3 ORDER OF SERVICE All stand at the entrance of the Choirs and Clergy. Those unable to stand for any length of time throughout the service are invited to be seated. INTROIT Domine Jesu Christe, qui me creasti, redemisti, et preordinasti ad hoc quod sum, tu scis quid de me facere vis: fac de me secundum voluntatem tuam, cum misericordia. Amen. O Lord Jesus Christ, who hast created and redeemed me, and hast brought me unto that which now I am; thou knowest what thou wouldest do with me: do with me according to thy will, for thy tender mercy s sake. BIDDING PRAYER Dean: Beloved, we are come together in the presence of Almighty God and of the whole company of heaven, to offer unto him, through our Lord Jesus Christ, our worship and praise and thanksgiving; to make confession of our sins; to pray, as well for others as for ourselves. Wherefore let us remember God s presence with us now.

FIRST LESSON 1 Samuel Read by the Provost of King s College. Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the LORD. And the priest s custom with the people was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the priest s servant came, while the flesh was in seething, with a fleshhook of three teeth in his hand; And he

6 struck it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fleshhook brought up the priest took for himself. So they did in Shiloh unto all the Israelites that came thither. Also before they burnt the fat, the priest s servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest; for he will not have sodden flesh of thee, but raw. And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him, Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force. Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the LORD: for men abhorred the offering of the LORD. But Samuel ministered before the LORD, being a child, girded with a linen ephod. Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, The LORD give thee seed of this woman for the loan which is lent to the LORD. And they went unto their own home. And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the LORD. Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people. Nay, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: ye make the LORD s people to transgress. If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them. And the child Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with the LORD, and also with men. 7 MAGNIFICAT Collegium Regale Howells My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders, And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority? And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me: The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not? But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet. And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was.

8 And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. Here endeth the Second Lesson. After a pause, all stand with the Choirs. For mine eyes have seen: thy salvation; Which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel. CREED Priest All I believe in God I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried: he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the Holy catholick Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

COLLECTS Chaplain O God, the protector of all that trust in thee, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy; Increase and multiply upon us thy mercy; that, thou being our ruler and guide, we may so pass through things temporal, that we finally lose not the things eternal: Grant this, O heavenly Father, for Jesus Christ s sake our Lord. O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both, our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

11 ANTHEM I was glad when they said unto me we will go into the house of the Lord. Our feet shall stand in thy gates, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem is builded as a city that is at unity in itself. Words, Psalm 122 Music, C H H Parry PRAYERS Dean Let us pray In our prayers we give thanks to Almighty God for the beauty and dignity of this Chapel, and for the vision of God; truth and love that we glimpse through our worship here. We pray God s continued blessing on this place and all who minister, study and visit, may we be true to the vision of our Founder, King Henry VI, and continue to encourage in others as in ourselves the virtues of kindness and compassion, and find ways to be obedient to Christ s commandment to love both our neighbours and our enemies All Lord in thy mercy. Amen.

12 A prayer of Benjamin Whichcote, Provost of King s in the seventeenth century, that we might be shaped by our faith and worship. All Let the light of truth, and the help of grace, be vital principles of action in us; that we may, in the time of life, attain the ends for which we live; and that our religion, which begins in knowledge, may proceed in action, settle in temper, and end in happiness: that we may make it the work and business of our lives, to reconcile the temper of our spirits to the rule of righteousness; and to incorporate the principles of our religion into the complexion of our minds; that what we attribute to God, as his moral excellencies and perfections; we may propose to our selves, as matter of practice and imitation; and that what is our best employment in this world, and will be our only employment in the next, may be our free choice, and our transcendent pleasure. Amen. And finally, a prayer written by Brooke Foss Westcott, the first Professorial Fellow of this College, in which we pray for the guidance in the way of truth. All We beseech thee, O God, the God of Truth, that what we know not of things we ought to know, thou wilt teach us. That what we know of Truth, thou wilt keep us therein. That what we are mistaken in, as men must be, thou wilt correct. That at whatsoever things we stumble, thou wilt yet establish us. And from all things that are false, and from all knowledge that would be hurtful, thou wilt ever-more defend us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. All stand.
