Easter! Easter is a time where you reflect with your family on the pain that Jesus went through on Good Friday to save our sins and create a better life for all of us. After all the suffering and torture, three days later Jesus was resurrected from the dead. He shows us just how much God can do for the people he loves. Jesus taught many how to act and how to love others around you. During this Easter season, we should try to do the same. Here at school, the 7 th graders will put on the Stations of the Cross where we hear about the day that Jesus was crucified on the cross and his painful journey. Two or three students take part in each station, explaining its importance to Jesus journey and the hardship he went through. It s important to be respectful and silent as we walk through these stations. The 5 th graders put on the Passion Play, which shows us what really happened that dreadful day of Jesus crucifixion. Every 5 th grade student has a part in this presentation, whether it s lights, Mary, or even Jesus. They have spent countless hours of hard work perfecting their performance to depict the true sadness of that day. During this Lenten season, we are remembering Jesus while fasting and praying. It s a time to think back to what happened to him and what he went through for us. We all read the Bible and reflect on the passion of our Lord. Some of us are even giving something up that we really love in remembrance of Jesus. For example, some people are giving up their favorite types of candy as their version of fasting and going without something that maybe isn t so easy for them. Some people are likewise giving up TV, video games, chocolate, or soda. (Continued on Page 5) 4/6/12 4/7/12 4/8/12 4/9/12 4/10/12 51 F-40 F 53 F-37 F 59 F-42 F 58 F-44 F
2 VOLUME 3, ISSUE 7 SHS TIMES PAGE 2 Spring Break By Megan Faricy As the school year drifts into spring and homework loads get heavier, a break from all the pressures of day-to-day classes is sometimes needed. Summer is still a couple months away and mid-winter break feels like ages ago. That s why students, teachers, and parents alike all cannot wait for spring break to begin. This year, it falls on April 7th (early 11:45 dismissal is on Good Friday, the 6 th ) through April 15 th. And the most important reason we have Spring Break to begin with? Easter Sunday, which lies on April 8 th this year. Many of our students and teachers have already begun talking about and preparing their vacation plans Bake Sale Results By Greta Tobin Last week, the Student Council held a bake sale for our sister school in Nicaragua. All of the proceeds go straight to the school for learning supplies, such as paper, pens, and pencils, and also for building the school and keeping it safe for all of the children there. As of right now, many kids in Nicaragua are not educated, and therefore, their for break. I ll be staying home and doing whatever I want! exclaimed Ms. Jorissen. I m excited to vacation in Hawaii! said Michael O Toole, 6 th grade. Jules Gimbernat says, I m going to Suncadia! Some of the most popular spring break vacation spots include Hawaii, Oregon, Palm Springs, Idaho, Arizona, Whistler, and Florida. How fortunate we are! 7 th and 8 th graders have an even bigger reason to brag! They re lucky enough to travel to Washington D.C., our nation s capital, for the break, touring and sightseeing with their peers. Many teachers have also sacrificed their time away from teaching to future can not be as full of opportunities like lucky kids, such as all of the students here at Sacred Heart. For the our sister school, we held two bake sales, both very successful, and we raised at least threehundred dollars! Thank you to all of the students and families who brought in baked goods. We had so many deserts that we had come chaperone their trip and take part in the fun times. Whether you re staying home and relaxing, visiting family, or soaking up the sun this spring break, have a delightful vacation and unwind until school starts again on April 16 th. to hold yet another bake sale the very next day to pass out the remaining goods. Thank you also to those who gave extra money to this cause, we know that it is much appreciated from the students in Nicaragua.
3 VOLUME 3, ISSUE 7 SHS TIMES PAGE 3 First Communion By Chris Martin For several months during this school year, the second graders have been preparing and training for their First Communion. This is a very important event in their Catholic education and once completed, it allows them to receive Eucharist at Mass. The first group to receive their First Communion will do so on Saturday, April 21 st at 5pm. The ceremony of the First Communion is a tradition throughout the Roman Catholic Church in which family members come to celebrate their children receiving Eucharist. By receiving Eucharist, Catholic children are set on their path to Confirmation. All of the second graders have been working very hard on their training and are all very excited to receive their First Communion. This celebration means a lot to them, and will help them progress on their journey as Catholics. Be sure to congratulate them when they have finished! Easter Bible Verse Philippians 3:10-12 I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 4 VOLUME 3, ISSUE 7 SHS TIMES PAGE 4 Writing Contest Winner Chosen By Newspaper Staff Thank you for everyone who submitted articles to us for the writing contest. We received many wonderful submissions, but we could only chose one winner. All of us on the staff read every article, and we believe that our favorite article was by Emma Jones. Congratulations! We will be featuring Emma s submission later in the newspaper on page seven. Along with Emma s submission, we will also publish another article that we March Madness By Tom Frigon really enjoyed, though this article will not be a winner. Can you feel the madness? The NCAA March Madness has started and Cinderella teams thrive, amazing upsets happen, and cold-blooded buzzer beaters excite the crowd. This tournament consisted of the best teams in the country including heavyweights such as Kentucky, North Carolina, Michigan State, Syracuse, Missouri, and Ohio State. Just like many before this year s tournament, it has not disappointed any. After the first round was completed there was not a single person who could have correctly predicted the outcomes. For the first time in the NCAA s history two number 2 seeds were upset by 15 seeds in the same year. Those mark the 5 th and 6 th times that has ever happened. That wasn t the end though, for the first time in the round of 64 over half of the teams seeded 9 th or lower won their games. But those games are over. The remaining teams played each other, and in the end, it came down to Kentucky and Kansas. The game came down to the wire. No one could have guessed who would win. It was close until the last minute, until Kentucky pulled ahead and just barely won the tournament. Congratulations to anyone who guessed Kentucky would win!

