SOLEMN CHORAL EUCHARIST WITH PROCESSION FOR THE FEAST OF ST JAMES, APOSTLE AND MARTYR St James Anglican Church 173 King Street, Sydney (opposite Hyde Park Barracks) For more information visit or call SUNDAY 29 JULY :00am As Sydney s oldest church, St James is a place of soul-stirring worship, challenging preaching and fine music. We are a progressive community that welcomes all people regardless of age, race, sexual orientation or religion.

The Patronal Festival is the occasion on which our parish church celebrates the patron saint after whom we are named and, at the same time, celebrates the life, character and calling of this Christian community. James was the son of Zebedee and the elder brother of John; like his brother, he was a fisherman in Galilee with Zebedee, in partnership with Andrew and Peter. At the call of Jesus he left everything and followed him. James, the first of the Apostles to die, was martyred in Jerusalem in AD 43. According to legend, James had preached in Spain before his martyrdom and his body was taken to Compostela, a city in north-western Spain. He became the patron saint of Spain. His shrine was the most popular place of pilgrimage in Christendom after Rome and Jerusalem. The mosaic in the chancel floor depicts the insignia of St James. The emblems are the scallop shell of St James shrine at Compostela, the palm of martyrdom, together with the pilgrim s insignia of the staff, bag and broad-brimmed hat. On this Patronal Festival we celebrate our ongoing pilgrimage as God s people in this place. of all the ancient Spanish cities, the one that seems to be immobilised in a granite dream, immutable and eternal, is Santiago de Compostela It does not seem ancient but more eternal... But Compostela, immobilised in the Ecstasis of the pilgrims, joins all her stones in one unique prayer, and the chain of centuries has always, in its echoes, the same resonance. There, the hours are the same hour, eternally repeated under a weeping sky. Ramón del Valle-Inclán: La Lámpara Maravillosa Today we welcome The Reverend Canon Dr Colleen O Reilly to St James for our Patronal Festival. Colleen O Reilly is the Vicar of St George s Malvern in Melbourne s inner east and a Canon of St Paul s Cathedral. Originally from Sydney, she is a lifelong Anglican despite her name and was a Diocesan Reader before leaving Sydney in 1994 to become the Associate Dean of the Melbourne College of Divinity. Colleen was ordained in 1995 and works in theological education and parish ministry. She has lived in the UK and USA, studied in Sydney and San Francisco, and is a Fellow of the Sydney College of Divinity. Colleen has two sons, and three grandsons who live in London. She is married to the Rev d Walter McEntee, formerly Chaplain to Melbourne Girls Grammar and now long term locum priest of Burwood East parish. 2

ON THE WAY OF ST JAMES AND ITS PILGRIMS Everyone, then, must venerate St James in all places, he who comes to the aid of those who receive him in all places without delay Now we are going to talk about the Route of the Pilgrims. The pilgrim route is a very good thing, but it is narrow. For the road which leads us to life is narrow; on the other hand, the road which leads to death is broad and spacious. The pilgrim route is for those who are good: it is the lack of vices, the thwarting of the body, the increase of virtues, pardon for sins, sorrow for the penitent, the road of the righteous, love of the saints, faith in the resurrection and the reward of the blessed, a separation from hell, the protection of the heavens. It takes us away from luscious foods, it makes gluttonous fatness vanish, it restrains voluptuousness, constrains the appetites of the flesh which attack the fortress of Photo: Chris Shain the soul, cleanses the spirit, leads us to contemplation, humbles the haughty, raises up the lowly, loves poverty. It hates the reproach of those fuelled by greed. It loves, on the other hand, the person who gives to the poor. It rewards those who live simply and do good works; and, on the other hand, it does not pluck those who are stingy and wicked from the claws of sin. From the Codex Calixtinus, a medieval guide to the pilgrimage to Compostela. 3

