2 2 Performance Notes In February 1999, Richard Clarke commissioned this new text on Holst s great tune THAXTD for his choir to sg at aster. Let us unpack its meang order to sg with understg. begs history, period of transition after Jesus death. The first verse connects us, believers of present day, with Lord s followers durg that time of confusion uncertaty: Our Lord is dead. What will we do now? Will Romans kill us too? John s gospel relates that disciples had locked doors of place where y were for fear (Jn. 20:19). It could well have been same upper room where y had shared his Last Supper. In verse two, women discovered empty tomb. All f gospels agree on disciples reluctance to believe Lord had risen; story seemed like nonsense ( dead do not arise ), besides, who could believe hysterical women? Yet who had stood by cross? Who had braved soldiers to anot Lord s body tomb? The men had fled hid. The evangelists mselves couldn t get names of women straight, except for Mary Magdalene. We present-day Christians may also be slow to believe, but verse two transitions from history to a strong, personal affirmation of faith risen Lord, present here bread we community. Christ has died is risen. Though ody of Christ is still beg crucified wherever re is war or violence or justice, death is not end. We who have known sorrow know delight. We rise with Christ. We rejoice. M.D.R. This beautiful descriptive text is set to a noble sturdy tune that carries weight of se most holy events of faith. Take y time. Sg carefully from depths of y personal experience of Christ. Feel sorrow despair (verse 1); bright light of early morng dawn (verse 2); supreme joy of new life (verse 3). Use dicated dynamics to ir fullest extent. The build from verse 1 to 3 is a gradual crescendo, a musical expression of resurrection.
