2 P a g e 2 O U R S A V I O U R S U C C J u n e / J u l y / A u g u s t THE CALLER FROM THE PASTOR S DESK (Note: Since we are consolidating the summer issues of The Caller, this time around you are getting a double dose of reflections on spiritual practices. In this article I will cover both the sixth and seventh chapters of An Altar in the World and then in September we will get back on track with both the eighth and ninth chapters.) Community: The Practice of Encountering Others Many of you may have heard me say Christianity is a team sport which is a quote from one of my former professors, Dr. Damayanthi Niles. What this means is that while you can of course believe whatever you want on your own, it is not possible to be a Christian by yourself. To be a Christian one must seek to put their beliefs into action, to live out what they proclaim. The very nature of Christianity requires us to be in community with others. In biblical language to know something is more than a feeling, a belief, or a cognitive process it has connotations of intimacy, of doing, of action. As one rabbi puts it, in Scripture to know is to do. One s beliefs and personal faith are important but are nothing if not enacted and lived within community, or as epistle of James puts it, Faith without works is dead. Our beliefs should lead to making the world a better place. This means we have to venture out and meet people where they are and for who they are, to encounter other human beings and seek to see the beauty and goodness in them that God sees. Taylor writes, at its most basic level, the everyday practice of being with other people is the practice of loving the neighbor as the self. As we come face to face with another human being we are challenged to at least entertain the possibility that this is one of the faces of God, to see the precious gift of the divine. A practical way to do this is to simply look into a person s eyes make eye contact with that cashier or that bagger at the store and smile acknowledge their personhood. Make a point of catching your server s name at a restaurant, look them in the eye as they bring you your food or take your dishes. All of this may seem a bit uncomfortable, but the truth is God sometimes calls us to do the uncomfortable things so that we may give comfort to others. God commands us to love the stranger (Deuteronomy 10:19, Matthew 25:35-44,), because we have been strangers ourselves....continued ON PAGE 3 SUMMER SERVICES Sunday AND Wednesday services will be held at Our Saviour s June 15 July 23. Sunday AND Wednesday services will be at St. John July 27-Sept. 3 rd. Sunday services are at 9:30am. NEW TIME OF SERVICES STARTING IN SEPTMEBER Starting September 7th, our normal services will now start at 8:30am to allow for Pastor Tara and all our members to share in fellowship time during coffee hour.
3 P a g e 3 O U R S A V I O U R S U C C J u n e / J u l y / A u g u s t FROM THE PASTOR S DESK...CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2 Vocation: The Practice of Living with Purpose When we speak of vocation in the context of faith, most people assume it s an option, either your vocation is in ministry or it isn t. We dumb it down and make it synonymous with occupation and link it with employment, as though only what makes you money is a vocation. Truly, one s vocation however has more to do with living purposefully. This isn t to say that there is one particular thing that God has predestined for you to do and that until you find it, the other stuff doesn t count. Vocation, lived faithfully, is about being purposeful about whatever it is we do. As Brother Lawrence, a Carmelite monk whose writings are collected in the book The Practice of the Presence of God, wrote The time of business does not with me differ from the time of prayer; and in the noise and clatter of my kitchen, while several persons are at the same time calling for different things; I possess God in as great tranquility as if I were upon my knees before the Blessed Sacrament. It is not so much what we do with our lives but how and with what attitude we do it. Brother Lawrence served God well in the kitchen of the monastery, some serve God in a boardroom, others in the field. Taylor points out that no matter what we might do for a living: every human interaction offers you the chance to make things better or to make things worse. The first job I ever had was working as an intern at a car dealership. Most of my time there was spent either filing or answering phones. The elderly man, who owned the dealership, insisted he could tell if I was smiling by the tone of my voice. From him I learned the importance of offering the best to everyone who called. A friendly smiling voice at the end of the line went a long way toward helping the customer have a positive happy experience. Regardless of our occupation we all are called to a larger vocation, that of loving God and neighbor. Taylor calls this the vocation of becoming fully human and refers to the process of learning to turn our gratitude for being alive into some concrete good. As Henry David Thoreau wrote, Be not simply good: be good for something. Going beyond the cliché what would Jesus do?, Taylor challenges us to live as Jesus lived, to be practical, to turn our goodness into something concrete, Jesus washed feet, Brother Lawrence washed dishes. Taylor challenges us to find some way to do what we do in our daily lives with a sense of purpose, whether it be simple or grand. To live as though what we do, how we spend our moments really mattered to God.because they do! Pastor Tara This month we continue our reflections with the sixth and seventh chapters of Barbara Brown Taylor s book An Altar in the World. NEW MID-WEEK WORSHIP SERVICE OFFERED Let s be honest and admit that sometimes it s hard to make it to church on a Sunday morning, especially in summer we go on vacation, have family get-togethers, work, sports, etc As a community of faith we are committed to working together to grow in faith; for this reason beginning June 18 th we will be offering a mid-week service on Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm. The service will feature the same scripture and sermon as the preceding Sunday, with similar worship elements as the Sunday service. We hope this new worship opportunity will give everyone an opportunity to participate in worship at a time that is convenient to them.

Excellent worship was led by Rev. Bryan Syrchio.
