2 Greetings from Fr. Pat, My hope is the school year is starting well for the students of our parish. As public education has started, religious education classes will be starting at St. Francis and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Classes are on Wednesdays through the academic year, with class times at St. Francis for K-6 at 6-7pm and for grades 7-12 at 7:15-8:30pm. Class times at OLMC are 7-8pm. Please register your children for the classes. The most important education they can receive is about the faith. If students are not yet registered at St. Francis, please contact Amy, Director of Religious Education at Registration at OLMC for first time students will be held on the first day of class on Sept. 12. Fr. Louis Ouedraogo from Burkina Faso, a West African country, was at the masses of St. Francis and OLMC two weekends ago as part of the Mission Cooperation Plan of the Archdiocese of Omaha. He has visited other parishes in the Archdiocese, making an appeal to support his home diocese in Burkina Faso. Many years ago the French brought the faith to the territory of his country, planting seeds, and the efforts of Fr. Louis are to help his local diocese as it strives to meet the physical and spiritual needs of the people. His presence reflects the universality of our Church. Fr. Louis mentioned to me that there are priests originally from Burkina Faso now serving in France. The seeds have borne fruit and have returned to help the Church in France. It sounds as if vocations to the priesthood are good in his diocese, thus as vocations struggle in one part of the world, there is fruit in another part. May God s grace guide his efforts in support of his home diocese. The last five weeks the Gospel reading has been from the Gospel of John, Chapter 6. Chapter 6 provides a focus on the body and blood of Jesus. In prior weeks I mentioned that the Eucharist brings the presence of Jesus to us, in tabernacles around the world, and that the Eucharist also provides nourishment to us for spiritual wellbeing. Many disciples left Jesus and returned to their former way of life, evidently because of their difficulty in understanding and accepting the words of Jesus, as reflected in Chapter 6, for example, For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. That some left supports that Jesus was not talking in mere symbolic terms, but truly about his body and blood for us. Our faith believes in the real presence in the Eucharist, given to us for our spiritual needs and to lead us to eternal life. A word on this s Gospel, now from the Gospel of Mark. Jesus provides the contrast between human traditions v. divine traditions. Pharisees and scribes focusing on the exterior and not the interior, being ritually clean on the outside, but not clean on the inside. A concern for human percepts and not divine percepts. A central question is the human heart, is the human heart focused on man s will or God s will? Whether one does good or evil comes from the human heart, the interior of the person that leads either to human pursuits or divine pursuits. The free will God has given us. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel pray for us! St. Francis of Assisi pray for us! ~~Seeking Truth Bible Study: Building parish life through communal study of God s Word. Please join us Tues 11 Sept, 7 to 8:30 pm in the St. Francis church hall. The program this study session will be the Acts of the Apostles and Pauline s Letters. We will begin with The Birth of the Church. In the vestibule of church there is a poster with a pocket with the lesson for the upcoming week for you to fill out if you are interested in joining us. All are welcome. PAPER DRIVE The Pope John students will hold a paper drive on Sat. 15 Sept. Gonzaga and Joshua Houses are in charge. Please place materials in the Church parking lot by 8:00 am. Papers, mailings, magazines, shredded paper, cereal boxes and the like will be collected. If at all possible, put them in double paper sacks. For assistance in Neligh, call Layne Bullock ( ) St Theresa's Church in Clearwater is having their annual Breakfast - Bake Sale - Raffle on Sun 16 Sept.. Serving pancakes, french toast, scrambled eggs & sausage from 8:30 am -12:30 pm with the raffle at 12:30 pm. Bake sale throughout the morning. Many raffle items and a special quilt raffle that will begin about 12:30 pm. 94th Omaha Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women Convention Mon 17 Sept, St. Peter Church, Stanton. Registration: 7:30 to 9 am. Rosary at, Program and Mass 9 am to 3 pm. Keynote speaker Fr Jerry Connealy, pastor of St. Peter Church. Celebrate Mass with Archbishop Lucas and other priests of the Archdiocese. Registration deadline is, Fri 7 Sept. Registration forms can be found on the back of the bulletin. Grieving with Great Hope is a DVD series offered by the Archdiocese of Omaha, that will be held in Elgin this fall. This is for adults who have lost a spouse, child, parent, grandparent, friend, or [experienced a miscarriage]. Included in the sessions are prayerful reflection, practical learning, and personal fellowship. Sessions are open to anyone in the area and will be held on Thursday evenings, October 4 thru November 1 from 7:00 8:30 p.m. in the Ministry Room in St. Boniface Convent. The final evening, Mass will be held at 7:00 p.m. at St. Bonaventure, Raeville. The program is FREE. If you have a need for HOPE after a loss, please call Karen or Cheryl to register or to learn more about the program. Musical instrument Exhibit runs from Sept 7 to Oct 14, at St Benedict Center, Schuyler, NE. Piano technician and collector Steve Misener: from Stockholm, SD will be sharing a portion of his unique personal collection of musical instruments. This exhibition will focus on keyboard instruments, which either have a connection to a Classical or Romantic Era composer or are from those musical time periods. Visit On September 30 and October 14, at 3:00 p.m., you can experience the exhibition with Misener as host. - Informal self-guided tours are possible; please contact us beforehand. - This event is free. The Secretary s report was given and the Treasurer s report showed a balance on hand of $5, The no-bake, bake sale was a success with about $ being collected. Ron Gilg has completed the new cabinets for the dishes. Donna Vice put the dishes away and got the supply shelves back in order. Jennifer Ervin has been hired to clean the church basement and CCD rooms. The Potluck Supper for Fr. Pat was well attended and an abundance of food was on hand. A big thanks to the ladies from both parishes who helped set up, serve and clean up after the supper. Our Archbishop had car trouble and did not get to enjoy this great supper. Installation of Fr. Pat will be rescheduled. The OACCW Convention will be held in Stanton on Monday September 17. The Sodality needs to furnish a raffle prize. It was decided to again give a plant with a rosary in it. Donna Vice will take care of getting this accomplished. Registration forms will be attached to the bulletin. Our Fall Festival will be held October23rd. The tickets are being printed and plans are underway. The next meeting will be September 11 th at 7:00 p.m. Penny & a Prayer was collected and Donna closed the meeting with a prayer.
