2 WE GATHER When Amos told what he saw when God held up the plumb line of justice next to Israel-that the poor were being trampled-he was a threat to the power of priests and king. John the Baptist also spoke truth to power; and Herod had him beheaded. In Herod s fear that Jesus is John returned from the dead, we may hear hope for the oppressed: that all the prophets killed through the ages are alive in Jesus. P: Trusting in the word of life given in baptism and the love of God poured into our hearts, we gather this day with faith and joy to worship in the name of (+) the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. OPENING INVOCATION P: This is the day that the Lord has made! C: Let us rejoice and be glad in it! P: Almighty God, we pray for your blessing on the church in this place. C: May we worship you in spirit and truth. P: Here may the faithful find salvation, C: and the careless be awakened. P: Here may the doubting find faith, C: and the anxious be encouraged. P: Here may the tempted find help, C: and the sorrowful find comfort. P: Here may the weary find rest, C: and the strong be renewed. P: Here may all people find consolation C: and your servants be inspired. P: Fill our worship with your grace, Lord Jesus Christ, C: that every thought, word, and deed may be acceptable to you, our Rock and our Redeemer. P: This is the day that the Lord has made! 5 P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But we know that nothing is able to separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ. Therefore, if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Let us then open ourselves to the Lord and each other and confess our sins in penitence, faith, and hope. O most merciful God, C: we confess that we remain captive to doubt and fear, bound by the ways that lead to death. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS P: Hear the good news! In raising Jesus from the grave, God shatters the power of sin and death. You are no longer captives, but are set free. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all of your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Death has been swallowed up in victory. Even when we were dead through our trespasses, God has made us alive together with Christ by nailing those trespasses to the cross by grace we have been saved. Go, rejoicing in the knowledge of this salvation to serve God and one another. C: Thanks be to God! Amen. SALUTATION AND PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. 6 FIRST LESSON Amos 7:7-15 Amos was not the kind of prophet attached to temples or royal courts. Rather, he was an ordinary farmer from Judah (the southern kingdom) called by God to speak to Israel (the northern kingdom). God's word of judgment through Amos conflicted with the king s court prophet Amaziah, whom Amos encountered at Bethel. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God! PSALM 85:8-13 6

7 SECOND LESSON Ephesians 1:3-14 In Jesus, all of God s plans and purposes have been made known as heaven and earth are united in Christ. Through Jesus, we have been chosen as God s children and have been promised eternal salvation. L: This is the Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God! ^ ALLELUIA VERSE ^ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE GOSPEL ^READING OF THE GOSPEL Mark 6:14-29 As Jesus and his disciples begin to attract attention, Mark recalls the story of John the Baptist s martyrdom. Like John, Jesus and his disciples will also suffer at the hands of those opposed to the gospel of salvation. ^RESPONSE TO THE GOSPEL 7

8 ^CONFESSION OF FAITH I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. The Apostles Creed I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 8
