9 Synaxarion On September 16 Holy Orthodox Church we contue celebrate Elevation Holy Cross. We commemorate holy glorious Greatmartyr Euphemia All-praised, along with Martyrs Vicr Sosnes Chalcedon, executioners who believed Christ through her. Thou who was sla by a bear s jaw for God thy Maker, Art be crowned, O Euphemia, with laudations. On sixteenth a bear Euphemia slew. Euphemia was a beautiful virg body soul. When Proconsul Priscus held a feast fered sacrifices Ares Chalcedon, 49 Christians avoided this foul sacrificial ferg hid mselves. However, y were discovered brought before Priscus, cludg Euphemia. When arrogant Priscus asked m why y defied imperial decree, y replied that y would defy any comm given by him or emperor contrary God Heaven. For 19 consecutive days, Priscus imposed various rtures on m. On twentieth day he separated Euphemia from ors began flatter her for her beauty, attemptg w her over idolatry. As his flattery was va, he ordered that virg be rtured aga, yet she was preserved by power God. Upon seeg this, two soldiers Vicr Sosnes came believe Christ, for which y were thrown wild beasts, thus gloriously ended ir earthly lives. Euphemia was fally thrown wild beasts, with a prayer thanksgivg God, gave up her spirit year 304. On this day, we also commemorate Martyr Melita Marcianopolis Thrace. By tercessions Sats, O Christ God, have mercy upon us. Amen.
10 Protectg Church from Falsehood Heresy by Fr. Thomas Hopko Near end first century on second century, many false writgs about Christ were produced. Some se were so-called apocryphal writgs (not be confused with Old Testament Apocrypha), or pseudepigrapha (see volume one on Scripture). These writgs, each one usually bearg name an Apostle or anor proment New Testament figure an attempt give it more authority, troduced Christian circles many fanciful, legendary sries about childhood Christ, life Virg Mary, activities Apostles. Toger with pseudepigrapha, re also appeared false teachgs Gnosticism, a group related heresies which sought transform Christianity a kd spiritualistic, dualistic, tellectualistic philosophy (see Scripture). The first great Church Fars, Sat Irenaeus, Bishop Lyons (c. 130 c. 200), wrote a monumental work called Agast Heresies, which powerfully refuted various forms Gnosticism. In this work, Sat Irenaeus emphasized three crucial ways by which distguish heretical groups from true Christian Churches. First, all true Churches, no matter where y are located, hold same basic doctres, known ger as rule faith. In contrast, various Gnostic groups disagree among mselves ir beliefs. Second, all auntic Churches can trace ir origs back one origal Apostles, with ir bishops comg down direct descent from that Apostle; this is known as aposlic succession. The Gnostic groups, however, could not claim a similar leage back Apostles. Third, whereas various Gnostic groups each had ir own writgs which y followed, true Churches only considered Gospels accordg Evangelists Matw, Mark, Luke, John be dively spired. Sat Irenaeus s strong affirmation se four Gospels helped solidify first crucial step very long tremendously important process by which organized Church selected 27 books which would eventually comprise New Testament Scriptures. In this canonization process Church had determe which many writgs circulatg among various Christian communities were be accepted as Scripture, which ones were be rejected. The canonization process was not completed until end 4th century. In fact, earliest list exactly 27 New Testament books
11 that we have day was not compiled until 367 A.D. This list, drawn up by Sat Athanasius Great, was based on usage his Church Alexria, Egypt. Anor dangerous threat stability tegrity Church 2nd century arose about year 160 central Asia Mor sect known as Montanism. This strict, rigorist, fundamentalistic group arose partly protest what was perceived as a growg laxity spiritual fervor moral purity among majority Christians. Like many such groups throughout Christian hisry, y were overly apocalyptic, beg convced that Christ would return ir own day. And y also had an over-emphasis on supernatural manifestations such as prophecy, probably also speakg ngues. Montanism was founded by a man named Montanus, who claimed that he his two prophetesses, Priscilla Maximilla, were chosen struments for dawng End Times a new, purer, more spiritually advanced Age Spirit. However, y prophesied a strange, frenzied way, contrary Sat Paul s junctions 1 Cor Also, some ir prophetic messages contradicted Gospels Sat Paul s epistles for stance, y forbade fleeg from persecution (violatg Christ s words Mt 24.16); y strictly prohibited second marriages (supersedg Sat Paul s words 1 Cor Tim 5.14). For se reasons, also because movement s judgmentalism divisiveness, Church condemned Montanism several local councils Asia Mor by year 200. Excerpt from The Orthodox Faith, Vol. 2: Worship.
