3 A CHRISTMAS MEDITATION FOR THOSE WHO HAVE LOST A LOVED ONE THIS YEAR This poem was written by a 13-year old named Ben to his mother before he died of a brain tumor. He died in 1997, and that year he spent his first Christmas with Jesus. Saint Augustine of Canterbury Roman Catholic Church Christmas 2017 Mass Schedule Sunday, December 24 th - Regular Sunday Mass 8:00 AM & 10:00 AM Please note there is NO 12 Noon or 5 PM Mass Sunday, December 24 th - Christmas Eve 4 PM - Children s Mass 6 PM - 8 PM - 12 Midnight Monday, December 25 th - Christmas Day 10:00 AM - 12 NOON ONLY Please note there is NO 8 AM OR 5 PM Mass Or Eucharistic Adoration in the evening Tuesday, December 26 th - Feast of St. Stephen My First Christmas In Heaven I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below with tiny light, like Heavens, reflecting on the snow. The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away the tear, For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear. But the sounds of music can't compare with the Christmas Choir up here. I have no words to tell you, the joy the voices bring, For it is beyond description, to hear the angels sing. I know how much you miss me, I see the pain inside your heart. But I am not so far away, We really aren't apart. So be happy for me, dear ones, You know I hold you dear, And be glad I'm spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I sent you each a special gift, from my heavenly home above. I sent you each a memory of my undying love. After all, love is a gift more precious than pure gold. It was always most important in the stories Jesus told. Please love and keep each other, as my Father said to do. For I can't count the blessings or love he has for each of you. So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear, Remember I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. Please note there will be NO 9:00 AM morning Mass.
4 BLESSING OF A CHRISTMAS TREE IN A PRIVATE HOME INTRODUCTORY RITES All make the sign of the cross as the Leader of Prayer says: Blessed be the name of the Lord All reply: Now and forever. The Leader of Prayer greets those present: Let us glorify Christ our light, who brings salvation and peace into our midst, now and forever. All reply: Amen. READING OF THE WORD OF GOD A reader or another person present reads the following text from sacred Scripture: Brothers and sisters, listen to the words of the apostle Paul to Titus: But when the kindness and generous love of God our Savior appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, He saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our savior, so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life. After a moment of quiet reflection, the Leader of Prayer says: Lord our God, we praise you for the light of creation: the sun, the moon, and the stars of the night. We praise you for the light of Israel: the Law, the prophets, and the wisdom of the Scriptures, We praise you for Jesus Christ, your Son: he is Emmanuel, God-with-us, the Prince of Peace, who fills us with the wonder of your love. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we illumine this tree. May the light and cheer it gives be a sign of the joy that fills our hearts. May all who delight in this tree come to the knowledge and joy of salvation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. All reply: Amen. BLESSING OF A MANGER OR NATIVITY SCENE IN A PRIVATE HOME INTRODUCTORY RITES All make the sign of the cross as the Leader of Prayer says: Our help is in the name of the Lord. All reply: Who made heaven and earth. READING OF THE WORD OF GOD A reader or another person present reads the following text from sacred Scripture: Brothers and sisters, listen to the words of the Holy Gospel according to Luke: In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. So all went to be enrolled, each to his own town. And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over there flock. After a moment of quiet reflection, the Leader of Prayer says: God of every nation and people, from the very beginning of creation you have made manifest your love: when our need for a Savior was great you sent your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary. To our lives he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy, and love. Lord, bless all who look upon this manger; may it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus, and raise up our thoughts to him, who is God-with-us and Savior of all, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. All reply: Amen.

That the elderly, sustained by families and Christian communities, may apply their wisdom and experience to spreading the faith and forming the new generations. Welcome to Our Little One Who was Baptized into Christ December 17, 2017 Marcelino Quemuel del Rosario OUR LADY OF FATIMA STATUE This week the Fatima statue will be in the home of The Yorobe Family. Please remember to also take the black bag which holds the crown with the statue. Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you! Luke 1:28 Faith is a gift from God. Take time in silence and thank Him for all the gifts He has given you. Try to set aside any anger or resentment you have and really open your heart to receive he gift of God s mercy and forgiveness. We can t give what we don t have. We need to receive God s mercy and forgiveness first before we can give it to others. December 17th: $26, THERE IS NO COUNTING TEAM FOR DECEMBER 31, NEW YEAR S EVE MEDITATION FOR DECEMBER 24th, 2017 Have faith in God s promises. Sometimes, as children, we think that a special day, such as Christmas or a birthday, will never arrive, but it always does, eventually. The people of the Old Testament were waiting for centuries for the coming of the Messiah to free them, Jesus did come, but it took a long time before He was accepted. In today s first reading, David wants to build a temple for the Lord, but hears from the Lord that He will build a family dynasty for Him that will last forever. This passage from the Letter to the Romans is a hymn of praise giving glory to God. The Gospel tells of the angel Gabriel s message to Mary that she would conceive and bear the son of God, Jesus.

