2 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 February 2015 The people who sit in darkness have seen a great light; on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death, light has arisen. MARK: THE ACTION - PACKED GOSPEL 2015 is a journey through the Gospel according to Mark. Most Sundays, the Gospel read at Mass will be from Mark s Gospel. The Gospels came into being because, as the eyewitnesses who walked with Jesus began to die out, Christians saw the need to put the story of the life of Jesus and his teachings into writing, to hand on to future Christians. Mark is the earliest Gospel, written so that future generations would know the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God the first verse of Mark. Mark was written before the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. From hints in the Gospel, we think that Mark was written in Rome for a circle of readers who were not Jewish (the first disciples of Jesus were Jews). And Mark sounds very Roman. The Romans were a practical, straightforward people. For them, Mark moves quickly. For example, in just five verses Jesus is baptized, goes into the desert for 40 days, and begins his ministry. Compare that to the Gospel according to Luke where it takes thirty-one verses to cover the same ground! Mark is a series of short stories that show Jesus as constantly active: some of the most-used words in Mark are immediately and at once. To get a clear picture of Jesus life from beginning to end, I always recommend Mark it s a quick read in just sixteen chapters. We don t know for certain who wrote Mark, but ancient tradition says that Mark was written by John Mark, who accompanied St Barnabas and St Paul on their missionary trip together, and who was the cause for Barnabas and Paul splitting up. Paul thought John Mark was unreliable, because Mark had left them for a while during the trip in order to go back home to Jerusalem. When John Mark wanted to rejoin Barnabas and Paul, Paul said No, Barnabas said Yes, resulting in Paul and Barnabas going their separate ways, with Barnabas taking John Mark with him, while Paul had Silas as his assistant. John Mark s mother was a friend of St Peter. (Acts 12:12; 13:13; 15:36 40) According to the ancient historian Eusebius of Caesarea, Mark also travelled with his family friend St Peter, writing down Peter s sermons as he preached them, and these sermons were the beginnings of what became the Gospel according to St Mark. Then Mark, in 49 AD moved to the Egyptian city of Alexandria, and established the Church there, becoming the first bishop of Alexandria (Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History 15 16). Christian tradition has long associated the four Gospel writers Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John with the four living creatures human, lion, ox, and eagle surrounding God s throne in Revelation 4:7. Mark s symbol is the lion. Another tradition says that Mark was thrown to the lions to be killed in the persecution of Christians, but instead the lions slept at Mark s feet while he petted them. Mark is often shown in Christian art with lions. During the upcoming season of Lent, you might want to try reading Mark as your spiritual assignment. If you read just a half-chapter a day, you ll read through the entire Gospel in 32 days. 6 Religious Educaon News The Saint of the Month is Kateri Tekakwitha, who's last recorded miracle before she was elevated her Sainthood occurred in the Sea le area. Also called Lily of the Mohawks, Kateri is a patron saint of ecology and the environment. She was born in 1656 in what now is upstate New York, on the upper poron of Lake Ontario and near the modern Canadian border. Her father was a Mohawk chief, and her mother was an Algonquin who had been bapzed as a Catholic prior to being captured by Mohawks in warfare. It was not unusual in Nave American culture to wait to name a baby unl the child showed some disnguishing characterisc, and the name of their infant would evolve with me. When she was four, smallpox spread through her village and took the lives of her mother, father, and younger brother. She survived but with scars and health issues Thus, she was named Tekakwitha, which means The One Who Walks Groping for Her Way. Kateri is the first canonized saint ever to be born in the United States or Canada. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, February 18th. Apr. 4th Easter St. Augusne, where two St. Mary teens (Brisa and Tomi) will receive the first three sacraments! 7 A few adventurous cooks are needed to prepare the Opera on Rice Bowl recipes to be served at our Tuesday Soup nights a=er the Tuesday Sta ons of the Cross on March 24th. NOTE TO PARENTS OF FIRST COMMUNICANTS: Your children asked to bring bread to this event and help serve it. Assistance is needed for two separate recep!ons coming up: For the First Confessions Recep!on we need a couple of fruit and cheese trays to add to the typical coffee and donut hour a=er the First Confessions on March 1st. There will also be a special sheet cake to help celebrate this blessed event. On May 3rd, we are asking for volunteers to make sandwiches at home, cut them and bring them to the parish hall, before Mass, to be served at the First Holy Communion Recep!on. Also, dona ons of cold salads (like macaroni, potato and Jell-o), also cheese and fruit/veggie trays are needed for this recep on.