GREETING The celebrant welcomes the congregation. Celebrant KYRIE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray, Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. Sung by the choirs During the singing of the Kyrie the altar is censed. WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART ( ) CORONATION MASS GREEK TEXT PRAYER BOOK TEXT Lord, have mercy Christ, have mercy Lord, have mercy CONFESSION Deacon Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. Jesus said: This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself. Let us then run our race, laying aside every weight and bringing our sins to the Lord in penitence and faith. Celebrant Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith, pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 7

Quoniam tu solus Sanctus. Tu solus Dominus. Tu solus Altissimus, Jesu Christe. Cum Sancto Spiritu in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. PRAYER BOOK TEXT Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One; you alone are the Lord; you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant Let us pray: O gracious God, whose apostle James left his father and all that he had, and without delay obeyed the call of your Son Jesus Christ: pour out upon the leaders of your Church the same spirit of self-denying service by which alone they may have true authority among your people; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. 8

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THE CHILDREN Celebrant And now I invite all children who are going to Kids@Church, with their parents if they wish, to come forward. The children, parents and Kids@Church leaders come forward and stand at the chancel steps. Celebrant Children of God, we acknowledge you and now we send you forth to Kids@Church. May the Scriptures light your way, may God s love fill your hearts with love, and may your lives be marked by hope and joy. Children We go on our way in the strength of Christ. Amen. The children walk in procession to the west porch and the congregation sings Please sit. Father welcomes all his children to his family through the Son; Father giving his salvation, life for ever has been won. In the water, in the word in his promise, be assured: those who are baptised and believe shall be born again. Father welcomes all his children to his family through the Son; Father giving his salvation, life for ever has been won. FIRST READING A reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 45 The word that the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Baruch son of Neriah, when he wrote these words in a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah of Judah: Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to you, O Baruch: You said, Woe is me! The Lord has added sorrow to my pain; I am weary 9

with my groaning, and I find no rest. Thus you shall say to him, Thus says the Lord: I am going to break down what I have built, and pluck up what I have planted that is, the whole land. And you, do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for I am going to bring disaster upon all flesh, says the Lord; but I will give you your life as a prize of war in every place to which you may go. A silence for reflection follows the reading, after which is said Reader 10 For the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. PSALM 126 Sung by the choirs to a chant by Dr D. M. Garrett. When the Lord turned again the captivity of Sion: then were we like unto them that dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter: and our tongue with joy. Then said they among the heathen: The Lord hath done great things for them. Yea, the Lord hath done great things for us already: whereof we rejoice. Turn our captivity, O Lord: as the rivers in the south. They that sow in tears: shall reap in joy. He that now goeth on his way weeping, and beareth forth good seed: shall doubtless come again with joy, and bring his sheaves with him. SECOND READING A reading from The Acts of the Apostles 11: 27 12: 3 Prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. One of them named Agabus stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine over all the world; and this took place during the reign of Claudius. The disciples determined that according to their ability, each would send relief to the believers living in Judea; this they did, sending it to the elders by Barnabas and Saul. About that time King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword. After he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the festival of Unleavened Bread.) A silence for reflection follows the reading, after which is said Reader For the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

Please stand. HYMN Give me the wings of faith to rise within the veil, and see the saints above, how great their joys, how bright their glories be. Once they were mourning here below, and wet their couch with tears; they wrestled hard, as we do now, with sins and doubts and fears. I ask them whence their victory came; they, with united breath, ascribe their conquest to the Lamb, their triumph to his death. They marked the footsteps that he trod, his zeal inspired their breast, and, following their incarnate God, possess the promised rest. Our glorious Leader claims our praise for his own pattern given; while the long cloud of witnesses show the same path to heaven. Words: Isaac Watts ( ) Music: SONG 67 Melody and Bass by Orlando Gibbons ( ) from E. Prys s Llyfr y Psalman, 1621 [NEH 225 i] GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Please remain standing and turn to face the Gospel reader. Cantor I have chosen you from the world, says the Lord, to go and bear fruit that will last. eluia! 11

