1 Yom Kippur: Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16) 15 th November 2015 Please have your Bibles open at Leviticus chapter 16. There s an outline in the bulletin to jot down notes if you wish Let me pray first, for God s help and guidance as we look at this passage together Intro/Better Day(s) When Neil Armstrong stepped on to the surface of the moon He made one small step for man but one giant leap for mankind In the case of Aaron the High Priest of Israel a few extra steps once a year made a huge leap for the people of Israel - toward the heart of God As we ve seen so far in the book of Leviticus Day after day the High Priest made sacrifices on behalf of the people for their sin and rebellion Day after day the High Priest symbolically sacrificed an animal to God and in doing so the sin and blame of the people s sin was transferred on to the animal who was killed instead of the person who had sinned. [Powerpoint 1 Tent of Meeting] All this contact with human sin and rebellion meant that God s sanctuary the Tent of Meeting - needed a clean-up from this pollution of sin after all remember that in part of the sanctuary behind the curtain in the Most Holy Place God resided and His presence hovered over the ark (chest) containing the tablets with the 10 commandments on them (pause) Page 1 of 10

So once a year a special Day was set aside 2 And this was the only Day that the High Priest could go into the Most Holy Place (Holy of Holies) It was on the 10 th day of 7 th month in the Jewish calendar (the month of Tishrei) the High Priest performed a complex ritual - to purify the whole sanctuary of God and to make atonement for the sin of the people Let s remind ourselves what atonement means: [Powerpoint 2 Atonement] The Hebrew literally means: covering over with pitch like black bitumen or tar so it s like the sin cannot be seen anymore. Dictionary definition: Means reconciliation At-One-Ment At One with God (pause) So this special day was called Yom Kippur [Powerpoint 3 Yom Kippur] 2 Hebrew words Yom means Day and Kippur means Atonement Also known as Yom Tov Good Day Some of you might have that day printed on your calendar It was the most special day in the Israeli calendar and still is today The trouble is for the Jews today they don t have a Tent of Meeting or Temple to make sacrifices anymore they haven t had a temple since 70 AD when the Romans destroyed it Page 2 of 10

Today Jews see Yom Kippur as a Great and Special Day when they feel God s 3 closeness they rejoice in prayers and afflict themselves with 5 restrictions: no eating, no drinking, no washing for pleasure, no anointing of the body, no wearing leather shoes and no marital relations. Some Jews see these restrictions as raising them to a spiritual level so that they are almost like angels! Notice in the Bible passage there is no mention of this detail this is purely tradition. I hope you can see that Yom Kippur as the Jews celebrate it today is not as God described in Leviticus chapter 16 and it s more about what the people do than what God does! (pause) So - as much as Yom Kippur is a great day for all Jews Because of Jesus - we have 2 better days that Yom Kippur We have Good Friday when Jesus died on the cross for our sins And we have Easter Sunday when Jesus rose from the dead Let s explore 3 reasons why these 2 days Good Friday and Easter Sunday - are better days than Yom Kippur Better High Priest The first reason is because we have a better High Priest in Jesus. [Powerpoint 4 Heading - Better High Priest] How is Jesus a better High Priest? [Powerpoint 4a Jesus doesn t have to make a sacrifice for his own sin] Page 3 of 10

4 Well look at verse 6 Aaron had to make a sin offering for his own sin before he could make sacrifices for the people. Jesus doesn t have to do that because He is perfect in every way and because He is God! Also Aaron had to make a burnt offering for himself in verse 24 again Jesus doesn t have to do that He and the Father are one Also the High Priests of Israel held office until they died and then another took up office. [Powerpoint 4b permanent priesthood] But Jesus lives forever so He has a permanent priesthood (Heb 7:24) [Powerpoint 4c always interceding] And this has the benefit of saving people from their sin completely because Jesus always lives to intercede for His people (Heb 7:25) Better Sacrifice The second reason why Good Friday and Easter Sunday are better days than Yom Kippur Is because Jesus is a better sacrifice [Powerpoint 5 heading Better Sacrifice] How is Jesus sacrifice better? Well Aaron had to sacrifice 5 animals: 1 Ram for his own burnt offering 1 Ram for the people s burnt offering Page 4 of 10

1 young bull for his own sin offering 5 Then 2 goats for the people s sin offering 1 goat was killed for the Lord And the other goat was used as a scapegoat with all the sin of the people ceremonially passed onto the scapegoat by Aaron placing both his hands on the goat and then the goat was led out of the camp and this was symbolical of taking the sin as far away as possible from the people The scapegoat is like a garbage truck taking the sin outside the camp of Israel. Whereas Jesus covers all these animal sacrifices by offering His own body up as a sacrifice for sins and He removes sin as far as the east is from the west As the prophet Isaiah says in Isaiah 1:18: Come now, let us settle the matter," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. [Powerpoint 5a Jesus is the sacrifice] He doesn t need to make a sacrifice for his own sin as we said but he becomes the sacrifice for the people s sin He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world And Jesus sacrifice was not through the blood of goats and bulls which the writer of Hebrews says in Heb 10:4 cannot take away sin But can only make the people outwardly clean in Heb 9:13 Whereas Jesus blood cleanses our consciences from acts that lead to death so we may serve the living God (Heb 9:14) Page 5 of 10