8 THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE ST. A S No words could ever express the appreciation we have for all those hard working people who dedicated time, talent and treasure to make sure our Christmas collection for those less fortunate was a huge success. Grateful for Father Bob s unwavering support, we are so thankful for everyone who decorated ornaments for our Giving Tree, provided the gifts requested and carried gifts from the Church to the Augustine room every day for weeks. We are blessed with those who sorted, packed and delivered gifts, turkeys and holiday food to so many families in our area and to the many organizations that rely on us for help. Neither snow nor sleet nor freezing cold could deter our Saint Augustine angels from spreading the Christmas spirit. A special heartfelt thanks must go to Janine Rosamilia and the Giving Tree ministry for the countless hours and true labor of love that brought joy and the Light of Christ to so many. What you do has lasting value, well beyond this Christmas season. With sincere gratitude for all involved in any way in this mission of love. THANK YOU!!!

John Seber and Elvis Crowley Nun Fun...Heavenly Humor Special Guest: Sr. Mary Margaret, SCC MASS ATTENDANCE AT SAINT AUGUSTINE After consultation with the Pastoral Board and in dialogue with Bishop Checchio we reduced the Sunday Mass schedule by one Mass. The new Mass schedule for Sunday is 8am, 10am, 12noon and 5pm, with the Saturday vigil at 5pm. Every November the Diocese asks each parish to do a Mass count per Mass and submit the information to the Chancery. With one Mass being eliminated, we were down an average of 97 people per weekend. Mindful our area continues to change and some parishioners have moved out of the State to retire because of the cost of taxes in the State of New Jersey. While the national average for Catholics attending Sunday Mass is 20% (the Diocese of Trenton average is 18%) our parish is at 47.5%. All of the parishes in our Deanery and throughout the Diocese of Metuchen have experienced a decrease. The average for the number of people attending a particular Mass is: Saturday vigil Mass Sunday 8am Mass- 445 Sunday 10am Mass- 626 Sunday 12noon Mass- 449 Sunday 5pm Mass- 392 I thank you for your faithfulness to living out your Catholic Faith! ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BECOMING A CATHOLIC? Or perhaps you are a baptized Catholic who never completed the Sacraments of Initiation (Confirmation and Eucharist). The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is just for you! Gather with others who desire to know the Lord Jesus Christ in the truth of the Catholic Faith, as we undergo catechesis, reflect on the scriptures, and contemplate our call to faith in Christ in preparation for Baptism and/or reception and completion of the Sacraments of Initiation. Meetings are held on Sundays at 8:30 am in Father McGivney Hall (followed by 10:30 am Mass). If you are interested in getting connected, please call the Parish Center at Deacon Denis NEW HEALTH CENTER AT ST. Are you a registered member of the parish?? Are you moving??? If you have recently moved into the area and have not yet registered in the parish, we encourage you to become a registered member. You may do so in a variety of ways: you can ask an usher for a registration packet after Mass; by stopping by or calling the Parish Office to obtain a registration packet. Once registered, you will receive quarterly mailing of parish offertory envelopes. The use of an Offertory envelope helps us to track Mass attendance which affects your status as an active or inactive parishioner. Mass attendance, not the content of the offertory envelope, is reviewed twice a year and a letter is sent to those who have not used their envelopes in a specified time period. It is necessary to be an ACTIVE, REGISTERED member of the parish in order to obtain Sponsor Letters which are needed to act as Godparents for Baptism or Sponsors for Confirmation. Sponsor letters cannot be given to those considered inactive (or not registered). We also ask that anyone seeking to be married in our church or to baptize a child be registered in the parish. If you are moving out of the parish, please contact the office around the time of your move so we may change our records accordingly and avoid sending you envelopes you don t need. Any questions, please call Liz at the Parish Office,
