A hundred years or so before Christ, the Book of Wisdom points to the kind of teachings a just person such as Jesus would produce and the death that would result at the hands of the wicked. Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us and Let us condemn him to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him. When we are feeling set upon, we can cry out with Psalm 54, O God, by your name save me, and by your might defend my cause. With Jesus, we often suffer from the contempt of others, and here we have assurance of God s help in our need. Behold, God is my helper; the Lord sustains my life. When the situation in our country and the world seems difficult or even hopeless, we cry out to God for help and salvation for ourselves, for others in need, and for the Earth itself. WHERE DO THE WARS COME FROM? The letter from Saint James is quite explicit about the problem of war and peace. The fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace. So then, Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from?... You kill and envy but you cannot obtain; you fight and wage war. 3 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three How often do we pray for others? I am sure that many of you do! Praise God! Just imagine how different our world would be if we prayed for each other more frequently. Next time we are tempted to gossip, try to pray for that person! I would ask that we pray as a Parish Family for those who are not coming to Mass. Having been one of those people who had stopped going to Mass prior to going into the Seminary in 1979, I am eternally grateful for the prayers of those who brought me back! Membership in our Adult Choir is now open. New members are most welcome! Our first rehearsal will take place on Wednesday, September 26 th from 7:30pm 9:30pm in the Parish Church. If you are interested in becoming part of our choir that ministers through the joy of music, see our Director of Music, Lisa Chen, or a choir member after Mass on Sunday. Remember that the choir is composed of parishioners such as yourselves. You need not to be able to read music. Come and share your musical gift with your church. PARENTS ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD(REN) TO JOIN OUR CHOIR! In a few weeks, rehearsals for St. Anthony s Junior Choir will begin. All boys and girls in grades 3-12 are invited. Not only will your child(ren) be receiving an invaluable experience in music education, they also have the opportunity to learn more about the liturgy, and to serve as leaders. By singing in a choir, children will be better prepared for their eventual role as adult members of the worshiping assembly (STL55) Our first rehearsal will take place on Sunday, September 30th, in the Parish Church from 2:00-3:00pm. For further information, see Lisa Chen, our Music Director, after Mass. Your child(ren) will have a very enjoyable time and be making a wonderful contribution to the parish s music ministry. Only instructed Catholics should be invited as Godparents. A copy of the child s birth certificate and sponsor certificates for the Godparents are required when you meet with the priest. ANTHONY S - A Shrine to the Unborn is installed in St. Anthony s Shrine Church. The centerpiece of the shrine is an image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. A Book of Life is enshrined there. Those who have suffered the loss of an unborn child, through stillbirth, miscarriage or abortion, or of a child who lived for just a short time, may have his or her name inscribed in the Book. If you wish to have an unborn child included; applications are available at St. Anthony s Church office between 8:30am & 3:30pm. There is no fee but donations will be received with gratitude.

The Rockland vigil will begin Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 3 pm on public property on Perlman Drive in Spring Valley. 40 Days for Life is a peaceful, highly focused, nondenominational initiative of prayer and fasting outside abortion clinics and Planned Parenthood offices. Many women have turned away from these clinics and chosen life during these 40 days. The program has touched and saved the lives of many here in the archdiocese mothers, children, abortion workers, and parishioners alike. It will run through Nov. 4. 5 Page Five SECOND COLLECTION FOR ST. JOSEPH SEMINARY NEXT WEEKEND 9/30/18 Dear friends in the Lord: One of the most significant passages in the Bible is Jesus last personal instruction to his disciples- Go forth, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit. We are all called to follow this Great Commission, but the young men studying at Saint Joseph s Seminary are called in a very special and very specific way. In the recognizing and responding to God s call to become the next generation of priests and deacons, these seminarians will mirror the life of Christ as a priest, teacher, and shepherd. As Saint Joseph s Seminary enters its 122 nd year, we are modernizing the campus with some long needed repairs. We have replaced the roof and the bell tower, updated the fire and sprinkler systems, added much needed air conditioning to the meeting spaces, and renovated the beautiful chapel. There long overdue physical improvements will enhance our nationally renowned seminary, and hopefully inspire more young men to join us. As you know, Saint Joseph s Seminary has a great tradition of forming and ordaining holy, faithful and dedicated priests. Many of you are familiar with the financial challenges of education your children and grandchildren at college. Those same costs exist for our seminarians, but without the option of government scholarships and financial aid. This is why it is the duty of all of us to support these men who will eventually support all of us. Our priests and deacons form and inform, they nourish and strengthen us, and they heal and guide the people of God throughout their lives as Catholics. Please prayerfully consider a sacrificial gift to supporting this year s Annual Seminary Appeal.
