2 TWENTY NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 21, 2018 TOO MUCH INFORMATION! There is a common expression: Too much information! We usually use it when people tell us details about their lives that we don t want or need to know. Today, when James and John ask Jesus a simple question, making their request for places of honor in the kingdom, a simple answer might have been in order. Instead, as he often does, Jesus answers a question with a question; today it s about drinking the cup of suffering. Then, once the others are indignant over James and John s outrageous request, he proceeds to give them what may have been too much information for followers who were simply interested in the pursuit of glory. But this information, though it can sometimes seem too much for us, is essential for our lives as disciples. In Isaiah, in Hebrews, and in Mark today, we learn this information. It is in suffering, in weakness, in self-giving service to others, that we come to understand the kingdom. It is the information we need to find our place and come to be honored in the reign of God. Faith and Traditions TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Next Sunday, October 28, 2018 is Priesthood Sunday, a special day set aside to honor priesthood in the United States. It is a day to reflect upon and affirm the role of the priesthood in the life of the Church as a central one. Priesthood Sunday specifically honors priests, without whom the Holy Sacraments could not be conferred for a single day out of the 365 days of the year during which they tirelessly serve their parishes. PRAYER FOR PRIESTS Gracious and loving God, we thank you for the gift of our priests. Through them, we experience your presence in the sacraments. Help our priests to be strong in their vocation. Set their souls on fire with love for your people. Grant them the wisdom, understanding, and strength they need to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Inspire them with the vision of your Kingdom. Give them the words they need to spread the Gospel. Allow them to experience joy in their ministry. Help them to become instruments of your divine grace. We ask this through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns as our Eternal Priest. Amen. As election campaigns move into high gear, sometimes the phrase the Catholic vote is heard. It s an interesting concept, since Catholics started out in this country as a very fragile group: fewer than forty thousand of us at the time of the first census in 1790, and only about 2 percent of the population by It was a priestless church for all intents and purposes, lay-led clusters of Catholics waiting patiently for the occasional visit of a priest, sustained by gathering when they could on Sunday for devotional prayer like litanies and the rosary. They tried to hold on to their ancestral faith as best they could. Archbishop Jean-Louis Cheverus told one family in Maine to every day say your prayers on your knees with affection, and every Sunday gather to hear the Gospel, to pray in common, and to quiz the children on the catechism. Inevitably, some became Protestant, but many more stayed Catholic from generation to generation, with very little encouragement or sacramental ministry from the clergy. Archbishop John Carroll, the first American bishop, tried to make Church law flexible: shortening the length of the fast before Communion, easing the Lenten fast, and even relaxing the rule of Sabbath rest at harvest time. Catholicism in England had been quietly sustained in this way for two centuries, and the first American Catholics carried on as had their ancestors, providing a fertile soil for the unprecedented success and phenomenal growth of the Church in our country. 2

This year s Fall Festival is going to be even bigger and better and we are welcoming the community of Fernandina to join us! Our music headliner this year is our very own Nassau Community Band who will be on stage and provide us with an evening of wonderful fun, nostalgic and spooky music! Let the little one s trunk or treat (cash prizes for best decorated vehicle trunks), go to the Scary Science table, participate in delicious cake walks, play in the bounce houses and other wonderful activities. SMA will once again be selling awesome food and the Men s Club will be hosting the adults in the Beer and Wine Garden! All are Welcome. Trunk or Treat Trunks Needed! Calling all parishioners to join us at the Fall Festival and decorate a vehicle trunk for the children to trick or treat from! We have had some Amazing trunks in the past years and are looking for more. Cash prizes for 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd place will be awarded! CASINO NIGHT FUND-RAISING EVENT St. Michael Men s Club will again hold a Casino Night Fund -raising Event on the evening of Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the Parish Hall. 100% of net proceeds will be donated to St. Michael Academy. Knowledge is important. Please join the Respect Life and Health Ministries for a workshop on Hospice Care and How to Prepare this Monday, Oct. 22nd. Our speaker is Jim Monahan, M.Ed. ACHE Vice President Education and Community Engagement Community Hospice and Palliative Care. Light refreshments will be served at 5:30 followed by a workshop at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. CONFIRMATION PREPARATION Prayers of Intercession are petitions that beseech God on behalf of others. We are at once participants in Christ s role as our true Intercessor as well as acting as members of the Communion of Saints (CF. CCC ). With this in mind, we ask that you please keep our 16 students that are preparing for Confirmation, in your prayers. Our prayers are that the students grow in faith and embrace their roles as disciples of Jesus Christ. 4
