Rolland To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; my God, I put my trust in you; let me not be humiliated, nor let my enemies triumph over me. Let none who look to you be put to shame; let the treacherous be disappointed in their schemes. Show me your ways, O Lord, and teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long. Remember, O Lord, your compassion and love, for they are from everlasting. Remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions; remember me according to your love and for the sake of your goodness, O Lord. 4 A n n o u n c e m e n t s As we come into the summer months of more fog than we care to have, we still are rejoicing in that so many of our friends from Texas and other sweltering places are here to brighten our foggy days. Welcome to one-and-all. It is always a delight and privilege to have you worship here at the Church in the Forest where the door is wide open to receive us all with our different church and theological backgrounds. We are here as one people to worship God. If you are a visitor, please let us know of your presence by filling out the visitor card, which can be found in the bible rack of each pew, and then placing it in the offering plate when it is passed to you. If you would like to join the prayer group, or have a prayer request, please let us know that by using the visitor card for that purpose as well. Interested in uniting with the Church in the Forest? Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance; Govern and uphold them, now and always. Day by day we bless you; We praise your Name for ever. American Folk Hymn Sinners may repent, but stupid is forever, paraphrases a remark by Coco Chanel. The Categories of life may not be quite so precisely drawn, which may be just as well. Because some obsessive person will pigeonhole you, depend on it, if a Category is available. John Newton led a life splotched with danger and physical pain against a background of really bad judgement. If this sounds like a normal teenager, you should know more: His mother died when he was seven. From then on he oscillated between the high seas and boarding houses, sinking deeply into sin. (If I could find out what the exact sin was, I d tell you.) He deserted from the British Navy, was flogged, imprisoned, forced back onto a ship, and nearly died when a terrible storm shattered the ship. At that moment, he decided on his Category, and stuck to it, becoming one of the most powerful evangelical preachers in British history and the author of hundreds of hymns, including, Amazing Grace. Here is a lovely verse he added, which, unaccountably, you don t usually hear: The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, the sun forbear to shine; But God, Who called me here below, shall be forever mine.
