2 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time! Page 2 SPIRITUAL READING & REFLECTION Next Sunday s Gospel Reading Matthew 5: Jesus said to his disciples: You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one as well. If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand over your cloak as well. Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go for two miles. Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow. persecute you, You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for t h o s e w h o that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have? Do not the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brothers only, what is unusual about that? Do not the pagans do the same? So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect. Saints of the Week Cyril, monk, and Methodius, bishop February 14 th Constantine, already burdened by many hardships, became ill. At one point during his extended illness, he experienced a vision of God and began to sing this verse: My spirit rejoiced and my heart exulted because they told me we shall go into the house of the Lord. Afterward he remained dressed in the vestments that were to be venerated later, and rejoiced for an entire day, saying: From now on, I am not the servant of the emperor or of any man on earth, but of almighty God alone. Before, I was dead, now I am alive and I shall live for ever. Amen. The following day, he assumed the monastic habit and took the religious name Cyril. He lived the life of a monk for fifty days. When the time came for him to set out from this world to the peace of his heavenly homeland, he prayed to God with his hands outstretched and his eyes filled with tears: O Lord, my God, you have created the choirs of angels and spiritual powers; you have stretched forth the heavens and established the earth, creating all that exists from nothing. You hear those who obey your will and keep your commands in holy fear. Hear my prayer and protect your faithful people, for you have established me as their unsuitable and unworthy servant. Keep them free from harm and the worldly cunning of those who blaspheme you. Build up your Church and gather all into unity. Make your people known for the unity and profession of their faith. Inspire the hearts of your people with your word and your teaching. You called us to preach the Gospel of your Christ and to encourage them to lives and works pleasing to you. I now return to you, your people, your gift to me. Direct them with your powerful right hand, and protect them under the shadow of your wings. May all praise and glorify your name, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. Once he had exchanged the gift of peace with everyone, he said: Blessed be God, who did not hand us over to our invisible enemy, but freed us from his snare and delivered us from perdition. He then fell asleep in the Lord at the age of forty-two. The Patriarch commanded all those in Rome, both the Greeks and Romans, to gather for his funeral. They were to chant over him together and carry candles; they were to celebrate his funeral as if he had been a pope. This they did. 8 St. John the Baptist Catholic Church To Sing or Not to Sing Here s the Deal Singing at Holy Mass is a noble part of the celebration of the sacrifice of the altar. Over the past 40ish years we have come to settle on a format for Holy Mass that is not necessarily what we are requested to have by the Second Vatican Council. There is a hierarchy of singing, which shouldn t be a surprise considering Catholics have a hierarchy for everything! The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) explains that the diocese of the United States of America employs four options for the entrance chant: 1. the antiphon from the Roman Missal or the Psalm from the Roman Gradual as set to music there or in another musical setting; 2. the seasonal antiphon and Psalm of the Simple Gradual; 3. a song from another collection of psalms and antiphons, approved by the Conference of Bishops or the Diocesan Bishop, including psalms arranged in responsorial or metrical forms; 4. a suitable liturgical song similarly approved by the Conference of Bishops or the Diocesan Bishop. GIRM Footnote: "Care must be taken to ensure the quality, both of the texts and of the melodies, so that what is proposed today as new and creative will conform to liturgical requirements and be worthy of the Church's tradition which, in the field of sacred music, boasts a priceless heritage." from Dies Domini, Pope John Paul II, 31 May 1998, #50] So, what about hymns? Unfortunately, in the past 40ish years good intentioned hymn writers have written hymns that do not conform to the musical, theological, or liturgical needs of the Church but they are entertaining. The old hymns of our faith do, however fall into the necessary categories that lead the faithful to a richer prayer experience. Are all the contemporary hymns written in a poor fashion? Of course not. Many faithful writers are doing their best to provide the modern Church with music that elevates our intellectual and spiritual participation during mass. To be exposed to these hymns does require the faithful to be open to new music. There is no better time to be open than now since very soon the new translations of the mass ordinary will require a change of words and music. Are hymns actually necessary? No. The above hierarchy of music is given to us for the offertory and communion times as well. Many liturgies are using option one more and more often and using hymns sparingly. So, what are we supposed to sing? The parts of the liturgy that the Church asks us to sing, and I add with gusto, are the Lord have mercy, the acclamations and psalms, the Holy, and the Lamb of God. The Gloria has the option of being sung by the choir with the congregation or by the choir alone. Also, if you are in a parish where the priest is comfortable chanting the dialogue parts The Lord be with you etc., then these are places for you to sing as well. So you see, there are many places for the faithful to sing at mass. If hymns are provided in the liturgy please always know that you are invited to sing them with gusto whether the invitation is direct or not. Most churches have number boards so if a cantor is trying to preserve the flow of the mass by announcing only at the beginning and you happen to arrive after that time, please sing. Grab onto those hymns and mass parts like they are special gifts handed to you through the ages by a great grandparent that wanted you to know how special this event is... because they are.
