairman, Jeremiah Schutt will be the head of these committees. If you would like to serve on the council or have budget suggestions please contact him. Your interest is appreciated. Meeting adjourned with the Lord s Prayer. Herb Pederson, Chairman
6 FAMILY NIGHT August 30th at 6pm we will be having another family night. Along with this there will be our official kick off to Sunday School. This will be held at the church, children will get to meet their teachers. There will be games and activities for all. We will be having pizza from Casey s. Come one come all! NOMINATIONS FOR CONGREGATION CHAIRMAN After many years of dedicated service, Herb Pederson has decided to refrain from having his name on the ballot for this coming year. The congregation is seeking nominations for the office. Please submit names to Jerimiah Schutt by Sept 1. As explained in our constitution the Chairman shall preside at all Regular and special meetings of the voter s Assembly and of the Church Council, and shall oversee all boards and committees. The office of Chairman shall be held by a male voting member only. A special thank you to Herb for all he has done in his service of Chairman. HELP CAP THE TILE It will take approximately $10, to pay for the needed improvements at the parsonage. Drain tile will be installed around the foundation of the house and a wall in the basement will be straightened and reinforced. Current donations for this project total $4, as of now. As new donations come in, watch the ribbon climb to the top of the tile to show the progress. When the ribbon reaches to the top we will be able to CAP THE TILE! A NOTE ABOUT THE BOARD OF DEACONS According to our Constitution, the Deacons are tasked with rendering necessary assistance to the Pastor in the ministering to the spiritual needs of the congregation and of the individual members. In Practical terms, this means the Board of Deacons works with the pastor to plan the when, where and how of our corporate worship and to ensure the individual needs of members are met, especially in times of illness and strife. Any member of the congregation is welcome to attend the first part of the Board of deacons to share concerns they may have. It would be helpful to let a Deacon or Pastor know if you plan on attending and the topic you wish to discuss, though that is not necessary. Because some of the issues discussed are sensitive. Worship Notes: Praise Service: Starting in September, the 2 nd Sunday of the month* will be a Praise service. The liturgy will be a spoken service of the Word that will include some contemporary Christian music and praise songs. At this time, the Praise service will be on Sunday only (not Saturday) so that the Praise Singers can be present to help teach the congregation the new music. The first Praise service will be on Rally Day September 10. *Occasionally, the weekend may be changed due to the Festival Schedule. For 2018, the only change will be in the month of March, when the Praise service will be March 18. Hymn Sing Services: On 5th Sundays (except in October, which is Reformation) we will have hymn sing services. At this service, the congregation picks the hymns for the day. Each member present on that Sunday will be able to write their favorite hymn on a piece of paper. The papers will be collected and then Pastor will randomly draw out six hymns which will be sung over the course of the service. All remaining hymn requests will be incorporated into upcoming worship services. Our first Hymn Sing will be September 23 and 24.
