4 A n n o u n c e m e n t s Welcome to the Church in the Forest on this Pentecost Sunday, a time when we look to the Spirit of God to not only be present in our midst, but ruling in our hearts. Therefore, with expectation and faith let us be open to the Divine Spirit, and to God be the glory! If you are a visitor welcome, and please accept the sincere invitation to return anytime. The common denominator among brass instruments is this: you apply your lips to one end, you blow, and sound comes out the other end. There are no reeds to whittle (as, for example, with an oboe); there is only your embouchure, which you can carry with you, and no one will ever know, not even airport security, where they can look right through your clothes, in case nobody ever told you. The trumpet can soar above the orchestra WAY above when the player is in that frame of mind. Composers with no taste for mutiny anticipate this zest for life and provide opportunities. Ask a young, male fighter pilot what instrument he plays or would like to play. Bingo! Ask a young lady what instrument she would most like to hear, and guess what. Young, male fighter pilots are not stupid. The French horn is a triumph of artistic whimsy over sensible plumbing. Mozart knew what he was doing when he wrote for it, which in its modern form, with valves, has an astonishing vocabulary of musical beauty. From the mouthpiece to the bell, the sound follows such a complex path (up to twelve feet long), we can hear and share the pleasure it must feel to reach the freedom of open air. The trombone is a long brass instrument with a moveable slide, and its timbre is among the most easily recognizable in band or orchestra. With its wide range of mood, from wah-wah to melodic super-legato, it spreads a gorgeous rainbow over any audience. Young ladies sometimes review earlier decisions, made in haste, and male trombone players know this.