GOSPEL READING MATTHEW 20: Deacon A reading from the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St Matthew. The mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favour of him. And he said to her, What do you want? She said to him, Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom. But Jesus answered, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink? They said to him, We are able. He said to them, You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father. When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. A silence for reflection follows the reading, after which is said Deacon For the Gospel of the Lord, SERMON The Rev d Canon Dr Colleen O Reilly 12

NICENE CREED Please stand. 13

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Deacon Let us pray for the world and for the church. Please either kneel or sit. At the conclusion of each prayer Intercessor Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. The prayers conclude with the following: Deacon Please stand. Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. GREETING OF PEACE Celebrant Now in union with Christ Jesus, you who were once far off have been brought near through the shedding of Christ s blood; for he is our peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. We exchange a greeting of Christ s peace with those near to us. OFFERTORY HYMN DURING WHICH A COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH S MINISTRY WILL BE RECEIVED Who are these, like stars appearing, these before God s throne who stand? Each a golden crown is wearing; who are all this glorious band? eluya, hark! they sing, praising loud their heavenly King. 14

Who are these of dazzling brightness, these in God s own truth arrayed, clad in robes of purest whiteness, robes whose lustre ne er shall fade, ne er be touched by time s rude hand whence comes all this glorious band? These are they who have contended for their Saviour s honour long, wrestling on till life was ended, following not the sinful throng; these, who well the fight sustained, triumph through the Lamb have gained. These are they whose hearts were riven, sore with woe and anguish tried, who in prayer full oft have striven with the God they glorified; now, their painful conflict o er God has bid them weep no more. These like priests have watched and waited, offering up to Christ their will, soul and body consecrated, day and night to serve him still: now, in God s most holy place blest they stand before his face. Words: German, H.T. Schenck ( ) Tr Frances Cox ( ) Music: ALL SAINTS Melody from Geistreiches Gesangbuch Darmstadt 1698 adapted by W. H. Monk ( ) [NEH 231] When the Gifts have been prepared, they are presented. Celebrant Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts of bread and wine to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever. 15

SURSUM CORDA GREAT THANKSGIVING Celebrant glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, ever-living God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. And now we give you thanks because you have called us into the fellowship of James and all your saints, and set before us the example of their witness and the fruit of your Spirit in their lives. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: SANCTUS AND BENEDICTUS Sung by the choirs LATIN TEXT Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Osanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Osanna in excelsis. MOZART CORONATION MASS PRAYER BOOK TEXT Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. 16

Celebrant Deacon Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ s body and blood. On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise: The bell is rung, a silence is kept, and the people remain standing as the Thanksgiving continues. 17

LORD S PRAYER Celebrant As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray: BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND INVITATION TO COMMUNION The celebrant breaks the Eucharistic bread and says We break this bread to share in the Body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. AGNUS DEI Sung by the choirs LATIN TEXT Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem. MOZART CORONATION MASS PRAYER BOOK TEXT Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us your peace. Deacon Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed. 18

Words: Isaac Watts ( ) Music: Sir Ernest Bullock ( ) Following the motet, the congregation is invited to join in the singing of the communion hymn. COMMUNION HYMN In our day of thanksgiving one psalm let us offer for the saints who before us have found their reward; when the shadow of death fell upon them, we sorrowed, but now we rejoice that they rest in the Lord. In the morning of life, and at noon, and at even, he called them away from our worship below; but not till his love, at the font and the altar, had girt them with grace for the way they should go. These stones that have echoed their praises are holy, and dear is the ground where their feet have once trod; yet here they confessed they were strangers and pilgrims, and still they were seeking the city of God. Continued over... 19

Sing praise then, for all who here sought and here found him, whose journey is ended, whose perils are past, they believed in the Light; and its glory is round them, where the clouds of earth s sorrow are lifted at last. It would not really matter what type of sock but would be very much appreciated by our guests who are in the main males. There may even be a new pair lurking in your draw which will be opened one day! Similarly do you have a new beanie or a pair of new gloves to spare? We are going to make each of the next three Sundays a SOCK, BEANIE & GLOVES day. A special box will be placed in the baptistry each Sunday from this week on for three weeks. 25