7 VOLUME 3, ISSUE 7 SHS TIMES PAGE 7 The Winning Article By Emma Cooney The Runners-Up By Riva Tobin and Drew Chapman By Drew Chapman: I would like to trade places with Neil Armstrong. I love learning about him. Neil Armstrong was the first person to land on the moon and to take the first step on it. I would love to take off from a spaceship and land on the moon and look down on Earth. I think Neil Armstrong is a real hero. Thank you Drew! We really enjoyed your article, and it was a very hard choice. If I could trade places with someone tomorrow, I would trade with Rosa Parks. I picked Rosa Parks because she has lots of courage and bravery. Even though she got in trouble for sitting in the front of the bus, she taught everyone, including blacks, that they should all be treated equally. If I was able to meet her, that would be awesome! That is why I picked Rosa Parks. Thank you Emma for your wonderful submission! We will deliver you your Jamba Juice gift card shortly. By Riva Tobin: If I could be anyone On Earth tomorrow I would trade places with a homeless person. I think that it would be a great experience for me and would help me be a better person. I would be less picky about the food I eat, considering I probably would not eat anything tomorrow. I would not complain about my shoes being too small, considering I probably would not have shoes tomorrow. I would be wiser tomorrow than I ever would be. On Earth tomorrow, I would trade places with a homeless person. Thank you Riva! This was a really great article and it was so close!
8 VOLUME 3, ISSUE 7 SHS TIMES PAGE 8 Seussical By Patricia Vowels This year s spring musical, Seussical, was a huge success! Over one hundred students participated from grades 1-8. If you missed the play this year, here is a synopsis of the plot. Seussical is a story led by the Cat and the Hat, about an elephant named Horton, who finds a dust speck with Whos on it. Whos are tiny people that are so small, that you cannot see them. Horton decides that he wants to save the Whos from getting hurt, and places their dust speck on a clover to protect their town (Whoville). This clover is tossed around by some evil monkeys called the Wickersham Brothers and Vlad Vladikoff (a vulture). All of the Jungle creatures believe Horton is a foolish animal, because he thinks that there are tiny people that live on a dust speck, which, to be fair, does sound insane. Meanwhile, surrounding the chaos, Mayzie La Bird had been sitting on her egg and wanted a vacation. She asks Horton to sit on her nest. He agrees, although he is later torn between sitting on her egg, or helping the Whos, who have been thrown into a pile of identical clovers lost and alone in the universe. Along with Mayzie, there is another bird, Gertrude. Gertrude is madly in love with Horton. She wanted him to notice her, but he is so preoccupied with the Whos and Mayzie s egg, that he does not. All Gertrude had was a onefeathered tail so with the help form Mayzie, Gertrude goes to Dr. Dake to get a bigger tail. Her tail becomes so giant, that she can no longer fly! It is twenty feet long! Alas, Horton still fails to notice her. In the meantime, while all of this is occurring, the Whos on Whoville have problems of their own. Along with being trapped on a speck of dust and potentially dying at any given time because of their circumstance, Jojo, the mayors son, is spurring a lot of trouble. He is a very big thinker, and his imagination soars. But because of this, he is put into boot camp with General Ghangis Con Shmitz, and no one understands him. The only one he can really talk to is Horton. Back in the jungle, Gertrude decides that she does not need a ginormous tail to impress Horton, but instead remembers that what is inside counts most. She goes to Dr. Dake and forces him to pluck it out, and then goes on a long adventure to find the lost clover, and to tell Horton her feelings. After returning the clover, even more trouble spurs, because the jungle creatures put Horton of trial for his crazy beliefs. However, during the trial, the jungle creatures finally hear the Whos yell and shout, and at last, all is well.
