1 Newsletter of Peace Lutheran Church Words of Peace A LENTEN JOURNEY Newsletter of Peace Lutheran Church Return from Exile Historically, Lent developed as a season of preparation for Holy Baptism. Liturgically and theologically, Lent is the Church s refocus on the significance of Baptism. Remembering our baptism daily reminds us of the drowning of the old Adam in us through contrition and repentance which characterizes the entire Christian life. That life of discipleship and continual renewal is intensified during the Lenten season as a renewal of faith and life in Christ. Lent does its job best when it brings the cross to sinners and sinners to the cross of Christ as the fountain and source of all forgiveness, life, and salvation. It is a journey we make as we travel with Christ from the Mount of Transfiguration to Jerusalem, where he will face the cross and the grave for our sake. Our Lenten theme this year focuses on that journey, but maybe not in the usual way we walk it. The beginning of our journey is exile in the wilderness of FEBRUARY 2018 February March April 2/2 2/10 2/11 2/13 2/14 2/21 2/28 3/3 3/7 3/14 3/21 3/25 3/29 3/30 4/1 4/6 4/10 4/12 4/14 4/17 4/21 F&FF LoveFest Voters Meeting SuperTuesday Ash Wednesday F&FF Palm Sunday Maundy Thurs. 2 of sin and death. From the first sin in the first garden, we have been exiled into the wilderness where we have wandered without any ability on our own to find our way out. But every journey also has a destination. Our return from exile brings us into the promised land, the perfect place, the new garden, the courts of heaven the ultimate destination which was established for us by Jesus death and resurrection. Seeing where our journey takes us turns our sorrow to joy, but we can never forget what Jesus faced to make that happy ending possible. Each leg of our midweek journey this year will begin in the Old Testament and continue in the New Testament, pointing us to the joy that is ours on his account. We ll contemplate the reality of our earthly journey with our eyes always fixed on its destination the empty tomb and the open gates of everlasting life. We ll be reminded each week that it is a journey we don t walk alone. Join us on this journey. Walk it with us each Wednesday night. Our journey begins at 7:00 p.m. on February 14 th, Ash Wednesday, with a special service of repentance that includes the imposition of ashes and Holy Communion. On the Wednesdays that follow we ll gather at 6:00 p.m. for a followed by a service of evening prayer at 7:00 p.m. It s a journey we re all making. A journey of our own making really that will lead us one day to that place of God s making in heaven, a place beyond our imagination. Join us. Let s walk it together. If you don t drive at night and need a ride, call the church office and we ll do our best to get you here. May God bless our Lenten journey together. - Pastor Rob And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. - Pastor -MATTHEW Rob 6:16 Gi veit up for LENT Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, the seventh Wednesday before Easter. The last day before Lent has become the last fling before the solitude of Lent. This day may be called Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday, Carnival or Fasching. By custom, we fast during Lent by abstaining from eating meat during Lent. This is why some refer to the festival Carnival which is Latin for Farewell to Meat. The Lenten fast is relaxed on weekends in honor of Saturday and Sunday. The custom is to mark the season of Lent by giving up some things and taking on others. Both can serve to mark the seal as a holy time of preparation. Some examples of things people given up include sweets, meat for all or some meals, and alcohol. In most cases, giving up something for Lent can be made more meaningful by using the money or time for another purpose. For example, meal times on fast days could be spent in prayer. Another example is that if you give up meat with the extra money going to LCMS Lutheran World Relief or your local food pantry. Some things added during Lent are daily Bible reading, fasting on Fridays, time for prayer, increasing our financial offerings, attending extra worship services, taking a Bible course of study or joining a Bible study with your fellow worshipers. What better reason to join your fellow Peace members at the soup suppers every Wednesday evening beginning the week following Ash Wednesday. Of course, we should all attend the Ash Wednesday service. The soup suppers begin at 6pm followed by the worship service at 7pm. It is an excellent way to prepare for Easter. Pastor Rob along with Bob Hutchinson and Mike Schultze provide a very meaningful series during the season of Lent. Consider what Christ has done for you. He spent 40 days in the wilderness undergoing temptation by the devil. Doesn t it seem right that we should all do what little we can to enrich and provide more meaning in our faith? We look forward to seeing you all at church during Lent both on Sundays and Wednesdays. We can also enjoy the excellent soups together. May God continue to richly bless you all every day. - Your Peace Elders Page!2