[Powerpoint 5b His Blood poured out - can take away sin] 6 Aaron sprinkled the blood of the goat and bull on the Ark of the Covenant - But Jesus sacrifice was His own precious blood (Heb 9:25) which was poured out for the forgiveness of sins (Matt 26:28) [Powerpoint 5c Once for all] And Jesus sacrifice was a once and for all sacrifice (Heb 10:10) never to be repeated unlike the High Priests of Israel who did their sacrifices day after day and made special atonement year after year at Yom Kippur God told Aaron - Yom Kippur was a lasting ordinance By the fact that Jesus is a better High priest, who is perfect, who used his own blood as the sacrifice for sin, who lives forever, and who once needs to make the sacrifice once and for all in a permanent priesthood He has made His sacrifice a lasting ordinance far and above the sacrifice of Yom Kippur Better Sanctuary The third reason why Good Friday and Easter Sunday are better days than Yom Kippur Is because Jesus deals with a better sanctuary [Powerpoint 6 Heading - Better sanctuary] [Powerpoint 6a Copy] Page 6 of 10

7 We must realize that the sanctuary that the High Priests of Israel served in was a copy and shadow of what was in Heaven that s why God warned Moses to build it to the set pattern he prescribed! (Heb 8:5) [Powerpoint 6b sanctuary not made by human hands] But Jesus went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle (Heb 9:11) not made by human hands but by God s hands the tabernacle in Heaven! [Powerpoint 6c Most Holy Place eternal redemption] And Jesus entered the Most Holy Place once and for all through His blood to obtain eternal redemption for us (Heb 9:12) He doesn t have to keep re-entering the Most Holy Place year after year - He sits at the right hand of the Father in the Most Holy Place of Heaven Application for us So if we do have a better High Priest, with a better sacrifice, who has gone into a better Heavenly sanctuary and who intercedes for us How can we apply these truths to our lives today? [Powerpoint 7 Application Heading] Well just like the ancient Israelites we must come to our High Priest Jesus - knowing that we are sinful creatures in rebellion against God and needing cleansing. Page 7 of 10

8 In Leviticus 16:21 Aaron laid both his hands on the goat and confessed the sin of the people In the same way if we haven t done so already we need to lay our hands on Jesus so to speak and confess our sins and ask Jesus to take them from us He s more than willing to do that if we say sorry [Powerpoint 7a Confess] Maybe you are someone here today who hasn t confessed your sin to God and hasn t put your faith in Jesus how about making TODAY the Day of Atonement for you and you ask Jesus to take your sins away and trust in Him (pause) We must also realize that the Ancient Israelites access to God was restricted to the High Priest acting as a go-between and entering behind the curtain once a year and even then only under a smokescreen of incense so he didn t die. All that changed when Jesus died on the cross Matthew says in Matt 27:51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. At that point Jesus gave all of us direct access to God There s no need for priests or go-betweens No need to pray to Mary or a Saint or a departed loved one We can pray to God the Father directly [Powerpoint 7b Direct Access] There s no need for anymore sacrifices for our sins Jesus has done all that There s no need for us to do anything Just believe Jesus has done it for us! Page 8 of 10

9 When I began this morning I said the Jews still celebrate Yom Kippur and I said they had turned it into a day when then tried to make atonement for their own sins rather than relying on God to do that Leviticus 16 verse 31 does say the people are to treat Yom Kippur as a day of rest and deny themselves but this was meant as a response to the atonement that had been achieved for them through the sacrifices and it was never meant for them to work out their own atonement [Powerpoint 7c good works?] In the same way - if we re not careful we can start to fool ourselves that we can make atonement for our sins we can fool ourselves into thinking all the good works and good stuff we do somehow fixes our sin and make us good but that s rubbish! [Powerpoint 8 Heading] Instead of this foolish thinking we need a response of thankfulness The writer of Hebrews says this in Heb 10:22 [Powerpoint 8a Thanks/Sincere hearts] let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Page 9 of 10

[Powerpoint 8b Faith not works] 10 Friends, we need to remember that: It is by grace, you have been saved through faith (in Jesus) and this is not from yourselves, it is a gift of God not by works so that no one can boast (Eph 2:8-9) By all means do good works God s got them lined up for you Eph 2:10 but don t think they make you any better or fix your sin only Jesus can do that Because He is the Better High Priest, Better Sacrifice who has entered the Better Sanctuary [Powerpoint 8c Assurance] Oh and did I mention that as our sign out the front of the church says Jesus our hero died but that wasn t the end of the story Because on the 2 nd great day which we mentioned briefly Easter Sunday Our hero didn t stay dead He was raised from the dead And that gives us the assurance that if we have faith in His death and His resurrection from the dead we will have access to that Better Sanctuary where we can live with God forever Let s pray Page 10 of 10
